Dear Editor,First let me say that I enjoy yourmonthly newspaper immensley. Ieven enjoy reading theadvertisements. My job has metraveling around the country and Ienjoy dropping in on new pool halls.Butte doesn’t have any and I reallylove to play on the 9' pool tables aswell as the 12' snooker tables.Having said that I would like tocomment on one item that seemsto be missing from a large numberof stories I read in On The Break.A recent example is the story aboutthe WBCA Regional 8-BallChampionships. Where would Ifind Lincoln City? Let’s see, AbeLincoln was born in Kentucky, butsometimes Illinois claims him.Hmmm...they aren’t in the West, though. Now it just so happens Ihave stayed in Lincoln City, so Iknow where it is, but I doubteveryone outside of Oregon knows.Keep up the good work. The restof the stories are informative andworth reading. I especially like thecolumns by various people.Speaking of that, you should do anarticle on Samm Diep’sThanksgiving dinner - I hear shefeeds several hundreds of people. Thanks, Tony Keller

Editor’s Note:Thank you Tony for bringing that tomy attention and the changes havebeen implemented.I would encourage everybody tosend in comments andsuggestions, after all it is your poolpublication.

by: Craig W Rittel, ownerGrady Mathews in Lakewood, Washington At Full Splice BilliardsGrady’s exhibition was phenomenal. The day started with an exhibitionmatch between Grady and Harry Platis playing onepocket. I am very grateful to Harry for taking time outof his crowded schedule to travel to Lakewood, WA toplay Grady this exhibition match. Harry and Grady

played a race tothree, and duringeach game theygave everyonepresent a breakdown of theirintent and theirstrategy shot forshot. Spectatorscould askquestions, andboth of these gentlemen answeredthem in a very informative manner, which cleared up anymisconceptions that some of thespectators may have had about the

strategy and concepts of the game of one pocket. The match went hill /hill with Grady finally winning the race. Everyone present learned a great

deal about the game of one pocketfrom the perspective of these twogreat players.Next Grady went through hisseminar on the history of pool withthe assistance of his lovely wifeRandi. This presentation consistedof a slide show which includedphotographs of famous players andtournaments. Many of thesephotographs were from Grady’spersonal collection, and theycovered a time span from the 60’sto date. Grady’s commentary wasexcellent, and it was truly amazing

how vivid and clear his memories of these events were, and howentertaining this gentleman truly is. Grady’s knowledge of history of poolis a very important link to past, andhopefully he will be around formany more years to share it.Upon completion of Grady’sseminar, Grady went through ashot demonstration with audienceparticipation. These were not yourtypical set up shots, the shotschosen by Grady required manyfactors to be successful which hewas. Grady’s performance wastruly excellent, his cue ball control/ speed control were trulyphenomenal. Upon completion ofthe shot making / position playsegment of his seminar, Gradysigned autographs and playedpool with the spectators, and no one was left out. I would recommendGrady’s Presentation / seminar to anyone, and especially to other PoolRoom owners. Everyone present was truly impressed with the entirepresentation, and the professional manner in which Grady presented it.I personally can not wait until next year to have Grady and his Lovelywife Randi come back again!!!!!I would also again like to extend a special thanks to Harry Platis forcoming down to Lakewood, Washington for this event, his participationgreatly added to the overall success of the day!!!!

By Mike JensenChuckie Holyoke came through the B-side to double dip Scott Nelsonand took first place in the March $1000.00 add B tourney in Longview,Washington.A full field of sixty-four good players fought hard for two days to see whocould climb to the top of the winner’s circle.14 year old Chuckie Holyoke accompanied by his biggest supporter, hisdad Kent, showed that at an early age you can play quality pool. Chuckiedid not have an easy walk through the tournament. His first match was awin over Ron Ok. Ron just won the BCA B Division at Chinook Winds. Hethen beat veteran player Scoot Chandler in a hill hill thriller. Chuckie lostthe next set to Rennie Amadio to go to the B side where he went on todefeat Robert Ferrell, Minh Le and Larry Wayne to face Ron Ok againand take the win. Chuckie went on to defeat Dan Stenburg and local

