Principal’s Message Dear Families & Friends, Last week, representa ves from 38 Presenta on schools from across Australia gathered in Melbourne for the fourth na onal confer‐ence of the Nagle Educa on Alliance. It was wonderful gathering of Presenta on people and celebra on of Presenta on educa on. It was no coincidence that our conference began on the anniversary of Nano Nagle’s death, April 26, a prominent date for Presenta‐on people all over the world. The story of Nano’s dying and death and the difficul es for the fledgling congrega on in its early years

are full of significance for us today and offer us a fine example of how we might carry the lantern into the future. We were delighted and privileged to have Bishop Vincent Long celebrate the conference Eucharist . He spoke movingly about the inspira on Nano offers today: In biblical me and throughout history, God demonstrates his power through ordinary and vulnerable people who act with imagina‐

on, courage and vision. Nano Nagle was one such example, too. Confronted with misery, injus ce, poverty and hopelessness of her people, she refused to give in. She challenged the status quo, made a stand against the injus ces of her me and reframed the harsh reality into the vision of hope for many. Today, we religious, educators, leaders and friends from Presenta on schools around Australia gather and give thanks for the great legacy that Nano Nagle and her pioneer sisters le to us. We are inspired and challenged by the way they responded to the cry of their people. We seek to hear the cry of our people in our own me and shine the lantern of light and hope to them. Australia in 2015 is very different to Ireland in the late 1700s. But in truth, beneath the veneer of material well‐being and security, there remain many chal‐lenges that need to be confronted as we seek to build a be er and fairer society as well as a be er and fairer church. We cannot re‐scind from the task of listening, discerning and prophe c reframing if we are faithful to the spirit of Nano Nagle and her pioneer sis‐ters. These are mes of great change and challenge in Presenta on communi es as the role of the Sisters shi s and the central place they once took is now shared with lay people from schools and other ministries. The Sisters are embracing a new phase of the life of their Congrega on and wish to do so in partnership with their Presenta on colleagues. They are once again pioneering a new way forward and expressing a new vision for Presenta on life in which we will all par cipate. The conference opening coincided with news of the terrible earthquake in Nepal. One of our keynote speakers, Tim Costello, was unable to a end because he was on a plane to Nepal to join World Vision workers in responding to the crisis. He s ll found me how‐ever, to send us the paper he had prepared and to call us on Monday morning to wish us well for the conference – a gracious and generous response from someone who was, at that moment, hearing ‘ the ‘cry of our people’ and seeking to ‘shine a lantern of hope to them’. It is such an important message to offer the young. This week, students and staff have responded to the need of the Nepa‐lese people with a fund raising campaign for Caritas Australia’s response in Nepal. There has, as usual been a great deal taking place at school these past two weeks and much s ll to come in Term 2. The Athle cs team is today compe ng in the SCSA Sports and the Year 11 retreat is on Monday. This edi on of the Lantern includes reports on the Year 7 Camp, reflec ons from Anzac Day, a Musical update and an invita on to become a host family for a study tour student in Term 3. Respected Italian Franciscan, Father Gino Conce , wri ng in L’Osservatore Romano in 1977:

In light of the word of God, and thus of faith, life ‐ all human life ‐ is sacred and untouchable. No ma er how heinous the crimes . . . [the criminal] does not lose his fundamental right to life, for it is primordial, inviolable, and inalienable, and thus comes under the power of no one whatsoever.

If this right and its a ributes are so ab‐solute, it is because of the image which, at crea on, God impressed on human na‐ture itself. No force, no violence, no passion can erase or destroy it. By virtue of this divine image, man is a person endowed with dignity and rights.

We pray O Lord that you comfort the families, children, spouses, parents and siblings and all who are affected by these state sanc oned deaths.

We pray for the lawyers and advocates who work for jus ce and who provide companionship to those facing inhumane condi ons. May they not be disheartened by this inhumane decision to destroy life. Give all those who fight injus ce the resolve to con nue in this work and to be strengthened by the coming together of so many people from Australia and around the globe, who are suppor ng their efforts as protectors of the fundamental human right to life.

