As I write this month’s message, I can look out on my deck and still see four feet of snow. Warmer weather has finally arrived and the snow is receding (not fast enough for me) and has revealed a lot of damage to homes here in Tahoe Donner. Our home has some roof damage that will have to be taken care of this summer and one down the street has so much damage that it will have to be demolished. Just an example as to how severe this winter has been. I hope that your homes have fared well.

You should all have been informed that we have two new directors that will take office at the end of the annual meeting the last Sunday of this month. Jay Lempinen and Steve Miller were the only two eligible candidates to sub-mit applications for the election in June.

Our Restated Bylaws provide that when we have only two candidates for two positions the board of directors declares those candidates elected and the director election concluded. This saves the Association the cost of print-ing and sending out election materials, as well as the cost associated with hiring the firm that counts the ballots. Our thanks go to Nan Carnal and the Elections Committee for a job well done.

The annual membership meeting will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2011. Due to the fact that we will not have to open the meeting for voting and counting of ballots, it will start at 10 a.m. and will finish around 1 p.m. with the regular BBQ. Members will have the oppor-tunity to ask questions of the board and the GM. There will be informational booths set up behind Pizza on the Hill.

Last month we opened escrow with the TDPUD for the purchase of the McGlashan Springs property, approximately 161 acres, that borders Tahoe Donner south of Skis-lope. Access to the property can be gained from Bermgarten Road. The intended purpose in acquiring this property is for recreational use and/or facilities as well as fire protection of Skislope homes.

The first meeting with members about the Downhill Ski Area parking lot expan-sion was held last month at Northwoods Clubhouse. This is part of the first five years of the 2030 General Plan. The intention is to hopefully reduce some of the on-street parking use. There will be no access to the parking lot from Viking Way, as this was a concern of owners on Viking. This expan-sion is scheduled to be completed in the fall of 2011. The entire General Plan is posted on the Tahoe Donner web site along with projected time lines. Comments, suggestions and ideas can be sent to the General Plan Committee. This committee has openings if you are interested in getting involved with the Tahoe Donner, as does the Elec-tions Committee. We are always looking for volunteers to serve on committees that assist the board.

Tahoe Donner expands defensible space and trails network with land purchase

Tahoe Donner just got a little bigger. The association has pur-chased an undeveloped 160 acre parcel of land from the Truckee Donner Public Utility District (TDPUD) for defensible space fire pro-tection and recreation. The McGlashan Springs property is located on the southern side of Tahoe Donner.

The sale price was $775,000 and the transaction included restric-tions on residential development rights. Board president Ron Wulff believes that the property will greatly benefit members both for recreational purposes and for further protecting homes from the threat of wild fires.

“We have a world-class forestry management team here at Tahoe Donner to maintain the property,” he said. “This property will also allow the expansion of the existing 35 miles of recreational trails throughout Tahoe Donner, and may even provide a connection to the Donner Rim Trail.”

The purchase fits Tahoe Donner’s 2030 General Plan objective for ongoing land purchases “for the purposes of fire security, recreation or development protection.” It also follows the association’s acquisi-tion last spring of an adjacent 240 acre property known as the Buck-nam Tract. That purchase was made in partnership with the Town of Truckee and the Truckee Donner Land Trust, protecting a unique gateway area for open space.

Beyond the immediate opportunity for Tahoe Donner members to enjoy the McGlashan Springs property for hiking and biking, the area could be used in the future for an additional recreational facil-ity. There are no specific plans to do so at this time.

Tahoe Donner Forester Bill Houdyschell expects to get his crews on the property to clean it up very soon. “In 1994, the Armstrong Fire burned into the property, destroying 10 acres of conifer forest,” he remembers. “In 1996, Truckee Donner Public Utility District hired a company to construct a road system, thin and clean up the forest on the property. As a result, the forested condition of the property is healthy but due to mini-drought cycles over the past 15 years there is defensible space work that needs to be completed along the ridge south of Skislope Way, due to beetle attacks.”

TAHOE DONNER GOLF COURSEGreetings from the great white north (a.k.a. the High Sierra)!

After touring the Tahoe Donner Golf Course again with TD course Superintendent Kevin Kuehne, it is painfully obvious that the course still has quite a way to go before we can open. Although the snow is melting rapidly, there is still so much more snow that needs to melt during the next few weeks before the course will be ready for play. Therefore, we have delayed the golf course opening until Friday, June 17. Weather/conditions permitting, we hope that we will be able to produce acceptable playing conditions by that time. We regret the inconvenience this will cause but unfortunately Mother Nature has really thrown us a curve ball this year, and Kevin and his crew are doing everything possible to get the course opened as soon as possible. To get a better idea of the current state of the golf course log into ForeTees and check out the photos that have been taken. There are many areas on the back nine with significantly higher snowpack than what appears in the photos, but fortunately the snow is melting quickly (just not fast enough).

