The Exalted Ruler’s Message

As the nights get cooler we realize that summer is coming to an end. As always the CVF is a big fund raiser for the Elks. I would like to thank all the volunteers who spent many hours at the fair. Cleaning and preparing the building for the opening day, as well as the 100+ volunteers it takes to operate the booth for the 10 days that the fair is open. As we all know, we had a very wet summer. Silver Towers had a very good start this year. But Mother Nature did not let the campers finish the whole season.

The camp was evacuated on Wednesday August 6th do to heavy rain and damage to the roads in the area. The campers and staff left the camp with pretty much the clothes on their backs. The campers were picked up by their families in Middlebury. The staff was able to return to camp on Thursday to pack the personal belongings of the campers. We had 7 campers from the Burlington area at camp. I would like to thank Rick and Brenda Boucher for making the long, bumpy trip to Silver Towers to pick up the campers equipment and bring it to the lodge, so the families and campers could retrieve their belongings safely.

Our lodge’s Soccer Shoot is September 28th at Leddy Park. Volunteers are needed. Please contact Randy Lopes if you can help.

Stunt night is coming up fast. Please let Mary Paule Hill or myself know about any ideas for a skit for that night.

Veterans Message

Several years ago we started publishing statistics which reflect the generosity of members and their spouses who work so hard to keep our pledge to the vet-erans of our Armed Forces. It is with a great deal of pride that the Elks National Veterans Service Commission lists the statistics for the 2007-2008 fraternal year compiled by the Office of the Grand Secretary

•Participants in Programs: 1,158,402 •Elks Who Worked 143,750 •Helpers 92,460 •Combined Total 236,210 •Hours Donated: •Elks 725,251 •Helpers 340,469 •Total Combined Hours 1,065,747 •Cash Value of Donated Hours* $20,686,149.00 •Miles Traveled: Elks 3,135,079 •Helpers 1,439,398 •Total Combined Miles 4,574,477 •Cash Value of Miles traveled** $2,332,983.00 •Contributions: •Cash $3,507,121.00 •Non-Cash 4,838,802.00 •Hours Worked 20,686,149.00 •Miles Traveled 2,332,983.00 •Total Contributions $31,365,055.00 *The Federal Government has determined that the

cost of work done by charitable organizations like the Elks would average out to $19.41 per hour if performed by social care and government agencies. **Mileage com-puted at $.51 per mile.

These statistics don’t tell the complete story. A dollar value cannot be attached to the care and love our volun-teers put into their work with those who served America in times of peril. We thank our wonderful volunteers as they continue Serving Our Nation’s Veterans.

BITS & PIECES

• I am pretty sure that all airline tickets have dates printed on them. Of course, that information is of little value if you don’t use it. Our very own Ed Sliker discovered this on a recent vacation in Alaska. When he went to the airport to catch the return flight to Vermont, he learned he was twenty four hours late! That’s right. His plane left on Wednesday, he thought it was a Thursday flight. Next flight out? The following Sunday. Busy airport. Men shouldn’t be allowed to travel alone.

• Here are a few other dates Ed is apt to forget: his wedding anni-versary, his wife’s birthday, kid’s birthdays, doctor’s appoint-ments. Some dates he is sure to remember: the first day of hunt-ing season, the first time he fired his gun, and finally, his golf outings.

• Tom and Mary Tessier also took a trip last month. They were going to Florida for their daughter’s wedding. Their flight left Burlington early on Sunday morning and arrived in Florida on Tuesday! I think Fred Flintstone was piloting that flight for Pterodactyl Airlines. Anything to save a buck, huh Tom?

• Bar Bingo is a big success. Who would’ve thunk it? I thought everyone over 50 was in bed by 7:00 on Saturdays.

• Speaking of success stories, Karaoke is always a good time and a packed house. And here’s a surprise; George “blame, blame, blame” Langlois does a darn fine rendition of “Hey There Little Red Riding Hood”. What next? Ed Sliker’s version of “Do You Remember”!

• Shakespeare said something like a rose by any other name will still smell as sweet, but a name, once given, is an integral part of our identity. Persons or things that have no name, or are ashamed of their name, have no real being to speak of. That is why anony-mous letters will never bear serious consideration, and will al-ways go directly into the trash, where they belong.

ELDOES UPDATE

“Be the Best of Whoever You Are!”

The fair is here – could it be that summer is over? I for one am wishing to an extended Indian summer with minimal rain – ENOUGH ALREADY!!!!!

The group had a wonderful time on our Lake George venture with

50 participants. Even Nancy and Bob were able to join us. We are trying to plan for a fall foliage trip in September or early October, more information to follow.

Please keep in mind our members and their families, some of who

are having a very rough year. Prayers are very important at this time. The date for our annual bazaar will be November 2, and with the

date change we are in need of crafters. If you know a crafter who would like to participate, please have them call Mary McMaster at 863-2424 for more information. This year, we will be bringing back the white elephant table. If you would like to donate reusable items, please call Debby Stapleton at 862-4510. Jewelry is always welcome – you can call any Eldoe and they will be glad to pick it up. This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and with everyone’s sup-port, we hope to surpass last years effort.

September Birthdays:

Doris Curtis, Beth Dusablon, Virginia Giroux, Florence Mannino, Sally Vachereau

A belated happy birthday to Sandra Enos I am catching up – seriously!!!!!

Happy Birthday to all!

If you come to a steak night during the month of your birthday,