On April 14 & 15, 2007 nine teams from the Tacoma and Federal wayTraveling 8 Ball Divisions competed for the Western Washington 2007BCA Team Championship IV Title. This event was sponsored and hostedby The Q’z Family Restaurant and Sports Lounge in Graham, Washington,Miller Brewing Company, Coors Brewing Company and W. WA. BCA

Pool League. The Q’z owners, Ed and Nickii Tarape provided outstanding playingconditions with all new felts on the five tables used for this tournamentand added additional $150.00 in prize money. With $880.00 total addedprize money and promotional items like T-shirts, Ball Caps, Cup Holdersand Key Rings every team that participated went home with something. The format was a race to the first 3 rounds won with 4 games in eachround. The regular weekly player handicaps were used with the differencebeing credited at 1.5 the normal rate to the lower team per round. Manyof the matches were decided between one or two balls at the end of thelast round. The Full Splice Nuts team champions had a challenging two days ofmatches. One of their early matches tied with 2.5 rounds each, which isplayed off in a one game sudden death outcome to determine who wouldwin that match. Their team prevailed and managed to stay undefeatedall the way to take the title. Job well done! These team championship league tournaments are geared to level theplaying field between the lower handicap team players and the seasonedveterans within our league. It provided great competition to all levelsthat participated. Many players commented on the good time they hadand look forward to competing even stronger at the next event slated forNovember 2007. I encourage the weaker teams to participate in the

By David TellerSpokane, WashingtonNick Kruger of Penticton, B.C.coasts undisputed through a field of30, beating Todd Marsh of Seattle9-6, winning the tournament for thefirst time.In their first meeting, Kruger fellbehind but stayed close. He caughtup Marsh when he tied the match7-7 and again at 8-8. Kruger ranout after Marsh’s miss, sendingMarsh to the loser’s bracket.Marsh met Joe Gilliland of Spokane,Wash. as the top finisher in theloser’s bracket. The two seesawedto a 4-4 tie when Marsh caught momentum, winning five of the next sixgames, eliminating Gilliland 9-5 to get back into the championship.Gilliland played hard to avoid elimination. Before his match with Marsh,he fell behind 5-2 to a surging Darin Walding of Portland, Ore. Gillilandchanged his focus. “I quit worrying about all the fancy (safeties),” hesaid. “I just started running out like I know I can.” Gilliland rallied backseven unanswered games on Walding to win 9-5.The rematch between Marsh and Kruger would decide the championship.Kruger again fell behind Marsh 4-1 when he changed his strategy. “Itook him out of his rhythm,” Kruger said of Marsh’s fast-paced rhythmstyle of play. “And I tightened up my game a little.”The ploy worked. Kruger took nine of the next 11 games from Marsh towin the tournament 9-6.

Walding’s performance was equallyimpressive. He lost his first matchto Marsh 9-1. Walding dominatedthe loser’s bracket winning sixconsecutive matches before losingto Gilliland to finish forth place. In the brotherly love rematch, JoeGilliland rallied from a two gamedeficit to eliminate his identical twinbrother, Greg, with a 9-8 win. Theloss gave Greg a tie for sixth place.Joe won in their previous meetingin last year’s tournament.Linda Dick is the top female finisheragain, going 1-2 during thetournament, but did not place.

The tournament was held April 14 and 15. The nine-ball open is a raceto nine on both sides of the tournament board and is played on BrunswickGold Crowns with red circle cue balls. The total purse for this tournamentwas $2,000.McQ’s is located at 9614 E. Sprague, Spokane Valley, WA. This month’s Artistic Pool Shot isfrom the Masse Discipline and hasa Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 8.Object ball letter coincides withcorresponding pocket letter. Thisskill shot is one of the most talkedabout shots from ESPN’s Trick ShotMagic. I was stationed at DavisMonthan Air Force Base the firsttime I heard about this shot. It wasin the mid 70’s. The way it wasshown to me the set up lookedwrong for this shot to have anychance of being made. I thought theshot was impossible. I didn’t payany attention to the shot until I sawit again in Nick Varners book. It stilllooked wrong in the diagram, so Icalled Nick and asked him how theshot was executed. He told me andI realized that the cue ball andobject ball had to be farther awayfrom the rail. Well through trial and

