The Brick House Pub in Kirkland wasthe site of the first annual WashingtonState Scotch Doubles Bar BoxChampionships over the weekend ofAugust 18-19. As of Friday the 17th,the field was full except for one playerwho could not find a female partner, but on Saturday morning, two couplespulled out. So it was that on that rainysummer Saturday, twenty-nineintrepid couples braved the drenchingdownpour of liquid sunshine andarmed only with their cue sticks, prepared to do battle over the greenfelt with a purse of $3100. $1,070 wasadded by Brick House Pub.Hosted by Manny’s Beer on Saturday and Budweiser and Budweiser Lighton Sunday and with several other vendors donating door prizes galore,(Everyone got something: a T-shirt, baseball caps, glasses, keychains,wall-hangings, light up stickers, and more), the atmosphere was certainlymuch lighter than it was outside.

Tournament Director Linda Carter, owner of Incentives International, alsodonated three 3 day/2 night LasVegas vacations for 2 to thetournament. Two went to the winnersand one was drawn from a raffle thatanyone could buy tickets for. Thelucky winner of that drawing wasDiane Kiske. Linda went on to drawan extra one that went to StanTourangeau. At the player’s meeting, patience andgood sportsmanship was stressedand the weekend went off without ahitch. Playing on only 4 tables madethe days long, but the players were

very patient and good sports about it.The funds were collected by 9:15, the draw was done by 9:30, and the player’smeeting commenced at 9:45, then matches started rolling at 10am. Playersshowed up from all over the NW and Canada, and the room was packed withchampions.

A Dollar for a gameof pool...what theIs about all I can say. I’ve watchedthe price go up from a quarter tofifty cents and then a few yearsback to what seemed to be theonly question was why? - seventy-five cents.I know that a lot of places acrossthe United States are a dollarmost of these places are in biggercities but not here in Bozeman,Montana. Is it because they needmore money to recover the tablesand most of the bars in the valleyare only covered once a year, sometimes more, but not usually.Could it be that I’m just an old guyand don’t like progress. Or could itbe that I feel a game of pool isn’tworth a dollar. How often shouldthey recover the table, take bettercare of the table for the increasedprice? And if they did, would it goup again?Do you remember when a pooltable was in a location to giveplayers a chance to do somethingin between buying a beer or two?Is it supposted to be a moneymaking proposition? Or is itsupposed to be entertainment forthe patrons? That is playingthemselves or watching two ormore good players put on anexhibition. What most bar goerscall, free entertainment.I would suspect as like in mostthings we the people don’t like, wecomplain but do little about it. Andwithin time the desire to play poolas much as we did before thedollar a game came in, we will beback playing as much as ever.If we stop playing it only hurts usthe player, so there is a solutionthat I have resigned to: if the gameis a dollar that means each playerputs in fifty cents for each gameplayed. There would be on moreloser pays. This might give youmore of an incentive to win thegame you are playing, but maybenot. As always you will make thedecision to play or not. Tourney Directors: Chris Rogers, FordOn August 11 & 12th, the NWPA heldits fourth tour stop of 2007 at therenowned “PARLOR” of Bellevue,WA. The place had changed sinceour lst visit, with the addition of adance floor, DJ booth and UltraLounge, a classy upgrade to analready impressive place. One playerfrom Wisconsin, who plays all acrossthe country with the WPBA, wassimply amazed with everything aboutthe room. A common mistakehowever, is to assume the prices areas high as the standards. Table ratesare comparable or lower than manypool rooms, for example, before 7pmits just $7.00 a table for as manyplayers as desired.Present for the tournament duration,as always, was Dave Lauer, the Pro Shop Manager, who took care of all

cue maintenance andrepairs for anyone whoneeded it.Play started promptly at10am Saturday with agood turnout for a summertournament and play waswell matched, so it was astruggle to survive to themoney matches onSunday. This meant thefinal eight players startedin the morning with Tamre’Rogers edging past AndyRuth 7-6 and Kyoko Sonegetting the best of LindaCarter 7-3 on the A side.Liz Cole besting Eve

