The I-ShIft Dual Clutch from thenew Volvo FH series is an automatedmanual gearbox with dual clutches,

enabling the truck to lose neither speed norpower during gear changes, offering efficientand smooth progress on the road. This typeof transmission was initially designed forhigh-performance sports cars and is used inthe automobile industry.

Volvo Trucks became the first company inthe world to roll out a dual clutchtransmission in heavy vehicles, recentlyreceiving the European ‘Quality Innovation ofthe Year Award’ for the endeavour.

“I-Shift Dual Clutch represents a new-for-the-industry product innovation with strongimprovements in parameters that influencedrivers and transport companies, as well ascargo owners and society in general,” saidMatti Kaulio, associate professor of IndustrialEconomics at the KTH Royal Institute ofTechnology in Stockholm and a repre-sentative of the Swedish Institute for Quality.

A key feature of the Volvo FH series is thatit has an electric motor attached to thesteering gear. The motor works together withthe hydraulic power steering and is regulatedthousands of times per second through anelectronic control unit.

“At low speeds the electric motor replacesthe driver’s muscle power. Instead, the driver

can relax and steer without any effort orstrain,” noted Gustav Neander, projectmanager for Volvo Dynamic Steering.

At a recent press event held by VolvoTrucks at its manufacturing plant inGothenburg, Sweden, Volvo Trucks CEO ClaesNilsson said that 2014 has proven to be agood year for Volvo Trucks globally, followingon from a record year in 2013, with thecompany selling 116,000 Volvo trucks acrossthe world.

Nilsson told Technical Review that Volvowas continually training its mechanics to stayahead of the game, in all regions including atits operations in the Middle East.

“All automotive products today arebecoming more and more complex in terms

of electronics and advanced technologies, inorder for us to meet our customers’demands. This obviously requires a lot oftraining for our mechanics, so we’respending an enormous amount of time andeffort on training our mechanicseverywhere,” Nilsson stated.

“We have a training centre in Dubai for ourmechanics and for our drivers. That facilityhas to be located locally for that market, ofcourse, and in that wider region you need tohave people travelling in certain hubs –especially in the region’s bigger markets suchas Saudi Arabia and other Middle Easterncountries where there are large populations, and where we offer local training for bothdrivers and mechanics.”

Gothenburg-based Volvo Trucks is the first manufacturer in the world that has been able to adapt a dual clutchsystem for heavy trucks.

W ith oil prices falling 60 percent since June 2014, the UAEhas renewed its focus on the

diversification of its economy, with a viewto reducing its reliance on revenue fromnon-renewable energy sources.

According to a 2013 report by the DubaiChamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI),manufacturing is one of the highestcontributing sectors to the UAE’s non-oilGDP in the last decade, providing roughly 14per cent (2001 to 2012). Manufacturingaccounted for 53 per cent of the UAE’s totalnon-oil exports (merchandise goods) in2012 and 22 per cent of total exports, including oil.

The country is the world’s fourth largestaluminium producer, accounting for morethan 50 per cent of the Gulf’s aluminiumproduction. Global industry experts haveprojected robust growth in aluminiumexports from the UAE. Aluminium exportsfrom the country grew by 102 per cent in

the first half of 2012 and the sector isexpected to become one of the key non-oilindustry sectors in the future.

Daniyal Qureshi, group exhibition directorat Reed Exhibitions Middle East, organisersof the recently-held Aluminium Middle East2015, said, “The exhibition comes at theright time where the global aluminiumindustry can explore new opportunities as aresult of the boom in projects in the region.By bringing participants from across theworld, we will also provide an ideal platformto showcase the latest know-how andproducts, and forge business relations whileparticipants look into new opportunities.”

UAE-manufactured exports increasedfrom US$8.3bn in 2000 to approximatelyUS$59.2bn in 2012. The main industriesinclude chemicals, mineral products, paperproducts, textiles and clothing, food andbeverages, and wood products. Aluminium, cabling, petrochemicals, steel and marineindustry products are the largest individual

The manufacturing sector has seen steady growth since 2000, and the establishment of new free zones in the UAE hasattracted more investment in the industry from across the globe than ever before.

categories of manufactured products.Approximately 77 per cent of the UAE’smanufactured exports were sent to Asia in2012, 10.4 per cent were sent to Africa, 6.4per cent were sent to Europe and theremainder were sent to the US and othertransition economies, according to theDCCI report.

Dubai Aluminium, established in 1979,churned out more than one million tonnesof hot metal in 2012.

The UAE Ministry of Economy estimatesthat there were 5,201 industrialestablishments in 2011, employing almost400,000 staff – a growth of five per centcompared to 2010. A total of 40 per cent ofthe UAE’s manufacturing firms were locatedin Dubai in 2011, while 29 per cent were inSharjah, 15 per cent were in Ajman andseven per cent were in Abu Dhabi.Conversely, 58.8 per cent of manufacturinginvestments were made in the UAE’s capital,22 per cent were in Dubai and seven percent were in Fujairah (with the remaining inthe other emirates).

