The Early Years Wales Welsh Language Oracy Pack PRACTITIONER GUIDANCE The resources view children and parents as active participants in the process of meaning- making and inquiry as they share, investigate, and demonstrate their knowledge of oral Welsh language. • The parent and child involvement in using the pack will be supported by resources that offer a variety of open-ended, opportunistic, real-life experiences, such as exploring fruit, playing a number game, listening to rhymes, telling stories and reading books. • The resources aim to support a progression in both the child’s and adult’s (where Welsh is a second language) Welsh language oracy skills and knowledge. • This includes vocabulary learning, the development of grammatical knowledge, the use of listening skills and the consolidating and deepening of Welsh Language oracy skills. • The pack acknowledges learner differences and aims to support the family to be confident and to enjoy using the Welsh language in their community. Opportunities for a child to talk, listen and use the Welsh language in everyday experiences Recognition of a child’s achievements through the joint attention provided by the parent in the dialogue and play Interaction with others who are more proficient in talking and listening and using the Welsh language (this could be child-led also) Models talking, listening and using Welsh in the family Accessible and flexible in the way that they are written and shared Developed with contributions from stakeholders (children, families, practitioners etc.) Oracy-based and have sound clips or video to share the language used in the resources. Engaging, playful and enjoyable in their approach to Welsh language learning in the home environment Structured and allow for progress with the building of vocabulary through dialogic and interactive Welsh language oracy experiences (e.g. the sharing of the Welsh Language in simple conversations with puppets, stories, rhymes, links to live performances of story and rhyme- times, songs) Linked to other Welsh Language materials from organisations such as Cymraeg i Blant, Mudiad Meithrin, Mentrau Iaith and BookTrust Cymru The resources should use only loose parts that are easily found in most homes The aim of the pack is To support young children’s oral Welsh language development and early literacy skills through parent-led dialogic and interactive oracy experiences (play, conversation, singing, shared book reading etc.) in the home. The pack uses the oracy strand of the ORIM conceptual framework for early literacy learning (Hannon and Nutbrown, 1997). This framework is designed to be facilitative, rather than instructional, in its approach and is therefore ‘less planned, more opportunistic, context dependent and often embedded in real-life tasks’ (Hannon, Nutbrown and Morgan, 2019). The ORIM framework has four key principles that families can provide to support oracy development. In the first story families are invited to make their own puppet or toy out of a sock. The puppet is then used throughout the pack to act as an intermediary in family play and language learning. Each part of the pack contains a book, a video of the book being read, a video of the vocabulary, a video of a game to play and a video of a song. Familes are also invited to record their Welsh language learning journey and to share it, if they would like, on Early Years Wales social media.

Cefnogi datblygaid iaith Gymraeg lafar plant ifanc a sgiliau llythrennedd cynnar trwy brofiadaullafariaeth deialog a rhyngweithiol dan arweiniad rhieni (chwarae, sgwrsio, canu, darllen llyfrau ary cyd ac ati) yn y cartref.

Mae'r pecyn yn defnyddio'r llinyn llafaredd o fframwaith cysyniadol ORIM ar gyfer dysgullythrennedd yn gynnar (Hannon and Nutbrown, 1997). Mae'r fframwaith hyn wedi'i gynllunio i fodyn hwylusol yn hytrach na fod yn cyfanwyddiadol ac felly'n llai cynlluniedig, yn fwy manteisgar, ynddibynnol ar gyd-destun ac yn aml wedi'i ymgorffori mewn tasgau bywyd go iawn (Hannon,Nutbrown and Mogan, 2019) Mae'r fframwaith ORIM efo prif egwyddor lle mae teuluoedd yn galludarpanu cymorth datblygiad llafar. Y prif gymeriad a ddefnyddir yn y pecyn iaith Gymraeg llafar yw Cari y Bwni. Yn ystori cyntaf gwahoddir teuluoedd i greu pyped neu tegan eu hunain allan o hosan.Mae'r pyped wedyn yn cael ei ddefnyddio trwy gydol y pecyn i ymddyn felcyfryngwr mewn chwarae teulu a ddysgu iaith. Mae pob darn o'r pecyn yn cynnwysllyfr, fideo o'r llyfr yn cael ei ddarllen, fideo o'r geirfa, fideo o'r gem i chwarae afideo o gan. Gwahoddir teuluoedd hefyd i recordio eu taith o ddysgu iaith Gymraega'i rhannu, os hoffent, ar gyfryngau cymdeithasol Blynyddoed Cynnar Cymru.
