Here is a drill that will perfect your draw, follow andstun. To do this drill well, you will have to takec o m p l e t econtrol of thespin on thecue ball. Onceyou have theses h o t smastered, youshould be ableto take the cueball anywhereon the tablethat doesn’t

require a cushion. I call it the Fan Drillbecause of the pattern that the pathsof the cue ball makes in going to eachposition goal.Place the cue ball and object ball asshown. The object ball should be abouta ball off the long rail and two diamondsfrom the corner pocket. The cue ballis a diamond farther back and alsoabout a ball off the cushion. The goal is to make the object ball andtake the cue ball to each of thenumbered balls along the rail. Considerthe shot a success if the cue ball endsup within a hand span of the target ball. When first trying this drill, start with theone ball and go in numerical order. Forthe shots to spots along the far siderail, you may find it easier to put thecue ball closer to the rail to get moresideways speed. That’s OK at thestart. Similarly, to draw the cue ballback to the 15 spot, you may want a

straighter shot. This shot does not need — and should not have — any side spin, since

that makes the aiming harder and hasonly a very minor effect on the path ofthe cue ball if you don’t hit any cushion. All of your position control isdetermined by three factors: howmuch cut angle you have set up, thespeed of the shot, and how high or lowyou hit on the cue ball. If there is sidespin on the cue ball on this shot, youneed to work on hitting the cue ball onits vertical axis. You can adapt this drill to your own skilllevel. If you are a beginner, try for justthe first seven positions (1-7) and tryto do each position within four tries.Intermediates should try to get to eachlocation within three shots. Advancedplayers should be able to get to eachlocation on half of their shots.Remember that you have a hand-span’s margin of error in where the cueball finishes. This drill is easier to do if you take thepositions in order, so for an addedchallenge, pick the goal by drawing acard. This is the easy sort of shot you willhave either if you have ball in hand oryou have played great position on theprevious shot. An easy shot leads toeasy position. For some additionalchallenge, move the cue ball back adiamond or two.

Patience + Commitment = ImprovementSamm Diep (c) October 2007In my clinics, I always make sure I remind people that when you learn something

new, you can expect your game to godown before it can ever go up. Anyonecan attend a clinic or take a privatelesson and hear new information. But,to actually process the information andimprove requires a serious commitmentthat many of us just aren’t willing toaccept. It requires hours and hours ofmissed balls until we get it right and getused to the change. It will almost alwaysget worse before it gets better. Is that why so many players are afraid totake the next leap???Last year, Monica Webb and HelenaThornfeldt were passing through Denverand in a conversation with Monica sheadmitted to me that she knows that her

mechanics are not perfect. She’s aware that she shoots into her body but forher to make the change now to correct it would require taking months offfrom competing and she couldn’t afford to do so.This is understandable because at the time of our conversation, mechanicalflaw or not, she was ranked number four on the WPBA. For her to make sucha dramatic change would require an enormous commitment. Obviously, she’san outstanding player who’s worked hard enough to get to where she is,regardless of any imperfections.I don’t blame Monica for her decision one bit. For the rest of us on the otherhand, I doubt many of us can say that we can’t take the time off from competingbecause we’re currently ranked number four and can’t afford to. Making thatstatement meant that Monica recognized the responsibility involved in learningsomething new. She was aware of the impact it would have on herperformance.I am aware of this too. In the earlier part of this year, I began working with anew coach. With this change came the decision to fix my own stroke. Verysimilarly to Monica, I was not perfectly up and down from behind. My strokewent into my body and because I’d had a bit of a slip stroke, I was able to getaway with it in the past couple years. When I was stroking into my body, therewas only so far my stroke could follow through. In a sense, my body wasacting as a governor for my stroke. I always knew that it was not ideal, but itwasn’t until the beginning of this year that I committed to making the change. In the photographs below, you can see that my forearm was not hangingdirectly below my elbow. This caused my stroke to move into my body andrestricted my follow through. Making the change to open up my stroke helpedme deliver the cue straighter and improve my consistency.