Last year, the UAE governmentimplemented a number of policies and tooksteps to ensure that manufacturing is well-supported. Facilitating manufacturing hasbeen accomplished by the establishment ofnumerous free zones, which encouragetrade within the zone and with othercountries. There are now more than 50 freezones across the UAE, specialising inindustry, technology, media and othersectors. Dubai’s first free zone – Jebel AliFree Zone (JAFZ) – was established in 1985and now houses more than 7,000companies, attracting more than 20 percent of the UAE’s FDI and accounting formore than 50 per cent of Dubai’s totalexports with a trade value of US$69bn.

Free trade agreements within the GCCand internationally also facilitate themanufacturing ‘boom’ recently predicted.Trade liberation is a key aspect of the UAE’sfree trade agreements – this includes theelimination of customs tariffs and chargeson the exchange of goods, which in turnleads to an increase in trade volumes andincreases the amount of national productsentering foreign markets.

The UAE has outlined a number ofstrategic economic plans and visions, whichencompass and embrace the need fordiversification. Sector development andeconomic growth have been stipulated asthe two main aims in the Dubai 2015 Vision,as well as the Dubai 2020 Vision, which iscurrently being formulated to take intoaccount Expo 2020 Dubai.

Abu Dhabi has also released its EconomicVision 2030, to “build an open, efficient, effective and globally integrated businessenvironment; adopt a disciplined fiscalpolicy that is responsive to economic cycles;establish a resilient monetary and financialmarket environment with manageable levelsof inflation; drive significant improvement inthe efficiency of the labour market; developa sufficient and resilient infrastructurecapable of supporting anticipated economicgrowth; develop a highly skilled, highlyproductive work force; and enable financialmarkets to become the key financiers ofeconomic sectors and projects”.

UAE Minister of Economy Sultan AlMansouri said industrial sector contributionto gross domestic product (GDP) is expectedto reach 25 per cent by 2025.

“Currently, the industrial sectorcontribution to the total GDP is estimated at10 to 11 per cent. By 2020, this figure istargeted to increase to 20 per cent and to 25per cent by 2025,” he said. This was in linewith the UAE’s strategic development plan toimplement economic diversification awayfrom oil over the coming years, Al Mansouriadded.

The infrastructure of the UAE and theindustrial zones located in Abu Dhabi,Dubai and all of the other emirates havebeen playing remarkable roles in attractingforeign investment and expertise, as well asenhancing the performance of themanufacturing sector overall.

Some of the recent internationalmanufacturing investments made in thecountry include the following:

can-pack Group new plant in DubaiA new manufacturing plant for Polandbased Can-Pack Group was unveiled atDubai Investment Park. Located on 13,935sqm of land, the facilities will increase thecompany’s production from 3.5mn cans tofive million cans per day. The newinvestment, which is estimated to have costUS$54.45mn, is increasing the company’soverall investment in Dubai to US$136.1mnwhile further expansion worth US$19.6mnis also underway and expected to becompleted later this year.

Lighting is big business in the MiddleEast. The commercial lighting fixturesmarket is predicted to increase by eight

to 10 per cent annually and is set to be worthUS$3.7bn by 2018, according to the marketresearch firm Ventures ME.

The booming lighting market comes aslittle surprise considering the number ofmajor infrastructure projects that areunderway and planned across the region. Infact, figures show that in 2014 alone the GCCsaw US$128.4bn worth of constructionprojects get underway.

Light Middle East, the only event in theregion dedicated to lighting design andtechnology industry, continues to mirror thegrowing market, as it has experienced a 27per cent year-on-year growth in bothexhibitor numbers and exhibitor space, which the event organisers say is evidence ofthe confidence in the regional lightingfixtures market.

Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Epoc MesseFrankfurt Middle East, the company behindthe show, said, “Light Middle East continuesto act as the barometer for the regionallighting industry which, thanks to growinginfrastructure development and a resurgentregional construction sector, is on a steadygrowth path.”

The ninth edition, held in Dubai inNovember 2014, featured the ever-growingFuture Zone – a section designed toshowcase innovative technology that isshaping the industry’s future. Naturally, LEDlighting featured heavily in this section.

There is a growing demand in the GCC formore sustainable lighting solutions, particularly in the UAE where a new lightingstandard has banned the sale of bulbs that do

not reach certain energy-efficiency criteria. The standards are intended to ensure thatavailable bulbs are energy-efficient, highquality, safe, have limited hazardouschemicals and can be safely disposed of.

According to data from the EmiratesWildlife Society (EWS) in association with theWWF, lighting standards in the UAE haveencouraged the country’s residents tosignificantly reduce their ecological footprint. Results include a reduction in carbonemissions equivalent to removing 165,000cars from the road each year, and a medium-sized villa in Dubai can save up to AED2,315(US$630) every year on electricity bills.

