The Exalted Ruler’s Message

Greetings, my Elks Brothers & Sisters;

Well, finally, we are seeing a little sun, but still

chilly in the morning. That has not stopped our

Lodge from heating up with activities. Mother’s

Day saw a nice attendance and some wonderful

members helping to make the brunch a success.

Many thanks to each and every one of them. (see report on page 5)

Our Lodge congratulations goes out to Wes and

Sally Blair for their 50th wedding anniversary and

the large attendance that celebrated the event.

They have both given a lot to the Lodge, and they

are in our best wishes for the next 50 years.

The Wednesday game night with cornhole games and pool playing has added some

activity on what was a slow night. Unfortunately, for the financial health of the Lodge,

the cornhole games have to be set aside if there is a large event that needs the use of the

hall. With the weather conditions improving, except for a rainy evening, the cornhole

games can be played at the back of the parking lot, which also adds the advantage of tossing a higher arc bag. We appreciate that the members involved can understand the

reasons for this policy.

We are in need of kitchen help for Tuesday and Friday nights, as well as when there

is a large event. If you have someone in the family, a child or grandchild, niece or

nephew, etc., please have them contact Secretary, Moe Decelles, to earn some cash.

June 9th is our Flag Day celebration. It is a very moving and inspiring event that all

members should attend. If you have not previously attended a Flag Day Ceremony,

make this the first one you do. It is the cornerstone of the Elks Americanism spirit. PER

Mary Paule Goulet, does a fabulous job with the arrangements and presentation. Within

this bulletin is detailed information on page 2.

There have been many dedicated members lending a helping hand with the different needs of the Lodge. They are all appreciated and seen as vital to the Lodge’s survival.

One or two more for one or two functions or events would help to deduce the load that

the small percentage contribute with their labor. Approach me or one of the other

officers to say you can be called upon. That will help the moral of those that you see

helping and you will experience a pride in yourself for being a contributing member.

One couple that have been steady with their pitching in for Tuesday’s and Friday’s, as

well as other functions for several years are named as the Volunteer of the Month on the

back page. From time to time, they also step up in emergency situations. We so

appreciate their dedication to our Lodge and the friendship they quietly move about with.

Bless them both.

Flag Day Ceremony

(Commemorating the birth of the American Flag)

Sunday, June 9th, 1:00 PM

The Annual Flag Day Ceremony is Sunday, June 9th at 1pm. Please mark that date on your calendar and plan to be here.

In 1908, the Elks approved an official Flag Day ceremony, unfurling a tradition that would occur annually, the first Sunday in June.

After a posting of colors by the Vermont Air National Guard, we will turn back the pages of history and explain the origins and evolu-

tion of the American flag.

It all began in 1775 with a simple white flag bearing a green pine tree, which was placed on colonial sea vessels, and another flag with

13 red and white stripes and the red cross of St. George. On June 14, 1777, the Continental Congress declared a new flag with 13

stripes and 13 stars designed by Betsy Ross. By 1795, two additional stars were added to represent Vermont and Kentucky. That 15-

star flag helped inspire Francis Scott Key to write the "Star Spangled Banner." In 1818, Congress declared the flag officially would

have 13 stripes and a star to represent each state. The current 50-star flag was created with the admission of Alaska and Hawaii to the

union in 1959. Nine different flags will be displayed in the ceremony which includes a POW Flag.

Additionally, Dr. John Murray, Scholarship Chairperson, we will again be awarding scholarships to worthy students.

If you have old flags that you would like to dispose of, please bring them to the lodge. There is a receptacle for them in the area before

you enter the Member bar. The lodge will dispose of all flags properly.

Let your friends know this event is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. A luncheon will follow the ceremony. Mary Paule Goulet, PER Flag Day Chairperson

Scholarship Contests

2018 - 2019 Academic Year

Judging has been completed on the 916 Scholarship Award. We have four winners, each of whom will receive $1,000.00 and one of

those four will receive an additional $500.00 for high scholastic achievement.

The names of the winners will be announced at the Flag Day Ceremony and will be published in the July Bulletin. The Scholarship

committee will resume its work in September beginning with the Elks National Foundation Most Valuable Student contest, the Elks

National Legacy Contest, and the Roger Sheridan Award given by the Vermont State Elks Association. Looking forward to seeing

everyone on Sunday, June 9th, 1 p.m.

Mother’s Day Brunch Report

The Mother’s Day Brunch committee of Anne Tewksbury-Frye, Dan Frye, Irene Longe, and Rosaire Longe are very happy to report

the Brunch was declared a success by everyone that attended. All were complimentary about the food, Chef Paul, the volunteers, and the

carnation given to each mother. One hundred eighteen

were served with three seating times that went smoothly.

Member volunteers were on the ball and did a great job

of doing a quick turnover for the seating. They were:

Doc and Suzanne Murray, Skip and Mary Barton, Dennis

Goyette, Glenn Enos, David Ely II, Dick Young, and Barry Deliduka. Many, many thanks to all of them. The tips that

were left for the volunteers were all donated by them to the

Silver Towers Walk-a-Thon in the amount of $119. A

special thanks to Gary Russ for taking a couple hours the

day before to wash and wipe down all the silverware that

was to be used for the breakfast.

A beautiful touch were the center piece flowers arranged

by Suzanne and Annie that gave some spring color to the

tables.

One hundred eighteen paying customers were served for

a gross income of some $2,000 to celebrate a great day. Thank you to all that participated. (See picture of the

Sweeney/Lemay family table. Matriarch, Mary Sweeney at

far end in picture was holding court!

Lodge Spruce Up Day! The start of sprucing-up the flower bed at the entrance, included removing a very sharp thorny bush that hides the beauty of the flowers. Picture is of Irene cutting back the branches so Rosaire could get to the bottom to dig the bush out. It will be replaced by a smaller low bush. The rest of the bed is being cleaned and replanted by Denise Russ, Caren Larose and Chris Bissonette. Thank you Irene, Denise, Chris and Karen, you have this looking beautiful!

Our Exalted Ruler on the air at WVMT Radio!

Our Exalted Ruler, Rosaire Longe, got some air time talking

with Marcus & Kurt on WVMT 620 “Morning Drive” on Mon-

day May 6th.

Rosaire spoke about the Elks, who we are and the good works

that we do. He informed the audience about our programs, in-

cluding Silver Towers, Veterans, Youths, Drug Awareness,

Americanism, and Scholarships.