We pray for all those who have been affected by drug addic on; addicts, families, communi es; through death, or whose lives have been terribly damaged as a consequence of addic on.

We pray that people seduced by the lure of drug trafficking will be reminded of the deadly and destruc ve results for those who suffer as a result of this trade.

Winter Uniform—Term 2 (Tights) The uniform policy of PCW Melbourne addresses the total appearance of the student travelling to, from and whilst at school. The uniform is seen as an external statement of the quality educa on offered at the College. In effect, it presents to the public an image, which is in line with the College ethos. The uniform is a means of developing unity and pride with‐in our community. It is the expecta on that all students comply with this policy in all its requirements.

Students will no longer be able to wear socks with their winter uniform. Unfortunately some girls were constantly rolling up their skirt, which does not adhere to our College uniform policy. Due to this it has been decided that students can wear ghts only, from Term 3, as a part of the winter uniform to maintain the consistent look of the uniform.

ANZAC Day Liturgy

PCW Melbourne remembers and prays for Peace

On Friday 24 April our whole community gathered in the Hall on the eve of ANZAC day for a moving Liturgy, where we remembered the terror and destruc on of all wars and challenging one another to be agents of peace.

The liturgy was reverently lead by all members of Year 8 Green, and included a flag ceremony, a reading from St John’s Gospel, the laying of wreaths and praying for peace. Year 7 Art students had make peace doves as a sign of their desire to build a world of peace, which are hanging in our trees.

Year 9 News

The term started off extremely well! Many of the Year 9s signed up for the Premier’s Ac ve April Challenge and par cipat‐ed in a range of lunch me ac vi es run by staff and students, including 7 Minute Circuit, yoga and \“ballonara‐ma.” (Pictured below) Congratula ons to the many girls who tracked their hours over the month. Special men on must be made of Liv Downes and Jess Monaghan who both clocked 74 hours. Our pastoral focus this term is on homelessness and on April 30, 46 students (and 8 staff) braved the cold and slept in the Hall. The night included a soup kitchen, the Poverty Game, guest speaker, Pete Burns and finished up with the movie ‘The Pursuit of Happyness.’ The students raised $1,600 and this will be presented to a representa ve of St Vinnies at our next whole school assembly. Thank you to the many parents, family and friends who generously supported this important cause. The students have been invited to par cipate in a range of ac vi es including, submi ng designs for our Year 9 Eachtra badges, volunteering at Stonnington Library to help older members of our community use iPads and understand social me‐dia, and to get involved with the upcoming Diversity Fashion Gala run by the City of Stonnington Youth Services. Year 7 Camp: Student Reviews During Camp I conquered my fears, made new friends and had the me of my life! Although I was terrified on High Ropes, somehow I managed to do them. It was great because I got to know everyone. I became even closer to my best friends and met others that I didn't even know un l Camp. I had never been to Phillip Island before and I an cipated cold weather so I packed my warmest jumpers to try to stay cosy and snug. But we really were lucky with the weather, because the sun shone and we had no rain. In fact, when I got into the car to go home, Mum no ced that I had somehow got burnt. Camp was so much fun! On 20th April the Year 7 students of PCW Melbourne arrived at Phillip Island. Over three days, we par cipated in a wide range of exci ng ac vi es, such as Canoeing, Ra Building, Scavenger Hunt, Sports ac vi es, Twin Flying Fox, Ini a ve Team work, Art, Trivia, Giant Swing and many more. We were put into groups and then had to work as a team to successfully complete each ac vity. During our me at Phillip Island we learnt a lot about team work and that if you work as a team, anything can be achieved. Overall I thought this was a really good learning opportunity to get to know everyone be er, and for gaining important life skills. Grace Hude (7 Gold)