Under the standard, suitable light bulbsinclude compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs),LEDs and halogens. Although LED lighting, which has been proven to be up to 70 percent more efficient than traditional sources, appears to be leading the way forward in low-emission lighting solutions.

The advantages of LED lighting vary fromgreater energy-efficiency, longer running –while incandescent light sources last for 800to 1,500 hours, LED sources can last up to60,000 hours – more resilient, easier todispose of and emit little heat, the latter ofwhich is particularly valuable when workingin the Gulf’s high temperatures.

Steve Towler, general manager for theMiddle East, North Africa and South Asiaregion for Dialight, a LED luminairemanufacturer, said, “You could have 100 HIDsources all hitting 400oC and it becomes veryuncomfortable for staff to work. Ourluminaires typically get up to around 50oC,which is a massive difference intemperature.”

Eaton, the global technology major in

power management solutions, boasts anarray of LED products, particularly as part ofits emergency lighting range, which was onshow at the recent safety and securityexhibition Intersec 2014.

Its products include Britesign 2, an ultra-low profile LED exit sign that contains a50,000 hour long life LED source and is said toprovide considerable savings in lampreplacement and maintenance costs incomparison to a traditional 8W lamp; as wellas Zeta 3, a versatile LED emergencyluminaire, which promises high performance, uniformity and low-energy performance.

GE Lighting, the division of GeneralElectric that specialises in global lightingsolutions, has taken the sustainable lightingdiscussion on one step further and shone alight on the benefits of interconnecting LEDlighting to what it calls the ‘industrialInternet’, enabling Internet-basedcommunication between machines andpeople.

The report, The Power of One Light: TheIndustrial Internet and Lighting, states,“[Data] can in turn be used to analyse andimprove all manner of systems; for example, indoor office environments where lightingcan be optimised according to building usageand occupancy.”

One example it highlights is to equipoutdoor LEDs with movement sensors andconnect them to CCTV systems in order tohelp police and emergency services respondin real-time to crimes and accidents.

The report goes on to explain, “A lighting-based industrial Internet infrastructure couldproduce invaluable data especially if indoorand outdoor lighting systems are linkedusing existing LED technologies.”

With an ever-growing lighting fixtures market and energy-efficiency standards being initiated, the GCC region holdsconsiderable business opportunities for sustainable lighting solutions developers.

As you make the descent into theUAE, glimmering solar panels in themiddle of the vast expanse of the

desert will definitely catch your attention. The rise of renewable energy developmentin the region has led to a diverse expansionof interest in the field, as industry experts, researchers and manufacturers are keen tobring the latest technology to the forefront.

According to the Middle East SolarIndustry Association (MESIA), the MENAregion is expected to spend aroundUS$50bn in its solar power sector by 2020since regional governments are keen toadopt clean energy and utilise the highlevels of solar irradiation in the area. Withmore than 37,000MW of wind, solar andhydroelectric projects likely to becommissioned by the end of the decade,

12,000MW and 15,000MW will be sourcedfrom wind and solar projects alone.

Funds for wind, solar, biofuels and low-carbon energy technology have gone up by16 per cent to US$310bn in 2014, accordingto Bloomberg New Energy Finance, makingit the first growth since 2011.

semiconducting nanocrystals: Theabundance of sunlight in the Middle Eastallows for the development of quantumdots or semiconducting crystals.Semiconducting nanocrystals, which werefirst produced in mid-1980, have the abilityto absorb light at different wavelengths.Aram Amassian, materials scientist andengineer at the King Abdullah University ofScience and Technology (KAUST) in SaudiArabia, said that there is a gap between the

level of sunlight available and the amountof energy produced as solar cells are notabsorbing enough sunlight. There is a lot oflight and heat present in the infrared regionof the spectrum, which the solar cells fail totrap. Mutiple crystals could effectivelycover the spectrum of visible light, including infrared rays that were previouslygetting wasted.

Ammar Neyfeh, associate professor ofelectrical engineering and computer scienceand head of the Nano Electronics andPhotonics Lab at Masdar Institute is workingwith the US’s Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology (MIT) to incorporate germaniuminto silicon-based solar cells to boost theirefficiency. The fundamental base of thesolar cell is called the p-n junction, which isbased on silicon material, said Nayfeh.Silicon is equipped to make use of only partof the sun’s spectrum. By combining siliconwith germanium, cells could use more of theelectromagnetic spectrum and becomemore efficient.

have successfully managed to convert more than 40 per cent ofsunlight hitting a solar plant into electricity, using focused sunlight.