The good news is that the greens are especially healthy for this time of year and Kevin is optimistic that once the course is open and fully operational, the greens will continually improve up to the high standards of recent years. The other good news is that barring any significant weather events, we are confident that the driving range will open at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 10, and remain open for the duration of the golf season.

In the meantime, I have made arrangements with two Reno courses: Lakeridge Golf Course and Somersett Country Club to offer discounted rates for TD members with valid TD member ID cards. Men’s Golf Club: The Club played the Third Annual TD Cup at the prestigious Sonoma Golf Club on May 14 and 15. The event was a Ryder-Cup style competition played by the top 14 point achievers in last season’s tournaments along with two TD pros. This year’s Cup was contested by teams captained by Aaron Jensen (the Jokers) and Ralph Shindler (the Sandbaggers). Team members are listed:

After a blustery first day, the Jokers jumped out to a command-ing 20-4 lead. With Sunday’s matches counting for double points, the Sandbaggers had a good chance to catch up. The Jokers withstood a strong charge plus rain and hail on Sunday to also win the second day 28-20, capturing the TD Cup. Everyone had a great time and would like to thank team captains Aaron Jensen and Ralph Shindler, as well as director of golf Ed Leinenkugel, for their hard work putting everything together. The course was enjoyed by all, and we especially appreciated playing the classic-design course from 1926.

Despite back-to-back winter walls, record snowfall, no spring what-soever and record high cabin fever, this could be the year that some-thing as simple as a triathlon rejuvenates your sense of place, right here in Tahoe Donner.

This month we caught up with two Tahoe Donner residents who frequent Trout Creek Recreation Center and work with many athletes all over the globe. Athletes just like you as well as athletes who race in the Tour De France, play soccer for Bayern Munich, and many, many more. Recently, we found Darcy Norman testing a new iPhone applica-tion for Adidas at Trout Creek Recreation Center.

Darcy and Inger Norman, as well as their two children, relocated to Tahoe Donner last year after spending two years in Germany where Darcy worked as a trainer for the Bayern Munich professional soccer team. Inger has also become a force within the world of sports and devotes her time to building programs for women, specifically the Luna Chix program for Clif Bar. Now Inger is putting on her own Lake Tahoe All Women’s Sports Camp right across Martis Valley at Northstar Ski Resort.

With these two local residents here in Tahoe Donner, we couldn’t fight back the urge to get some well-needed answers to some basic questions about a few topics that might hold many of us back this summer season.

Darcy: The winter has been unstoppable and many of us are itching to jump off the couch and get going. Is there any one thing we should be mindful of when we first kick it into high gear?

Harness your motivation and save some of it for those not so nice days. I’m just as guilty as the next person, when the roads dry and


the weather warms I want to spend a day or afternoon putting one foot in front of the other. I always have to tell myself to start easy and work my way up. Not so much in the speed area but in the time I put in on my shoes or bike. Try not to increase your mileage more than 10–15% a week. You can always keep the mileage down and work on improving your quality and speed.

Inger: If you could share one thing with all of our female readers who are interested in a summer adventure such as the Donner Lake Triathlon what would it be?

Hmmmm...Well, I’ve worked around women in sports for so long and it never gets old to see the sense of fun and accomplishment on faces of women who can’t believe they actually finished an event. Women have come so far in sports, but the participation of the average woman is what has elevated a completely new industry. And I think women need to know that their support group goes beyond their training partners. Pro athletes, sponsors and event directors all want to see women having a good time and feeling accomplished. It’s a wonderful environment to be around. That’s why I created All-Women Sports Camp, because after a two-year hiatus, I missed it!

Darcy: While working in Germany, for the Bayern Munich Soccer Team, did you find any-thing that changed how you approach your own physical activities?

Great question, I think the biggest thing I learned was on the nutri-tion side of things. I had the pleasure of eating many meals with both the professional cyclists and soccer players I worked with. I was always surprised that after a day of training for them, not me, they had far less on their plate than I. People think that since they did a big run or ride they can go for pizza, burgers and a beer. I used to be one of them. It is amazing what you don’t need to eat. Only eat until you’re not hungry, not until you’re full.

Darcy: We noticed you using an iPhone app to track your train-ing at Trout Creek. How does this help your endeavors and the athlete in general?

