Annual School Cross Country Carnival Our school conducted the annual cross country on Monday 7th May 2018, in what can only be described as perfect weather conditions. Thank you to all the parents and visitors who attended, supporting our students. Once all the points were tallied, Blamey House was the eventual winner of the carnival. Our congratulations go to Blamey House. Congratulations also to all the students who participated in the event. A zone squad has been selected and they will compete at the Liverpool Zone PSSA carnival, to be held at South Park (Chipping Norton) on Tuesday 29th May 2018. Any student unable to take their place will need to inform the school, so that a replacement runner can be organised. A special thank you to Mrs Shiels and Mrs Bartram and all the staff who assisted with the organisation of our carnival. Ribbons will be presented for all students finishing in the first three places, at upcoming assemblies. NSW PSSA State Tennis Championships

Congratulations to Lily P in 5 Royal who recently competed in the NSW PSSA State Tennis Championships. Lily played in both singles and doubles matches. She thoroughly enjoyed the experience and increased her knowledge and skill in the game she loves. Well done Lily! Variation to Term 4 SDD The NSW Department of Education allows schools to make a variation to Term 4 Staff Development Days. Our teaching staff are in favour of a variation to the second Term 4 SDD, Friday 21 Dec. This will mean we will be holding two, three-hour twilight sessions of professional learning during Term 2 and 3. The last day of the year for students will be Wednesday 19 Dec and the last day for staff will be Thursday 20 Dec. Open Day-Kindergarten 2019 Our school will host an information and orientation ‘Open Day’ for parents of pre-school students, on Thursday 24 May, who intend enrolling their children at our school in 2018. We look forward to welcoming new families to our school and show casing the wonderful programs we offer at Wattle Grove PS. My thanks to Miss Premier for all her hard work organising the day and special thanks to staff members who are assisting.

Year 5 – Sienna, Lukas, Maeve, Kodie, Caitlyn, Sasha, Lani, Zach, Brock, Lily, Zac, Mikaylah, Berlin, Ella, Gabriella, Joshua, Esme, Sullivan, Kayla, Hayley Year 6 – Molly, Abdul, Ananta, Andrew, Ava, Tara, Brendan, Capri, Annika, Jacob, Brayden, Bronte, Ryan, Felicia, Charlie, Samuel Year 1 Excursion Experience – Sydney Aquarium Last Tuesday, the pictures, videos and visions of sea animals became a captivating reality for our year one students. “Are we there yet?” “How long to go?” These were the two questions on repeat during our suspenseful bus ride. Year one were beyond excited as they looked out the windows, trying to find signs that we were almost there. We saw the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the distance and then there it was, Sea Life Sydney Aquarium! We had our recess and then it was time to explore!

“There’s Dory!” We saw some amazing fish in all shapes, sizes and colours. Year one spotted the jellyfish from a far as the lit up like floating glow sticks. “I can see it, I can see it!” The excitement continued as the Dugongs stuck their heads out of the water.

We got the chance to listen to Dugong noises and strike a pose with a Dugong statue. Walking down the ramps from Dugong Island we spotted some giant sea turtles. They couldn’t talk like the ones in Finding Nemo but they certainly captured our attention as they swam above our heads.

“It feels funny!” The discovery labs and rock pools were a great

hands on experience where students got to reveal fossils, touch coral and hold starfish. “It’s a bull shark!” Next we bravely wandered through the Shark Valley tunnels. Eyes widened, mouths opened and fingers pointed as huge sharks and stingrays surrounded us. It’s one thing to be told sharks and stingrays are big, it’s another to experience it! Students were pointing out features they had learnt in class such as the gills which help sharks breath. “Do we actually get to go on a real boat?!” By far one of the most exciting parts of the excursion was our final stop at the Penguin Expedition. We lined up patiently and took turns to experience a boat ride to see penguins in their natural habitat. The temperature dropped enormously as we entered the enclosure and suddenly we were mesmerised by these amazing animals. The penguins were swimming in the water, sliding down icy hills and waddling around on their webbed feet. We said our final goodbyes to the sea animals and it was time to head home. The bus ride wasn’t so long on the way back as many enjoyed a relaxing nap after an eventful day.

Thank you to all of the teachers and parent helpers for making the day possible. Year one should be very proud of their behaviour and the

way they represented our school. It was certainly an excursion which all of year one and the teachers will remember and continue to talk about this term as we learn more about under the sea.

Year 2 Excursion Experience – Featherdale Wildlife Park

On Thursday 10th of May, Wattle Grove year 2 students went to Featherdale Wildlife Park for a hands on wildlife experience.

“When will we get there?” “How many more minutes?”

These were the two questions on repeat during the bus ride,

everyone’s excitement grew and grew the closer we got to the park. We looked out of the bus

windows to try and find the Featherdale turn off as everyone was so excited to see all the Australian animals that we had learnt about in class. Finally the busses arrived. We moved into the park, had our recess and then it was time to

explore! 2 Kiwi, 2 Jade and 2 Turquoise were the first group to experience a close encounter with four native Australian animals in the parks ‘Learning Burrow’. We learnt about the diet, habitat, predators and

interesting facts of a koala, tawny frogmouth bird, shingleback lizard and a python. These animals were amazing to pat, some of us were a bit scared at first but the keepers assured us that we were very safe! 2 Emerald and 2 Teal had the chance to first explore the parks animals, there were so many different types all around. We walked excitedly from enclosure to enclosure seeing kangaroos, joeys, penguins, koalas, dingos and many more. A cautious place for everyone was the park’s wildlife cave where we had to look carefully to find Australia’s creepy crawlies such as snakes, spiders and lizards. Both groups swapped over and then had a well-deserved lunch after the many hours of exploring. We had one last look at our favourite animals, stamped our wildlife passport and then went back home on the bus. Thanks you to all of the teachers and parent helpers for making the day possible. Year two should be very proud of their behaviour and the way they represented the school. The excursion has been such an inspiration for our information reports that we are writing this term.
