PrESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Please join me in congratulating Courtney Murrell and Jim Stang on their election to the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors for three-year terms. Jim has served more than ably as a board member since his appointment to the board in January to serve out Suzy Knisley’s term. Having also served on the Finance Com-mittee, of which he was chairman for three years, and the General Plan Committee, Jim brings a wealth of knowledge and experience impacting the financial side of the organiza-tion. With a management background at Apple Computer and Coherent, Inc., Courtney has pledged to bring the family voice and per-spective to board decisions and debate. The election of Jim and Courtney ensures that we can continue the progress we have made in the past few years in keeping Tahoe Donner up to date and a first-class mountain community. The board looks forward to implementing the next five years of our General Plan.

The Fourth of July has come and gone and, as you well know if you were here for the week, it was a record-breaking month across the board! Truckee’s Fourth of July parade was another great success, with Tahoe Donner winning “Best in Show” for the fourth year in a row. This year’s parade theme was Celebrat-ing Truckee’s 150 Years since Establishment and 20 Years of Incorporation.

Thank goodness we expanded The Lodge Restaurant & Pub, as both it and Pizza on the Hill set record numbers in July. If you haven’t been to The Lodge to see the improvements, I encourage you to check out the new offerings on the gourmet menu online at tahoedonner.com/the-lodge.

Our summer events also added to the huge

success we experienced during the month; the Summer Concert on the Green, Euer Valley Member BBQ and Waterpalooza all had great turnouts. The next Waterpalooza is August 10 and 11; a not-to-be-missed two-day summer celebration of water-themed fun and games, a mega slip’n slide, and water rides.

On the subject of success, as with any service organization, the attitude and commit-ment brought to the task by staff makes all the difference between an enjoyable, safe expe-rience and something completely different. Cultivating the right attitude and commitment is critical. Nowhere is this truer than at our several high-volume amenities, during peak holiday periods, where the pace can directly impact the quality of service. It is in these situ-ations where the interdependence of our staff members is key to good customer service, and where Tahoe Donner really shines. So, please join me in recognizing and appreciating our excellent Tahoe Donner staff.

There’s still lot of summer left and the weather is predicted to be as nice as it has been the past month, so please get out and enjoy all of the exceptional Tahoe Donner amenities, activities, and events.

I hate to think of summer being over, but our outstanding staff is already working on our fall activities, including one of our biggest events of the year, the fourth annual Fall Festival in October.

I’m looking forward to the remainder of the summer, and hope to see you in Tahoe Donner soon.

FrOM THE GENErAL MANAGEr’S DESk

August is here and the summer is quickly slipping away. Have you spent enough time at your personal resort’s amenities and activities? Let’s face it, there are a lot of competing attractions and with school back in session by the middle of August, your enjoyment of these summer adventures will increase even more with great weather and ever-diminishing crowds. Whether you are living in Tahoe Donner or visiting your home, the challenge is often in managing the endless tasks that get in the way of having fun in the mountains. Simply talking about setting a goal to get out more isn’t enough. Establish a routine in order to develop a habit to take advantage of your mountain paradise. Routines, such as prepacking the car with beach gear every evening, dramatically increase the follow-through in actually going to the beach the next day. Here are a few recommendations on establishing some new routines to support getting out in the mountains.

Set TahoeDonner.com as the home page on your computer or mobile device. Forget about all those endless websites that keep you updated on random happenings of people you don’t know, the hourly ebb and flow of the stock market or other mass media distractions that keep you from what is really important; move those sites to your “favorites” directory. Seeing your resort community every time you open your browser with the endless activities that are in store for you and your family and friends will help remind you of the priority you have placed on your mountain retreat investment. Visit the webcams at the Beach Club Marina or Golf Course or open the calendar of events to see all the activities taking place on a regular basis as well as the special activities and events taking place for your enjoyment. Once you are out and about at the amenities, pick up a weekly activity guide to really maximize your play time and dining opportunities.

Remember the original social networking edicts – actually having live conversations with people. Select your activity around Tahoe Donner and make a routine of participating in that activity on a regular basis; Monday Night Bingo at Pizza on the Hill, kayaking or paddle boarding at the Beach Club Marina, enjoying dinner and drinks at your favorite neighborhood restaurant, The Lodge Restaurant & Pub, or a relaxing round of golf with friends. Another routine might be to take

your family or friends to the Euer Valley trailhead at the Equestrian Center and each first morning of a return visit, hike down into the beau-tiful Euer Valley along the new hike/bike trail. The options of creating a routine in the mountains are limitless, but the key is actually estab-lishing the habit that hopefully will develop into a family or personal tradition that complements your passion for being in the mountains. In short, make it a habit to enjoy your Tahoe Donner resort!

