Kedibone’s mother, Maggi Makamedi, left Kedibone in the care of neighbours on 25 September in order to attend a funeral with her other child, a six year-old boy. According to Captain Elias Sekanka, the new head of detectives at Mookgophong, she never arrived at the funeral and it is not clear where she was. On her return to Moogophong on the 6th of October, she found that Kedibone was already gone. The neighbours told Makamedi that Kedibone’s father had picked her up, and Makamedi reported the case to the police. A man who knows the family, Lucas Legodi, said that the police initially did not want to open a case of kidnapping. He approached Phillip van Staden of AfriForum for help. “After Van Staden spoke to them, they reacted,” said Legodi. The stepfather was contacted. He allegedly confirmed that he had picked up the child from the neighbours and that she had been staying with him, but he promised to return her. The father allegedly then committed suicide on 8 of October in Mokopane, however, and did not mention Kedibone in his suicide note. His mother told the police that Kedibone was never there. The DA in Limpopo will be meeting withthe Minister of Social DevelopmentBathabile Dlamini, seeking a thoroughexplanation regarding alleged illegaldeductions on the social grantsespecially from the elderly peopleacross the province. In Bela Bela, a group of people are

reported to be providing scammingservices to unsuspecting beneficiariesby giving them loans and deducting theirmoney even after the periods agreed onhad passed. The scammers put up theirbusiness near the local civic centreduring pay-out days. Meanwhile, anotherdisturbing issue is the illegal pay-point thatis established at a local tavern, which alsoposed as a danger to the local taxiindustry.A source in the Warmbaths Taxi

Association (WATA) said that theirbusiness is threatened because the tavernpays out social grants at its premises andoffers beneficiaries loans. The sourcecontinued to say that this caused thebeneficiaries to stop going to town and ifthey do not, that means they also do notuse their taxis as a means of transport toget there, meaning that the organizationloses out during the pay-out periods.Meanwhile, the DA states that they

discovered some of the recurring illegaldeductions during oversight visits tosome of the SASSA social grant paypoints, where several beneficiarieshanded over evidence that illegaldeductions from their grants continues, and have been taking place for almost ayear. One of the beneficiaries’ slip showed

that R55 was deducted from her grantfor Prepaid Airtime and a further R60was deducted for pre-paid electricity. Another beneficiary, who is supposed to

get a R1650 grant and her child caregrant, produced a print-out from Shopriteshowing that her grant was R1 322. Thereis no explanation for the deduction of

admitted that these deductions were illegalbut indicated that the matter was still beinginvestigated. Deductions from socialgrants have been a bone of contention formany months and despite assurances bythe agency that they will bring a halt tothese illegal deductions, the situationcontinues to go on unabated. SASSA andthe Department of Social Developmentwere expected to present their annualreports to the Department’s nationalcommittee on Wednesday, 15 Octoberand we will be pushing for an immediateintervention and explanation from MinisterDlamini,” said Deputy Shadow Minister ofSocial Development Lindy Wilson.“We have noted that these illegal activities

are taking place internally at SASSAtherefore explanations must be given as tohow many SASSA members have beenexposed and what charges and steps havebeen taken against them. Grants are givento the poorest of the poor in South Africaand we will not accept that the vulnerablebe subjected to this ongoing corruption anylonger.”Wilson also said that the DA will continue

to monitor the situation very carefully andvisiting pay points on a regular basis toensure that this untenable situation comesto an end.

The Mogalakwena Residents Association(MRA) condemned efforts by a group ofyoung people who allegedly attempted todisrupt services at their localmunicipality. The MRA alleged that ANC councillors

implicated in the KPMG report addressedthe group that convened a meeting at theopen field next to the municipal libraryrecently. The association alleged that the ANC

Waterberg Regional Secretary, TollyMashamaite, recently convened a factionconsisting of 26 ANC councillors who wereexpelled following an ordinary councilmeeting on 26 August. During the meeting, the council approved the decision torequest the MEC for CoGHSTA(Corporative Governance HumanSettlement and Traditional Affairs) MakomaMakhurupetja to terminate the councillors’membership for failing to attend more thanfive council meetings. When that failed, thecouncil advised Municipal Manager WillyKekana to proceed with the matter legally, compelling the MEC to terminate theirmembership, which resulted in bi-electionsin 16 affected wards.“This group has a capacity to ignore the

community and disrupt services. Thesecouncillors have started disrupting the IDPforums, council meetings and communityreport back meetings since they wereremoved as EXCO members and themayor respectively in April. The communityhas had enough of intimidation from thisdisgruntled group which has no intention toserve the people but themselves.“The people are not interested in the petty