Martin Green, professor and director of the Advanced Centre forAdvanced Photovoltaics (ACAP) at UNSW Scientia, said, “This is thehighest efficiency ever reported for sunlight conversion intoelectricity.” The team used commercial solar cells in a new way, making efficiency improvements readily available to the industry.

A major portion of the design involved the use of a customoptical bandpass filter to capture sunlight that is normally wastedby commercial solar cells on towers, and eventually convert it intoelectricity at a higher efficiency than the solar cells.

aluminium nanoparticles to prevent sand and dustsedimentation: Matteo Chiesa, associate professor of materialsscience and engineering and head of the Laboratory for Energy andNanoscience at Masdar Institute is investigating the use ofaluminium nanoparticles in special solar panel coatings that wouldprovide a ‘self-cleaning’ property. The Middle East region is proneto dust and sand through the year, challenging the efficiency of thesolar panels. With the coating, water droplets accumulating on thepanels gather dust. Due to the hydrophobic property of thecoating, the water droplets run off the panel, thereby cleaning it.

Cigs thin-film solar modules: German multinational Manz AG hasrevealed that it will be presenting its integrated turnkeyproduction line Manz CIGSfab, which will be used for theproduction of CIGS thin-film solar modules. Mohamed Alammawi,vice-president of sales in MENA for Manz AG, said, “The UAE isone of the frontrunners in developing, deploying andimplementing the renewable energy source. We are confidentthat our solutions can help energise the UAE's transformation toalternative energy production.”

The CIGS (copper indium gallium selenide) technology was takenover from Germany’s Würth Solar GmbH & Co., stated Manz AGofficials. CIGS production lines for thin film modules can deliver anefficiency percentage of 14.6, with an aperture efficiency of 15.9per cent. Through the films, the cost of solar power is lessexpensive than electricity from offshore wind parks and is at asimilar level as electricity obtained from fossil fuel power plants.

thin solar cell stickers: Stanford University researchers havedeveloped solar cell stickers – thin-film PV devices that can bestuck to the back of solar panels. However, the solar cell stickersare currently at a proof-of-concept (PoC) stage, according to theresearchers. The reported efficiencies of the devices have beenmade on cell areas no larger than 0.28 sq cm and are processed byhand in a lab environment.

Once launched in the market, solar cell stickers could beretrofitted on roofs, walls and windows- potentially any surfaceexposed to sunlight makes for a good canvas for the sticker.

W orld-class WaTEr and wastewater technologies andsustainable solutions were on show at the third edition ofthe International Water Summit (IWS), which took place at

the Abu Dhabi National Exhibitions Centre (ADNEC) in January 2015.Running from 19-22 January, the summit saw more than 7,000

people from the industry, including world leaders, industry experts, and business innovators, gather to promote and discuss watersustainability in arid regions.

HE Dr. Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, UAE Minister of State and Chairmanof Masdar, who opened proceedings, said, “Without access to safe, potable water, global ambitions to create a sustainable futureunderpinned by social and economic stability are unattainable. Yetacross the world, particularly in arid regions such as the Middle Eastand North Africa, significant water stress leaves our energy securityand economic future in the balance.”

IWS was co-located with the World Future Energy Summit (WFES)and EcoWASTE as part of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW),which took place from 17-24 January 2015 and was expected toattract more than 32,000 visitors from across 170 countries.

Leon Awerbuch, director and past president of the InternationalDesalination Association (IDA), dean of the IDA DesalinationAcademy, and president of Leading Edge Technologies, said, “IWSprovides an opportunity to show the reality of desalination powerand business – a reality which proves that desalination isenvironmentally-friendly, is designed to have a minimum impact onenvironment and, more importantly, has significant improvements inenergy costs.”

As well as the exhibition, IWS held a conference programme thatboasted more than 70 global speakers. Key topics covered at theconference included water conservation and future watersustainability, integrated water resource management, smart watertechnology, as well as the nexus of water and energy in food security.

The marketThe GCC’s market for water and wastewater treatment equipment isset to reach an estimated value of US$4bn by the year 2020,according to a paper prepared by Frost & Sullivan exclusively for IWS.

In the report, titled 360 Degree Perspective on the GCC Water andWastewater Treatment Market, the business managementconsultancy revealed that the fast-growing market – currently valuedat approximately US$2.2bn – is predicted to undergo an annualgrowth rate of 10.6 per cent.

According to Frost and Sullivan, the GCC governments haveallocated approximated US$100bn towards implementing betterwater technologies and energy-efficient desalination.

Kshitij Nilkanth, program manager, energy and environmentpractice MENA, for Frost & Sullivan, said, “The focus of the watersector in the region is surely shifting towards sustainable practices, wastewater treatment and recycling.”

Speaking about the UAE’s approach to adopting sustainablesolutions, Glen Trickle, vice-president and director engineering andtechnology at Xylem, stated, “What I see here is a lot of passion andurgency. There’s a lot more awareness here and it’s really quiteimpressive, the speed at which things develop.”

