2016/2017 Year in Review and President & CEO Updates

Following an an-nouncement on the release of TREB's 2016/2017 Annual Report and a video Year in Review, TREB CEO John DiMichele took to the stage to speak on the Association's continued push to posi-tion TREB as a thought leader in the in-dustry by providing the latest data and research to inform evidence-based deci-sion-making and put the focus on facts.

In President Tim Syrianos' Meeting address, he spoke on TREB's Spotlight campaign, the ef-forts of TREB's Gov-ernment Relations team, and several upcoming events including TREB FEST and REALTOR® QUEST.

For the second year running, TREB wel-comed Benjamin Tal, Deputy Chief Economist and Managing Direc-tor at CIBC World Markets, back to the podium to deliver an informative keynote address. TREB Seeks Member Feedback, Takes Action on

REBBA 2002 Review

In two highly-attended focus group sessions hosted by TREB, Members were invited to provide their feedback

on reforms to the Real Estate and Business Brokers Act, 2002 (REBBA 2002).

Currently in its second phase of review, REBBA 2002 is an important piece of legislation that regulates how you trade in real estate. Members who attended the focus groups were granted the unique opportunity to voice their thoughts and opinions on issues with the legislation through a combination of live polling and facilitated discussions among like-minded professionals.

Earlier this month, TREB conducted an online survey to gain further insight from Members.

Your feedback is important to us and will help TREB formulate its submis-

sion, where we’ll suggest updates for modernizing this legislation.

If you missed the focus groups and survey, it’s not too late to share your feedback. We encourage you to learn more and to share your feedback on the review of REBBA 2002 by visiting rebbareform.ca or by emailing Alina Oprea, Government Relations Specialist at [email protected].

This month’s focus groups took place at TREB’s offices at 1400 Don Mills Road and were facilitated by Larry Cerqua, TREB Past President.

Real estate professionals operate in a highly regulated industry and must follow many rules and policies. Salespeople and Brokers often have questions about how to stay compliant.

TREB, in cooperation with RECO, has developed a Q & A for the most commonly held compliance questions.

This regular column focuses on one topic per month, with the goal of helping you stay compliant in your day-to-day business.

Avoiding Contract Interference According to Section 7 – Dealings with Other Registrants – of the REBBA 2002 Code of Ethics:

7. (1) A registrant who knows or ought to know that a person is a client of another

registrant shall communicate information to the person for the purpose of a trade in real estate only through the other regis-trant, unless the other registrant has con-sented in writing.

(2) If a broker or salesperson knows or ought to know that a buyer or seller is a party to an agreement in connection with

a trade in real estate with a brokerage other than the brokerage that employs the broker or salesperson, the broker or sales-person shall not induce the buyer or seller to break the agreement.

For likely scenarios on Avoiding Contract Interference and a full list of Best Practic-es, visit our handy document here.

Best Practices

In an event-filled evening on Septem-ber 26, featuring dinner and live per-formances, TREB recognized those

Members who have achieved the distinc-tion of 25 Year and 50 Year Membership.

Host and current TREB President Tim Syrianos announced 26 new 50 Year Members and 523 new 25 Year Members, encouraging attendees to "celebrate those dedicated REALTORS® who continue to make a positive contribution to the real estate profession."

Last month, TREB celebrated its long tradition of giving back to the community by handing

off the keys to yet another Habitat for Humanity home to one deserving GTA family.

TREB Board of Director Nito Morcos-Brown was in attendance at the dedica-tion ceremony that took place at 140

Pinery Trail, where the Kabir-Akter family was welcomed to their newly-built home.

TREB is proud to have donated $150,000 in support of the home ownership dreams of the Kabir-Akters, a family of four who previously lived in an under-sized one-bedroom apartment.

TREB to Sponsor Candy Cane Carolers!

Oh, the weather outside is frightfulBut the fire is so delightful, And since we’ve no place to go, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

It doesn’t show signs of stoppingAnd I brought some corn for poppingThe lights are turned way down lowLet it snow, let it snow, let it snow

When we finally say goodnight,How I’ll hate going out in the stormBut if you really hold me tight, All the way home I’ll be warm.

The fire is slowly dying, And, my dear, we’re still good-bye-ing, But as long as you love me so,Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

We wish you a Merry Christmas; We wish you a Merry Christmas; We wish you a Merry Christmasand a Happy New YearGood tidings we bringTo you and your kin;Good tidings for Christmasand a Happy New Year
