Representative Forum, Global Youth Day, UN Millennium Development Goal activities, a free Easy Card for public transportation and much more, waiting for your participation and exploration.

2012 JCI World Congress Marches to the Beat of A New DrumDelegates from across the globe gathered in Taipei last night to celebrate the power of positive change at this year’s World Congress.

The 2012 JCI World Congress Opening Ceremony rocked with passionate crowds of young active citizens cheering with their fellow JCI members. The evening began with a dazzling performance from the Chio-tian Folk Drums and Arts Troupe encouraging the audience to chant and celebrate!

This enthusiastic, fun opening was followed by the colorful parade of 2012 JCI National Presidents and Chief Delegates from each country represented at Congress. Some National Presidents were even accompanied by their spouse or children to represent their country at JCI’s largest annual event. The wide variety of national outfits showcased the diverse culture of each JCI country. Also introduced were the JCI Past Presidents, the 2012 JCI Vice Presidents and the 2012 JCI Executive Committee. Last but not least, 2012 JCI President Bertolt Daems took the stage to greet all of the delegates who have traveled to Taipei for this week-long adventure.

Following the parade, MINta started a sand animation performance showcasing this traditional art of Taiwan. After the peaceful and inspiring performance, 2012 National President of JCI Taiwan Sean Y. H. Chang welcomed the delegates to his home country.

Wu Den-Yih, Vice President of Taiwan (ROC) then took the stage to extend his greetings to all delegates. Along with Taipei City Major Hau Ling-Bin, Vice President Wu encouraged delegates to explore the beautiful city and enjoy the World Congress.

Shortly after, JCI President Bertolt Daems joined National President Chang on the stage to recognize what a great year 2012 has been for JCI Organization’s around the world. President Daems applauded each JCI member’s commitment to positive change and challenged every delegate to consider how they can advance positive change at this World Congress.

“I know we can all look at the world and see its beauty, but in my travels, I have seen many struggles,” said President Daems. “As young active citizens, we must work together to turn these struggles into successes and build a brighter future.”

He then welcomed Congress Organizing Committee Chairman Chris Chen to the stage to join National President Chang and Congress Chairperson Neil Yang to declare the Congress open.

Delegates, energized from the Diabolo Dance Theater yo-yo performance, concluded the Opening Ceremony and headed to the Welcome Night party also located in the Taipei Arena.

JCI First Timers Walk the Red CarpetGreeted by JCI President Bertolt Daems, Immediate Past President Kentaro Harada and enthusiastic JCI Senators, the First Timers felt welcomed and excited about their first World Congress. 2012 JCI Vice President Robbert Van Waart, 2012 JCI Vice President Lizby Casas-Forero and 2012 JCI Vice President Takor Takor used their bright personalities to tell the attendees all about their upcoming Congress adventure.

Each First Timer received a form with a variety of questions and facts to fill out as they attend all the events, ceremonies and seminars over the course of the week. This introductory session to Congress explains what each event is, where, what time they are and even what they should wear. As they go with their fellow members to these events, they can answer questions and get signatures for their questionnaire together. Each First Timer who completes their questionnaire will be entered into a drawing to win the JCI First Timer award and receive a free registration for the 2013 JCI World Congress in Rio de Janeiro! Good luck to all JCI First Timers and see you in Rio!

The National Presidents meetings allowed the leaders from each Area to learn and grow as they discussed the strengths, opportunities, successes and challenges from each of their National Organizations. Local projects and programs were presented as each National President shared their stories from 2012.

Each Area Development Council attended the National Presidents’ Meetings to present the 2013 development plan and report their successes from 2012. With the 2013 JCI Area Conferences coming up in the next few months, the Conference Directors gave their event updates. The National Presidents can now bring this information back to their countries, encouraging members to attend.

The Africa and the Middle East meeting welcomed two new fully affiliated National Organizations, JCI Jordan and JCI Lesotho. Exciting news in 2013 includes the first ever organization of a National Presidents Meeting on location in their area. It will take place in Accra, Ghana.

In the Asia-Pacific National President’s meeting, they welcomed the JCI New Zealand delegation to their very first World Congress! Also, JCI Thailand has been working hard to revitalize their organization and sent delegates for the first time in two years.

In the Americas meeting, JCI Haiti talked about their US $52 in 52 weeks campaign to raise money to build a community center. All the Americas National Presidents fully support this initiative and will spread the word this week at Congress to make sure their project is known around the world. The National President from JCI Colombia also discussed their plans for the Area Conference in 2014.

The European Presidents Meeting allowed all of the National Presidents some time to work on the three-year strategic plan for Europe. This plan guides each country to focus on four important areas for their projects; Active Citizenship, renewable energy, education and entrepreneurship.

The final discussion included this year’s World Congress and their important role as the key representative of their Organization. World Congress shines as a momentous time in a National President’s career as they embrace this opportunity to showcase their country to the world during a number of special ceremonies and meetings.

Positive thinking and excitement filled the room as the National Presidents’ meetings concluded, boosting their ability to create positive change in 2013.