InnovationIWS 2015 shone a light on the array of innovative and sustainabletechnologies being presented by companies across the exhibitionand this focus was reflected in the show’s inaugural feature:Innovate@IWS.

Co-organised by Isle Utilities, the new initiative offered cleantechnology developers the opportunity to pitch their solutions to anexpert judging panel as well as a platform to connect with potentialinvestors and end users.

Christina de Poitiers, senior environmental consultant at IsleUtilities, said, “This has created a fantastic opportunity both for ourutilities to understand how the municipal market works in the MiddleEast, but also to give our emerging technologies the opportunity toattend an event they might otherwise not be able to.”

Organised into three categories, with the judging process spreadacross the first three days of the show, the winning companies of the2015 Innovate@IWS were Trevi Systems (Municipal Water), BGH(Industrial Water), and Thermowatt (Water for Real-Estate).

HOME TO 14 of the 20 most water-stressed countries in the world, the MENA region faces a water

crisis. Its burgeoning population, forecastto double by 2050, along with urbanisationand industrialisation, have all been puttingpressure on scarce water resources, withthe result that the water gap is forecast toquintuple by 2050, from 42 sq km perannum to 200 sq km per annum, accordingto the World Bank.

Desalinisation has played, and willcontinue to play, a critical role in meetingthe region’s pressing water needs; indeed, the region accounts for around 50 per centof global installed desalination capacity.According to Global Water Intelligence’slatest Desalination Tracker, 97 desalinationprojects are currently at various stages ofdevelopment throughout the MENA region.

However, conventional desalination ishighly energy intensive, as well as costly, and the waste products can be damaging tothe environment. Saudi Arabia, for example,is reported to be using around 300,000barrels of crude oil equivalent a day topower its 30+ desalination plants.

“The status quo is not sustainable.Reducing the cost of desalination, eliminating its reliance on fossil fuel, andmitigating its environmental impacts arecrucial,” comments the World Bank.

Growing focus on sustainabilityWith the growing focus on environmentalsustainability in the Middle East, theemphasis is now shifting from high-energythermal desalination to less energyintensive reverse osmosis, which uses amembrane separation process.

The region is playing a leading role inresearching, exploring and piloting newenergy efficient technologies fromadvanced membrane distillation, lowtemperature distillation and nanofiltrationto pressure retarded osmosis and forward

osmosis, which draws liquid through themembrane without the use of pumps.

Oman is home to the world’s firstcommercial forward osmosis plant at AlNajda; according to its developers, the UK’s

Modern Water, this technology can lowerenergy consumption by up to 30 per cent aswell as providing additional benefits such asreduced fouling of membranes andincreased membrane life, reduced chemicalconsumption and lower levels of pollutantsin produced water.

The region is also exploring the potentialfor desalination powered by renewableenergy, particular solar power.

“Solar energy – in particular heat fromconcentrated solar power (CSP) for thermaldesalination and electricity from solarphotovoltaic (PV) and CSP for membranedesalination – is a key solution in aridregions,” says the International RenewableEnergy Agency (IRENA).

An encouraging development has been theannouncement in January 2015 that Spain’s

The MENA region is playing a leading role in pioneering environmentally-friendly and renewable energy-powereddesalination solutions.

Abengoa has been selected by AdvancedWater Technology (AWT), the commercialarm of King Abdulaziz City for Science andTechnology (KACST), to jointly develop theworld’s first large-scale desalination plantto be powered by PV solar energy, at AlKhafji in North Eastern Saudi Arabia. Theplant, which will produce 60,000 sqm ofwater a day to supply Al Khafji city, willhave a system to optimise powerconsumption and a pre-treatment phase toreduce the high level of salinity and the oilsand fats that are present in the region’sseawater, according to Abengoa.

Combining technologies“As the demand for fresh water grows inthe Middle East, the future of desalinationwill depend on combining established andemerging technologies,” comments FaisalWali, operations manager at the Water

Desalination and Reuse Center, KingAbdullah University of Science andTechnology (KAUST), Saudi Arabia, in anarticle for Nature Middle East.“Researchers need to focus on thehybridisation of forward osmosis, membrane distillation and adsorption

desalination coupled with, and without, conventional desalination processes suchas thermal desalination and reverseosmosis.” This combination will assist thedevelopment of energy efficient andrenewable energy-driven desalinationtechnologies, he adds.

A number of pilot projects are underwayin the region. The UAE’s Masdar launched apilot programme in 2013 to test anddevelop new and advanced energy-efficientseawater-desalination systems that can bepowered by renewable energy sources,

laying the groundwork for developinglarge-scale commercially viabledesalination plants by 2020 that can bepowered by renewable energy. In mid-2014 it awarded contracts to fourcompanies – Spain’s Abengoa, France’sVeolia and Degrémont, and US-based Trevi

Systems – to develop small-scale pilotplants in Ghantoot, 90 km west of AbuDhabi. Throughout the course of theproject, scheduled to last 18 months, thetest plants will provide 1,500 cu/m ofdrinking water a day to Abu Dhabi’s waterinfrastructure.

