PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I want to take this opportunity to thank our outstanding Tahoe Donner staff and general manager for the excellent job they did this summer in providing so many wonderful activities for our homeowners and their families. All the events that took place were very successful with strong participation levels. To follow are just a few of the events that took place this summer:

(Continued on next pg. 6)

Waterpalooza - Since this event, which was conceived last year, was such a hit with the membership, staff expanded it to two days on June 30 – July 1, and moved it to the Tahoe Don-ner Driving Range. This family friendly event had it all; waterslides and water events such as dunk tanks, pirate ships, water balloons, squirt guns, and much, much more. There was live music, carnival snacks, and even a BBQ. A new giant slide was also purchased to use for this event that will be used for future association events. Considering the success of this event, we must do it more than once next year.

Euer Valley BBQ - To celebrate the association’s purchase of 482 acres in the Euer Valley, Tahoe Donner held a special member picnic and BBQ in the valley on July 28 to introduce the valley to the membership. This exciting first time event was a tremendous success, with more than 300 homeowners attending. The event included music, games and crafts for children, and guided hikes, all in one of the most beautiful settings in the Sierra Mountains! Plan on attend-ing next year.

Summer Concert - This year’s summer concert on July 21 featured three time Grammy Award winner Sam Bush, with North Tahoe’s Dead Winter Carpenters opening the show. The Tahoe Donner Driving Range hosted about 1,500 show goers; picnickers of all ages showed up early to secure their space on the wide, comfortable grassy venue. Following the opening act, Sam Bush, backed by his stellar band, did not disappoint. The festivities were nothing short of memorable!

Day Camps - Many thanks from me and my family for the wonderful day camp programs this season; they continue to get better every year.

Golf Course - I would also like to take the opportunity to applaud director of golf, Ed Leinenkugel, and his staff, especially golf course superintendent, Kevin Kuehne, and his crew, for the great job they did in getting our course back in shape after heavy winter damage. There isn’t much time left in the 2012 season, but the course is in outstanding shape.

Upcoming Projects

The 2030 General Plan adopted by the Tahoe Donner Board of Directors is composed of Capital Improvement Projects, which were conceived to alleviate deficiencies in our aging facilities and to accommodate future growth. It is the board’s fiduciary responsibility, as appointed representatives of the association, to protect its assets and meet the needs of its membership, especially our children and grandchildren.

FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER’S DESK It isn’t news most homeowners want to hear: that assessments might

increase, but sometimes a fee increase is the best way to keep the orga-nization in good financial health -- and, sometimes, increases are just unavoidable. Some of the following are possible reactions homeowners might have when they learn that their fees are about to increase, fol-lowed by the related rationales for an increase. • “I probably won’t be living here in 10 years when the facility infra-

structure issues become a problem from a growing resort community build out. Why should I have to pay now?” Many owners often pose this question, particularly in a community with a predominantly second homeowner mix. The problem with this “short-timer” logic is that these people are themselves benefiting from the use of the facilities, pools, hiking trails, and other common assets paid for by members who lived here before. • “Why don’t we just have a special assessment for a specific

project?” It can be difficult to collect money when you suddenly have a large expense. It’s better to collect it gradually, so the funds are there when you need them for previously designated projects. Also, a special assessment unfairly penalizes homeowners who happen to live in the association at the time.• “Why does half my annual assessment go to Capital Funds?

Equipment and major components (like the roofs) must be replaced from time to time, regardless of whether we plan for the expense. We prefer to plan and set the funds aside now. Reserve Funds aren’t an extra expense—they just spread out expenses more evenly. Most of Tahoe Donner’s amenity infrastructure was not originally built to accommodate the current membership numbers – these funds allow for appropriate facility replacement.

Occasionally, you may hear that the board of directors of the associa-tion operates in a fiduciary capacity for the homeowners. Or you may read about the board’s fiduciary responsibility in the governing docu-ments. Just exactly what does this mean?

Fiduciary duty simply means the board has an ethical and legal obliga-tion to make decisions in the best interests of the entire association. Fiduciary duty includes a duty of loyalty to the association, which means that board members cannot use their position to take advantage of the association.

Fiduciary duty also includes the duty to exercise ordinary care. This means board members must perform their duties in good faith and in a manner they believe to be in the best interest of the association, with

The 2012 election season is upon us and, for those members who are registered to vote in this community, your Truckee community has its fair share of elections to participate in. The Town of Truckee Town Council has two four-year seats open and one two-year term seat avail-able, all with several candidates running. Truckee Donner Public Utility District has three four-year seats open. Truckee-Donner Recreation & Park District is proposing a bond (Measure J) to build an aquatic center and performing arts center. And, the Truckee Tahoe Airport District Board has three seats open for a four-year term and one seat open for a two-year term. Welcome to the land of Special Districts! Truckee Tahoe Community Television will broadcast candidate forums, visit ttctv.org for more details.

Of course, it is also budget season for the association as we review plans for 2013 to keep pace with the membership’s ever increasing utilization of the amenities and capital requirements based on the General Plan and reserve replacement requirements of Tahoe Donner. After holding the operating assessment flat for four years at $695 per property, we are finally feeling pressure as fixed costs to the association continue to rise. Thankfully, this operating assessment only represents about a third of the operating cost of the association. Through sound business practices and the constant review of amenity operations by management, board of directors and committees, the association is able to generate almost $9 million dollars annually to maintain an overall low operating assessment. such care as an ordinary prudent person in a similar position under similar circumstances would use.

In short, boards must act in the best interests of the association and act reasonably.