I think in this day and age it is all about convenience, motivation and progression. The iPhone app from Adidas that I use (micoach.com) provides progressive individualized programs that are deliverable in a convenient way. It also tracks your progress through the work you do to give you other motivating ways to show you the fruits of your labor besides feeling and looking great.

Inger: What is your favorite workout to do here and what was your favorite German beer?

Favorite workout… My ultimate summer treat is a 7:30 a.m. swim in Donner Lake with a group of friends. It’s the best, most beautiful way to start the day. And a trail run up to Mt. Judah never disappoints! My favorite beer, hands down, Paulaner Weiss Bier – also never disappoints! It’s like liquid gold and I thank my dad for teaching me how to appreciate good beer. It allowed us to adapt to the Ger-man culture very quickly.

Darcy: Knowing that you work for the HTC Highroad Cycling Team, and acknowledging the heartbreak that abounds in the area related to the Amgen Tour of California, do you think cycling at Tahoe’s altitude would have affected the pace of the pro peloton the way that it effects many of us?

Everyone is affected by altitude, some more than others. It would have all depended on the pace the group was going. If they had the

You’ll see huge submersed sandstones, an eerie apparition and occasional wildlife.

Trout Creek Aquathon: Warm up in the hot tub, then jump into the lap pool and swim for 15 to 20 min-utes straight, then change into your run-ning shoes and run the Nature Loop trail which starts and ends at Trout Creek, where you can finish with some recov-ery food next door at The Lodge. (Tip: when running the Nature Loop, keep in mind that the first half of this three mile loop is all downhill, so keep some gas in the tank for the return climb.)

EQUESTRIAN CENTER OPENINGSummer certainly has been slow to start this year, but conditions

permitting, the Equestrian Center plans to open mid-June. Provided the snow finally melts, you will be able to join us for our annual sum-mer Meet and Greet kick-off on Friday, June 17. Stop by and say hello from 5 – 7 p.m. You can meet the horses and staff, take part in games and try your luck at our prize drawings. We will have complimentary hot dogs, s’mores and cold drinks for you to enjoy and free horse trad-ing cards of your favorite mounts.

Rides, Lessons and Horsemanship CampsThe Equestrian Center will open for trail rides, pony rides, lessons

and horsemanship camps on Saturday, June 18. Hours of operation will be Thursday - Monday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. The last ride leaves at 3 p.m. Trail rides are open to anyone at least 7 years old and 48 inches tall. We offer one and two hour ride options. The two hour rides will be available as soon as the trails are cleared of snow. For the younger members of the family, we offer half-hour pony rides with our ponies Cappy, Cookie and Peanut Butter. Horsemanship Camps are offered each week from June 20 – August 22. Anyone 6 and up can also improve their riding skills with our private lessons offered Thursday – Monday for beginner to intermediate levels.

or try your hand throwing a rope at the roping station. Bring your camera and get pictures of the family at the fun photo stand and dress-up station. Kids can make an ornament or decorate a bandana at the arts and crafts table.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, you’ll enjoy a dinner of flame cooked hotdogs, hamburgers and veggie burgers along with a wide selection of toppings. A variety of cheeses, bacon, chili, pineapple, avocados, sautéed mushrooms and more are available to personalize your burger or dog. By consensus, the board approved their support for the use of$500,000 of TSSA-1 Funds for the construction of a connector trail from Tahoe Donner to Downtown Truckee, if the Bond was approved. The proposed project constructs 1 ½ miles of paved trails. The board will consider a formal resolution in support of the use of TSSA-1 Funds for this project at the June 17, 2011 board meeting.

The Tahoe Donner Green Club is introducing a new “Wonders of Nature” family film series on the first Wednesday evening of each month through October, beginning Wednesday, June 1. Featuring segments from the acclaimed BBC series, Planet Earth, big-screen viewings will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the central, common area of the Northwoods Clubhouse. You are welcome to come early and get din-ner or snacks from Pizza On The Hill and eat as you watch. Film seg-ments to be shown will include Mountains, Deserts, Ice Worlds, Deep Ocean, Shallow Sea, Great Plains, Jungles, Fresh Water, Seasonal Forests, and Caves.

