bike like a girl at Tahoe Donner This summer, the Tahoe Mountain Bike Like A Girl team will be

leading free afternoon rides just for women. Plan to meet in the parking lot at the Alder Creek Adventure Center at 5:15 p.m. and be ready to ride by 5:30 p.m. This is a great ride in the Euer Valley area for women of all ages and abilities. Don’t miss this opportunity to ride with a great group of ladies riding for a good cause. These rides are scheduled for June 13, August 9, August 23, and September 6. The June ride will have a special treat of being led by Katerina Nash and other local pro riders. (Donations to the Breast Cancer Fund, Bike Like A Girl, and Truckee Trails will be graciously accepted at all these rides.)

The national Bike Like A Girl team will be joining Tahoe Mountain Bike Like a Girl in leading two camps for girls of all ability levels. BikesOur bike fleet is stocked with a variety of Giant brand bikes

from road bikes, comfort bikes and hard tails to the latest full-suspension mountain bikes. We have a full array of options for families, including bikes for kids, trail-a-bikes and trailers for little ones. We sell and replace more than a third of our fleet each season, and this season’s new bikes are highlighted by more than 25 brand new Giant mountain bikes.

Due to popular demand, we carry several women’s bikes includ-ing the Giant Lust full-suspension mountain bike and the Giant Tempt front-suspension mountain bike. In addition to the always popular Giant Trance and Stance lines of men’s full-suspension mountain bikes, we also have a few other front suspension models, such as the Giant Talon, Revel, and ATX models.

We’ve also added Framed Minnesota series fat bikes to our rental fleet this year. These bikes do great on sand or snow, and are also a lot of fun just to ride the trails.

If you are thinking about buying a new bike, you can try out the latest models on an actual ride and not just in a parking lot. We can then order you a brand new bike and generally, we’ll have it ready for you in just a few days. All of our bike sales come with free 30-day and one year tune-ups. Our experienced bike mechan-ics are also happy to help get your own personal bike tuned up and ready for your next ride.

New Boat Launch ing Pol icy If the water level allows, we will resume trailered boat launching

at the marina. The information we gathered through the town hall meeting and survey process in February was invaluable in helping us understand what is important to our membership. The feedback was reviewed by staff and the board of directors during early 2016, result-ing in approval of new boat ramp rules, to be introduced this summer. Please review them below and call the Beach Club staff at 530-587-9460 if you have any questions. • Each member who plans on launching a trailered vessel at the

Beach Club will be required to register their vessel with Tahoe Donner. This entails providing the association with a copy of the vessel registration and proof of insurance for the vessel with Tahoe Donner named as additionally insured. This can be done in person at the Member Services office at Northwoods Club-house or via a link on our website. We will also provide on the link a release of liability waiver that must be signed by the vessel owner. Once registration has been completed and the waiver signed, you will receive a sticker to present to marina staff that

all these requirements have been met, and you will be permitted to launch. We encourage you to do this well in advance of the day you are planning to launch; however, you will be able to fulfill the registration requirements at the Beach Club as well.

• No launching vessels alone is permitted. You must have a mini-mum of two people to launch a vessel with one observing the ramp and launch zone for pedestrians and other hazards. Tahoe Donner staff cannot drive a vessel or the vehicle towing the trailer.

• We will have designated staff to direct traffic on the launch ramp. Please follow the directions of the boat ramp monitor at all times when launching a vessel.

• All members or guests on board your vessel will be charged a daily access fee even if they do not plan on using the Marina Beach Club property other than the boat ramp.

Again, please feel free to call the Beach Club manager, Ali Kovach, at 530-587-9460 with any questions concerning the changes to the launch policies.

P ickleball: the Fastest Grow ing Sport in Amer icaIt’s not a new sport, but it’s a new sensation sweeping the nation. Pickleball, a cross

between badminton, tennis and table tennis, is winning over the hearts of many athletes and we offer it right here at Tahoe Donner Tennis Center.

Unlike tennis, pickleball is played on a smaller court, extending 44 feet long by 20 feet wide, which is about one-fourth the size of a tennis court. Because of this shorter distance, it requires less mobility, giving people of all ages and abilities more opportunities to maintain a rally and react to opponent advances. But it’s quite possibly the social element is most enjoyable.

Every Saturday there is a Pickleball Clinic at 12 p.m. The cost is just $13 for members and $16 for their guests, and includes all equipment needed. Parties may also bring their own equipment or buy pickleball rackets and balls at the Tennis Center if desired.