Stockstill 7-2 and Mikki Small squeaked past Jo Woodward 7-6 to stayalive. Liz then beat Andy 7-4 and Linda took Mikki 7-3. Meanwhile Kyokocontinued dominating by winning 7-1 over Tamre’ to win the point. Lindacapitalized on a slow start by Liz to take a big lead and held on to win 7-4,

then got Tamre’ 7-2 to set up arematch of our last tournament finals. For the first time in many matches,Kyoko missed shots she normallymakes and the score was tied early3-3, but Kyoko then took advantageof Linda missing a few key shots andwon 9-4. Being undefeated in anymatch in her first four tournaments,Kyoko Sone arguably maybe the bestplayer ever to compete in the NWPA.Her next stop is definitely the Pro Tour.So come out and watch at UncleJack’s in Lynnwood, WA on Sept 13-14 to see if someone can take herplace atop the board. Also, the topten rankings are important as not onlythe #1 gets invited to WPBA events. We thank all involved with the NWPA,starting with the spectators, but

ending with the wonderful people at The Parlor who have supported us sostrongly and making this WPBA Qualifier for 2008. Thanks and we’ll seeyou at Uncle Jack’s.CORRECTION: The NWPA would like to apologize for the mis-reported results of the Second Chance Tournament from June’s event atUncle Jack’s. Golf PoolBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

San Francisco Billiard Academy

Bob Jewett

You may have heard of the game of golf that’s playedon a snooker table. This game is something verydifferent from that and a lot closer to the outdoorform of golf. I discovered this game while readinga very useful booklet called “The First Five Yearsof Chalk-Up.” This was published in the 1960s bythe A. E. Schmidt billiard table company for roomsin their part of the country around St. Louis. Eachmonth they published a new game for the roomsand other customers to try out.The rules of golf pool are simple. Any number canplay, but a foursome is good. Each player beginswith the balls positioned as shown for each hole.He breaks from behind the line and tries to clear

the table in as few strokes as possible. Shots don’t have to be called, andyou can play any ball at any time. Record the number of strokes for eachplayer for each hole. If youscratch, you have to spot any ball you made, add a penalty stroke, andtake ball in hand behind the line. As in golf, the lowest total wins.Run this as a weekly competition, with a leader board prominently displayedby the table. If you find 18 holes takes too long, you can cut back to nine, with an 18-hole playoff for the four leaders.Par for the whole course is 82, assuming you are not going to make anythingon the break except for the two par-1 holes, and you make one ball oneach of your other strokes. There are several holes where you can playfor a specific ball on the break. Hole 6 is a good one for a birdie — just playthe cut shot — but the same idea on hole 8 doesn’t work as well becauseyou will still have to break. Get creative. If you hit hole 11 from the back (offthe end cushion), the head ball has a chance to go two cushions to theside pocket. On some tables hole 5 offers a chance for the corner balls togo around the table on four cushions and back to the corner pockets. Tryvarious speeds and hits. Making a ball on the break on hole 4 is a standardone pocket shot — use draw.If you find some other good ball configurations, that maybe reduce the parto 72, send them in and I may publish an update. If you need a scorecard, let me know and I’ll send you a file you can print with the shots on eachcard.

You never can tell where you will find a pool player these days. On Sundaythe 5th of august I got up at 5:00 am ready to get a lot of work done. I willmiss Mass today because I have so much to get done before I go on thetrip to So. Cal. and I was really booking. I mentioned in a couple articlesthat if you want to get a job done right do it your self. Pat Jr., Aaron Curti andmyself had spent several days trying to get the Hedckman table that I wroteabout last February back to a workingtable. Every thing we had done beganto fall apart. I bumped one of the railsthat I had been avoiding because thesetting strip showed at spot where thesetting strip was coming loose fromthe rail. Bang off it came. I noticed thatthe strip had not been jointed flat so Ishoved it through the jointer. I forgotthat we had made them out of mapleinstead of poplar. The Maple had atwisty end and it bounce off the jointer and my finger went in before theguard could close. Wham I knew that I w as in trouble. There were severalwords not suitable to print and I pulled back so quickly that the machinewas only able to take a small bite. Blood squirted all over and I ran to thehouse to get a clean dishtowel to wrap them. It is a 30mi. trip to OHSUhospital but I made it in record time. Luckily it did not injure my funny bone