Finally, with regard to improving cell phone reception, we continue to work with American Tower Corporation (NYSE: AMT) to build a new cell tower near the top of the Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area Eagle Rock lift to better provide cell coverage for the entire community. American Tower has finalized a pine tree tower design and received Town of Truckee approval to continue with building permits. However, while American Tower has had interest from a number of cell compa-nies, at this point they have not secured an anchor tenant for the new tower, which is critical for them to move forward with construction of the tower this summer. As a result, the construction of this tower could possibly be delayed until the summer of 2014. This will allow American Tower time to solicit more firm commitments from the cell phone com-panies, including an anchor tenant, to rent space on this planned new tower for the community.

Lastly, the new Tahoe Donner trail maps are hot off the press. After considerable work by our membership trail advocate team and staff a new trail map has been developed which includes a better representa-tion of the many different hiking loops that exist within our expansive trail network. You may pick up your copy at Member Services, or any of the trailhead kiosks.

The fun starts at 5 p.m. and ends at approximately 7:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy an evening of wagon rides, games, crafts and a hearty outdoor dinner. Play a round of horseshoes or try throwing a rope at the roping station. Bring your camera and get pictures of the family at the fun photo stand and dress-up station. We have Old West and Renaissance costumes, props and backdrops for adults and children to enjoy.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite you’ll enjoy a dinner of flame-cooked hotdogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers that you can personalize with a variety of cheeses, bacon, chili, pineapple, avocado, sautéed mush-rooms and much more. Beans, salads, pies and of course campfire s’mores will round out the menu. Beer, wine and soft drinks are included. An assortment of games finishes off the evening.

The August 3 BBQ will have a Renaissance theme. Along with our usual fare we will add some kid-friendly Old World dishes to the menu. Proudly Announcing... Specializing in Tahoe Donner

properties since 1999 I have just started my own firm,

TAHOE TRUCKEE BROKERS and am offering the same trustworthy

service as the Broker-Owner.

It’s hard to believe how fast time flies when you are having fun (and keeping busy). 2013 is shaping up to be the most successful season at the golf course in many years and the season is far from over. In fact, as good as our turf conditions on the golf course have been this year, the course continues to improve each week. Come August and September, the golf course always hits its peak. So if you haven’t played the course lately, now is a great time to get out and enjoy mountain golf at its finest. As an incentive to encourage our members to play the course, and in honor of Reno’s annual “Hot August Nights,” we have decided to keep the fun going by offering a golf promotion that bridges the gap between Hot August Nights and the Labor Day weekend, a promotion we are calling Summer’s Last Blast. Starting on

August 12, Tahoe Donner members may invite guests after 2 p.m., Monday through Friday, and all golfers will be charged the discounted Tahoe Donner member twilight rate of $55, which includes a shared cart. Members who only have time for nine holes can bring a guest and play after 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, for only $30, including a shared cart. The Summer’s Last Blast golf promotion will run from Monday, August 12 through Friday, August 30, so don’t miss the opportunity to play one of Truckee’s finest golf courses at a very affordable rate. With bear incidents on the rise in the Tahoe/Truckee area, the Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) reminds residents to secure their food and trash at all times.

With an estimated 35,000 bears in California, it is not surprising that from Memorial Day to Labor Day, CDFW is inundated with calls about bears breaking into homes, rummaging through trash bins and raiding campsites. These bears are often labeled “nuisance” bears, but in real-ity, the bears are just doing what comes naturally to them, foraging for food.

“People are the root of the problem and it’s their behavior that we need to change,” said Marc Kenyon, CDFW’s Bear Program Manager. “By taking just a few precautions to secure food and trash, area visitors and residents can save themselves thousands of dollars in property damage, can help protect their families from injury and can save the lives of bears. Bears that become habituated to humans or conditioned to eating our food and trash often have to be killed.” TIPS FOr BEAr-PrOOFING yOur HOME Or rENTAL:

Bears have keen noses and can smell an easy meal from miles away.

They can easily tear a front door off its hinges if they smell food left out on the kitchen counter. To protect your family and property from bear break-ins follow these simple tips:

• Purchase and properly use a bear-proof garbage container.• Wait to put trash out until the morning of collection day.• Don’t leave trash, groceries, or pet food in your car.• Keep garbage cans clean and deodorize them with bleach or ammonia.• Keep barbecue grills clean and stored in a garage or shed when not in use.• Only provide bird feeders during November through March and make them inaccessible to bears.• Don’t leave any scented products outside, even non-food items such as suntan lotion, insect repellent, soap or candles.• Keep doors and windows closed and locked.• Consider installing motion-detector alarms, electric fencing or motion-activated sprinklers.• Harvest fruit off trees as soon as it is ripe, and promptly collect fruit that falls.• Securely block access to potential hibernation sites such as crawl spaces under decks and buildings.