TAHOE DONNER GREEN CLUB

And, back by popular demand, Tahoe Donner resident and Sierra College professor, Derek Larson, will lead a new hike featuring the geology, ecology and history of Donner Lake on Saturday, June 25, 10 a.m. – Noon. Meet at Rainbow Bridge overlook, Old Highway 40 (above Donner Lake) for a brief talk on the geologic origin of the Sierras, including the formation of Donner Lake and its surrounding glacial/volcanic features. We will then hike toward the summit of old Highway 40 to examine some of the common trees and high altitude plant adaptations on this section of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Tahoe Donner launched its new Google calendar this spring, with the hope of introducing a simple and painless way to import TD activities into your personal Google calendar.

With activities bursting at the seams at all of the Tahoe Donner amenities, we created separate Google calendars for each one. You have the option of viewing them together or individually. We also hope this layout will help you plan out your activities and stay in the loop with all things TD.

SYNC TD SUMMER FUN WITH YOUR GOOGLE CALENDAR

Viewing optionsFrom tahoedonner.com, select the calendar tab at the top of the

main page. Once the calendar loads, you will notice the date option in the upper left hand corner. Select the month you would like to view. You can also change the viewing setting from monthly to weekly on the right hand side. The main view should include all of the amenity information merged together. If you select the agenda icon at the top right, you can select individual amenities by clicking the boxes of the calendars you would like to view. You can create your own customized view, depending on what amenity boxes you check.

Importing into your personal calendarYou must have a Gmail account and Google calendar created to sync

and import TD information. Click on the Google icon at the bottom right of the calendar. You will then be prompted to sign in to your personal Google account, and then asked to select which calendars to add. Once you add the calendars, you will see the information auto-matically pop-up in your personal calendar. You can also click on individual events and opt to send reminders to yourself about things you would like to attend.

We like the way this system works so far, and find it to be easy to sync. We hope you will try it out and start integrating summer fun into your own schedule!


NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the regular annual meeting of the members of Tahoe Donner Association, a California nonprofit mutual benefit corporation, will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2011, at 10 a.m., at the Tahoe Donner Northwoods Clubhouse (11509 Northwoods Blvd.), Truckee, California.

Therefore, Mr. Jay Lempinen and Mr. Steve Miller are declared elected, the 2011 Board of Directors Election is concluded, and Mr. Lempinen and Mr. Miller will take office upon conclusion of the Annual Membership meet-ing on June 26, 2011. In light of these circum-stances, there will be no election materials sent out this year.

Board of directors welcomes two new members

The seasons are changing at Tahoe Don-ner, and that’s not just a reference to the last vestiges of winter snow. At the association’s annual meeting later this month, the board of directors will say goodbye to two of its mem-bers and hello to its new recruits.

John Dundas and Don Berryman have contributed countless hours in the service of Tahoe Donner and will be missed on the board for their insights, humor and dedication. Nor-mally an election would be held for those two vacant positions, but members Jay Lempinen and Steve Miller were the only two applicants and win the positions without challenge.

Steve grew up in Philadelphia and gradu-ated from Vassar College (NY) with a degree in Economics. After six winters living and working in the ski towns of Stratton, Sun Valley and Alta, he moved to San Francisco, where he was hired by Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor. In 1982, he moved to Prudential Securities which became Wacho-via Securities and is now Wells Fargo Advi-sors. He oversees private client funds in a manner that he says might be called hedge fund management.

Steve has run several marathons and numerous 10k runs and is also an avid moun-tain biker. He and his wife, Andrea, love to hike and took their 11 year old son on his first hike when he was just 10 days old. That

Jay knows Tahoe Donner inside out, having worked at the golf course for six years and the ski rental shop for 15 years. In his spare time, he volunteered for the Architectural Stan-dards Committee for six years, including one year as chairman.

Until 1990, Jay lived in Petaluma, Califor-nia, with his wife of 53 years, Jackie, and their three children. He was in food sales for 25 years. For the last five years before retirement, he was managing partner in Sambo’s Restau-rant in Novato, California, where he oversaw the efforts of 47 employees.

“I have read the general plan, and since the board is going to be concentrating on the elements of that plan in the coming years, it is my goal to join the effort to see that the investments that we make via the general plan are based on sound business assumptions, homeowner benefit and fiscal responsibility,” he says.

sense of active adventure was contagious, and Christopher now races on the champion Alder Creek Middle School XC team. Andrea is a PSIA level 3 instructor working at the Tahoe Donner Cross Country Center and as a PSIA Nordic examiner. Each of them is a member of the Auburn Ski Club.

The Millers purchased their Tahoe Donner home in 2002 and moved here full time one year later. “As a board member, I hope to take a close look at TD's summer trail system with an eye to upgrading both the trail bed and the system’s functionality,” he says. “I will encour-age the board to have staff analyze the current system with an eye to adding trails which will create a more destination-based map.”
