Tea in Texas was charmed to find these U.S. Postal Service Lady Bird Johnson Centennial stamps, which honor this grand Texas ladys efforts to beautify the nations highways.

A s u p p o r t e r o f t h e environment and protector of our native plants, Lady Bird Johnson championed the Highway Beautification Act of 1965 and encouraged others to keep the beauty of our landscape as we

remember it in our youth and to leave this splendor for our grandchildren.

Her legacy is honored at Austins Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center where research, education and projects promote the use of native plants.

Located just 30 miles north of Dallas, McKinney offers visitors the perfect getaway destination. Its tree-lined streets, historic downtown and tight-knit community gives this fast-growing city a friendly, small-town feel despite a population which topped 141,000 in January 2013.

Home to one of the states largest historic districts, McKinneys charm and comfortable pace is quite different from the metroplexs urban sprawl, prompting Money Magazine to select McKinney as its #2 Best Place to Live in America in 2012 (up from the #5 spot in 2010, and #14 in 2008). Discover McKinney and find out why we truly are unique by nature! Youll enjoy exploring our eclectic boutiques and specialty shops, art galleries, and top-notch dining on our quaint downtown square,

  • The City of Waxahachie is only about 35 miles from Dallas, but its nostalgic ambiance and period architecture dating to the glory days of the late 1800s and early 1900s, make it feel a world away from the metroplex.

It has the kind of charm that movies are made of, and it has been featured in a number of films and commercials. Some of the homes that make Waxahachie so captivating are featured in 45th Annual Gingerbread Trail Tour of Homes June 1 and 2. These homes, and all the surrounding activities of the tour weekend, make it a wonderful time to visit Waxahachie.

During the late 1800s through the 1920s, Ellis County was among the wealthiest areas of the state, largely because of

    its cotton and s u b s e q u e n t industry and c o m m e r c e , according to h o m e t o u r materials. Many of its residents, farmers, bankers and industrialists,

built these large, beautiful homes, and notable public bui ldings , such as the Famous E l l i s C o u n t y Courthouse, were constructed as well. Today, Waxahachie is still blessed to have many of these buildings.

In addition to the home tours, activities of the weekend include:

Saturday and Sunday: an arts and crafts fair, food, childrens activities and music in Getzendaner Park, Plein Aire painting and art show; courthouse tours

Saturday only: Farmers Market; Midlothian Classic Wheels benefit car show on the square; Living Magazine metal art show; Fly-In pancake breakfast and aircraft display at Midway Airport; Movie Places in the Heart and art sales at Getzendaner Park; Master Gardeners garden tour

Sunday only: Studebaker Club car show on the Square.

Several of the events benefit the Ellis County Courthouse.

  • It takes months o f p l a n n i n g to pull off an affair like the N e w c o m e r F r i e n d s o f Greater Plano V a l e n t i n e s Tea, but the 16 hostesses in charge of the elaborate tables that anchor this

    event make it look easy.

I tell them, you dont have to use your best china, you just have to be creative, said Event Coordinator Teri Sanford, whose spring green and white table included a goody bag decorated with lovely artwork of a teapot and flower and a lovely centerpiece with fresh tulips, and natural materials. The hostesses follow Terris advice to be creative, putting time and lots of thought into making their tables

spectacular. This years tables included a colorful, textural

Taste of Asia, a pretty pink table that was

abundant with florals, a Dr. Suess table, a pirates table, a lovely blue willow table with yellow accents, a Valentines table with centerpiece vases filled with pink and yellow candy, and, especially timely on February 12, a Mardi Gras table.

    Exceptional musical e n t e r t a i n m e n t w a s provided by professional musicians, and lovely tea fare was provided by

Into My Garden Tea Room of Plano.

Many of the attendees donned festive hats that complemented the tablescapes, and three hat tables offered hats for those who wished to borrow one for the event.

  • Timeless Style in the Spotlight at Chocolate Angel Fashion Show

Glamorous designs of the 1940s , 50s and 60s lit up the runway at a vintage fashion show hosted by Steven Porterfield at The Chocolate Angels High Street location in Plano in February.

