Letter From the President of Tarkio College

Alums, Friends and SupportersThe Tarkio College Board of

Directors has made the bold move tosecure certification as an institution ofhigher education from the State ofMissouri. This is the first step in re-acquiring full status as an accreditedcollege. We have completed theapplication requirements, with the helpof our education consultant, and lookforward to the scheduling of visits bythe Department of Higher Education. The process is time consuming and thework extensive, but in the end we willonce again “Set Fire”!

In addition to the professionalcontinuing education programs, whichare scheduled to begin this year,Tarkio College is planning to offer anAssociate Degree in Science (A.S.) inPublic Service, with three areas ofspecialization: Public Administration,Health Care Management and PublicSafety. Classes will be offered at thebeginning of the first semester aftersecuring certification from the State ofMissouri. The process of offering atwo year academic degree requirescertification by the State of Missouriand, eventually, accreditation by anational accreditation organization.Other offerings are underconsideration, but will not be decidedupon until after a major survey of theregions high schools has beenconducted by Tarkio College. Planshad been made for a majorsymposium which would havebrought, at least, 50 school districtstogether to discuss the highereducation needs of students in rural

communities. It became evident that ahigh level of participation was goingto be difficult to achieve due todiverse schedules at each district. Toovercome this obstacle and achievethe goal of a high level of input theBoard of Directors directed thePresident and the educationalconsultant to conduct an extensivesurvey of educational needs directlywith the superintendent and guidancecounselor of each of the schooldistricts, at their school and on theirschedule. In this manner the Boardanticipates the standardizedinformation gathered will be in greaterdepth. Once the data is compiled andanalyzed, decisions will be made onthe degree offerings to be added to thecatalog.

These are exciting times forTarkio College. A cadre of loyal anddedicated alums have worked togetherto: reactivate the corporation, establish a mission and purpose, reapply for charitable status with theIRS, apply for certification as anacademic institution with the State ofMissouri, build and implement aprofessional continuing educationprogram, resurrect and refurbishRankin Hall, and research and securefunds from estates, trusts andfoundations. Join us! Become anactive member of the Tarkio CollegeAlumni Association and become apart of the future for Tarkio College.