error on my gold crown one, I finallyfigured the shot out. I would haveto say I have well over 350 hoursof practice and execution timeduring exhibitions in this one shot. This is my wife’s favorite shot. Let’s take a good look at this shotand give you some knowledge youmay not have. This shot looks likeit defies physics! This skill shot is ahalf masse. The set up for this shotis critical! You may put the cue ball andobject ball F anywhere within thenoted 1x1 square as shown in thediagram. The cue ball and F ball arefrozen together. If they aren’t frozentogether the shot WILL NOT work.I’m going to reveal where I put thecue ball for my set up. I put the cueball 1 1/2 ball spaces from the headrail and 1 1/2 spaces from the longrail. Now with the cue ball tapped

lightly into the cloth I freeze theobject ball to the cue ball. The lineof centers between the cue ball andobject ball are pointed to the rightof pocket F, at the long rail bypocket F. If you extended the lineof centers through the rail it wouldpoint at about 3/4 to 1 diamond upfrom pocket F. Why is this alignedso far to the right? It is aligned sofar to the right because you havethe full length of the table in whichthe object ball will throw to the leftbefore it gets to pocket F, (contactinduced throw) caused by friction. The aiming area for the cue ball isshown in the diagram. Seeing thisshot is a half masse the butt end ofyour cue is usually 45 degrees orless. Mine is usually less. You willbe cueing the cue ball at about 2o’clock for the masse affect to workon the cue ball. You don’t hit thisshot with a lot of power. This shot

is usually performed with amoderate to medium hard stoke. The objective of the shot is to shootthe cue ball into F ball with a halfmasse. The cue ball will go aroundF ball as it travels down table towardpocket F. The cue ball will be madefirst in F pocket and the F ball willbe made in the same pocket. Youwill need to make adjustments withaim and alignment of ballsdepending on where the object ballgoes. I know some of you are laughingalready. This is a great skill shot andI would like to comment that I thinkGeorge Middleditch executed theshot better than anyone when hewas giving exhibitions. You MUST get the OWNERSPERMISSION to try this shot ontheir tables. Good Luck and I hopeyou make the shot.

In 1977, there weren’t very many books availableon how to play pool. Willie Mosconi’s “WinningPocket Billiards” and Luther Lassiter’s “ModernGuide” and “Billiards for Everyone” were the mostcommon, but not very complete. Books by CliveCottingham and Edward Knuchell covered moreterritory but were harder to find. In that year, RayMartin and Rosser Reeves brought out “The 99Critical Shots in Pool.” The publisher RandomHouse has just announced a 30th anniversaryedition of the book with a new introduction by RayMartin. The rest of the content of the book isunchanged, but if you don’t already have a copyof this book, it should be among the first dozen

books in your billiard library. One important concept that Reeves and Martin covered well — andperhaps first, so far as I can remember — is the ghost ball. The conceptof the ghost ball is pretty simple: it is the position of the cue ball at theinstant of the collision with the object ball. Using this concept may taxyour powers of visualization. Can you imagine a white sphere wherethe cue ball should be sent? It may take practice. These days, the ghost ball concept is often associated with thecorresponding aiming system, but that was not what Martin had inmind. In fact, about aiming systems he said:

There are as many remedies [for aiming] as there are recipes for cooking. Some players divide the object ball into 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, etc. Others (who may be good with divining rods) measure in cue-tip widths. Others see imaginary “luminous spots.” Others (see below) picture an imaginary cue ball touching the object ball and the two pointing into the pocket (about as good an idea as any), and shoot the cue ball to fill this space. There is only one true solution: Start sinking balls! Set up ball after ball, in front of pocket after pocket, and — sink balls!

Suddenly the eye andthe brain begin to takeover, and you begin to sinkballs. So start! Sink balls!Sink balls! Sink balls! So, if Ray thought that theGhost Ball system ofaiming was pretty muchworthless, why did hebring up the concept? Touse on carom shots. Raywas mostly talking about

14.1 in his book and atthat game (and at eight

ball) you frequently runinto tight clusters of ballswith no obvious shot.Using the ghost balltechnique can often showyou an unmissable shot ina layout you thought washopeless.Shot A in the diagram is atypical situation. The cuton the 3 ball looksimpossible, and in fact it ismore than 90 degrees, butif you hit the 1 ball first, thecue ball will hit the 3 ballnearly immediately. If you

can imagine a ghost ball as in the expanded version of the shot at thebottom, you can predict very accurately where the 3 ball will go. Asdrawn, the balls are sitting just right for the 3 to go into the pocket.