Veolia for example will be usingproprietory technologies such as highperformance sea water pre-treatmentcombining air flotation and filtration and anew osmosis membranes feed con-figuration allowing high treatment fluxes.Pairing state-of-the-art energy efficientdesalination technologies with renewableenergy should allow power recovery of upto 98 per cent, the company claims.

While Abengoa is using a hybrid systemcombining reverse osmosis (RO) with aninnovative membrane distillation system, with the objective of improving the waterrecovery and productivity of seawater ROplants, while reducing the volume of brinedischarge.

While issues remain to be resolved inscaling up and commercialising innovativenew desalination technologies, it is clearthat combining such technologies with theregion’s abundant solar resources couldoffer a way forward in mitigating theregion’s water security issues. And as thecosts of solar technology continue to fall, desalinisation could become a viableoption for the poorer countries of theregion too.

The Idea of safety is deeply anchored in thephilosophy of each and every oil company, writes hai-Thuy ngo, TÜV functional safetyprofessional and industry manager oil and gasfor endress+hauser.

It is a matter of protecting people, environment, infrastructure and last, but notleast, reputation.

While applying safety measures in a properway is not an easy task to fulfil, it is even worseif you get the impression that the implementedsafety systems have a bigger impact onimpairing the daily operation on your plant dueto spurious trips, instead of making it safer.

explosion safety (aTeX, fm, ex d, ex ia) hasbeen practiced for many years within the oiland gas industry, as operators and shareholdershave been striving to improve the functionalsafety of their processes.

several incidents remind us how difficult it isto ensure safe operations, such as theexplosion of piper alpha in 1988 in the northsea, which was the starting point for stringentregulations in order to prevent such accidentshappening again. although instrumentation

was really not involved in the explosion, whichled to the deaths of 167 offshore workers, regulations on functional safety wereformulated under IeC61508.

each process on a plant poses a certain riskwhich is evaluated during hazard andoperability haZop studies. depending on theprobability and severity of an incident, safetymeasures need to be implemented in order tobring the risk to a tolerable level. Thesemeasures can be addressed to different layersof protection and you can make the plantinherently safer by redesigning processes orimplementing safety Instrumented systems(sIs) capable of bringing the process back to asafe state.

The level of risk reduction with sIs is rated indifferent levels – the so called safety IntegrityLevels (sIL). sIL2 would, for example, representa risk reduction of at least factor 100.nevertheless, we always have to live with acertain residual risk.

There are of course recommendations andstandards on how to properly apply safetymeasures in the process industry.

The main two regulations are IeC 61508 andthe IeC 61511. IeC 61508 is a generic standardthat offers guidelines on how to properlydevelop electric, electronic and programmablesafety related systems, and is therefore mainlyapplies to suppliers and manufacturers such asendress+hauser.

IeC 61511 is the sector specific standard forthe process industry, covering the completesafety life cycle in a process plant from riskassessment to decommissioning. Those partiesengineering, implementing and operating sIsare concerned with this regulation.

In addition, oil and gas industry specificsafety standards are available; for example,apI2350, fourth edition, which addressesoverfill protection for storage tanks inpetroleum facilities.

Knowing and implementing these standardsand recommendations is just the beginning.selecting the correct measuring principle foryour application is crucial. make sure that youpartner with suppliers and/or safetyconsultants, who select the safety instrumentthat fits your application.

THE GULF TRAFFIC Exhibition and Conference, whichconcluded its 11th edition in December 2014, is going fromstrength to strength. The latest edition brought together

more than 200 of the world’s leading traffic and transportinfrastructure suppliers, looking to capitalise on the opportunities inthe region, which has recently committed to investing approximatelyUS$121.3bn to improving its land transportation infrastructure.

This year’s event was opened by HE Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman ofthe Board and Executive Director of the Dubai Roads and TransportAuthority (RTA), in the presence of other dignitaries including HEHelal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai’s Department ofTourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM) and CEO of Dubai WorldTrade Centre. Running parallel to the three-day exhibition, theconference was inaugurated by Eng. Maitha Bin Adai, CEO of Trafficand Roads Agency (RTA), who delivered a keynote address high-lighting the RTA’s growth plans that are in place leading up Expo 2020.

Bin Adai said, “Transport is vital to our economic activities andsocial life and must be planned, designed and operated as a completesystem with integrated modes of transportation such as pedestrian, bicycles, rail, bus, water transport, taxis and vehicles. Currently, thedaily contribution of all means of public transport exceeds 800,000passenger trips, which represents about 14 per cent of the daily totalnumber of passenger trips.”

