Notes from the Principal... Hello Bartlett Families and Friends, The staff and I would like to extend our best wishes for a joyous and peaceful New Year. This new beginning is a wonderful time to review your child’s ac-complishments this far and make new goals. Reflect with your child on areas they have truly excelled in and help them set attainable goals for their learning at school for the rest of the year. We look forward to the many learning op-portunities that this part of the school year will bring! Additionally, to celebrate our staff that helps to provide so many of these wonderful learning opportunities, I am requesting nominations for teacher of the year. If you would like to nominate a Bartlett teacher for this honor, please write or email your nomination along with a few sentences explaining why you think that teacher is “Bartlett’s Teacher of the Year.” Please make sure nominations are submitted by January 15, 2016. Thank you for your time and thought! As always, if you have any questions or concerns please contact us at any time, 248-573-8300. Sincerely, Emily Testani Principal

Contingency Plans
Occasionally, school systems have to send students home early due to weather condi-tions, power outages, boiler failure and so on. Although we try to avoid sending students home early, there have been times in the past and there will, no doubt, be times in the future when this action is nec-essary. Please discuss this possibility with your children, and devise a plan for them to follow. Your plan might in-volve going straight home and calling a parent at work. It might involve going to the neighbor’s home, if the neighbor agrees. It might involve a high school child staying at home with the younger children. Whatever plan is decided upon, make sure your children know it and follow it, for their safety and your peace of mind. Whenever possible, students at the elementary level will not be released unless a contact has been made with a parent, guardian, or other individual listed on their
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day We will celebrate the life of Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. during the month of Janu-
ary. Students in grades K-3 will be read-
ing different books about the life of Dr.
MLK Jr. K-3 students will then discuss
the Habits of Mind that Dr. King used in
his life. Students in 4th and 5th grade will
be viewing a clip on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. They
will then discuss the meaning of Dr. King’s message and
participate in a written reflection connected to this mes-
sage. We look forward to celebrating and honoring Dr.
Martin Luther King Jr. with students!

Book Look: Beautiful Oops by Barney Saltzberg Written by: Amy Forsyth, General Ed. Social Worker & Julie Burdick, Special Ed. So-
cial Worker
Beautiful Oops is a book that not only teaches that it’s okay to make mistakes, but that we should
celebrate mistakes and learn from them. The author does a wonderful job of demonstrating how
common mistakes (or “oops” as he calls them) can be transformed into something beautiful. For example, he turns
a torn piece of paper into the mouth of an alligator! This interactive book is great for teaching about having a
growth mindset. You may have noticed a bulletin board in the hallway by the cafeteria that says “Change your
words, change you mindset”; this bulletin board has a variety of examples of ways to
have a growth mindset! At Bartlett, we are teaching and supporting all students to
have a growth mindset!
Try this at home:
Give your child an “oops” piece of paper (a paper that has a smudge on it or is
ripped, etc). Ask your child to create something out of/on the paper. Pretend like you
don’t see the “oops” on the paper.
When your child is done, have him/her share the creation that he/she made. Ask questions such as:
What did you do to transform the “oops” into your creation?
Did you have to change the way you think about creating to complete this task?
Next, you could have a conversation with the following talking points:
Talk about how the “oops” on their paper can represent mistakes or challenges that they may face at school.
Talk about how the final creation, where they included the “oops”, can represent having a growth mindset;
trying something that was different or hard and continuing a task even if it does not go as planned.
Talk about how great their pictures look and how they turned something that looked like an “oops” into some-
thing amazing!

Cultures of Thinking THINKING MADE VISIBLE THIS MONTH…
Fourth graders used the routine, Tug of War, to examine the book, Tiger Rising. Students first wrote in their thinking journals, then shared their perspective and rea-soning with their classmates. Together they used the information each student presented to build an argu-ment around a question prompted from their reading. Great discussions were had and students did an amazing job of listening and respond-ing to each other!