so I was in good humor. An IV of Morphine and we started a party. The handsurgeon I asked for did not want to be disturbed on Sun. morning so I hada chance to meet Dr Matt, an orthopedic surgeon. I was not about tocomplain for a stitch in time saves nine.Of course we got to talking about pool and last year he purchased a GoldenWest table. Of course I would much rather that it was one I built, but my

second choice has always beenGolden west. He got the fingers sewnup and the conversation continued onpool. He loved the looks of his tablebut he felt that it did not play as wellas his friends. It was slow and veryfuzzy . The ball wobbled side to sideas it slowed down. I asked if hebought an upgrade in cloth but it wasnever suggested. It so important to give all the alternate

suggestions. I haven’t sold a table without Simonis, Gorina, or Mali’s speedcloth since 2000 when I did a very expensive table for Brian Grant whowas a star with the Portland Trailblazers. The interior designers picked acolor that was not exactly matched by Simonis. It was a Gold tone. I toldBrian it was a mistake and after the table was up for three weeks he gotdisgusted with the play and called me to change it. Dr Matt is at the samespot and we will change it when I get back from So. Cal, this whole story isa lesson in the Hurrier you go the Behinder you get.I want to thank those of you who read www.onthebreaknews.com and tellyour friends about From the Work Bench. I received a call on my cell fromJeff in Detroit. He got the restore bug on the old tables and has been doingit for a couple of years. He has a job in the real world but his passion is oldBBC beauties and there are a lot of them in the Midwest. His first call washis opportunity to get a Kling and wondered if he should pay the price. Itwas reasonable so I told him to go ahead. He found a Naraganset and onethat was so oxidized that we were not sure what he had. A bit of stripping

By: Don “Cheese” AkerlowI have been hearing for over a yearnow that the billiard industry is in adecline and there is no connectionbetween the billiard industry and thepool players. Manufacturers arecutting back and laying off, thebilliard industry corporations basedin the U.S. also cutting back andlaying off, too many examples thatit would be unfair to name only a few.Retail billiard suppliers are findingsales dropping upward of 50% andmore. Even my own retail store issuffering a lack of viewer shipthrough the summer of ’07. Yes,sales are down. I have beensomewhat outspoken to thecontrary that the billiard industry isin a decline. This is mostly derivedfrom the trips I take to deliver “TheBreak” to Spokane, Seattle,Portland, Salem and returninghome. Although summer has beenslow as usual for pool halls no morethan any other year. I do not find alack of enthusiasm or do I find a lackof participation in pool leagues, pooltournaments or pool players. On arecent trip to Phoenix and Tucson,Arizona, where the temperatures liein the one teens that is 113 to 117degrees. Visiting a half a dozen toa dozen locations that support pooland pool leagues, the Arizona PoolNation to be as exuberant andthriving as anywhere else I havebeen.

In many of the locations I went to,players were telling me of playingmore nights in different leagues, playing in more tournaments andare excited about playing in theupcoming leagues. With anewfound friend that I had onlyspoken to many times on the phone,Dick Breese, he introduced me toowners, managers and tournamentdirectors by the score. Theythemselves showed the sameenthusiasm about the game that weall love. Perhaps the corporateworld of the billiard industry throughsniping, listening to corporate beancounters as well asmismanagement and bottom lines.Perhaps they should take a pagefrom the most unsuspectingconfidant that they would expectand that would be the pool playersthemselves. The recent trip toArizona only bolsters my belief thatthe corporate entities of billiardscannot and will not bully, intimidateor tell us what we like and what wewill have. Pool nation is strong andvibrant. Perhaps the corporateentities should invest in their grassroots of pool players, the poolleagues as well as professional andamateur pool tournaments. Ofcourse, this is only one pool playersopinion. What do you think?email: [email protected]