She added that the RTA is planning to increase the public transportpercentage to 20 per cent by 2020 and to 30 per cent by 2030, andhighlighted the RTA’s efforts to reduce the number of road accidentsthrough its Pedestrian Safety and Mobility Action Plan.

“The implementation of the action plan has resulted in a 40 percent reduction in pedestrian fatalities [in Dubai] from 78 in 2009 to50 in 2013. There was also a reduction in the overall accidentfatalities from 21.9 fatalities per 100,000 in 2006 to 3.9 fatalities per100,000,” Bin Adai explained.

The conference agenda was packed with some world-class casestudies on how multimodal systems and management have helpeddecrease accidents and create a much safer, more efficient andsustainable traffic environment, as well as discussions that focussedon all three transportation groups: private vehicles, pedestrians andpublic transport.

Despite improvements in regional road safety, much still needs tobe done to sustain progress. The first day of the conference, chairedby Alan Bristow, director for road space management for surfacetransport for Transport for London, featured a line-up of transportexperts and looked at road safety strategies, current road safetytrends and challenges, and the impact of multimodal transport.

According to the World Bank, traffic accidents in the Middle Eastand North Africa (MENA) kill between 17 to 22 people per 100,000every year, compared with an OECD average of 6.2 per 100,000.

Day two of the conference looked at the most recentadvancements made in intelligent transport systems (ITS), as well asthe challenges that governments face in the development anddeployment of advanced technologies across all modes of transport. It also focused on the growing importance of networks and big dataas well as looking forward to electric vehicles.

The last day played host to the MENA Parking Conference, theregion’s first conference solely dedicated to parking. With so muchconstruction activity happening across the region, parking is anintegral part of the overall transportation infrastructure package.Nowadays project designers are more thoughtful, carefullyintegrating support services and modern parking solutions with theoverall designs, and specialist partners have been sought for majorparking structure expansions in Doha, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh.

On the potential growth of the industry, Dave Hill, internationalrepresentative for the International Parking Institute and chairmanof the MENA Parking Conference, commented, “Parking isdeveloping itself as a distinct and vibrant industry. In the MENAregion, 380mn people accommodate more than 38mn cars.Consider for a moment that each vehicle must have at least twoparking spaces.

“Actual construction reviews estimate that most cities build amplesupply – this amounts to anywhere from seven to nine parkingspaces per vehicle, priced at anywhere from US$2,500 toUS$30,000. The result is a level of parking investment betweenUS$950mn and US$30bn in the Middle East alone.”

The latest edition of the Gulf Traffic Exhibition and Conference took place in December 2014, highlighting and discussingthe major topics in the traffic and transport industry today.

SECURITY AND SAFETY industry professionals from across theglobe gathered to attend the 17th edition of Intersec, whichkicked off at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition

Centre last month. Opened by His Highness Sheikh Mansoor binMohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the global trade show forsecurity, safety and fire protection ran from 18-20 January 2015 andplayed host to approximately 1,237 exhibitors from 54 countries.

Ahmed Pauwels, CEO of Messe Frankfurt Middle East, theorganisers behind Intersec, said, “We are glad to see a sustainedincrease in interest in reaching the substantial Middle East market.”

He added, “It is not only an interactive networking and knowledge-sharing platform, but it also facilitates some of the game-changingpartnerships that make an impact on the regional security scene.”

The three-day show has continued its steady growth, havingexperienced a 10 per cent increase this year on the previous edition, with more than 2,000 brands on show across 48,000 sqm of space.

In addition to the numerous exhibitors from overseas, theorganisers reported that Intersec is increasingly attracting more localcompanies, as it has experienced a 27 per cent year-on-year increaseof UAE exhibitors.

The growing presence of exhibitors and brands at the safety andsecurity show, both regional and worldwide, is little surpriseconsidering that the global security equipment market is estimatedto grow to a value of US$116bn by 2016.

Divided into five core sections, consisting of Commercial Security,Fire and Rescue, Homeland Security and Policing, Safety and Health, and Information Security, Intersec is designed to act as a platform tolaunch new products and services.

A platinum sponsor of the exhibition, Honeywell showcased itsportfolio of ‘connected’ smart security, safety and home automationsolutions at this year’s exhibition.

THE 40TH EDITION of Middle EastElectricity (MEE) is set to takeplace from 2-4 March 2015 in

Dubai. Since 2013, the show has not onlywitnessed a 40 per cent increase in visitorattendance, but has also acquired anadditional 21 per cent floor space to caterfor the growing MENA power industry, which is forecasted to expand byUS$70.7bn per year up to 2018.

Informa Energy Group director AnitaMathews said, “When Middle EastElectricity was launched in 1975, it washeld in a tent on the banks of Dubai Creek. The show now boasts more than 54,000sqm of exhibition space, and received atotal attendance of 50,629 last year, thehighest number of visitors we have everreceived at the show.

