"The Lord told me to say this Chaplet for nine days before the Feast of Mercy. It is to begin on Good Friday." "By this novena, I will grant every possible grace to souls" (Entry 796). Jesus is commanding me to make a

Novena before the Feast of Mercy, and today I am to begin it for the conversion of the whole world and for the

recognition of The Divine Mercy...so that every soul will praise My goodness. I desire trust from My creatures. Encourage souls to place great trust in My fathomless mercy. Let the weak, sinful soul have no fear to approaching Me, for even if it had more sins than there are grains of sand in the world, all would be drowned in the immeasurable depths of My mercy." (Entry 1059). (The bold words are the words of our Lord to St. Faustina.) Our Lord gave St. Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena. It is greatly recommended that the Novena intentions and prayers be said together with the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The Novena starts on Good Friday, March 30th and ends April 7th, the day before Divine Mercy Sunday. Flyers on how to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and copies of the Novena can be found at each entrance of the church. EASTER THANKS: We had wonderful celebrations of the chief mysteries of our faith all through Holy Week and again on Easter Sunday. I am sure that we had 1000 people in church at our three Easter Masses. Even our Easter Vigil was very full, as was the 11:00 Mass. The 8:30 Mass on Easter morning was as packed as it could be. Thanks to all our liturgical ministers (servers, readers, Holy Communion distributors (both those who distribute at Mass, and those who take Holy Communion to shut-ins), ushers, and greeters. By the way, did you know that we have about 300 people in these ministries? That’s almost 20% of the parish! I also wish to thank the people who cleaned, decorated and made the church sparkle. When we are celebrating something important, it always looks like we’re celebrating something important! I wish to thank the money counters for being faithful to their necessary task. It’s also important to thank the RCIA team, who helped welcome Alex Barnhart, Steve Diller, Amber Phalen and her three children into the Church. Every Thursday, with breaks only for holidays, we studied from a book based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, prayed together, listened to the life of one of the saints, and hopefully formed some life-long friendships. DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY: Today is the Sunday with lots of names. It’s the Octave (8th day of) Easter, it’s Low Sunday (because it’s so much less solemn than last Sunday), and it’s even Quasimodo Sunday (“Quasimodo” being the first word of the Latin entrance chant in earlier years,) By the way, did you know that the Hunchback of Notre Dame was named Quasimodo because this is the Sunday when the priests of Notre Dame in Paris found the abandoned child with multiple disabilities on their doorstep, who grew up to be the cathedral bell-ringer? At St. Charles in Toledo, we had four tower bells that were controlled with electric switches in the sacristy. The altar servers loved to ring the bells before Mass. They would say to me, “Father, can I be Quasimodo today?” Now this Sunday has a much more important name: Divine Mercy Sunday. Jesus appeared to Saint Faustina Kowalska, a Polish nun in 1937-38, to reveal His mercy in a world dominated by Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini and their second-class imitators. He revealed the Divine Mercy Chaplet, and asked that this Sunday be kept as Divine Mercy Sunday, because today’s Gospel speaks to us of God’s mercy which flows from the Risen Lord onto all us sinners. Many (perhaps most) parishes have some sort of special celebration of Divine Mercy today, usually at 3 p.m., the hour of Jesus’ death. That is what we will do here at St. Anthony at 3 p.m. today (Sunday). Our celebration will consist of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, Vespers of the Second Sunday of Easter, and Benediction.