Holly beat Kristin 7 to 3 which put Kristin out in 3rd place.Holly went on to play Mello for the final match. Mello won the first game andthen Holly won the next two games by making a 5-9 combo, then a quick 1-9 combo which put her in the lead 2 to 1. Mello came back right back andmade an incredibly difficult kick shot at a 3-9 combo which tied it up 2-2!Holly won game 5, then snapped the 9 on game 6 which made the score4-2. Susan let out a gasp in frustration. Holly then broke and ran the nextrack down to the 8-ball but left herself hooked. She tried to play a safety, but ended up leaving Mello with a difficult shot. Mello made that shot, butmissed an easy shot on the 9. Holly made the ball, which put her up 5-2.Holly also won the next game which put her on the hill 6-2. Mello, didn’tseem to let it phase her and as cool as a cucumber, won the next 3 games, which made the score 6-5. But then Holly snapped the 9 again which wonher the first set.Mello won the lag and broke to start the 2nd set. Mello missed the 8 ballthen stood up and to our surprise, announced she would need to forfeit thematch. She had been worried all day about making her flight to Canada ontime and it was already getting to be after 6:30pm which was really pushingthe time crunch. E.O.S. Scotch Doubles TournamentPHOENIX, AZJuly 25th - On Wednesday night the Paradise Valley Pool League closed theseason with another banquet & payout party. This session saw cash payouts to

the players totaling$23,400. Followingthe banquet everyyear is the blinddraw scotch doublestourney thateverybody looksforward to. On thisnight 48 playerssigned up for therace to 2 8-ballevent. There wereplenty of teamsthat were favoritesafter the draw, however, that neverguarantee’s cashingin this event. 1st

timer Martin Ramos has only starting playing pool 6 months ago and waspartnered with a veteran leaguer Jerry Stuckart. After moving from Wisconsinsome years ago, this seasoned 8-ball’er took Martin under his wing and marchedthrough the field of 24 teams undefeated. They got to the hot seat by wins

over a Bye, Chad Lovelace/DuncanBarnhill, Aaron Purdy/LeandreaGaff, Manuel Bella/Jim Money, andLarry Patrick/Tyson Cole(E.O.S.Singles Champion). Coming back tochallenge these two in the finalswas Bryan Sheperd of the 1st Placedivision A Kitty’s & KarenBurgess(3rd place division B). Theretour through the field saw matchwins over Monica Sisneros/EarlScott, Dick Breese/RichardNewman, Ivan Noriega/Aaron Scott

before a loss to Larry/Tyson. After regrouping they continued their run on theleft side of the board with wins over Dick/Richard again, Al Ruiz/ReyesGutierrez & Larry/Tyson before their finals loss to the tournament winnersJerry & Martin. I must point out that Jerry placed second in last seasons BlindDraw Scotch event. On this note I have to give a hugethank you to Metro Sports Bar, ourbanquet host this season. Al Ruiz andstaff really provided a first class venueto host our league’s biggest event. Alarge buffet of wings, sandwiches, tacobar & potato salad that seemed to keepcoming wave after wave until you couldeat no more was laid out. Metro alsoadded $240 to the scotch doublestourney after all was said and done. Forthose of you outside the Metro Phoenix area, make sure that when you’re inPhoenix you come by Metro Sports Bar. They feature 8 Gold Crowns, 9 ValleyBar Boxes, Off Track Betting, a huge bar & a top notch kitchen. Billy Palmer also breezed through the winners side with wins over Odom,Robert Aldana, Dan Russo, Jeff Gregory (9th), Austin Murphy (3rd) and inthe Hot Seat a good win over the young Filipino Deo Alpajaro.Deo had wins over Chai Smith, JJ Cain (7th), Chris MacDonald (4th),Ralph Daloin (5th), John Avalos (5th) before losing to Mr. Palmer. In the last 4 years of Monthly Jamborees, Billy Palmer has won both eventon the same 3 times, a feat that has not been duplicated even once.