FACTS ABOuT BLACk BEArS:

• The only species of bears in California are black bears. However, they do range in color from blonde to black, with cinnamon brown being the most common color.• There are an estimated 35,000 black bears in California.• Black bears will seek to avoid confrontation with humans. If encountered, always leave them an escape route.• Males are much larger than females and can weigh up to 500 pounds, although average weight is about 300 pounds.• Black bears can sprint up to 35 mph and they are strong swimmers and great tree climbers.• A typical wild bear diet consists of berries, plants, nuts, roots, honey, honeycomb, insects, larvae, carrion and small mammals.• As winter approaches, bears will forage for food up to 20 hours a day, storing enough fat to sustain them through hibernation. Bears often hibernate in large hollow trees 40 to 60 feet off the ground.• Bears that are accustomed to people can become too bold and lose their fear of humans.

had studied every foot of Tahoe Donner’s trail system. The best places, the finest views—I thought I knew them all. Then one morning I parked in an overlooked cul-de-sac, rounded a gate, and walked off to explore McGlashan

Springs and the Bucknam Tract.

There stood massive boulders, carried down from the summit by ancient glacial forces that ground through the valley creating the moraine that formed Donner Lake. Radiant green cedars spread through the forest. Even some majestic old growth trees with furrowed, cinna-mon trunks had here evaded logging and fire.

No, I did not know all the best places and all the finest views. But I keep returning to McGlashan Springs and the Bucknam Tract to dis-cover more of them.

McGlashan SpringsIt is easy to lose oneself within these parcels, but it is difficult to get

lost. They are perfect for wandering. While traipsing through the area

one fall day I happened across the 160-acre property’s namesake artesian wells. Beginning in the 1920s, the McGlashan Water Company encased the wells and constructed pipes to direct water from them into town.

The oldest, most westerly well is cased in metal, six others in concrete, and one, the most southerly, is no longer cased at all. Old pipes still pro-trude from the soil. Today the springs flow unrestrained, trickling down and weaving together in a lush riparian zone that finally resolves into a small creek.

Born in Wisconsin in 1847, Charles Fayette McGlashan, the water company’s founder, emigrated to California as a boy, and traveled to Truckee as a young man to serve as school superintendent.

Soon he was teaching himself law, conducting scientific research, writing a Donner Party history, editing the local newspaper, and immersing himself in the town’s life. Truckee’s untiring promoter, he had a prescient understanding of the important role that winter recre-ation would have for the area.

Not all his endeavors succeeded. His scheme to raise imported French frogs in local ponds ended quite badly, particularly for the frogs.

And not all his endeavors were admirable. Elected to the state assem-bly on a racist platform, he was also a leader in Truckee’s Caucasian League, an anti-Chinese vigilante committee. After arson and outright violence failed to drive the Chinese from town, he spearheaded boy-cotts and exclusions that proved so successful in starving them out that he toured the state promoting the “Truckee Method” of persecution.

Before these torments, Truckee’s Chinatown was second only to San Francisco’s. The Chinese had come to these mountains to build the railroad, and they stayed to work as merchants, lumbermen, and ice-men. Many also labored in the region’s charcoal industry, tending kilns around the clock for days on end. The remains of one such kiln can still be found at McGlashan Springs today.

Charles McGlashan died in 1931. Twelve years later the water com-pany sold the McGlashan Springs parcel to the Truckee Public Utility (Continued on p. 24)

District, who held title until selling it to Tahoe Donner in 2011.

The Bucknam Tract An avid and accomplished butterfly collector, Charles McGlashan

applied in 1914 to patent an entomological mount that he and his daugh-ters had invented. One of the application’s two witnesses was a man named William Alvin Bucknam. He owned the 240-acre property to the west of McGlashan Springs.

Compared to Charles McGlashan, W.A. Bucknam, born in Iowa in 1849, led a relatively quiet life. Listed as a merchant on 1890s voter registration rolls, he was commissioned as Truckee’s postmaster by President Grover Cleveland in 1896. Laura Bucknam, his wife, appar-ently preceded him in the position. He later became a director at the Champion Cold Stream Ice Company by the early 1900s.