BEFORE NOWAlthough I’m very happy with my change, it took about eight months beforefinally evolving into the stroke I have today. It required a much bigger change

and commitment than I initially realized. It meant lots and lots of missed ballsand failed tournament results but I was willing to make that sacrifice.Instead of just bringing my arm out, I actually had to open my body andadjust my stance in order to follow through straight. Making such a seriouschange at any level can be a scary thing. You don’t know if you’ll like it, if it’llwork for you, or even if it will help. But I was committed to improving and trulybelieved that this would help and it has.I’m very happy with my mechanical fix. My arm flows more freely and mystroke is more relaxed and requires less effort. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, butI committed and patient (for the most part) because I knew that’s what itwould take.PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT THE NEW & IMPROVED TIP JAR ATPOOLTIPJAR.COM. By Roger LongAdvanced Certified Instructor

In the past few articles we covered goodstroke fundamentals (Straight Alignment,Level Cue, Staying Down, FollowingThrough), and also covered the mostcommon mechanics used in achieving andmaintaining those good fundamentals. NowI’d like to tie the two together (fundamentalsand mechanics) and explain how theyrepresent what is probably the only “secret”that exists in pool. You know how it goes; everyone alwayswants to know the “secrets” of the pros. How do they do this, and how do they dothat? Well, when it comes to many shotsand strategies, there actually are a lot of

things that pros don’t necessarily like to share; but that doesn’t make anyof them secret. Anyone can find the answers to anything concerning thegame of pool if they just know where to look. But when it comes to the execution of good fundamentals, even most proscan’t tell you what they’re doing wrong on those rare occasions when theyactually do mess up. Their shortcomings often remain a mystery to thembecause they cannot watch themselves play. They usually need someoneelse, someone with a knowing eye, to tell them things like, “You jumpedup” or “You twisted your wrist.” So whether they do it all on their own, orsomeone else helps them do it, the secret to success must be unlocked. Now in unlocking this secret, everyone needs to be aware of a few certainthings: It doesn’t matter how many shots you know; it doesn’t matter howmany systems you’ve learned; it doesn’t matter how many books you’veread; it doesn’t even matter how many years you’ve been playing - if younever develop a good consistent stroke (which means consistently applyinggood fundamentals), then you will never be able to consistently execute allthat you know. Therefore, the following becomes the order of development that goodplayers generally adopt. They first develop a good stroke, and then theystart learning all of the shots. And from that point on, they try to use a goodstroke on each and every shot. Even when it comes to shots that require adeviation from one of the fundamental rules, good players will not allowthemselves to stray any farther from those rules than what is absolutelynecessary.Take, for instance, the fundamental rule of the “Level Cue”. If your cue ballis close to the rail, let’s say, and you want to stop it on contact with theobject ball in order to get position on another ball, you know that you willhave to elevate the back of the cue stick in order to put some initial backspin on the ball. And just for argument’s sake, let’s say this particular stop-shot calls for an approximate elevation of 25°. Now the good player will notelevate the cue any higher than that (say to 30°), because that would bestraying farther from the rule than what is absolutely necessary to get thejob done. And as soon as this one-time excepted shot is finished, the goodplayer will immediately return to following the rules. And it won’t matter to good players if a shot is worth $10K, or worth nothingat all; it won’t matter if they are up against champions, or playing their ownkids; it won’t matter if they are competing in front of hundreds of people, orjust practicing at home alone - good players will always strive to follow thefundamental rules. So the concept of learning good fundamentals, and then applying them ona consistent basis - regardless of the import of the situation - is whatseparates winners from also-rans. And that is the good players’ one true “secret” to success.