DR CUE BILLIARDS

Samm Diep (c) May 2007I just finished the movie and the non-fiction book, The Secret, by RhondaByrne. If you’ve heard anything about it, then you know that it’s all about

the Law of Attraction. Without giving away too muchof the movie, the law of attraction is all about getting

what you think about; using your thoughts andfeelings to determine your destiny. Whatever youfocus on will be attracted to you. Far fetched?Decide for yourself. But, you can’t deny thatthere’s much truth to this theory.

Without getting too heavy on this topic, let’sthink about how this applies to pool. We maynot realize it, but we often create our livesby focusing on what we don’t want. Forinstance, “I hope I don’t scratch,” “I don’twant to lose my next match,” “I’m not a badplayer,” and “I hope I don’t miss this shot.”These are all ways that we allow the things

we don’t want to creep into our subconscious.Instead, choose the exact spot where you want the cue ball to end upand think, “I’ll make this shot and the cue ball will go there,” and visualizeit happening. Say, “I will win my next match,” and believe it. Say, “I’m aspectacular pool player!” and be proud of it. Think, “make it, make it,make it,” with each warm up stroke and see the ball going into the pocket.Visualize everything that you want to happen, making the shot, beatingyour opponent, and winning the tournament. Attract the positive outcomeswith your positive thoughts.Obviously, I can’t guarantee that just by doing this you will win moretournaments. However, I do believe that by adjusting the way we phraseour thoughts, not only in pool but also in life, we can proactively attractthe things we want, not what we don’t want. A quote by Henry Ford:“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, either way, you’re right.”Shifting the way we think and feel to the things that we want takes practice. It’s natural to want to complain about bad things that happened, the badrolls we got, the bad luck we had. But, if we can focus on the positivethings, we create them for ourselves. Our destiny lies in the future, not inthe past. If we constantly dwell on the negative things from our past, thenwe inevitably recreate them. Remove “I can’t and “I’m not” from yourvocabulary.Imagine yourself as a magnet that attracts things to you through thesignals you emit, using your thoughts and feelings. Whether its money, relationships, health, or pool, be clear about what you want the ultimateoutcome to be. Visualize it. Believe in it. And, make it happen for yourself.Focus on the things you want, not the things you don’t want.If you have yet to see the movie, watch it or read the book with an openmind.Samm Diep, “Cherry Bomb”House Pro at Table Steaks East in Aurora, ColoradoAuthor of “You Might Be A D Player If... IPT WritesBlah ... Blah ... Blah

The IPT recently released a statement to the players that “The IPTis not over ...” wrote IPT founder Kevin Trudeau. He continued, “Allplayers from the World Open will continue to be paid each monthor every other month as cash flow allows. You will all be paid in fullbefore the next IPT tournament.” This comes on the heels of areport aired by a Chicago based ABC-TV affiliate about the troubledIPT and its found Kevin Trudeau. Two IPT players appeared in thepiece, Jeff Beckley and Rodney Morris, but Trudeau did not, insteadDeno Andrews represented the IPT.The entire video can be view on the ABC-TV website at: http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=special_coverage&id=5238035

As for the letter to the IPT players, it was little more than a rehashingof the same old story. No new information was forth coming andno dates for the 2007 or 2008 season have been proposed. Trudeauagain reiterated that he will repay all money won at the World Open8-Ball Championships and anyone who paid to qualify for the 2007season but the question is when?

Many players lives have been impacted by the actions of the IPTand their empty promises make things even worse. You can readthe full text of the email on www.billiardsdigest.com and judge foryourself.