With boulders, cedars, and thickets of tobacco brush and whitethorn,

the Bucknam Tract’s eastern end is similar to McGlashan Springs. Heading west, the geography tilts steeply until settling into a sheer 45-degree angle in an old, manzanita-filled fire scar with a panoramic view of Donner Lake.

In 1911 W.A. Bucknam divided this property into tiny lots, each mea-suring 25 by 80 feet, which he then sold to San Franciscans as tempo-rary refuge should another major earthquake strike. It was something of a swindle. If the next “big one” hit in the summer, then perhaps one could escape to Truckee and encamp on the property’s more gently sloping sections. But what if it struck in the winter? He did find some buyers, and still today about five acres of privately owned, undevelop-able lots remain within the property.

Ownership eventually passed to the Sinclair family, who gifted the land to Stanford University in 2005. Along with the town and the Truckee Donner Land Trust, Tahoe Donner purchased the property from Stanford in 2010.

At least one trail will traverse the Bucknam Tract’s difficult western end. The Donner Lake Rim Trail will enter the parcel at its northwest corner and then sweep down into and across McGlashan Springs. That trail should be the first of several throughout these properties. Once they are built, these areas will offer among the best short- and mid-

length hiking in Tahoe Donner. Construction will begin once trail alignments are approved and volunteers are mustered.

The SecretI have seen some remarkable sights in

McGlashan Springs and the Bucknam Tract. Elaborately undulating ice fields flowing from the springs in winter. A bounty of crimson snow plants. A mother bear, who had almost certainly denned nestled under a nearby boul-

der, leading her brood of two yearlings and a dawdling roly-poly cub to water. Startling and rare Washington lilies that sphinx moths pollinate at dusk.

As I walked back that first morning I wondered if I should tell anyone of what I had found. Perhaps this was something best kept to myself, to be whispered only to those initiated few who had already discovered the

Visiting and Volunteering in McGlashan Springs and

the Bucknam Tract

No trailheads or official trails exist yet within either prop-erty. There is, however, limited parking in the Bermgarten Road cul-de-sac off Skislope Way, as well as a web of dirt roads and bootleg trails. Although steep in some locations, the roads do provide access for a wide variety of hiking abilities. Because many are in poor condition, caution is advised while exploring the bootleg trails.

Please note: Construction work on a fire break will begin in the McGlashan Springs area on August 15. Visitors should take caution and watch for heavy equipment.

A partially dismantled barbed wire fence surrounds the main line of springs. Until Friends of Tahoe Donner Trails can orga-nize a volunteer effort to remove this hazard, caution is urged there as well.

The ecological and archaeological integrity of these proper-ties is now Tahoe Donner’s responsibility. Unfortunately, not all visitors have been protecting that integrity, and artifacts have already been stolen.

Although a parking lot is planned, for now winter use is limited by parking restrictions. In time, however, McGlashan Springs and the Bucknam Tract will no doubt become popular destinations for backcountry skiers and snowshoers.

Please contact the Friends of Tahoe Donner Trails club if you would like to volunteer in McGlashan Springs and the Bucknam Tract. The club expects to be active there for many years with both cleanup efforts and trail construction.

For more information about these areas and the trails club (including the planned adopt-a-trail program and the educa-tional weed walk with the Truckee River Watershed Council on August 10), please visit TDTrails.org or email the club at [email protected].

Please be sure that any changes made to the exterior of your home or to your lot are approved in advance by the Architectural Standards Committee (ASC). In the course of our normal inspections, we continue to come across a number of unapproved struc-tures, specifically wire fences, which have been installed without approval. If you are considering adding a fence you can obtain the necessary application from the ASC office. The committee will review the type, size, location and height of fences on a case-by-case basis. The area to be fenced must be limited. The ASC rules state that perimeter fencing of the lot is not allowed. The location, primary use and design are of utmost importance since any owners’ fence may be viewed by his or her neighbors. In reviewing a fence for approval, the committee considers various interests along with the need for an enclosure. The majority of the fence must be transparent so as not to create a visual barrier. The following factors will be taken into consideration by the committee:

1. Whether the fence design should be hori-

zontal or vertical, and whether the lot is flat or sloped.2. The size of the lot and the area proposed to be fenced. Fences may not be located within any setback area.3. The architectural style of the fence will be considered. No solid fencing is allowed. 4. The use must serve to protect small chil-dren or pets although low decorative or spot fencing for screening and landscaping may be allowed after review.5. The height is restricted to a maximum of six feet and approved screening may be required. 6. Any wire used must be plastic coated or factory color treated in approved colors. All metal support posts, railings and hardware must be of the same color.