Samm Diep (c) May 2007If you have not already, there will come a time in

your game when what you’re doing alone is justnot enough. It’s then that you will considerchecking out a pool class or taking somelessons. If you’re fortunate enough to live in atown where there are free clinics and instructionavailable, jump on it! That’s a great place to start.

More often than not, those instructors alsoteach privately and you can get a good feelfor their teaching style. If you’re not so fortunate or if you feel youneed some more personal attention, youmay want to consider private lessons. As afellow player who has worked with a varietyof instructors, here’s a list I’ve compiled with

some things to think about when considering your new coach. Decide whichare most important to you.1. What are your goals? What is your purpose for seeking instruction?

2. Level of commitment? Are you looking for a coach/mentor or just lessons?

3. Knowledge & Experience?

4. Reputation / Referrals?

5. Personality & Communication?

6. Their own playing ability?

7. Cost & Location? What are your goals? Are you a beginner player, starting from scratch thatneeds help with the basic fundamentals? Are you an above average playerthat could just use some fine tuning? Or, are you an advanced player thatwould just like to work on patterns and strategy? If you don’t really know, agood instructor should be able to assess your game and prescribe theright medicine. To get the most out of your lessons, think about what youwould like to achieve before you get in there. But remember to stay open-minded to learning new things.Mentor vs. Instructor? What level of commitment do you expect from yourinstructor and from yourself? Depending on what your goals are with pool, you may feel you only need one lesson for now. You may just want to learnsomething fun and new every couple months. If you’re a more serious

tournament player, perhaps you want someone to travel with you and workwith you on a more regular, frequent basis. This obviously requires a biggerinvestment from both parties. Whatever the commitment level is, you andyour instructor should both be working towards the same goal.Knowledge & Experience? It may be tough to tell sometimes how muchknowledge and experience an instructor has until you’re already workingtogether. “Reputation / Referrals” can help in this area. A great coach doesnot need to have previous coaching experience in order to do a good job. They may never have given one lesson before, but if they have the knowledgeand the heart to see you succeed, it will work.Reputation / Referrals? In the meantime, you can always ask around. Aswith any relationship, a coach that worked for one player may not work foranother and vice versa. Do the research. If it doesn’t work out, try someoneelse. It’s not like you married them.Personality & Communication? This was important to me, personally, because I understand my learning style and I would not be able to workwith someone that could not communicate well. The best players may notalways be the best instructors because they may not be able to articulatewhat they’re trying to teach you. Consider how effective an instructor’steaching style is.Their own playing ability? Like I mentioned before, the best player may notbe the best instructor. However, is it important to you that your instructorbe a better player than you? Will you still be able to learn from someonewho may not be able to execute the shot they are teaching you? These areall important things to consider before committing to a coaching relationship.Cost & Location? Will these two words bear any weight for you whenconsidering your new coach? Only you can decide.Only you can know what you’re looking for. My current coach/mentor worksfull-time as an architect who just happens to love pool and plays it incrediblywell. He has a ton of experience and after months of picking his brain andplaying together, I asked him if he would consider taking me on. We’vealways been on the same page about strategy and the mental side of thegame. He’s organized and is a great communicator. We’re in touch on adaily basis and I feel very fortunate that it’s a good match. If you’re not solucky, keep looking. Knowing what’s important to you will help.Samm Diep, “Cherry Bomb”House Pro at Table Steaks East in Aurora, ColoradoAuthor of “You Might Be A D Player If... The Mechanics:Fundamental Facilitators