Porterfield, owner of The Cats Meow in Midland, provides vintage fashion to the stars through his work

with the film industry, and he also provides textile appraisals for PBS Antiques Roadshow.

The fashion show featured an impressive parade of clothing and lovely vintage hats and accessories. Porterfield conveyed that hats were a critical accessory to help women feel feminine in the 1940s World War II era, when fabric was in short supply.

During the war you could only use three or four yards to make a dress, so you would use a hat to customize the look.

Costume jewelry was another way to turn up the wattage. Porterfield related the majority of vintage costume jewelry was produced in the U.S., and pieces from the States are the most desirable.

Its not real jewelry; its costume, but it is like a work of art, he explained.

  • Porterfield remarked that vintage fashion first became popular in the 1960s, and styles from the 1950s and 1960s are the most popular eras for vintage clothing today.

Several of the outfits featured in the show resembled dresses that are currently

in style, proving that timeless designs never go out of style.

The show attracted a full-house. Guests enjoyed a lovely afternoon tea before the show. Sponsors for the event were Sherrie McCall of Chocolate Angel Cafe and Tearoom, and Marilyn Harris of Chic Cherie Vintage Clothing and Jewelry.

Fashion shows are held at High Street twice a year with the next one scheduled for September focusing on Holiday Fashions and Homecoming. The February 2014 Show will be inspired by Downton Abbey.

  • Quilters Guild of Dallas Presents Awards

    by Marcia Hampton

The Quilters Guild of Dallas recently honored four outstanding guild members with its Founders Award and Silver Thimble Award.

Pictured left to right are Judy Kriehn, Guild Present; Carol Dickschat, Founders Award; Mary Lord, Silver Thimble; Fran Casey, Silver Thimble; and Martha Smith, Silver Thimble. The Founders Award honors someone who has been a members for at least five years and has consistently furthered the goals of the Guild. The Silver Thimble Award honors someone who has been a member for at least three years and has gone above and beyond in their volunteer duties.

The awards are presented annually. The late Helene Hibbs, founder of the Dallas Quilt Guild, initiated the awards in 1984. Nominations are solicited from Guild membership, and a committee of past recipients chooses the award winners.

    by D. Michelle Lindsey

Quilters, are you looking for a way to give back to your community but dont know how? Quilts of Valor Foundation is a non-profit organization that makes, collects and distributes quilts to Americas service members touched by war.

Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF) has distributed more than 83,000 quilts, but there are many more service members on the list. Quilts are awarded at many different levels: they may go to military hospitals where Chaplains award them to service members, there may be presentations of quilts of valor to entire service units returning from combat deployments, they may be awarded at VAs, or presented individually. But no matter how a quilt of valor is given, the impact it delivers is unequivocal.

You can participate in a nationwide project celebrating QOVFs 10th anniversary by visiting their website at www.qovf.org and downloading their 10th anniversary block, and making a quilt. Their goal is to make 100 Quilts of Valor by November 2013. This organization depends on donations and volunteers to reach its goal of saying thank you to these heroes. For more information visit their website at www.qovf.org.

Have a quilting/craft story to share with us? Contact Michelle at [email protected].

    Tea Lovers Book Releases

With summer just around the corner, a refreshing glass of iced tea and a captivating book provide the perfect combo to keep readers cool on those hot days. Fans of New York Times best-selling authors Laura Childs and Joanne Fluke are sure to enjoy new adventures with their favorite sleuths, Suzanne Dietz and Hannah Swenson. And, should Marie Bostwicks Cobbled Court Quilts series be your cup of tea, you are in for a treat as she invites us to join Mary Dell Templeton in Texas.

STAKE & EGGS by Laura Childs is the fourth release in her Cackleberry Club mystery series. This delightful read effectively combines suspense and humor along with a dash of romance. For those new to this series, a brief introduction is in order. After losing their husbands, friends Suzanne, Toni, and Petra find a fresh start as entrepreneurs with the opening of their successful business, the Cackleberry Club caf.