FundamentalsEnd of Story

Last years champion, Dennis Orender, had a terrible Saturday as he went two and out and then hung around longenough to watch his beloved Ohio State Buckeyes lose their first game ofthe season and their number one ranking in the college football standings.Everyone has bad days and unfortunately for the defending champion, thiswas his.Halfway through Sunday, the hot seat match was played between MitchEllerman and Scott Frost with Scott taking the hot seat and a place in theone race to (13) finals, when Scott defeated Mitch 9-5. Tyson Cole wasover on the one loss side, eliminating player after player as he made hisway to the third place match against Mitch. Merseal, Brad Johnson, Bobby Emmons, Chuck Evans, and Mike Pankoff, before losing to Mitch again and settling for third place. In the finals, Scott jumped out to a big lead and appeared to be on his wayto another state championship win. Mitch however, had other plans as tohow this championship match would wash out. As Scott joked with thecrowd, Mitch stayed focused and made his move to tie the match at 8-8 inthe race to (13). Scott won game number (21) to take an 11-10 lead but

Turkey Shootout

JD with Andy Ruth

By Stephen “SteveO” Spivack, Tournament DirectorMalarkey’s Pool & Brew (formerly CityLights Billiards) in Tacoma, WA held itsannual Thanksgiving Open 9 BallTournament on November 24th and25th. The field was full at 64 playersfrom Canada and Washington playingmodified Texas Express with races to7 on the A side and 5 on the B side.Leading off was Tacoma’s Jay Siongco, who quickly dispatched John Horsfall(7-6). Even though the match went hill-hill, Jay was still able to keep his breaksin check and play safe when need be.Junior Sardoncillo quickly handed Jayhis next match (7-2). Then Malarkey’sown Scott Thurston threw a curve, buthis play came up dry losing to Jay (7-6). Then in the money matches LeroyDorsey took the easy way out andfailed letting Jay once again slip by (9-8). The next match featured a localfavorite, Rich “The Hat” Geiler, but Jay was too much and sent Rich, who hadmostly played through the brackets, packing to the B side. In the end and atthe point, Dan Louie showed what a seasoned and always threatening playerhe is sending Jay waiting in 3rd for the winner of the B side (9-3).The top half of the B side was run early on by JD, after falling to Dan Louieon the A side. He set out on a mission beating last years 3rd place finisherSergio Tristan (5-2), Jing Gicoso (7-3), Tim Paget (7-3), Treon (7-0), “TheHat” (7-5), New York Frank (7-4) and Jay Siongco (7-4), only to face a rematchwith Dan Louie for the championship match. The bottom half of the B side was equally controlled by at first Bill Coats whodispatched Karl Kalama (5-2), Brandon Apodaca (5-3), Scott Nelson (5-3),Don Wirtiman (5-3) before finally giving his reign to Jeff Jimenez falling (3-7)in the first money match. Then Jeff was met with a blockade of strong breaksfrom New York Frank who soundly defeated Kevin Fong (7-4), Jeff Jimenez(7-1), Ed Hobbs (7-3) before coming up dry to the top half’s J.D. (7-4).The championship match was a show of true safeties and smart mental pool.JD started off early up (8-3), but Dan stormed back to make it (8-5), then (8-7), but on the next rack Dan came up dry and in seizing the opportunity tookan early three nine to make it (9-7). The next rack JD broke and ran to makeit hill - 7, and in the true form broke and ran to win the Malarkey’s Thanksgiving9 Ball Open.

from: Elaine Eberly - Tournament DirectorThirty players showed up at Dr Cue’s in Shoreline, WA, on the weekend ofNovember 10-11 to participate in the FirstAnnual Ray Lunde Memorial 8-Ball Tourney. Many who played were either a formerteammate of Ray’s over the course of his longshooting career or had met him on the tourneytrail. Before starting, Ray’s son, Raymond, hiswife, Erin, and two children (Hannah andNadine) thanked everyone for taking part. Folksthen shared their remembrances of their playingdays with Ray. Wynn Palmerton, Ray’s longtime teammate, recounted Ray’s ability to shootone-handed, the other behind his back with onefoot tucked behind the knee of the other leg -that is, on one leg. Those of us who knew Raylater in his life chuckled thinking of him doingthat a few short years ago! The memorial event also provided four of Ray’sformer teammates the pleasure of getting reacquainted after a long spellof 15 years. Bill, Larry, Pat and Wynn spent a number of hours togetherwith some talk of possibly playing together again. Watch out for someformidable competition should that happen! After Buster and Elaine set the draw tourney play started about 11:00. Manyof the first matches would go to the hill so the schedule got off to a slowpace. It sure didn’t look like the goal of eight returning players to Sunday

