Friday, April 20th was a very exciting evening for us. It was an Open House for the Elks Banquet Facility, membership drive and Frozen Drink Night all going on at the same time. I want to thank Gary and Martha Gile for donating the entertainment for the evening. The five piece band “Past the Point” rocked the Lodge from 5- 9pm and was much welcomed by everyone in attendance. The splendid hors d’ouvres prepared and presented by Trustee Chris Bissonette and his volunteers made us proud to show off our banquet facility to the general public! We had many people drop by to see our facility and was surprised to find out that they could use it without becoming a member. However, many were so impressed that they wanted applications to join the Elks. This was promoted by your Officers and could not have been successful without our wonderful volunteers who were there to lend their unselfish helping hands! If you didn’t attend the Pig Roast on May 12th you sure missed out on a great evening of Elkdom. Thank you Chris Bissonette for chairing the event and Randy Lopes for becoming the new “Beanman” (Bill Leavitt...we will never forget your beans). The next day we were right back at it at 5:30am to get ready for our Mother’s Day Brunch. Thanks to Chris Bissonette, Rick “Eggman” Boucher, Mary Blankemeyer, Cookie Manning, Carol Forguites, Don Trombley and Pat Howes for preparing and serving 240 people. I had the honor of attending the Eldoes Installation on May 15th. Congratulations to the new incoming Officers for the coming year. Gary Little, Dave Blankemeyer, Mary Paule Hill, Rick Boucher, Chris Bissonette and Mary Blankemeyer jumped in to serve the Eldoes as thanks for what they do for us. Don’t forget our Flag Day ceremony is June 10th. Please bring family, friends, children and grandchildren to attend. We’ll have great guest speakers and the proper way to fold our American Flag will be demonstrated. We also have a drop off for retired flags. Thank you Eddie Slicker for taking on this project. By now we are back from the State Convention in New Hampshire. I will give details and stories (not all!) in next month’s bulletin. May we all return safe so we can ride the train into next month’s activities. And speaking of our train, Alice Charbonneau drew a wonderful sketch of a train for us (see right). Thanks Alice! BLOOD DRIVE Congratulations to our Elks members and local citizens for another successful Blood Drive on April 27th! A total of 36 produc-tive units of blood were collected from 43 individuals. That easily surpassed our goal of 25 units, helping Vermont reach it’s blood donation goal for the month of April. This has almost become commonplace at our Lodge, and that’s a very good thing to say the least! This spring may be a very bright one for countless hospital patients who will benefit from all of our efforts in the weeks ahead. Thank you Dave Ploesser for all you do (posters, etc.) and to all of our other volunteers: Pat Francis, Bea Sylvia, Barb Coon Ann Irish and Doris Pepin. Lady Eldoes...thank you so very much for your kindness and help running things smoothly. Thanks to Anne Cross for filling in for us at 5pm. The next Elks Blood Drive will be Friday, June 15th.

With sincerest appreciation, Wilfred “Dizzy” Desilets, Chairperson, PER

GOODBYE TO A FRIEND

I have had an extremely difficult time writing a Eulogy for my friend Frank Moisan, because I hold him in such high regard that I fear my words will fall short. How can I paint an accurate portrait of this very special man? A physical description? He was six feet three inches, flowing snow white hair, piercing blue eyes, and a crooked smile. That doesn’t do justice to the inner man. Frank had a heart that was open to everyone. What-ever people asked of him, Frank was happy to do it...never asking for anything in return. NEVER! Frank was an avid, unwavering Red Sox fan. This says a lot about his character. He was resolute in his beliefs. We know he was loyal, and if he liked you he would never abandon you, regardless of your shortcomings or fail-ures. You could disappoint him and he wouldn’t turn his back on you. In a social environment where gossip thrives, Frank never spoke ill of anyone. He always took the higher road. But we all know how Frank lived his life. He loved his wife, his family, his country, his associations, his sports and his golf. The real measure of Frank’s character is in how he faced his death.

