T h e W r i t e r s ’ B e a t“Growing Old in the High Country – Or Not” Essay by Annie Dawid

An artist friend who summered up here for a decade writes that she is putting her place on the market, because, this year, she found she could no longer take the altitude. Perhaps she is in her late 60s or early 70s.

“This has been a very painful decision and am filled with grief and loss at the closing of this chapter in my life. Have really loved being up there making art and enjoying the natural world. I have no choice since my health has to come first…Am grateful I had all those years up there in my tuff shed. Getting older is hell with all the physical changes and losses.”

My former beloved has departed, too, after a much shorter length of time, saying the place “took my breath away, literally,” and breathless is not a way to live.

For my 13-year-old son and me, 9,100 feet above the Wet Mountain Valley – nearly twice as high as the Mile-High city, from which my ex hailed – is just right. We prefer playing tennis at this altitude, and when we visit family on the East Coast in summer, the air there feels thick, too heavy and dense. The ball moves slowly through the humidity, as do we. For Leadville dwellers, our altitude is nothing! We are “down the mountain” from those hardy dwellers at 10,000 feet, just as, for us in Westcliffe, “down the hill” is Pueblo or Canon City, or the Springs -- each a few thousand feet

lower and entirely different in weather and ecosystem.

Already, in nine years, I’ve lost several friends to altitude – not only older ones, but a whole family whose newborn couldn’t live in this thin air either.

What does it mean, metaphorically, to become unable to breathe the air in which you live? In a literal sense, it is easy to analyze: one’s lungs won’t function properly. But in a figurative sense, breathlessness is often an idealized state. The dictionary spells out the idiomatic meaning of taking a person’s breath away: to overwhelm someone with beauty or grandeur. The examples are: The magnificent painting took my breath away. Ann looked so beautiful that she took my breath away. Another meaning is “to be extremely surprised.”

All those variations speak to my experience of life here, where autumn already shows itself in the mornings, and the antelopes’ coats grow thick for winter. At night, the Pleiades gather their meteoric selves together and throw themselves across the sky, showering, arc-ing, a splendiferous climax, like the final display of fireworks, before the cold comes.

One has to want this isolation, this beauty that can appear cold and dry to others. Our summers are short, the light green of

spring even shorter-lived. Decades ago, when I lived in San Francisco, a New Yorker friend visited, and he shook his head at my California weather: “It’s the same all year here!” He practically spat it out with scorn. Now, ironically, he lives in mild Los Angeles, and I am back in the land of four seasons – far more stark and delineated than they were on Long Island.

The neighbor who wrote me, who welcomed me to this community of tough individuals living up here on the treeless ridge, many of them women living alone, has made the hard choice I hope never to make, never to have to make. But I recognize I am not immune to the troubles that plague our bodies as we age. It could happen to me.

Our first night here, nine years ago, after the angle of Big Bad Hill proved too steep for my limited mountain driving abilities, especially towing a U-Haul trailer, and I had to get expert help to arrive on the upper road after jackknifing midway, my then preschooler son had a nosebleed. Not just any old nosebleed but one of Biblical proportions. My phone didn’t work. I didn’t yet know anyone. Had I made a terrible mistake, moving us here, out in the middle of proverbial nowhere?

No. No mistake. The bleeding stopped. I have wonderful neighbors who would help in a heartbeat – a New York City minute -- should I have need of them. In

the years since we moved from the Pacific Northwestern mecca of Portland, so many people have asked, “How could you leave there? It’s such a great city!’

How could we leave? Easy. As I write, I look out the window at the Sangres, and the view, like the painting in the example above, or the mythical Ann’s beauty, takes my breath away. Every single day.

Annie Dawid’s third volume of fiction, AND DARKNESS WAS UNDER HIS FEET: STORIES OF A FAMILY, won the Litchfield Review Award for Short Fiction. It is available on amazon.com. Her story: “The Fox Breaks the Code,” won the 2008 Short Short prize on www.literal-latte.com. A former professor of English at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, Annie is raising her son, Isaiah Max, and two dogs, Freddy and Fannie, in her cabin outside of Westcliffe at 9100 feet in the Wet Mountain Valley.

This chile is particularly well-suited to the growing conditions in

Pueblo, CO. You’ll hear or see it referred to as “The Pueblo

Chile” or “The Mira Sol.” It is unique in that it grows upward:

“looking toward the sun” in Spanish. It is delicious with tones

that are distinct from New Mexico chiles because of Pueblo’s

cool nights and fresh Rocky Mountain water via the Arkansas

river. It has a delightful heat: at 2,500 – 5,000 Scoville

units, the Mira Sol ranges in heat between an Anaheim and

a jalapeño.