would be met butthe play took asurprisingly fastturn by mid-afternoon. On theA-side JD andChuckie weredispatching theiropponents ratherhandily. JasonEvans, recentwinner of theOpen-A in LincolnCity, gave JD histoughest run withJD prevailing at 7-

6 while Chuckie’s opponents were only able to take 5 games away fromhim in four race-to-7 matches. In addition to the 3 female entries who would do a small round-robin todetermine High Woman rights returning to fight for the win on Sunday wereZak, Gary G, Buster, Larry D, Michael J, Robert Colby, Chuckie and JD.Chuckie would lose the point to JD, 7-1. The final four were Robert, Michael

Ray Lunde Memorial TournamentJ, Chuckie and JD. Robert took the match against Michael J, 5-3, and then

met up with Chuckie who proved to all that agood night’s sleep before a hill-hill match doesa player good. Chuckie won the right to arematch with JD.The final match was one race-to-13 whereChuckie’s youth vs. JD’s 8-ball experiencewould portend the match’s outcome. JD ran thefirst two racks and played an early safe in thethird which Chuckie would make good to runbut then miss allowing JD to take it out. Thefifth rack had Chuckie running only to miss the8. JD would run the sixth and make nothing onthe seventh which permitted Chuckie to run outand finally get on the board at 6-1. JD ran thefollowing two racks; Chuckie the next. JD won

the final three games to take the first place win, 13-2.I’d like to thank Jeff and Matt, co-owners of Dr. Cue’s, for sharing the hallfor the tourney and Wynn for donating the large, beautifully-carved woodtrophy that Ray himself had designed during his stint as Seattle LeaguePresident. It is now the perpetual trophy for future memorial tourneys andwill hang at Dr. Cue’s. Thanks also go to Buster for helping me with thedraw and the board; and, most importantly, all who joined the play in Ray’smemory.1st $375 JD2nd $275 Chuckie Holyoke3rd $150 Robert Colby4th $100 Michael JHigh Woman: $50 Janie Reckard

By Matt MullallyPierce County Tribune Editor - Rugby, ND The Northern Lights Shootout was held a month earlier than in previous

years, but the results were thesame, according to MarkHamilton, tournament coordinator. “We had a good turnout ofplayers, actually a little higher onthe men’s side, and all in all, thingswent smoothly,” he said. “We evenfinished a little earlier than in pastyears.” The ninth annual Rugby eight-ball tournament was held Nov. 15-18 - about a month earlier due toscheduling conflicts withreserving pool tables. However, that date change willlikely prove beneficial in the long-term. “The weather conditions were

nice,” he said. “Weather is alwaysa concern, especially since wehave a lot of our players comingfrom far away. Holding thetournament in November (asopposed to early December)gives us a better chance of havingdecent weather.” Hamilton said the tournamentwill likely stick with the Novemberdate again next year.Repeat winners This year ’s tournamentfeatured repeat winners on bothon the men’s and women’s sides. Marc Oeschlager of Fargocaptured the men’s title, earning$3,000. Oeschlager won theinaugural tournament in 1999, and his victory snapped a streak of six straightyears where the title went to a player from Canada. There were 101 competing in the men¹s draw, and the payout was for

the top 32 finishers. For thesecond year in a row, the top localfinisher was Layne Opstedal ofrural Rugby. He finished in the17th through 24th spot, Hamiltonsaid. The consolation title went toJohn Traverse of Thunder Bay,Ontario. Jana Montour of Saskatchewanclaimed the women’s top prize. She took home $800. Montourwas champion in 2004. Therewere 16 competing in thewomen’s tournament. Prior to the eight-ball