“In the event industry 40 years is nomean feat and we are one of the longeststanding exhibitions in the UAE’s eventcalendar,” Mathews added.

“I don’t use the term lightly when I say‘stakeholders are key’, and one of the maindrivers of the event’s success has beenmaintaining our focus regarding theexpectations of our stakeholders. Formany of our exhibitors we have grownright alongside them, building the trustthat is required to ensure the longevity ofour event.”

Companies that have confirmed theirparticipation at MEE this year includePerkins, Volvo, Doosan, SDMO, AlFanar,Cummins, MarelliMotori and Ducab.

According to Informa, a key successfactor of MEE is its targeted approach onthe industry’s key focus areas such aspower generation, transmission anddistribution, lighting and renewableenergy. This year the show will have arenewed emphasis on the lighting sectorto ensure that this vertical segment in theshow grows to its full potential, theorganisers revealed.

The annual power event will, for the first time, host a dedicated lighting zone at Dubai World Trade Centre to cater for theever-increasing demand for lighting products in the region.

Focus on lightingAccording to Informa, lighting has been oneof MEE’s fastest growing sectors. To meetthe continuing demand, the 2015 event willfeature, for the first time ever, an area solelydedicated to the lighting industry, increasingthe total floor space by 13 per cent.

In addition to exhibitor demand, theneed for a dedicated lighting platform atMEE has been fuelled by strong growth inthe lighting industry. The recent revival inthe region’s construction sector has led tothe increase in the Gulf’s lighting fixturesmarket by 10 per cent per annum to reach avalue of US$3.75bn.

The UAE and Saudi Arabia are leading theway in the burgeoning GCC lighting sectorand collectively accounted for around 70per cent of the regional market last year, the organisers added.

“I am really looking forward to what thisextension of the show will bring, as thelighting sector in particular depends oninnovation and technologicaladvancement,” said Mathews.

MEE 2015 will also offer an extendededucational programme with threeinformative conferences, supported bystrategic government partner DubaiMunicipality. The show will witness thereturn of the Green Energy and SolarMiddle East Conferences and introduce aconference solely dedicated to lighting tocoincide with the expanded show vertical. This conference will handle major issuessuch as transitioning to and supporting theLED market in the Middle East, as well as asession on how new sustainabilityguidelines are the backbone of both AbuDhabi’s and Dubai’s aggressive goals tobecome smart, sustainable cities.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, director generalof Dubai Municipality, remarked, “The 40th

anniversary of MEE is a true testament toboth the resilience and growth the regional

power industry has witnessed over the lastfour decades. We fully support the growthefforts of this exhibition even further andare excited to see what new developmentsand initiatives come out of the GreenEnergy Conference.”

Highlighting sustainable solutions inthe energy sectorThe conference will highlight the urgencyand vision in creating sustainable energysolutions with a focus on combiningtraditional and alternative energy sources, for example by creating hybrid systems tominimise the risks inherent with both andincorporate sustainable energy means.

Co-located with MEE is Solar MiddleEast, which will feature a comprehensivegathering of solar technologies fromsuppliers in the region and showcase thelatest developments.

The Solar Middle East Conference, whichtakes place on Day Two of the event, willprovide a holistic view of the regional solarindustry with country focusses on SaudiArabia, Kuwait and Jordan.

Solar projects worth US$2.7bn are set tobe unveiled in the Middle East and NorthAfrica (MENA) in 2015, according to a newstudy by the Middle East Solar IndustryAssociation (MESIA).

The study, entitled MENA Solar Outlook2015, shows that 1,800MW worth of solarprojects will be tendered or awarded duringthe next 12 months. The figure represents asix-fold increase from 2014 when less than300MW of solar projects were awarded. Toput this into perspective, a 100MW solar PVpower plant is capable of powering roughly200,000 homes.

A good example of the regional movetoward solar can be found in Egypt. As itsnatural gas infrastructure continues to age,it is becoming more expensive in Egypt togenerate power using the fuel. Egypt has,

therefore, turned its attention to how it cantake advantage of its abundant potential forsolar and wind energy.

The UAE daily The National reportedrecently that there were two factorsfuelling the sharp rise in solar projects inthe Middle East region.

Firstly, the price of solar systems hasdropped dramatically since 2009 when thefirst large-scale solar project in the MiddleEast was unveiled by Masdar in Abu Dhabi. The installation cost of utility-scale solarphotovoltaic (PV) power plants has fallenfrom about US$7 per watt in 2008 to lessthan US$1.50 per watt in 2014. Thisamounts to more than a 75 per cent costreduction. As a result of this cost reduction, solar energy is now competitive with thewholesale price of electricity in manyjurisdictions in the Middle East.

Informa said that US$50bn will beinvested in the Middle East solar industry toincrease capacity from 380MW to15,000MW by 2020.