BACKSPINPutting backspin in the cueball by hitting it below center makes possiblesome of the most beautiful shots in the game. While nonplayers may beintrigued to see a cueball back up after a collision in apparent defianceof the laws of physics, this shot is more than a curiosity for players. Theplayer who can apply backspin, or draw theball, with control has a powerful weapon onboth offense and defense. That so many playerscan’t draw the ball eventhough they have beenplaying for years in oneof the most lamentableaspects of the human condition. And yet thebasic technique is not hard to learn. Advanced applications, of course, require a secure stroke, considerable practice and that thing called talent. In my experience as a teacher, students who can’t draw the ball arealmost always not hitting the cueball low enough. They are afraid of golfingthe ball - perhaps sending it off the table or ripping the cloth - but thatseldom happens if the tip of the cue is shaped properly and well chalked. The second-most common error is shooting too softly. Low speed is okayif the cueball is a foot or less away from the object ball, but as the distancebetween the balls increases, so must the speed. The friction betweenthe cueball and the cloth is constantly acting to reduce the backspin andconvert it into natural roll.To learn how to hit the cueball low enough to get good draw action, usea striped ball as a cueball and orient the stripe horizontally (be sure thatthe stripe on the ball is no more than half a ball width for this exercise).BACKSPIN LIMITIn the diagram, note that the upper edge of the cue tip is contacting thelower edge of the stripe on a 9-ball - that’s how you get maximum backspin.Any lower and you’ll miscue, especially if the tip hits the cloth before theball. Examine the 9-ball after shooting; the chalk mark made by the tiptells you if you hit the intended spot. When practicing, start with a short,straight-in shot and remember to get the cue out of the way of the returningcueball. In the drawing, the cue is not quite level, which is the case when the buttmust clear a rail. A slightly elevated cue, in fact, makes the draw actionlivelier. The disadvantage is that unless you hit the cueball precisely inthe center you have squirt and curve to contend with. That’s why mostteachers advocate a level cue for draw shots. In addition, the more youelevate, the more awkward it is to stroke smoothly and the harder it is tojudge speed. Except for certain tricks shots, a level cue will produceenough draw for almost any situation. For more coaching on draw shots, see Byrne’s Standard Video of Pool,Volume I.

John Brewer passed away February 7th 2007 after a very massive attackof lung cancer. He will be truly missed by many, many people. Those ofyou that didn’t know John missed the privilege of being in the presenceof a genuine good person. He valued family, friendship, fair play and hewould always root for the underdog. John had a unique sense of humorand liked nothing more than to make you laugh.John spent his early years in the Gig Harbor area, then moved to Auburnand later Kent, Washington. He worked for Boeing as a CVC mechanicfor more than 15 years, and then he got back out in the fresh air doingconstruction until his illness. John was an avid pool fan, playing league2-3 times a week out of the Interchange in Kent, also supporting thelocal tournaments in between those nights. He played APA for more that10 years and made it to the National Tournament in Las Vegas twice.John also played TAP for five years going to Nationals in Kentucky twice. If he wasn’t playing he was probably watching, you could often run intohim at the big boy tournaments where he would know who most everyonewas and could usually pick the winners.A couple of his most recent trips were to the IPT tournaments in Renoand Las Vegas where he rubbed elbows with his (and our) idols.Along with pool, John loved golf, when he was playing regularly he often

shot in the 80’s.There are plans for a tournament theweekend of May 18th (John’sbirthday) the idea is to make it anannual event, and hopefully it will getenough interest and support toattract the quality of players Johnenjoyed watching so much. Thanks to everyone for all theirprayers and well wishes.-- Written by John Casey

Trivia questions wereasked over the loud speaker such as, “Who were the MCMOA membersin the picture in the souvenir program published by “The Break?” “Inwhat city and what location was the MCMOA first held?” and if you knewthe answer to any of the trivia questions you won a 2007 MCMOA T-shirt.As Saturday wound down for all the brackets, players began to beeliminated and by late afternoon the winners of the 16 player bracketand the winner of each of the loser’s brackets found their way intoSunday’s finals.Sunday starts off with a redraw and all players begin the day with nolosses. Past winners who made it into the finals were: Jeff Boucher, DanHamper, Jason Dawes, Jerry Kohm, Dave Schwartz, Jason Tigart, RandySayre and on the Women’s side Sky Tigart, Judy Lorengo, Janet Dunks,Sue Miller and Carol Todd. All the tables were moved out except for six in the main room for finals,Men’s A and B, Women’sA and B, and the SecondChance Men’s andWomen’s. By: Don “Cheese” AkerlowThe VNEA leagues in Bozeman, Montana start in early fall, usually thefirst Tuesday in October, the Tuesday preceding the first league night isthe Captain’s Meeting which has turned into a Player’s Meeting forquestions, answers, new rules, debates, arguing whys and why nots and