tournament, the secondGeographical Center Cup nine-ball tournament, was held. Theevent had 16 Canadians and 16American players squaring off. This year’s champion was StanTourangeau of Vancouver, BC. Heearned $1,000. A number of participants againcame from north of the border, butother players came fromMinnesota, South Dakota andMontana, as well as from aroundthe state. Hamilton said thenumber of local playerscompeting was down slightly. He

speculated that could have been due to deer hunting season. The tournament was a boost for many local businesses, including motels, restaurants, gas stations and bars. Hamilton said the event would not bepossible without the support of the community, including volunteers. “We heard a lot of positive comments from players about the tournamentand the community,” he said. This was the second year the Geographical Center Chamber ofCommerce had coordinated the tournament.Shootout Champions

Claudia Shultz

Last time we spent time honoring one of our best shooters in our local poolscene. Shawn Modelo has excelled in the game of pool and hasaccomplished many tittles and top prices in our leagues. Today we want tohighlight another great contributor to our leagues and another veteran ofthe game of billiards.Claudia Shultz was first introduced to pool in 1990. She started playing

pool in 1991 and fell in lovewith the game right away. Shedidn’t start playing seriously, with knowledge and strategyuntil 1997. It was then that shedecided she wanted tobecome a competitive poolplayer so she took lesson andbegan to read books. She might not have victoriesand titles as some of ourother veteran’s players do;however her commitment tothe game of pool and desireto be an active member ofour DVPool Leagues is asstrong as anyone else. Herteams are not loaded with topshooters but new talent whoare eager to play but have

limited knowledge of the game. They are the players of tomorrow, if they stick to the game, of course.Claudia has had to deal with a lot of health issues which have taken her outthe game off and on and onto recovery. Claudia, however has found otherways to stay connected to the game she so much enjoys, and startedmaking pool ornaments, and items that pool players love. Her creative wayhas brought her full circle and she now has a full jewelry business whichincludes earrings, necklaces, rings and of course billiard items.Claudia has been to Las Vegas to compete in the National of the amateurstwice. “It’s such a great experience....much different than playing at home. The mind set for me is very different. I’m usually pretty generous with myfoul calls and such at home....not so there....it’s definitely a different levelof play”.She attended her first Expo event where she had her own booth, two yearsago and has managed to make a name for her self with her jewelry. Notonly is Claudia quite the competitor, she is fair, honest and a great lady. Her input as a league member and captain of her teams is valuable, and

her contribution within our local sceneas a pool player and /or a designer iswelcomed everywhere.Let us wish her a speedy recoveryfrom her last surgery, as well as muchluck in her business endeavors.

Player Profile: Claudia ShultzThe Diablo Valley Pool league is a non profit organization which is mainlygeared to the needs of the entry and mid level pool player. Our main goal isto prepare players to participate in the BCA-ACS National 8-BallChampionship which has been held at the Riviera in Las Vegas. All ourleagues are handicapped. We have just finished the Scotch doubles 8 ball league which meetsSaturday afternoons. We had 12 teams participating on a single round,10experienced teams and 2 new teams. The results are:1st $650 John Zapata/Louanne Laflamme2nd $485 Cathy Reeves/ Mike Sano3rd $340 Kacie Ragen/ Dave Gomez4th $295 VJ Lombago/Shawn Modelo5th $245 Eric Garma/Kara Mcdonnell6th $230 John Kelly/Steph Guin7th $210 Ray Fletcher /Tina M/Stacey Wilson8th $195 Lauren Rutkovitz/Robbie Lyng9th $180 Morris Foster/Lorie Declerrq10th $165 Frank Triollo/Annette Woods11th $145 Bill Wieman/Cony Mendoza12th $115 Greg Spitallier/Claudia
