ALBUM FACTS

Genre: Rock

From day one, Linkin Park built the band upon the premise of fusing all of their favorite styles ofDescription:music-as disparate as they might be-into one signature sound. Fast-forward 12 years to and theLIVING THINGSsame six players have not only developed new tools to make that philosophy a reality, but they're finally comfortableembracing-and coalescing-every aspect of their career. OK, maybe not the XXL work shirts and neon hair dye of theearly days. But in their music, the band has spent the past year reinventing how to tastefully bridge the gap betweenall the musical destinations they've visited, and how to marry all the ideas they've accumulated. And as LIVING

began taking shape, for the first time Linkin Park was eager to use every tool in their toolbox.THINGS

With each song, they flexed their expertise with both cutting-edge and classic gear, and they infused their vocals withan honest, thrilling enthusiasm; they picked apart their own ideas of what defines a song, and what defines LinkinPark. is a personal album, centered on human emotions and relationships implied by the title. It isLIVING THINGSinformed by and built upon all previous Linkin Park albums, while still pushing the band's sound into new territory. It'sspirited, energetic, daring and unafraid to hybridize the past, present and future. It's absolute proof to a radical theorysix musicians have devoted their lives to testing.

ALBUM FACTS

Genre: Country

"El Rio" is Frankie Ballard's third studio album release. On the heels of his breakthrough sophomoreDescription:album "Sunshine & Whiskey", which featured 3 #1 singles and 2 gold certified tracks, Frankie returns with this amazingcollection of songs, mostly recorded at a remote Texas studio on the Mexican border. El Rio is as close to "live in thestudio" as an album can be, and the idea of a band all creating it together is the central theme of the project. The firstsingle "It All Started With A Beer" is already Top 20 at country radio, and looks to be Frankie's next #1.

ARTIST & INFO

Hometown: Battle Creek, MI

Hailing from Battle Creek, MI, Frankie Ballard may be a newcomer to Nashville, but his edgy, country rock sounds likethe work of someone deeply at home in Music City. The fleet-fingered Ballard got his start singing Elvis songs with hisdad at the age of five and jokes that he shot his first music video in the family basement when he was seven.Obsessed with baseball and intent on becoming a professional athlete, Ballard didn't learn to play guitar until he was18, but once he did, it was full-steam ahead as he locked himself in his room for hours a day to master the instrument. He began playing in blues bands, juggling weeknight gigs with his weekend college baseball commitments. Eventually, music won out, and in the summer of 2008, Ballard won Kenny Chesney's "Next Big Star" regional competition inMichigan. He opened for Chesney at the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids and at Ford Field in Detroit, which led to apublishing deal with Sony ATV, and a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records.

ARTIST & INFO

Hometown: Seattle, WA Lonnie AngleBand Members:Thomas Dutton

A livewire siren with a theater background, Lonnie Angle, and a multi-instrumentalist with a decade in a major labelband under his belt, Thomas Dutton, team up to create something larger than themselves. That is Cardiknox in anutshell. The two Seattle natives first met in 2010. Thomas was in the midst of transforming Razia's Shadow: AMusical-an album by his previous band Forgive Durden-into an off-Broadway stage production. Lonnie came onboardto help, and they picked up and moved to the Big Apple together. Following a year of development, the show sold outtwo nights at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater in New York City. Despite the success, Lonnie and Thomas agreed itwas time to collectively pursue a new muse.Along the way, they've become an impressive live presence. In addition to tours with the likes of Betty Who, Cardiknoxcaptivated audiences everywhere from Lollapalooza and Sasquatch to Reading and Leeds, Rock en Seine,Pukkelpop, and Firefly. Their signature musical pastiche also becomes reflected in the album cover by renownedmuralist Tristan Eaton who captured the life of the sonic landscape in a stunning portrait of Lonnie. Cardiknox welcomeeverybody to share in their dream. "I want people to walk away from the music feeling hopeful," Lonnie leaves off. "Themusic is emotional and comes from a real place. It's not just a catchy hook-there's meaning behind it."

Nonesuch releases , a new studio album by legendary New Orleans musician Description: American Tunes Allen, on June 10, 2016. Toussaint had just completed the album when he passed away in November of lastToussaint

year during a European tour. Recording took place at two sets of sessions with producer Joe Henry: solo piano atToussaint's New Orleans home studio in 2013, and with the rhythm section of Jay Bellerose and David Piltch—joinedby guests Bill Frisell, Charles Lloyd, Greg Leisz, Rhiannon Giddens, and Van Dyke Parks—in Los Angeles in October2015. The album comprises solo performances of Professor Longhair tunes and band arrangements of songs byToussaint, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Paul Simon, and others.