Year 12 Excursion—Exercise Research Australia

On the 27th April, our Year 12 PE class travelled to Exercise Research Australia in Thornbury as part of revision for Unit 3, Area of Study 2. In the first half of the session we had a lecture with Dr Melissa Arkinstall, a renowned sports scien st and author of one of the VCE PE textbooks. The tutorial was an opportunity to consolidate the knowledge we had learnt in class, and gave us a deeper understanding of the energy system interplay that occurs during exercise. In the second half of the session we got the opportunity to see first hand a range of elite athlete tests: body composi on, anaerobic capacity, and lactate (LIP) test (undertaken by Sarah, Mia and Siobhan).These were performed in the Na onal Sports Science laboratory under the guidance of an ERA sports scien st. It was worthwhile, since we were able to put all the theory we had learnt in class into prac ce in an accurate manner, effec vely confirming the knowledge we had previ‐ously learnt. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed this s mula ng day.

Musical: ‘High School Musical’ During the second half of Term One audi ons were held for PCW and CBC’s produc on of ‘High School Musical’. Students from both schools came in droves for their chance to make the cast. Students from both schools demonstrated a huge pas‐sion and commitment in their audi ons. Well done to all those who tried out and a big thankyou to their families for their support during this me. Out of 150 student audi ons we are happy to announce the final cast for the show. Due to the huge interest in the produc‐on, we are looking at opportuni es to include students that may have missed out. More details on this will be outlined

March’s Sportswomen of the Month Adele Agius Year 11

Adele has done Taekwondo for 9 years now, she has 3 black belts and also represents Australia. Adele puts in countless hours, training 5‐6 mes a week. Adele entered into a compe on to qualify to go to Korea to which she got in! Although the compe on has not been confirmed yet, she is one of forty other athletes selected to Compete ‐ ten from Adele’s club alone. In 2014, she entered into an intense elimina on compe on to be selected to represent Australia in the Olympics, unfortunately just missing out. Recently, due to her hard work and determina on she went through more selec ons to represent Australia at the 2016 Olympics. Sadly, she missed out again however we have no doubt that third me’s a charm! Adele hopes to one day make it to an Olympic Games and do Australia proud! Good Luck in Korea! ‘A wonderful opportunity for all involved to experience the global connectedness of life beyond the gates of PCW Mel‐bourne’ Last year saw the beginning of a Cultural Study Tour Exchange between the PCW Melbourne Community and a number of overseas high schools. Its success has led the College to introduce three Cultural Study Tours annually throughout the school year. In 2015 we welcome THREE schools, all from JAPAN, all seeking home stay placements with PCW Melbourne families. These groups will be travelling and staying with us in Term 3, dates are below: Group 1: Kawamura (this group visited us in 2014 and are returning to study with us again) Monday 20 July – Monday 3 August 2015 Group 2: Nakamura High School Friday 7 August – Thursday 20 August Group 3: Toyota Kita High School Sunday August 23 – Saturday 31 August All host families will receive weekly payments of $250 per host student. The purpose of the program is to give overseas students an opportunity to experience life in Australia by becoming part of an Australian family, interac ng with PCW Melbourne students, staff and the wider community. It also gives our students an opportunity to learn about other cultures and religions and can open opportuni es of overseas learning and travel. Hospitality and kindness are a universal language and the experience of hos ng overseas students is a wonderful oppor‐tunity for families. The College had over 30 families host students in 2014. Without the generosity and support of our fam‐ilies, this program would not be possible. Throughout the program students will a end school, have EAL (English as an addi onal language) classes and the oppor‐tunity to par cipate in the PCW Melbourne way of life. Excursions are a large part of their me in Melbourne, visi ng places such as the Melbourne Zoo, Eureka Sky Deck, Flinders St, St Kilda Beach and Chapel St.