After a snowmobile crashes into the woods behind the Cackleberry Club caf, Suzanne finds her towns most hated banker beheaded by a wire staked in the snow. When his death is ruled a murder, suspects and motives abound, and Suzannes best sleuthing skills get a workout. The many twists and turns provide an intriguing plot. In addition, readers will enjoy lighthearted moments as Toni and Petra join in the hunt for the treasure medallion while they help Suzanne gather clues. And, if you happen to be a hopeless romantic, nothing could be better than finding out that love is in the air between Suzanne and Sam.

Readers will be happy to know Childs continues her traditional postscript inclusion of yummy recipes. You can create your own Cackleberry Club caf at home by whipping up a batch of Lemon Cornbread with Carrot Quiche. Serve with Cheggnog and enjoy rave reviews!

RED VELVET MURDER by Joanne Fluke is a riveting read that you wont be able to put down until youve read it cover to cover. When Lake Edens Albion Hotel celebrates its recent renovation, Hannah Swensons bakery, The Cookie Jar caters the affair. The evening begins with news and

speculation as to why Doctor Bev has returned to Lake Eden. When one of the guests, Barbara Donnelly, falls from the penthouse the lavish event takes a somber turn. Later, Barbara confides to Hannah that her fall was the result of her brother trying to kill her and not an accident. Hannah finds her sleuthing skills honed as she begins investigating.

The plot thickens when Hannah offers help after noticing that someone has driven into Millers Pond. When she dives into the water she recognizes Doctor Bev behind the wheel of her Maserati. With great effort Hannah

brings her to the surface but is unable to resuscitate her. Imagine her dismay when she learns that Doctor Bevs death wasnt accidental and that she is now the prime murder suspect! How will Hannah untangle the mysteries of Barbaras accident, Doctor Bevs murder, as well as prove her innocence?

Flukes recipes interspersed throughout the book will make readers wish that The Cookie Jar was nearby. However, you are in luck, as her Red Velvet Surprise Cupcakes, Snappy Turtle Pie, Chicken Tetrazzini Hotdish, and Four Alarm Brownie Cookies will bring a touch of Hannahs bakery to your home.

Marie Bostwicks recently released prequel to her Cobbled Court Quilts series is entitled BETWEEN HEAVEN AND TEXAS. Whether you are a native Texan or just wish you were, you will find this book absolutely charming.

Welcome to Too Much where the women are strong-willed and the men are handsome yet shiftless. Ever since Mary Dell Templeton and her twin sister Lydia Dale were children, their Aunt Velvet has warned them away from local boys. But its well known that the females in Mary Dells family have two traits in common superior sewing skills and a fatal weakness for men.

Readers new to Bostwicks books will love becoming acquainted with smart and sassy Mary Dell who has hopes of one day turning her love of sewing into a business. When her dreams of family dont turn out as she plans, she begins to piece together a life that, like the colorful quilts she creates, will prove vibrant, rich, and absolutely unforgettable Mary Dells ability to love lavishly, forgive freely, and persevere through disappointments

offers a heartwarming story of encouragement. The discussion guide included at the end of the book makes this a perfect choice for a book club.

Janet Pool enjoys reading, traveling with her husband, paper crafts and, of course, anything related to tea! Read more with Janet at letshaveatea.googlepages.com

While trying to think of a way to share my flower garden with our family, I decided to have an old fashion Tea party on our lawn in Spring, TX. Since that first tea in 2003, we have grown to nearly 60 family members, including 25 young nieces, nephews, and grandchildren; all growing up with memories of Tea in the garden.

I start planning our Tea by choosing the flowers for the yard that will show best in Texas c o m e M a r c h or April . The daffodils, alyssum,

Snapdragons, pansy and petunias, all bloom by then, and their spicy scents fill the air.

She was born in Michigan in the 50s into a middle income traditional family. The fall after her high school graduation changed her life.

