Atchison County SheriffDennis Martin feels thathe’s always had a call onhis life to serve the public. He initially answered byworking as an EMT for the

Atchison-Holt AmbulanceDistrict. Then in 1989, hewas asked to go to work as areserve officer for the TarkioPolice Department and he

jumped at the chance.“It was another oppor-

tunity. Not being cliché, Ibelieve it was a God-givenopportunity. It was whereI needed to be at that timein my life,” he said, addingthat, in addition to workingpart-time as a reserve, he at-tended a basic 120-hour lawenforcement academy whilecontinuing to work full-timeas an EMT.

Then one day in late 1991or early 1992, while stand-ing in the barn washingdown the ambulance, he wasapproached by two womenfrom the Atchison County

Democratic Committee ask-ing if he’d consider runningfor sheriff. Since it wasn’tthe first - or last - time hewas asked that question, hedecided to seriously considerhow he should respond. Heand his wife, Phyllis, talkedabout it, prayed about it andfinally determined that if hewasn’t supposed to be sher-iff, the public wouldn’t votehim into office.

He won the election andtook office at one minute af-ter midnight on January 1,1993 in the middle of a bliz-

zard.“I was driving a 1970

Mercury four-door sedan atthe time and that becamemy patrol vehicle. I had ared light on the dash anda hand unit and that, liter-ally, was how I began,” helaughed. It wasn’t until mid-1995 that he was even reim-bursed for all the businessmiles he drove. Previously,he received mileage only forcivil process or when he re-sponded to calls for service.

Local couple witnesses history in

the making at Belmont StakesIt’s very rare that a race

horse wins the Triple Crown- the Kentucky Derby, thePreakness, and the BelmontStakes - and rarer still thatwe locals know someone whowas able to witness it, andeven rarer still that it WAS

some locals who witnessedit. Steve and Marvetta Volk-er were in New York when

American Pharaoh won theBelmont Stakes on June 6,2015, clinching the TripleCrown win. It’s been 37years since the last horse,

Affirmed, won the glory. The Volkers planned the

trip back in February, neverimagining they’d get to wit-ness history in the making.“The roar of the crowd wasdeafening when AmericanPharaoh crossed the finishline,” commented Marvetta.

“We still can’t believewe were part of allthe excitement. I pur-chased four $2 ticketsand did not cash themin. I’m saving them formy scrapbook.”