His courage never flagged. He never once was heard to say “why me?” No self pity for Frank. He did not hide from the cancer or his friends. He continued to golf until he could no longer lift his clubs. He continued his daily routines helping at the Lodge until he no longer had the strength to drive his car. He never wasted a pre-cious moment feeling sorry for himself, living every day to it’s fullest. Dylan Thomas wrote “Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.” I don’t know if Frank every read this poem, but he em-bodied it’s sentiment. This disease stole Frank’s vitality, his body and ulti-mately his life...but it could not take his dignity. Frank lived and died with honor, courage and pride. For this he deserves our respect, admiration and love.

Congratulations my friend. You earned them all. John Plunkett - May 2, 2007

SPECIAL BIRTHDAY

PARTY! If your birthday is in June, come celebrate

with your fellow members on June

30th outside on the patio. And be sure to bring a dish to share!

BITS & PIECES

• As kitchen Trustee Chris B hones his culinary skills I think he is writing a new cook-book. It is entitled “1001 Uses for Bottled Italian Dressing.”

• My therapist says if I spend less time in the bars, I may not be so tense. Where does she come up with this stuff? Doesn’t she know we drink to relax?

• The following long time employees are graduating from college this year: Emily “Yogi” Miles (UVM), Jamie Brigante (St. Michael’s), Kevin Emden (OSU), Caitlin Burke (Elon), and Andrew John Plunkett (Emerson College). Congratulations to them all!

• Carole Sweeney reports that she is now sharing living quarters with Micki. Husband Bob is apparently working overtime. Can you imagine trying to keep two women happy?

• Janet Benway was traveling with her husband Benny when she went to the counter to pay. The cashier offered her the senior discount. Ouch!

• My lovely wife Kerry hates to be called “the” wife. I told her I didn’t see “the” problem. Now I’m sleeping on “the” sofa!

• Congratulations to Ken & Sarah Vachereau. They are the proud parents of a new baby girl, Quinn Elizabeth. Mother and daughter are doing fine. Dad is still a bit shaky.

• We went to Boston for Andrew’s graduation and stayed at the Radisson. They have new Sleep Number beds. Jo was so enamored with her bed (her sleep number is 35, as she told every cabbie in Boston) when we returned to Burlington, she went right out and bought one. There goes more of my inheritance!

• Sue Schmitt’s nephew Jake (a busboy) was playing baseball and broke his leg. It re-quired a shaft be inserted into his femur. We wish him a speedy recovery.

• The conventioneers have returned from the State Convention in N.H. They told me be-fore they left that what happens at the convention stays at the convention. After 10 min-utes they were naming names, and telling tales. So much for discretion. Right “Rainman” Benny?

OPEN HOUSE SUCCESS!

On Friday, April 20th we opened our Lodge to the general public so they could see what a beauti-ful banquet facility we have to offer for weddings, birthday parties, anniversaries and business events. It was a huge success with many visitors during the hours it was open. Gary and Martha Gile donated the 5-piece band “Past the Point” for entertainment and Chris Bissonette and his volunteers put to-gether an amazing selection of hors d’ouvres. Even our Officers got in the act (as you can see by the photo). Thanks to everyone for your help!

Special thanks to Martha & Gary Gile for the band! The BPOE #916 Rockettes!

Saturday, May 12th, was the grand opening and dedication of Schifilliti Park, the New North End’s baseball park. The Elks Lodge participated by bringing in their Drug Awareness Trailer. Volunteers Mary Paule Hill and Mary Sweeney distributed drug awareness literature, along with coloring books, and book-marks. Approximately 600 people were on hand for this event, including Elroy the Elk (aka ER Diane Hazen) who handed out frisbees and gave ‘high fives’ and got to meet her rival, Champ, who was also in attendance. Thanks to all the volunteers for their twenty plus hours of service, including Dave Blankemeyer (good sport that he is), Gary Little for picking up the trailer, and Wayne LaBonte for his wonderful photography.