Makomene also said that thereservoir needs to increase for theseareas to have access to clean water, and said that among other problems, old architecture is causing problems. The municipality’s main water supply

borehole in Roedtan is dry and themunicipality has made water tanksavailable within the affected areas forthose who can carry buckets. Watertrucks keep the tanks filled daily.“Furthermore, we are taking water to

There was a message going aroundon the Internet this week, afternews of Oscar Pistorius’ sentencebroke.Make a list of all the things

Pistorius will never be able to doagain. Now make a list of all the things

Reeva will never be able to doagain.Compare.It is a really valid point. Pistorius

might never compete at theOlympics again. He might nevercompete internationally in anyathletic field again.Reeva Steenkamp will never be

able to do anything, ever again. She won’t be able to feel the sun, orhave children, or just have a drink. She’ll never buy a cute pair ofshoes or talk on her cellphoneagain. For her, the long trudge along the

mortal coil has come to an end.So when people say, in all

innocence, that Oscar’s sentenceis enough, and that people shouldnow try to forget what hashappened, it strikes one as odd. It’s very much the same thing as

when the media complained that thelives and ‘promising careers’ of apair of young American rapists hadbeen “ruined” by their conviction.Sure, their lives are ruined. Know

what’s an easy way not to getkicked out of university? Don’t rapeunderage girls! It’s that simple.Want to stay out of jail and

continue to be a world-famousathlete and an inspiration tothousands? Then don’t kill yourgirlfriend. It really is that simple. This case hits home for every

woman who has ever had to fear forher life because of her intimatepartner — which, studies say, isabout 40% of all women in SouthAfrica. The court had a chance to set a

precedent, to show South Africaand the world that the killing ofwomen will not be tolerated, that theharshest penalties will be imposed.Perhaps next time a woman is killedby her famous lover the courts willtake the opportunity to take a stand. We can but hope.

In 1818 the British poet PercyBysshe Shelley (the lover and laterhusband of Mary Shelley, theauthor of Frankenstein) wrote apoem about the temporary natureof glory. In what is perhaps one ofthe best examples of irony inhistory, the poem is still taught inschools and universities 198 yearslater.

I met a traveller from an antiqueland

Who said: “Two vast and trunklesslegs of stone

Stand in the desert. Near them, onthe sand,

Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,

And wrinkled lip, and sneer of coldcommand,

Tell that its sculptor well thosepassions read

Which yet survive, stamped onthese lifeless things,

The hand that mocked them andthe heart that fed:

And on the pedestal these wordsappear:

‘My name is Ozymandias, king ofkings:

Look on my works, ye Mighty, anddespair!’

Nothing beside remains. Round thedecay

Of that colossal wreck, boundlessand bare

The lone and level sands stretchfar away. The poem was inspired by the

announcement that a fragment ofan ancient statue of the EgyptianPharaoh Ramesses II had beenfound and would be brought toLondon. Ramesses, also known asRamesses the Great, wasregarded as the greatest and mostcelebrated of the EgyptianPharaohs. He was appointedprince-regent at age fourteen andwas still a teen when he took thethrone. He went on to reign for sixty-six

years, more or less — which, considering that the average life-span in ancient Egypt was roughlyforty years, was an enormousaccomplishment. The land of Egypt is littered with

temples built by him, and statuesof him. His name is still known, albeit only to archaeologists andthose with an interest in the historyof Egypt and so, according to thebelief of the ancient Egyptians thata man is not dead as long as hisname is still spoken, Ramesses II,or Ozymandias as he was calledby the Greeks, is in actual fact, immortal. The fact that some of his works

have fallen into decay (it isbelieved that the great statue thatinspired Shelley’s poem was pulleddown and broken during a laterdynastic war) is irrelevant, because we remember him.Is there anyone alive now whose

name will still be spoken in fourthousand years, or have webecome so temporary that ahundred years is too much to ask?

This child was seen dancing to music during a store promotion inMookgophong. Photo: Lizzy Bapela