Allen Toussaint's work as composer, producer, arranger, and performer, especially in the 1960s and '70s, helpedshape the sound of R&B, soul, and funk as we know it today. He collaborated memorably with artists ranging from LeeDorsey and Ernie K. Doe to the Pointer Sisters and Labelle, from the Meters and Dr. John to the Band and PaulMcCartney. The recently said, "In Mr. Toussaint's long career as songwriter, arranger and producerNew York Timeshe has honed a piano style that's supportive and allusive; a little trill or tremolo sums up all the splashy joys of NewOrleans patriarchs like Professor Longhair and James Booker, and a syncopated chord under right-hand octavessummons gospel. Mr. Toussaint has the two-fisted, rippling vocabulary of the city's piano legacy, but he uses it indapper ways."

Toussaint's children, Alison Toussaint-LeBeaux and Clarence Reginald Toussaint, who have long served as theirfather's managers, said of the album, "Our father approached this project with great care andAmerican Tunesunderstanding of the songs selected and paid true homage to Professor Longhair, his musical hero. He wanted tobring as much of the Toussaint touch as he could to these wonderful classics."

Nonesuch previously released in 2009. Also produced by Henry, the record includes songs byThe Bright Mississippijazz greats such as Sidney Bechet, Jelly Roll Morton, Django Reinhardt, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, and BillyStrayhorn. The album received tremendous critical praise, with the saying it "couldn't sound more likeBoston GlobeNew Orleans. (Toussaint) revisits jazz classics … and takes them for a stroll through Preservation Hall, imbuing hisown funky brand of pop-song charisma. The results are coolly sophisticated, an unfussy, mostly instrumental set ofslink-and-slide joints shot through with a harmonic imagination that turns even a traditional hymn into an after-hoursswing … Toussaint's musical soul guides all, making the classics sound like his own."

That project indirectly grew from Toussaint's contributions to , the benefit album that NonesuchOur New Orleansreleased in fall 2005 to aid hurricane victims in the wake of the Katrina disaster. That collection opens with a version of"Yes We Can Can," the Toussaint song the Pointer Sisters made famous, newly recorded with producer Joe Henry, and it included a solo piano piece, "Tipitina and Me," co-written by Toussaint in tribute to Professor Longhair.

Joe Henry had first worked with Toussaint when he invited the pianist to join the sessions for , aI Believe to My Soulstudio convocation of mature R&B stars. Henry subsequently acted as producer on Toussaint's post-Katrinacollaboration with Elvis Costello, . He describes the most recent sessions: "I have been workingThe River in Reversewith Allen Toussaint—under his spell and subject to his influence—for a full decade now. He was a quiet radical,musically-speaking, and a prince of great humility."

ARTIST & INFO

Hank Williams' career was brief and incendiary. Most of those fortunate enough to have seen him in concert say thathe was a captivating performer. Now, sixty years after his passing, we finally get a sense of Hank Williams onstage, adding another dimension to our scant knowledge of him. Still popular today, he's a giant in American music.

The performances heard here were recorded on acetate discs (meant to be played onlyDESTINED TO SURVIVE:once or twice) that were shelved in 1951, and they gradually faded from common memory. In the 1970s the acetateswere saved from the trash by a WSM employee and eventually given to Hank’s daughter, Jett. On behalf of the estate,Jett fought an eight-year battle to establish ownership, finally winning the right to release these recordings inpartnership with Time Life.

Rock's longest, strangest trip, Grateful Dead, was the psychedelic era's most beloved musical ambassadors as well asits most enduring survivors. They spread their message of peace, love, and mind-expansion across the globethroughout three decades. The group had popular music's most fervent and celebrated fan following - the DeadHeads, whose numbers and devotion were legendary in their own right. Grateful Dead was the ultimate cult band,

creating a self-styled universe all their own. The Dead became superstars solely on their own terms as tie-dyed piedpipers whose epic, free-form live shows were rites of passage for an extended family of listeners who knew no culturalboundaries. (via AllMusic)

ALBUM FACTS

Genre: Rock

Hootenanny is the place where the Replacements began to branch out from the breakneck punk thatDescription:characterized their first two records. The brilliant thing about Hootenanny is that it teeters at the brink of maturity butnever makes the dive into that deep pool. Paul Westerberg nevertheless dips a toe into those murky waters with "ColorMe Impressed," as good an angst-ridden rocker as he would ever write, and the heartbroken "Within Your Reach,"which presented a break from the Replacements' past in its slower tempo. It lurches to life with the folk piss-take"Hootenanny" before spinning out of control with "Run It," a piece of faux-core harder and funnier than anything onStink. It continues to bounce from extreme to extreme, stopping for a Beatles parody on "Mr. Whirly" and theinstrumental "Buck Hill".