By Roger Long, Advanced Certified InstructorLast month I wrote an article that focused on pool’s fundamentals. In it I

pointed out that there are only four thingsthat are truly fundamental in the making ofa good stroke. Those four things are: 1.Straight alignment, 2. Level cue, 3. Staydown, and 4. Follow through. Now it is time to talk about some things thatwill help to develop and maintain a goodstroke. These things involve the stance, the bridge, the head, the elbow, and the grip, and they are the things that make up theactual mechanics that are employed in anygiven player’s style. At this point you might be saying to yourself,“Wait a minute. I thought all those thingswere part of the fundamentals.” To that, I

answer, no.If you read my other article you might remember that I said many thingshave traditionally been accepted as fundamental truths, but those thingsare not truly fundamental; they are merely accessories in the acquisition ofgood fundamentals. That’s because the particular way a player goes aboutgetting his cue to go through the cue ball straight and level is of no realconsequence as long as he indeed gets the job done. But at the sametime, I feel that any player who practices certain recommended mechanicaltechniques will, in the long run, have an advantage over those who do not.Let’s look at a couple of examples of what I am talking about. If your swing arm, from the elbow down to the grip hand, points straight upand down as you set up for the shot, then it is a simple matter of pullingstraight back on the cue, and then letting it go straight forward. But if youhave an angular alignment in your forearm, it will equate to stick movementat an angle to the line of aim, and that will have to be adjusted in mid-strokein order to achieve a straight-on-line hit on the cue ball. Not that this can’tbe done; but why take the hard route? The same applies if you are in the habit of twisting your grip hand in or out, rather than letting it hang straight down. A twisted wrist puts a twistingaction on the cue, and again, that is something that has to be compensatedfor in mid-stroke.There are a few other recommended mechanical techniques to go alongwith these two that can help facilitate better motion efficiency in the stroke, and next month we’ll begin presenting all of them in a little more visualdetail. In the meantime remember, all good strokes may not include goodmechanics, but good mechanics almost always make for good strokes.

Don “Coyote” WalkerA testimonial from his loving wife:I remember he was in a tournament playing John Evans and John wasgoing to do a shot Don felt was wrong and could cost him the game. Donstopped John and explained why he shouldn’t do the shot and explainedwhy he should do a different shot. John took Don’s advice and made theshot and won the game. People watching what Don did told him what afool he was, “You gave the game away and you would’ve won”. Don toldthem he couldn’t see John make the mistake. Don has done this before -stop people doing wrong shots. John was happy he won, but was gratefulto Don for what he did. People come to Don to sell their cue sticks, cases, even pool tables because he’s honest and they know they will get theirmoney.Don loves to make people happy and he’s right there if you need help.Merle and Boomer have to go to the airport, no matter what time, Donmeets them at the airport and picks up Van (he call his van) laughing andpicks them up, when they get back from Vegas. Don has had people askhim if he can fix dents in cue sticks. Don never hesitates, gets gloss out, goes to town and fixes the problem. If he can help other ways he does. I’veseen him move people that couldn’t get help to move and Don’s there tomove them. Players don’t have rides to tournaments or to leagues call andDon comes and picks them up. People at tables playing pool and havingproblems, Don will go off if he’s playing someone and go help that person.Don has a caring heart. He gets calls at all hours and Don answers thequestions. The staff at Half Time have a saying that Don lives at the HalfTime Bar & Grill because he’s up there a lot until late hours. I’ve beenasked, don’t I worry and why should I as I know my husband. Don has atemper when shots don’t go the way he wants. He was taught, you do ajob, you do it right. He’s not mad at anyone but himself - he’s very hard onhimself. A lot of people don’t know Don was born with a clubfoot. He wasborn with his feet backwards and had to have many operations. The foolishdoctor’s didn’t think he could ever walk. He wears a brace on his left leg sohe can walk at times. Don is in great pain, his ankles really are in pain. Youcan tell by watching him walk and know its different but he never lets on.He is a man that cares about people and loves making them happy. He’s excited he won a free trip to Vegas for getting the most new teams inthe league. Don does not run leagues down, each has a purpose he feels.Pick the one you feel suits you but don’t bad mouth leagues. He hates tosee people abuse pool tables. He takes pride in the work he does to keepthe balls and the tables ready for pool players. People have complimentedDon saying, “It’s so nice to come to a place to play pool and see the conditionthe balls are in.