Everything seemed to be on track and normal until her friend Jean Hammond called and invited her to come to her New Years Eve party. The only problem with that was it was in Houston, Texas. Theresa Rea decided to drive to the party alone. She never went back to Michigan to live. She slept on Jeans couch until she landed her first job. When I asked her more detail about her first position she was hesitant to give a lot of detail. Being the inquisitive friend I am I continued to press. Her goal to be a designer actually started at a PORTA CAN COMPANY! Next time you are visiting a Porta Can take a moment and thank her for the design and comfort of the unit! Her career goals still unfulfilled, she was still in full search for a new position. Her next opportunity came in the oil and gas business. Before long she had a six figure income and was traveling on corporate jets. Theresa would work on large projects with Exxon designing the interior of their new offices.

Theresa always loved clothes, shoes, purses, and especially jewelry. Making jewelry was a way to express the beauty she saw in the world. She would see a piece of art or a sculpture and recreate it as a piece of jewelry.

She could design anything, but her favorite pieces were more rustic using wire, pieces of metal, and leather. At first her passion for making jewelry came in the form of giving gifts to her loved ones. Soon others saw the pieces and wanted her to design special pieces for them. As we all know, the economy took a fall a few years ago, and Theresa was laid off her job. At first she didnt seem to worry, but as weeks turned into two years she was becoming desperate for an income. So, her love of jewelry design became a career.

Things were going well, until as Theresa was planning to attend her sons wedding, she noticed a lump in her breast. With all the activity surrounding the wedding she did not get to the doctor for a few weeks. The news was not good. She had a rare form

    o f b r e a s t cancer. That was a really d i f f i c u l t time for her. Theresa was p laced on d i s a b i l i t y and rarely found the

time or energy to create new

designs, much less attend shows. This story does not get better, as just when we thought she had beat it, she again became ill around Christmas 2012. What we hoped was the flu turned out to be the cancer returning, this time with a mighty blow. So much so that she declined more chemo and chose to place her illness in Gods hands. It is incredible to all that know her how she has managed to retain her sense of humor and wit. She is such a funny lady. When I see her I always leave with a sense of being in Gods company. She now lives in a hospice home in Houston. She is wheelchair bound and in a lot of pain, but she is always up for company or a chat with a friend on the phone. I find her amazing. If you visit her she is in her bed and in pain, but she always asks Can I get you anything?

Time is not on Theresas side. The cancer is moving quickly taking more things away from her everyday. Just eating is a chore for her. Those of us that love her will miss her greatly. I mean who really wears a hot pink wig? I loved being with her, laughing with her, seeing the beauty in simple things, and am not sure how I will fill the void. I have told her about my loved ones that are in Heaven, and she plans to look them up and share the fun things we have done. I still have many family members and friends but none like my friend, the Lady with the Pink Hair.

Thank you for allowing me the time to tell you about my special friend.

Always GivingTheresa donated all of her jewelry supplies to, Turning Point, an organization for underserved girls. They are making jewelry and will sell it for funds to attend theater and art shows. There is a lot of inventory still for sale. If you would like more information feel free to contact me @ 713 294 3614. We will donate proceeds to The Pink Project, a breast cancer artist organization that was a huge support for Theresa.

    Tea Treasures from Taiwan

By Jeffrey LorienHappy spring! As I write this, today is officially Earth Day. I think it should be a great reminder that every day is Earth Day, and to where the actual credit goes! So in humble recognition of the Authority that brought us this glorious planet and all that springs forth, I hereby pronounce every day as Earth Day. So, last issue we left with a teaser about Brandy Oolong. Unique to Taiwan , this heavily oxidized oolong could initially be mistaken for a black tea; but at about 85% oxidation, it indeed is an oolong. Known for its unique flavor profile and creamy body, Brandy Oolong is quickly growing in popularity among oolong lovers. Although Brandy Oolong can come from several different cultivars or varietals, the resulting liquor is dark amber with aromatic notes of roasted sugar and stone fruit. We love the mouth feel on this tea! It is so smooth and complex and has a great sweet finish. Some people experience a subtle camphor taste as well. The Taiwanese are quite creative and diligent in creating new teas. One particular cultivar known as Ruby 18 (which is great for

creating Brandy Oolong) took decades in testing before being released to farmers for planting. It was worth the wait. Ruby 18 is a unique hybrid of an assam and an indigenous varietal. Brandy Oolongs, while still pretty rare in the US , can be a great alternative to black teas, and an exciting new choice in the growing stable of Taiwanese Oolongs.