ALBUM FACTS

Genre: Rock

Let It Be looms large among '80s rock albums, generally regarded as one of the greatest records of theDescription:decade. Nothing about Let It Be is clean; it's all a ragged mess, careening wildly from dirty jokes to wounded ballads, from utter throwaways to songs haunting in their power. This blend of bluster and vulnerability is why theReplacements were perhaps the most beloved band of their era, as they captured all the chaos and confusion ofcoming of age in the midst of Reaganomics, and Let It Be is nothing if not a coming-of-age album, perched preciselybetween adolescence and adulthood. There's just enough angst and tastelessness to have the album speak toteenagers of all generations and just enough complicated emotion to make this music resonate with listeners long pastthose awkward years, whether they grew up with this album or not.

ALBUM FACTS

Part of the Replacements' appeal always was that they didn't quite fit into any tidy category. NowhereDescription:was that truer than on their 1981 debut, Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash. They didn't fit anywhere withinAmerican punk, but there's no defiance here; there's a celebration of who and what they are that's genuinely, infectiously guileless. It may not quite sound like any other American punk record but Sorry Ma, Forgot to Take Out theTrash is one of the best LPs the entire scene produced in the early '80s.

ALBUM FACTS

Genre: Rock

Stink seemed more like a hardcore record: the band approximated a hardcore rave-up at the end of theDescription:white blooze parody "White and Lazy," and Paul Westerberg's songs bristled with anger against all manner ofmiddle-class irritants, as he spit vitriol at his "God Damn Job" and told school to go f*ck itself. Such a sudden burst ofanger could almost seem parodic, especially with such snide jokes as the Frère Jacques chorus of "Gimme Noise," ifthe Replacements didn't sound so lethal: they're hard and merciless, never stopping for air.

ALBUM FACTS

There's a certain amount of disagreement among Velvet Underground scholars regarding whether or notDescription:this album, recorded by Andy Warhol associate and longtime fan Brigid Polk on a portable cassette recorder onAugust 23, 1970, does in fact document Lou Reed's final appearance with the VU. Historical merit seems to be morethe issue than high fidelity.

ARTIST & INFO

Hometown: New York City, NY Sterling Morrison, Lou Reed, Doug Yule, Billy Yule Band Members:

Few rock groups can claim to have broken so much new territory, and maintain such consistent brilliance on record, asthe Velvet Underground during their brief lifespan. The mid- to late '60s was an era of explosive growth andexperimentation in rock, but the Velvets' innovations -- which blended the energy of rock with the sonic adventurism ofthe avant-garde, and introduced a new degree of social realism and sexual kinkiness into rock lyrics -- were tooabrasive for the mainstream to handle. During their time, the group experienced little commercial success; though theywere hugely appreciated by a cult audience and some critics, the larger public treated them with indifference or,occasionally, scorn. The Velvets' music was too important to languish in obscurity, though; their cult only grew largerand larger in the years following their demise, and continued to mushroom through the years. By the 1980s, they wereacknowledged not just as one of the most important rock bands of the '60s, but one of the best of all time, and onewhose immense significance cannot be measured by their relatively modest sales.

ARTIST & INFO

BOB HOPE: The greatest entertainer of the 20th century, moved from Broadway to radio to movies to television aseasily as a pro golfer sinking a two-foot putt. Bob and TV were the perfect couple. His variety and Christmas specialsfor NBC spanned five decades, from President Truman to Clinton. But it was Bob’s lifelong dedication to America’stroops that made him especially beloved. Bob spent nearly half of his 100 Christmases heading up USO shows as aglobetrotting Santa Claus with a golf club, a sackful of jokes, and an airplane filled with stars. They performed onbattleships and battlefields, sometimes accompanied by the sound of fighter jets overhead. Hope’s missions wereoften dangerous, his schedule brutal, yet he never failed to leave his audiences laughing all the way.

GOOD TIMES! features all three surviving band members - Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and PeterDescription:Tork. The unmistakable voice of the late Davy Jones is also included with a vintage vocal featured on one song. To producethe new album, the band found the perfect musical co-conspirator in Grammy® and Emmy®-winning songwriter AdamSchlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne, Ivy). Much like The Monkees' early albums, GOOD TIMES! features tracks written specifically for the band by some of themusic world's most gifted songwriters, including Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), AndyPartridge (XTC), and Zach Rogue (Rogue Wave) as well as a song co-written by Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller. The album also includes songwriting contributions by Nesmith ("I Know What I Know") and Tork as well as producerSchlesinger. To help bring the anniversary full circle, The Monkees completed songs for GOOD TIMES! that were originallyrecorded and written for the group during the 60s, including "Love To Love" by Neil Diamond, which features a vintagevocal by Jones. Harry Nilsson wrote the title track "Good Times!" which he recorded at a session with Nesmith inJanuary 1968. The production was never completed, so the band returned to the original session tape (featuringNilsson's guide vocal) and have created a duet with his close friend Dolenz. "Good Times!" will mark the first timeDolenz and Nilsson have sung together since Dolenz' May 1973 single "Daybreak." Other vintage 1960's tracksincluded on GOOD TIMES! feature L.A.'s famed "Wrecking Crew" of session musicians.
