Regulatory Evolution of Sign By-Laws – Reviewing Sign

By-Laws in Southern York Region

TREB and BDAR Enter into MLS® Services Partnership

The Barrie & District Association of REALTORS® (BDAR) and the Toronto Real Estate Board

(TREB) have entered into an MLS® services partnership to provide Members with more extensive MLS® services and greater resources.

On August 11, 2016, the official agree-ment between the two Boards was signed at a BDAR Special Board Meeting, held at the Kempenfelt Centre in Innisfil.

“This MLS® services partnership will be beneficial to Members from both BDAR and TREB as well as consumers,” said Mike Douglas, BDAR 2016 President. “Members from both Boards will have access to a larger database, creating an easy flow of information for REALTORS® so they can provide the best service to their clients.”

Recognizing the overlap in markets, this partnership is a responsible step forward that will remove barriers and open the flow of information.

BDAR and TREB will remain separate Boards, each with their own identity and Member benefits; however, each Board will have access to a better database and more resources, enabling Members of both Boards to serve their clients more effectively and efficiently. For more in-formation, click here.

In this fourth article of our ongoing series, we examine the regulatory evolution of sign by-laws. We also review

the sign by-laws of York Region’s southern municipalities: Markham, Whitchurch-Stouffville, Vaughan, and Richmond Hill.

Municipal sign by-laws regulate all as-pects of signs, but like any other law or regulation, sign by-laws are not set in stone for eternity. New administrations, challenges, protocols, and public dis-course encourage reviewing and updating the by-laws. TREB works with municipal-ities to ensure that updated sign by-laws take into account our industry’s business practices and consumers’ expectations.

Since sign by-laws are so often revised, it’s good practice to stay current. TREB en-courages Members to review York Region’s sign by-laws to ensure compliance. Click here to review the municipal sign by-laws. By-law highlights from the southern municipalities of York Region:

• Markham – For sale/lease signs shall be removed within 14 days after the prop- erty is no longer for sale or lease.

• Richmond Hill – Open house signs are not permitted. Only one (1) for sale/lease real estate sign is permitted per property.

• Vaughan – For sale/lease signs shall be removed within 14 days after the prop-

erty is no longer for sale or lease.

• Whitchurch-Stouffville – Open house signs are not permitted. Only one (1) for sale/lease real estate sign is permitted per property.

REALTORS® are responsible to com- ply with the municipal sign by-laws.

Next month, we will highlight municipal sign by-laws for Durham Region.

What’s In Your REALTOR® Toolkit?Organizing Collaborate’s Email Notifications

Ontario Plans to License Home Inspectors

In the June issue of Across The Board, you learned how to edit notification settings in Collaborate. Changing the

default notification settings is important because you can get a large number of

emails about saved searches and client activity. Even after you have customized Collaborate’s notification settings, you may still have a challenge dealing with all of the messages generated by the system.

Create a rule (if using Outlook or Hot-mail/LiveMail) or a filter (if using Gmail or Yahoo) to direct email coming from [email protected] to a custom folder rather than your Inbox. In this way, all of your Collaborate email will be in one location and your Inbox will be less crowded. Just don’t forget to check your custom folder regularly be-cause when things are out of sight, they can be out of mind.

Ontario’s Minister of Govern-ment and Consumer Services announced the province’s intent

to introduce legislation this fall to regu-late the home inspection industry.

If passed, the proposed changes would:

• Require home inspectors to be licensed with proper qualifications

• Set minimum standards for contracts, home inspection reports, disclosures, and the performance of home inspections

• Establish an independent Administra-

tive Authority to administer and enforce the home inspection licensing legislation and associated regulations

TREB and OREA have been working with the Government of Ontario on modernizing the home inspection indus-try. Click here to read TREB’s written feedback to the province on this issue and here to read OREA’s support of the Minister of Consumer Services’ efforts to regulate the home inspection industry.
