    TEACHING METHODOLOGYSubjects focused onProduct Development

Prof. ass. Jana Gavačová, Prof. Miroslav Vereš

  • Teaching trends at STU generallyTeaching trends at STU generally

    • Reduction of the time spent for attending classes• Individual assignments• Team assignments• Cooperation with the industry• Possibilities to participate on research• Strong theoretical basic during lectures

The main advantage:Experts using theoretical knowledge with

potent ability to adapt to practical environment.

  • Product Development at the Department of transport technology and designProduct Development at the Department of transport technology and design

    • Design in transport technology• Computer aided design• Semester project I., Semester project II.• Final theses

  • COURSE:DESIGN IN TRANSPORT TECHNOLOGY

Students achieve detailed knowledge of theprinciples of the product development in theautomotive and mobile working machine industrywith focus on power transmission mechanisms.

  • COURSE:COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN

Advanced design methodology - modeling partsor assemblies of machines using the higher CADsystem with the application of electronic databasefeatures. Knowledge based on cooperation ofmathematics and practical use of CAD.

  • This metod is used due to the large number of students. The most effective strategies are those, which

allow interaction, discussion, exchange of views andparticipation on a research of real projects.

    How to do it?

Lectures at our faculty are obligatory according to thestudy regulations, but in our opinion it is wrong –presence of students must be ensured by lecturer'spersonality and by positive motivation for students.

    LECTURES

  • LECTURE METHODOLOGYLECTURE METHODOLOGY

Positive motivationa) importance of the knowledge acquired during

lectures to find a job.Slovakia is a world leader in the production of

automobiles (1 million cars produced per year), thethousands of free work places in this area are also inneighboring countries.

  • LECTURE METHODOLOGYLECTURE METHODOLOGY

Positive motivationb) obtain of the original knowledge – our workplace

must be unique somehow. Our institute has top equipped laboratory for

generative design, which is a new approach to cardesign. We are also on the top in the area of gearingtheory knowledge what is represented by originalgeneralized theory of plane gearing. Both theseunique research areas are fully incorporated into theteaching content.

  • LECTURE METHODOLOGYLECTURE METHODOLOGY

Positive motivationc) exam is not the main goal of the course, it is

possible to pass also without the exam accordingto other students' activities.

Points collection is possible with activestudents participating on the lecture (interaction, discussion, exchange of views). Lecturer plays notonly the role of teacher but also the function ofmoderator, opponent and evaluator.

  • LECTURE METHODOLOGYLECTURE METHODOLOGY

During the term, lecturer formulate the problemsin the suitable moments. Students can solve theseproblems during the period of term and they getpoints to pass the course. These tasks are notsimple to solve – lecturer here highlights thatstudents must know more than teacher becauseotherwise no progress in the studied issues will beensured.

The positive motivation here is that questionsasked by the lecturer must be interesting forstudents.

  • There are two kinds of seminars:1. Theoretical seminars – repetition and practice the theory

acquired during lectures. Students work together on thesimple tasks.

    2. Excercises in the CAD laboratory – application of thetheory to the particular tasks (we use CATIA V5 formodeling, kinematics and strength analysis of virtualmodels). Each student works independently andpresents his work to teacher.

Positive motivation here is that every student'sactivity is noticed by the teacher and awarded by points.

  • PASS THE COURSE

What is important?Added motivation – student is permanently

informed about his point account – he knows ifhe has enough points to pass the course. If he has not collected enough points in time, hemust pass regular exam.

To avoid the stress during solving tasks ofthe test, student may use any literature andlecture notes.

  • PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT METHODS

TRIZ, ARIZ as systematic approach for breakthroughsolutions of tough-nut problems based on finding a creativesolution in case there is one.

PARAMETRIC and VARIANT DESIGN- The most widely used methods in develoment of vehicles -CATIA system is already equipped with such operations.

GENERATIVE DESIGN METOD- Fully new approach to new product development – it is anexcellent area for scientific work.

Our curriculums follow the new trends in field of productdevelopment and thus are partially scientific which helpsstudents to be prepared for tasks in practice.

  • FUTURE TRENDS

Generative design method is useful for students, who study problematics of a car design. We organizelectures for such students focused on problemsassociated with creation of correct shape solutions interms of its mechanical and manufacturingproperties.

Generative design is a new way of thinking in thefield of Product Development. Operations in CAD systemprovide optimization of solution. The model is not just aquantitative representation. This approach is veryimportant for creating an intelligent model, which will besurely used in the future.