SUMMER TRAIL SYSTEMThe Tahoe Donner summer trail system is

an expansive 60-mile system comprised of single-track and multi-use fire roads which take you through high alpine meadows and aspen groves and over craggy ridge tops affording breathtaking vistas of Castle Peak, Donner Lake and the Sierra Crest ridgeline. Whether you are an experienced equestrian, a new mountain biker or an avid trail runner, the Tahoe Donner summer trail system has a piece of trail just for you. Join us this summer to explore your backyard, refresh in the serenity of the mountains and get inspiration from the beautiful surroundings of Tahoe Donner. Contact us at 530-582-9672 or email us with any questions at [email protected].

TRA IL ET IQUETTE AND SAFETYHiking, biking or horseback riding on Tahoe

Donner’s trails is a wonderful way to enjoy the great outdoors. With the increasing popularity of these outdoor activities, the number of encounters with other trail enthusiasts is also increasing, so we all need to do our best to be respectful, patient and courteous to others. By following the guidelines below, we can all have a safer and more enjoyable outdoor experience.

ADV ICE FOR ALL TRA IL USERSRESPECT: It's a simple concept: if you offer

respect, you are more likely to receive it. We’re all out there to have a good time. Friendly respect will diminish negative encounters on the trail for all users.

COMMUNICATION: Let folks know you’re there — before you’re there. Do your best to let your fellow trail users know you’re coming. A friendly greeting is a good method.

YIELD APPROPRIATELY: Anticipate other trail users as you ride around corners. Bicyclists should yield to hikers and equestrians. Step downhill and off trail to let them pass. Bicyclists traveling downhill should yield to ones headed uphill. In general, strive to make each pass a safe and courteous one.

ADVICE FOR HIKERS AND BIKERSWhen hikers or mountain bikers encounter

horses on the trail, they should step off the trail on the downhill side, and talk to the rider and the animal (this lets the horse know you are a person). Keep talking in a calm voice as the animal passes.

If you approach a horse from behind it’s critical that you announce yourself loudly but

36 | tahoedonner.com

BE INFORMED: It’s YOUR responsibility to be in the know. Questions about where to ride, trail conditions, outdoor ethics and association regulations are important to know before you head out on the trails. If you have further questions, please contact the trails manager at 530-582-9672 or [email protected]. You may also contact Member Services at 530-587-9400 or [email protected].

Truckee Day Ne ighborhood CleanupJUNE 4, 8 A.M.

Keep Truckee beautiful by joining your friends and neighbors in this town-wide cleanup. Sponsored by the Truckee Donner Public Utility District and other local businesses, volunteers help pick up trash in the morning and then enjoy a community BBQ at Truckee Donner Recreation and Park District’s Regional Park. For more information, visit TruckeeDay.org.

Truckee R iver DayOCTOBER 16, VARIOUS TIMES

Spend the day restoring and protecting the Truckee River watershed. Organized by the Truckee River Watershed Council, this annual event offers volunteer opportunities at sites all across the region, including right here in Tahoe Donner. Previous projects have included meadow restoration, seed and sapling planting, mulching, erosion control efforts, and invasive weed surveys. After the day’s work, celebrate with other volunteers at the River Fair. Pre-registration opens in September. For more information, visit TruckeeRiverWC.org.

DON’T PLAY IN THE MUD: When trails are muddy or otherwise saturated with water, please refrain from using them until they have had a chance to dry out. This will allow the trail tread to remain narrow and stable and will also reduce erosion.

DO NOT CUT SWITCHBACKS OR TAKE SHORTCUTS: Enjoy where our trails take you; you won’t be disappointed. Cutting switchbacks and creating shortcuts damages plants and

disturbs soil, and contributes to erosion.

PICK UP AFTER YOUR PET: Dog waste along our trails is not only unsightly but can also hurt water quality and spread disease. Please grab a few of the dog litter bags found at most Tahoe Donner trailheads before hitting the trails, and please dispose of used litter bags in trailhead garbage containers. Per association rules, dogs need to be on a leash when on Tahoe Donner trails and at Tahoe Donner amenities.

GIVE WILDLIFE A BREAK: When encountering the abundance of wildlife throughout Tahoe Donner, please give them plenty of room. Control pets; do not allow dogs to chase or otherwise harass wildlife.

RESPECT YOUR NEIGHBORS: Please respect your neighbors by staying on Tahoe Donner property. Please do not wander onto or through your neighbors’ property to access trails.