Jeffrey Lorien is a tea enthusiast, world traveler, and founder of Austins own Zhi Tea. Jeffrey has a lifelong dedication to organic agriculture and is passionate about helping to elevate the American tea culture one cup at a time.

    Tea Treasures from Taiwan

  • by Ben Schlappig

Ben is a travel consultant, travel writer, and avid points

collector living in Bellevue, Washington. He travels over 300,000 miles per year and spends around 100 nights per year in hotels. Ben blogs at boardingarea.com/blogs/onemileatatime .

For those of you not familiar with the Burj Al Arab, its the worlds only seven star hotel, whatever that means. When I was in Dubai last December I had afternoon tea at the Burj Al Arab. However, I was only able to reserve a table at Sahn Eddar, the hotels lobby lounge. This time around I was hoping to have afternoon tea at the Skyview Bar, which is located on the 27th floor of the hotel.

We were planning only a couple of days in advance, so I figured we had virtually no chance of securing a table. I sent off an email to their reservations department, and was shocked to receive a confirmation for afternoon tea at the Skyview Bar for 1PM on our day of arrival.

The second course was the chefs carvery of the day, which was some sort of beef with potato.

At this point coffee/tea orders were taken. I ordered both a cup of vanilla infused tea and an iced coffee. They encourage you to try as many as youd like, so I certainly took them up on that.

Bling it on: Afternoon tea in the Skyview Bar at Burj Al Arab

While those orders were put in, we were offered a selection of finger sandwiches, each of which was explained to us in great detail. We were offered more sandwiches, though had to turn them down as seven courses is plenty for us.

Service began with a glass of champagne, which was Louis Roederer Brut. That was quickly followed by an artfully presented berry tart with cream.

  • The afternoon tea is seven courses and costs 450AED (~$122USD) per person, which must be among the biggest and most expensive afternoon teas out there.

We left the Grosvenor House at around 12:15PM and made it to the Burj Al Arab at around 12:30PM. The hotel is located on a manmade island, and theres no public access allowed. So at the gate you have to show your confirmation before theyll let you enter.

Burj Al Arab style carrier: this contained lots of sweets, jams and scones.

As was the case last time, I found the public areas of the hotel to be a complete spectacle. The hotel guests seemed to mostly either be Middle Easterners or older Russian men with their daughters wives. Meanwhile there were people at the hotel just to enjoy afternoon tea, which seemed to be mostly Brits and Japanese people, both of which were taking pictures as if it were a red carpet function (hey, I was part of that group too!).

After briefly touring the hotel we took the elevator to the Skyview Bar at around 12:45PM and checked in. We were invited to take a seat, as our table would be ready shortly. If youre having afternoon tea at either of the facilities its worth noting that they seat tables in order, starting with the best tables by the window. So the earlier you arrive, the better table youll get. We were among the first there, so got an awesome table by the window.

The bar is interesting in that it feels more like a cruise ship from the late 90s than the worlds most expensive hotel. Though I guess it does feel a bit gaudy/tacky, which fits in with the theme of the hotel. Our waitress was a lovely lady from Indonesia, and she familiarized us with the menu and explained that we could have as much as we wanted of everything, except champagne, which was an extra 150AED (~$40.50USD) per glass beyond the first one.

The tea service included seven courses of exquisitely made confections. We were offered a tiered tray of sweets, presented on a Burj Al Arab hotel-inspired carrier. We were also offered a to-go box with more packaged sweets.

Ive now had afternoon tea at both Sahn Eddar (the lobby bar) and the Skyview Bar, and definitely enjoyed the latter more for the amazing views.

Obviously afternoon tea here is outrageously expensive, and its not something you have to experience multiple times. That being said, I think everyone that visits Dubai should make an effort to have afternoon tea here once, as its an unforgettable experience.

The last course was a lychee and rose sorbet, along with Christmas cookies.