I would like to add my two cents. I always looked forward running into Coyotebecause I know I have a game of pool to play and over the years we havebecome friends and that friendship I honor. Don “Cheese” Akerlow

As summer comes to a close, it’s time to start thinking about fall leagues. We have had quite a few leagues already playing this summer. The Midwayin Oregon City, The Nite Hawk in North Portland, City Lights in Tacomaand some of the Central Oregon establishments have all been hosts tosummer play. It seems to be a toss up as to whether pool players wouldlike to take the summer off so to speak. Well for those of you who havebeen focusing on barbecues and other sunny day activities, I say dust offthose pool cues! The month of September has leagues beginning in Astoria/Seaside,Longview/Kelso, Eugene/Lane County, Vancouver, Beaverton and a newMidway (Oregon City) league. Beaverton will also be running a JuniorLeague for the third year. October will kick off Olympia, Federal Way andanother Nite Hawk session. If you don’t see your area - don’t despair;some of your operators are still finalizing their schedules. Please contactthem, or your league officers, show your interest and we’ll be happy to getyou the information you need to participate. Remember for those of youwho are true pool junkies and want to play in many leagues, your initial onetime membership dues enables you to play in as many different sessionsand different leagues as your heart desires.I look forward to seeing you all at the regional tournament. Speaking ofwhich, the dates have been confirmed for the 15th through the 20th ofApril, 2008 at Little Creek Casino Resort. Events will include Scotch, singles- both 9 ball and 8 ball and 8-ball 4 person teams. The races were to 5 on the A side, 4 on the B side, lag for break, no coaching, call pocket with modified BCA rules, meaning you could not win or lose onthe break with the 8 and you also could not scratch on the 8 at any timewithout loss of game.Even with a winner breaks format, there were many hill-hill matches. It wasnice to see a few teams that were put together at the last minute got into themoney. From the outset, it looked like the strongest team was Kyoko Soneand her boyfriend, Naoki Wakimoto who ploughed through a stellar field withwins over travelmateYuko Kudaka and Crow, Andrea Saenz-Maes and GlennAtwell, Linda Carter and Mike Zimmerman, and Margie Avlon and StanTourangeau for the point. Doug Asleson, Billiards CommissionerBig Sky State Games

On July 21st players participatedin an event for mostly one reason,“Love of the Game”. Billings washost for the 22nd annual Big SkyState Games and Billiards wasfortunate to be one of the eventsincluded. Our fifth year was ourlargest in terms of participants. We had no money added. Wehad no prize money. We had noCalcutta.Players came from Butte, GreatFalls, Saco, Culbertson and othercommunities not close to Billings. We had table runs. We had jumpshots made. We had somegames “given away”. We playedsingles and doubles. We started at 10 am and finished

at 11pm. We played for the gold, the silver and the bronze. I personallyhanded out over 30 medals and almost everyone was as proud as anyoneI ever handed a check to.They came and they competed. Some players’ won and some playerslost. The competition was fierce and the sportsmanship was almost perfect. We played just because we love this game. It is not always about justwinning or losing it is always about competing. We played mostly for “loveof the Game”.If you are from Montana, next year you can play in the Big Sky State Gamesand you can play “ For Love of this Game”.

Mountain View, CA - Forthe past three years, theWWR has held theirAugust stop at theCalifornia Billiard Club, however, the turnout thisyear was somewhat of asurprise. Last year ’sevent had 31 participants, but on the weekend ofAugust 25-26, 2007, therewere only 14 women.Nevertheless, there weremany tough players in thefield. With a race to sevenformat, the first day was along stretch for those coming backon Sunday. Matches finished uparound 10:00pm and included aquarter-final match between sistersMary and Michelle Rakin. The final four returned on Sunday:for the hot seat, WPBA player LisaD’Atri versus previous tourchampion Michelle Rakin. On theone-loss side, last year’s tourwinner Jessie Killian and MaryRakin, so lots of hard work aheadfor all of them.

Lisa’s defeat on for the hot seat andJessie’s triumph on the one-lossmeant a battle for a chance againstMichelle in the finals. Jessie shotwith a quick tempo and defeatedLisa 7-2. The finals were a one setvictory for Michelle, 7-5.