I CAN’T BELIEVE WE ATE THE WHOOOOOOOLE THING!

Thank you to all who attended the Pig Roast on Saturday, May 12th. The meal was awesome, the music was great and everyone had a super time. We ended up with over 200 people enjoying pork, beans, corn and coleslaw.

We couldn’t have done it without all our great volunteers (I am sorry but there are too many to name but you know who you are). It’s what makes all of our events go smoothly and keeps the Lodge running.

A special thanks to “Brutus the Pig” for attending. He was the hit of the party...in fact, he was anything but “boaring!” Look for our next Pig Roast in September. Chris Bissonette, Chairman

WHY THE AMERICAN FLAG IS FOLDED 13 TIMES?

Have you ever wondered why the flag of the United States is folded 13 times when its lowered or when it is folded and handed to the widow at the burial of a veteran? Here is the meaning of each of these folds: The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life. The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life. The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world. The fourth fold represents our weaker nature, for as American citi-zens trusting in God, it is to Him we turn in times of peace as well as in times of war for His divine guidance The fifth fold is a tribute to our country, for in the words of Stephen Decatur, Our Country, in dealing with other countries may she always be right; but it is still our country “right or wrong”. The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible with Liberty and Justice for all. The seventh fold is tribute to our Armed Forces. For it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and her flag against all her enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic. The eighth is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor the mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day. The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded. The tenth fold is a tribute to the Father, for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since they were first born. The eleventh fold, in the eyes of a Hebrew citizen represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glori-fies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The twelfth fold, in the eyes of a Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, re-minding us of our nations motto, “In God We Trust”. After the flag is completely folded and tucked in, it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the sailors and marines who served under Captain John Paul Jones, who were followed by their comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today. The next time you see a flag ceremony honoring someone that has served our country, either in the Armed Forces or in our civilian ser-vices such as the Police Force or Fire Department, keep in mind all the important reasons behind each and every movement. They have paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us by honoring our flag and our Country.

ELDOES UPDATE

“Be the Best of Whoever You Are!”

The Eldoes installation dinner was held

on May 15th with approximately seventy in attendance. Once again, John Plunkett provided us with an excel-lent meal and our team of waitresses and waiters came from the officer ranks of Elks Lodge No. 916. Dave (and Mary) Blanke-meyer, Mary Paule Hill, Rick Boucher and Gary Little did a Great job! Thank you. A special thank you to Exalter Ruler, Diane Hazen, for being our special guest.

Ann Relyea and Liz Drew were presented engraved gavel plaques in recognition of their service as past presidents of our organization. Virginia Giroux and Jane Williams became our newest Life Members. Congratulations to all.

It is my pleasure to introduce and congratulate the new slate of officers for 2007 – 2008: President Linda DeLaricheliere 1st Vice-President Pat Francis 2nd Vice-President Debby Stapleton Treasurer Pat Clayton Financial Secretary Nancy Stone Recording Secretary Elaine Neary Corresponding Secretary Ruth Cook Chaplain Beth Dusablon Sergeant-at-Arms Mary McMaster Members-at-Large: Liz Drew, Marion Howard , Theda Hurtubise

On May 6th, another successful Partners in Adventure outing was held with a luau theme. These events are growing and this one surpassed previous events for attendance. Activities, music and meals ran smoothly thanks to the efforts of chairperson Debby Stapleton and her very capable helpers, namely: Pat Francis, Beth Dusablon, Bev Guest, Virginia Merchant, Virginia Giroux, Bea Sylvia, Ellen Zak, Jean Moody and Paula Parker.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the Mr. Dependables: Gary Francis, Scott Stapleton and Fred Dusablon for all of their hard work, setting up, taking down and handling all of the kitchen (cooking) chores. The feedback we receive from the directors of Partners in Adventure is positive and very rewarding to those who participate in these events. It sure makes it us aware of how lucky we are. Thank you.