PHYSIOTHERAPY COMING TO ACU BALLARAT IN 2017 – The B. Physiotherapy will be offered at the Ballarat campus of

the Australian Catholic University in 2017. The ACU School of Physiotherapy was established in 2010 with the launch of the B. Physiotherapy at ACU’s Brisbane campus. BACHELOR 0F SCIENCE/BACHELOR OR MUSIC – At Monash University you can now combine your passion for music with a

solid founda on in the sciences with this new double degree. There is a wonderful synergy between the passion for crea ng music and a love of scien fic knowledge. Choosing between the two can be difficult, so why not consider making the most of your talents and study both music and science in a double degree. Physics, maths and music are related to the art and science of acous cs, however their links are much more extensive. The latest developments in physics, psychology, human biology, materi‐als science, informa on science and sta s cal analysis all give us new answers to ancient ques ons about music – what it is, why we make it, how we make it, why we listen to it and how it is changing.

Research into the possibili es of music is ongoing, crea ng new jobs dedicated to the many effects of music, music percep on and the performance and technical underpinnings of instruments. MELBOURNE UNIVERSITY NEWS – MELBOURNE COURSES MOST POPULAR ‐ The University of Melbourne offered more than 7500 students a place in an undergraduate

course for 2015. The Bachelor of Science remains the largest and most popular undergraduate course in the state, with 2518 students offered a place. The B. Arts (1286) and B. Commerce (1150) also saw growth in offer numbers. The Clearly‐In ATAR for Science was 86.00, for Commerce it was 95.00, for Arts it was 90.05, for Biomedicine it was 98.85 and for Environments it was 85.00.

FINDING OUT MORE ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE DEGREES ‐ The University is holding a series of events where undergradu‐ate degrees will be explored.

LA TROBE UNIVERSITY NEWS – NEXT GEN YOUTH FORUM – brings together Year 10‐12 students to par cipate in hands‐on work‐shops, allowing you to be inspired by like‐minded individuals wan ng to make a difference. Speakers: Chantelle Baxter, co‐founder and CEO if One Girl, an organis on dedicated to giving 1 million girls across Africa access to educa on by 2020. Ahmed Kelly, born in Iraq in 1991 with significant disabili es, he was brought to Australia by Moira Kelly for medical treatment. Through determina on, toughness and skill, he has been able to compete in the London paralympics. Chris Long and Brad Moore, co‐creators of the Moodswing App. It was built in the hope of crea ng a ‘Twi er for Moods’ where people could share their emo onal statuses. The program will also include the team from PROJECT ROCKIT and Thomas King, founder of SayNoToPalmOil.com. The forum will give school leaders the opportunity to be part of inspiring workshops related to social jus ce and leadership. They are: 3/4 English (at least 30 in EAL or 25 in any other English) and at least 20 in one of biology, chemistry, health and human development, any maths, physical educa on, physics or psychology. 2016 OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY PREREQUISITE CLARIFICATION – There has been confusion about the wording of the requirements. They are: Units 3/4 English (at least 30 in EAL or at least 25 in any other English), and at least 25 in one of biology, chemistry, any maths, physical educa on or physics. ELITE ATHLETE BONUS ENTRY SCHEME – La Trobe university offers bonus aggregate points for elite athletes. The Scheme is available to domes c undergraduate applicants: who are classified as an elite athlete, whose spor ng commitments have impacted on their previous studies, and who apply for admission to courses via the Victorian Ter ary Admissions Centre (VTAC). DEAKIN UNIVERSITY AND NAVITAS REBRAND PATHWAY COLLEGE – Deakin university and leading educa on provider

Navitas have announced plans to extend their partnership by renaming the pathway college, the Melbourne Ins tute of Business and Technology (MIBT), to Deakin College. Through MIBT, Navitas has collaborated with Deakin University since 1996, providing pathway courses for both domes c and interna onal students. In that me, more than 14,000 students have successfully progressed to degree programs at Deakin. Deakin College will integrate more closely with the university to enable further growth of interna onal and domes c enrolments across the Deakin campuses in Melbourne and Geelong.