what is expected in the upcomingleague year. There are five separate leagues with4 of them being played in or aroundBozeman. The Valley league thatstretches thirty-odd miles down tothe “banana belt”, the lowest pointin the county saw an increase of25% in league participation. This onlyallowed us to play each team once;usually we play one at their homeand one at our home. All leaguesare on a 15 game rotating format, 5person teams that holds true for 4out of 5 of the leagues. The women’sleague play a 4person roundrobin. In talking withthe leagueoperator, DonLutes, he said,“The leaguesran realsmooth thisyear, nohassles, nofighting. TheHole in theWall league”,

Don remarked,“had over 200ERO’s with a 10team format aswell as a 30-ZIP byJeff Boucher. It’sbeen a reallysmooth year in thecity tournament, there where 30 oddteams that vied fortwo paid spots atthe VNEA NationalChampionships. The women’stournament as wellas the citytournament all ranon time and even alittle ahead.”Don alsomentioned thatthere were moreplayers signed up for singles this year, “I have about 17 or 18 signed upright now compared to maybe 6-7-8 usually.”When I asked him about changes to the leagues next season, Don said,“The thing of it is - this is my 17th or 18th year. In a sport everything we dois work. We pay our bills and send people to Vegas. You have that manypeople playing pool and everybody has a different philosophy on how todo it - “maybe you should do this” or “maybe you should to that” andmaybe it would work and maybe it wouldn’t but we just go with whatworks. And these players that complain about not having a chance to goto Vegas - my suggestion is to play more and get better like the otherplayers did to get there. The whole thing of Las Vegas is to send yourbest teams there - that’s what it’s all about. I go back to the Big SkyTournament, if you win first place you go to the national tournament andthey get put up against a seed like UCLA. This is the same thing - my

worst place teams are playing my first place teamsin the tournaments and that’s just the way it works inbracketing. I know the thing I’m going to emphasizeto everyone next year is that to play in Vegas youneed 12WEEKS of playand NOT 12GAMES - it’s36 games.Overall it was agreat year. Inever had anyreal problems. Ilike it like that -

things have changed over the years. Things have become moreconsistent.”The Valley tournament, the top team would win a paid trip to Vegas, hadlittle to no trouble. The only incident came when a player left his opponent

with a safety that would appear a legal hit was difficult, if not impossible. What the player who left the safety neglected to do was to call a refereeto rule on the shot. What appears to be an impossible hit for one can bea relatively easy for another who has the knowledge and skill it takes tomake a legal hit. The key to the situation was not calling a referee over.

Twenty-odd years ago when I was in Vegas for VNEA Nationals, I asked areferee before a shot how will he tell whether it’s a good hit. It would be inthe direction the ball moves after making contact, is often determinedwhether the hit is legal or not. This is because, at the speed that you hitthe cue ball it is too fast for the eye to catch on a close hit. Even thoughwith hindsight this sounds good, it wasn’t done. The player who left thesafety called foul and by the expression on the other players face, he did

not think it was and he expressed it as well. The player who left the safetybecame irate, shouting, yelling profanities and even challenged anotherplayer to go outside and fight, when theydisagreed with him. This type of conduct isinexcusable and unsportsmanlike. Theplayer should have been asked to leave andnot play the rest of the tournament. Hewasn’t. The referee determined the gameshould be played over. At these moments, most players are very passionate aboutwhat they believe, that doesn’t make eitherplayer right or wrong. Each should explainto the other why they thought it was orwasn’t a foul. If no agreement can bereached, then replay the game. When itbecame apparent to the player who calledthe foul that his team could not win the matchwith two games left, he packed up his cuesand walk out on his team without saying aword. SAN DIEGO CLASSICFINAL JASMINEOUSCHAN VS KELLYFISHERKelly Fisher will be goingfor a 3-peat while JasmineOuschan is striving to betwo for two in herprofessional events in thestates. Both players playedvery well in their semi-finalmatches and the crowd isin for quite a display of skill, talent, and mentaltoughness.

