Key words : vocabulary, children’s rhymes.

Elementary school students are expected to master enough vocabulary to

support their English skills to the next level. When the students have known

enough vocabulary, it will help them to make their learning process go easier with

the maximum result. However, the fact shows that many students have difficulties

to master their English vocabulary. Children’s rhymes is one of the teaching

media that can make the students more interested and motivated.

The purpose of this research is to find out whether there is a significant

difference of the English vocabulary mastery of the fourth grade students of SD

IT Luqman Al Hakim Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 taught without and

by using Children’s rhymes.

The subject of the research is the fourth grade students of SD IT Luqman

Al Hakim Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 with the number of students 44.

The design of this research is experimental research with control group without

using pretest.

The result of the research showed that the mastery of English vocabulary

of the English vocabulary mastery of the fourth grade students of SD IT Luqman

Al Hakim Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 taught by using Children’s

rhymes is categorized excellent. The score of mean and standard deviation are

83.590 and 4.68. Meanwhile, the mastery of the English vocabulary mastery of

the fourth grade students of SD IT Luqman Al Hakim Kudus in the academic year

2012/2013 taught without using Children’s rhymes is categorized good. The score

of mean and standard deviation are 71.318 and 14.672. The calculation of t-test

gets result 3.757 and in the level of significant 0.05 and the degree of freedom (df)

42 which is gained (N1 - N2) - 2, t-table is 2.021. It is concluded that there is a

significant difference between the mastery of English vocabulary of the English

vocabulary mastery of the fourth grade students of SD IT Luqman Al Hakim

Kudus in the academic year 2012/2013 taught without and by using Children’s

rhymes.

Considering the process and the results of this research, I suggest that the

teacher should use an interesting media in teaching English, especially in the

English vocabulary mastery. One of them is Children’s rhymes as an alternative

media in teaching English vocabulary.

Siswa SD diharapkan dapat menguasai kosakata yang cukup untuk

mendukung kemampuan bahasa Inggris mereka ke tingkat berikutnya. Ketika

siswa telah mengetahui kosakata yang cukup, hal ini akan membantu proses

belajar mereka menjadi lebih mudah dengan hasil yang maksimal. Namun, fakta

menunjukkan bahwa banyak siswa mengalami kesulitan untuk menguasai

kosakata bahasa Inggris mereka. Rima anak-anak merupakan salah satu media

pengajaran yang dapat membuat siswa lebih tertarik dan termotivasi.

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah ada perbedaan

yang signifikan pada penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa kelas empat SD

IT Luqman Al Hakim Kudus dalam tahun akademik 2012/2013 diantara kelas

yang diajarkan dengan menggunakan rima anak-anak dan yang tidak.

Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas empat SD IT Luqman Al

Hakim Kudus dalam tahun akademik 2012/2013 dengan jumlah siswa 44. Desain

penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimental dengan menggunakan kontrol group

dan tampa menggunakan tes awal.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris

siswa kelas empat SD IT Luqman Al Hakim Kudus dalam tahun akademik

2012/2013 diajarkan dengan rima anak-anak dikategorikan sempurna. Nilai rata-

rata dan standar deviasi adalah 83.590 dan 4.68. Sementara itu, penguasaan

kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa kelas empat SD IT Luqman Al Hakim Kudus

dalam tahun akademik 2012/2013 diajarkan tanpa menggunakan rima anak-anak

dikategorikan baik. Nilai rata-rata dan standar deviasi adalah 71.318 dan 14.672.

Penghitungan t-test mendapatkan hasil 3.757 dan tingkat signifikan 0.05 dan

derajat kebebasan (df) 42 yang diperoleh dari (N1 - N2) - 2, t-tabel adalah 20.21.

Hal ini menyimpulkan bahwa ada perbedaan yang signifikan pada penguasaan

kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa kelas empat SD IT Luqman Al Hakim Kudus

dalam tahun akademik 2012/2013 diantara kelas yang diajarkan dengan

menggunakan rima anak-anak dan yang tidak.

Mengingat proses dan hasil penelitian ini, saya menyarankan bahwa guru

harus menggunakan media yang menarik dalam mengajar bahasa Inggris,

terutama dalam penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris. Salah satunya adalah rima

anak-anak sebagai media alternatif dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris.