HELP PROTECT OUR TRA ILS AND OPEN SPACES

calmly so you do not scare the animal. Let the rider know you’d like to pass at the next safe location. Do NOT ride up quickly on stock. It’s dangerous for you and the rider.

ADV ICE FOR HORSE R IDERSThough most hikers and bikers will yield the

right of way to horses, remember that some folks do not have experience with stock and may not react as expected. These encounters

are great opportunities to inform and educate other users with a friendly approach.

As a horse rider, you have a responsibility to manage your animal on the trail; it is not advised to bring horses unaccustomed to high-traffic or multi-use trails until they are more familiar with them. Also, remember to keep an eye out for other users in front of you, behind you and joining you at trail junctions.

With approval from its board of directors, Tahoe Donner Association is working with the Truckee Donner Land Trust and their partners, The Nature Conservancy and The Northern Sierra Partnership, to move forward with the acquisition of a 640-acre parcel of land located in Carpenter Valley and adjacent to Tahoe Donner’s existing 7,000-plus acres and Euer Valley.

The southern-most portion of the property, which includes Crabtree Canyon, is a gateway between Euer Valley and Carpenter Valley and will be owned and managed by Tahoe Donner. This is phase one of a much larger open space effort by Truckee Donner Land Trust, The Nature Conservancy, and The Northern Sierra Partnership. Further protection will be ensured by a permanent conservation easement held by the Truckee Donner Land Trust. The larger surrounding Carpenter Valley property, which has remained in private hands since the mid-19th century, is expected to be part of a Truckee Donner Land Trust purchase in 2017.

Our association’s vision as a desirable mountain community includes providing attractive and well-maintained facilities and amenities while maintaining accessible and healthy natural surroundings. The acquisition of the Crabtree parcel will also protect Tahoe Donner’s borders from future development.

In addition to preserving, protecting and maintaining Crabtree Canyon, this land parcel will also create new recreational opportunities for Tahoe Donner residents, allowing the Cross Country Ski Area to reopen 16 percent of our terrain and creating future opportunities for hiking, biking, and equestrian usage in accordance with Tahoe Donner’s comprehensive trails master plan and land use master plan.

For more information on this open space acquisition, see the May 2016 issue of Tahoe

Donner News, or tahoedonner.com. Additional information can be found at:

The Truckee Donner Land Trust preserves and protects scenic, historic and recreational lands with high natural resource values in the greater Truckee Donner region and manage recreational activities on these lands in a sustainable manner.

Tahoe Donner to Purchase and Preserve 640-Acre Crabtree Canyon

EXPLOR ING EUER VALLEY Tahoe Donner Association is now one

of the primary owners of Euer Valley after acquiring 482 acres there in 2012. There are several private properties which border Tahoe Donner; the Euer family’s land is actually surrounded by Tahoe Donner. We ask that you please respect our neighbors by staying on Tahoe Donner property.

Please observe the following guidelines while in Euer Valley:

• Motorized access to Euer Valley is forbid-den, except for Tahoe Donner staff.

• No camping or fires are allowed.

• The Euer family still owns 40 acres in the middle of the valley. Please avoid hiking near the homestead and its nearby build-ings.

Voluntary Summer Publ ic Tra il Pass Program

This program is a voluntary monetary contribution for public trail users. Its purpose is to recognize the financial commitment and trail maintenance efforts the association has made and continues to make on the 60+ miles of multi-use single-track and double-track summer trails.

For those who are not Tahoe Donner members, a suggested donation of $5 for adult and $2 for child daily use, or $30 for adult and $15 for child summer pass is encouraged, and is available for donation at Alder Creek Adventure Center, Bikeworks, and Member Services; online at our ShopTD site; and at select iron rangers at the major trailheads of Glacier Way, Teton Way and the Euer Valley gateway located at Alder Creek Adventure Center.

Trail access for members and guests of members is free.

T IPS FOR SAFETYBefore you leave for the trail, know where you are going. It is a good idea to tell a responsible person where you will be and when you expect to return.

Check the weather forecast so that you know what to expect on your adventure. Bring drinking water and stay hydrated.

Before you leave your vehicle, make sure all valuables are out of sight and your doors are locked.

• The valley is a “pack in/pack out” destina-tion. Please do your part to keep this a litter-free landscape.

• Respect the privacy of those who live adja-cent to Euer Valley, including at the end of Alder Creek Road. Sound levels should be kept low and vehicles should be parked on the street near the Alder Creek Adventure Center.

Summer trail maps available online or at major trailheads, Alder Creek Adventure Center, Trout Creek, and Member Services.