We are set for the lag. Kelly Fisher wins the lag and makes the 5 on thebreak but is forced to play a safety on the 1. Ouschan makes a tremendousrail first cut along the head rail but unfortunately scratches in the cornerwhich so often happens on that particular shot. Fisher begins with ball inhand and runs to the 8 leaving a makeable shot for Jasmine which shemisses. Kelly plays a nice safety by thinning the 8 and leaves the cueball on top of the 9. Jasmine tries to thin the 8 but catches it a little fulland scratches in the side. Game 1 to FisherJasmine comes up dry on the break in game 2. Fisher has a shot on the1, makes the 2 but misses a thin cut on the 3. Ouschan also misses athin cut on the 3 hanging it in the corner. Fisher takes advantage of theopportunity and takes a 2-0 lead with the break.Fisher pockets the 3 on the break and makes a fabulous cut into the side

on the 1 only to miss the 2 ball. Jasmine has another uncharacteristicmiss relinquishing control of the table back to Fisher who neatly managesboth object balls and cue ball to take a 3-0 lead.Ouschan comes up dry and leaves a safety opportunity for Fisher whichshe executes to perfection. Ouschan makes a nifty 2 rail hit with goodspeed to not leave an offensive shot. Kelly returns another great safetyonly overshadowed by Jasmine pocketing the 1 rail kick into the cornerwith shape on the 2. It appears Jasmine ran just long for the 3 and has toplay safe tying the 3 with the 8. Kelly can see the 3 however, and plays agood safe. Jasmine makes a spectacular hit with perfect speed. Fisherreturns and forces an error from Jasmine who leaves a shot on the 3 inthe side. Kwik-Fire Fisher makes short work of the rest of the rack for adominate 4-0 lead AND the break.Fisher comes up dry on the break. Jasmine with a difficult positionrequirement on the 2, justover cuts the 1 but ends upsafe. Kelly takes herextension and ends uptaking an intentional tyingup the 3-6. Jasmine makesthe 1 and plays a combo onthe 2-8 which she makesbut doesn’t end up with ashot on the 2 and playssafe. Fisher goes for a longrail bank on the two whichhangs up on these incredibly tight pockets but is safe on the two-way.Ouschan fails to hit the 2 and Fisher continues on her quest taking thelead 5-0.

Former world championHsin-Mei Liu finished tied for fifth; BCA Open champion Jasmin Ouschanof Austria was tied for 17th; and Allison Fisher didn’t make it out of thegroup stages.Barely five feet tall, Pan is quickly becoming a towering presence inwomen’s pool. Just two weeks prior to the Amway Championship, Panhad secured her first title on the Women’s Professional Billiard AssociationClassic Tour. She beat Helena Thornfeldt of Sweden, 7-2, at the GreatLakes Classic in Michigan City, Ind.

NWPA TOUR STOP #2

March 31 - April 1, 2007 - The Cue Ball in Salem, OR was the host of theNWPA’s 2nd tournament of 2007. Once again, Jim and the crew wereperfect hosts, bringing in complimentary food and coffee, plus havingtheir many tables in perfect condition. With thirty (30) players entered, it was one of our better attended Oregonstops in a while. Play started Saturday morning with many closely foughtmatches. The consensus opinion is that the overall skill level is increasingand there just aren’t any easy matches or overwhelming favoritesanymore. This should make the points battle interesting this year. Idon’t recommend players missing any tour stops, as a few points maydecide the Season Champion.By Sunday, the field was pared down to the final eight (8). On the “A”side, Cindy Sliva beat Natalie Seal 7-4 and Liz Cole came from 2-6 tobeat Kim Hole 7-6 to play for the point. In this, Liz finished strong againand won 7-3. Bumped to the “B” side, Natalie squeaked past Mary Olson7-6 and Kim, angry from her loss, beat Mikki Small 7-2. Kim was on amission, then beating Natalie 7-3 and Cindy 7-3 for a rematch with Liz.Once again, Kim jumped to an early 7-4 lead, but Liz reached back andtook over with some impressive shooting to win 9-7.Thanks to all the players and the Cue Ball for such a great tournamentand fun time. Be sure to visit nwpatour.com for updates on our next stopin June or July and don’t forget we will be back in Oregon at Break TimeBilliards in Tigard in September.Chris Rogers and Ford (Tournament Directors)1st $445 Liz Cole2nd $290 Kim Hole3rd $190 Cindy Sliva4th $150 Natalie Seal5/6 $88 Mary Olson, Mikki Small7/8 $68 Linda Dick, Linda Carter

JO pockets the 5 and 6 on the break and comes with a nice shot on the 1 and 2 but gets out of line on the 3. She barelyleaks out on the safety which indeed Fisher takes advantage of for a 6-0 seemingly insurmountable lead.Fisher is on the hill with the break. She makes the one in the side and has a 2-9 carom!!! The 3-peat is on! Congratulationsto Kelly Fisher, winner of the 2005, 2006, and 2007 San Diego Classic. Both players give eloquent speeches during the awards ceremony in which the beautiful and unique trophies arepresented. When Jasmine asked the crowd “Should I come back?” they erupted into applause. “I’ll take that as a yes.See you next year.” Kelly suggested to the crowd that every WPBA event be played at this venue. “This is the onlytournament I’ve won. This is the only tournament I can win!” Could we possibly be looking at a 4-peat in 2008?1st $13,500 Kelly Fisher2nd $8,300 Jasmin Ouschan3rd $5,400 Julie Kelly, Xiao-Ting Pan5th $3,200 Karen Corr, Allison Fisher, Monica Webb, Anna Kostonian9th $2,200 Kim Shaw, Sarah Ellerby, Ga-Young Kim, Janet Atwell, Jennifer Chen, Rachael Abbink, Alice Rim,

Portland, ORBob Zack had runs of 43, 50, and65 balls along the way to winningthe April 1st Straight PoolTournament at Sam’s Billiards. DarinWalding, who came in second, hada run of 36. Aaron Roberts ofOlympia came in third and PaulLamar, 4th.A revised format had the field of 19players playing in groups of threeand four, with the winners of eachgroup and 2 wild cards (best scoreon the loss) advancing to an 8-person finals. The finals were in a

time-shortened double elimination format. The tournament was finishedin less than six and a half hours and seems to meet everyone’s needs. With the greater number of players these days, the format may still betweaked a little but the framework is working. Thanks to everyone involvedfor making this such a good tournament.1st $80 Bob Zack2nd $60 Darin Walding3rd $45 Aaron Rogers4th $30 Paul LamarHigh Run: 65 - Bob Zack

The shot as drawn is easy to predict becausethe cue ball moves only a very short distancebetween the 1 ball and the 3 ball. You can beoff by quite a lot on where you contact the 1and still land in about the same place on the3.Shot B is quite a bit harder to predict becausethe balls are farther apart, but they are sittingjust right for a ghost ball carom. What I lookfor in a situation like this is the line from middleof the ghost ball to the middle of the 4 ball andthen to the pocket. This happens to be astraight line. I can then use my uncanny abilityto scratch to play the cue ball off the 2 to makethe 4. If the shot is not sitting quite straight I need to figure where on thecushion to send the ghost ball from the first object ball.Another trick to help with Shot B if you can’t visualize the ghost ball is tonote the line from the left edge of the 2 ball past the right edge of the 4and on to the right side of the pocket. This will be the path of the rightedge of the ghost ball.A final trick for aiming close caroms like these is to first find the line theghost ball wants to take. You know that the cue ball and (first) object ballalways travel at a right angle to each other. Just send the first object ballat a right angle to the path you want the cue ball to take from the ghostball position. If you can shoot the 2 ball along the indicated line, the cueball has to pocket the 4. Be sure not to have any draw or follow on thecue ball or it will bend off the right-angle line.Well, one last trick. If the balls are sitting almost perfectly for the shot, but you need to pull the object ball over just a little, you can use someside spin on the cue ball to adjust the angle with throw.Using Ray Marin’s ghost ball method of aiming close caroms is a techniqueyou need to practice before you use it. At first try using an extra ball tostand in for the ghost ball when sighting. You may find that you tend toaim a little full or thin on the shots, and it’s best to find and solve thatproblem on the practice table rather than in the league finals.