Board members fulfill their fiduciary duty by:• Developing and using a formal budgeting process• Establishing and adhering to budgetary guidelines• Making sure the budgeting process reflects the wishes of the

association’s members• Collecting sufficient fees to adequately operate the association

Election and budgets aside, I would like to invite the veterans of our community to join me at 6 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, at the Lodge Restaurant & Pub to celebrate the birthday of the Marine Corps and Veterans Day, for all those who have served, or are cur-rently serving our country.

To follow are a few exciting projects moving forward this fall:The Beach Club Marina - To better accommodate the increased

utilization of the Beach Club Marina by our membership, upgrades will take place at this facility this spring. The scope of this project pro-vides for the expansion of the existing upper lawn picnic area, beach area, and deck area outside the snack bar. The project will also include resolving disability access issues for the marina deck and upper lawn.

New Alder Creek Nordic Center - The 2030 General Plan includes the replacement of the dual use Cross Country/Equestrian Center facility. The current Cross Country Center is an aging facility originally constructed as an Equestrian Center and later modified to accommo-date a limited Cross Country facility operation. This amenity is in high demand and its 4,200 square feet is poorly configured to accommodate this demand. On September 5, the board held a special meeting for the purpose of interviewing the firms that responded to the association’s Request for Proposals for services related to the construction of the new Alder Creek Nordic Center. The project consists of constructing a new facility where the existing facility is, as well as increasing parking capacity through parking lot additions and improvements, the develop-ment of a new Groomer Barn with the necessary storage capacity, and an equestrian area. The new facility will provide an increased level of service for our homeowners and public guests by providing ample space to operate during the winter and summer seasons. The association has been contributing to a Development Fund for this project for several years. The funding required to complete the project already exists and no additional assessment will be required.

The Lodge Deck Enclosure & Expansion - The greatest deficiency of The Lodge facility is the limited space in the Pub, which exceeds

capacity both in the summer and winter. The Pub Deck will be enclosed in order to accommodate this increased usage. As part of the renovation of the facility, a Permanent Grotto Bar will be installed, the Pro Shop and Snack Bar expanded, and the kitchen area will receive improve-ments as well. Additionally, a new outdoor deck will be constructed so that we will continue to have the same amount of space for those of us who enjoy al fresco dinning.

Snowplay/Driving Range Enhancements - The recent addition of the tubing activity at this facility has resulted in doubling the participa-tion and significantly increased positive Net Operating Results from past years. The scope of the project is to create a gradual berm in neces-sary areas that allow for better Snowplay operations during periods of little snow. During summer months, golf course operations and concert activity will not be adversely affected as the design concepts support various activities and driving range needs. Tahoe Donner has the best sledding and tubing in the entire Tahoe basin. It’s free for members with who have paid their annual recreation fee, so come on out and join the fun this winter. There are even outdoor fire pits for making smores.

Fall is the perfect time for fun at Tahoe Donner

Signs create first impressions and can help unify and engage a com-munity. Tahoe Donner’s signage has improved, thanks to modern new signs throughout the development that will be complete in October. Twelve main signs in Tahoe Donner as well as several smaller direc-tional signs have been designed and constructed by renowned sign makers, Weidner Architectural Signage, whose clients include Adobe, Levi Strauss & Co., California Academy of Sciences, Los Angeles Civic Park, and Northstar, California.

Tahoe Donner management and the board of directors feel that new signs will enhance and better reflect the vibrant feel of the Tahoe Don-ner community. Director of Capital Projects Forrest Huisman recol-lects that, “Once we started installing the new signs this summer, we received a flood of positive comments from happy homeowners and their increased pride of ownership.” He adds, “It’s encouraging to work with and see the commitment of the board of directors in making these and other association improvements, as they directly benefit current homeowners and their future generations alike.”

The main monument at the base of Tahoe Donner is made of Cor-Ten® metal—the latest trend in architecture because of its unique look and naturally oxidizing finish--which transforms into a rich color and texture over time, while maintaining its durability for years to come.

All new signs incorporate the profile view of two popular ridgelines; along the top is of the Sierra Crest as viewed from the Tahoe Donner Beach Club Marina, and Castle Peak as viewed along the Pacific Crest Trail. Eight of the signs have been completed so far and the remaining will be finished by October 8.

All of the signage is very well built to withstand snow removal and extreme weather conditions and all were designed in the mountain vernacular with a combination of wood and aluminum. “The challenge presented was to develop and implement a sign program that unifies one of the largest homeowner associations in the country and have the signage be a reflection of the culture and beliefs of the residents.” said Designer/Senior Account Executive for Weidner Architectural Signage, Arie Kover. “The branding and way-finding signage was designed and fabricated with materials to endure harsh Sierra seasons.”

Like local ski areas and larger community groups in the greater Tahoe Area, Tahoe Donner Association is also improving its way-find-ing and amenity signage program for cohesive branding and a stan-dardized appeal. At a cost of less than $700K, each amenity and major intersection will be branded with signage that is effective and that con-siderably improves the area’s visual aesthetics, providing homeowners with increased pride, translating to sustainable property values, while

also helping visitors successfully navigate to and from each amenity. Look for more updated signs next spring at locations such as the Alder Creek Campground, Cross Country Ski Center, Beach Club Marina, Alder Creek and Schussing Sub-monuments, and Boat Storage.

According to Tom Johns, President of the Board of Directors for the Tahoe Donner Association, “The new way-finding signage is part of the overall effort to represent Tahoe Donner as a first class place to live and to continue to improve Tahoe Donner for our kids and grand-kids.” Johns acknowledged that some homeowners feel that the new way-finding signage isn’t necessary. Said Johns, “Part of the reasoning for the signage is to incorporate cohesive signs in a way that will help people who are interested in buying a home in Tahoe Donner, visiting friends, or using Tahoe Donner facilities to find their way easily to our amenities.”

ON THE COvER

Hudson Russell Curry, 6, son of Dave and Regina Curry, has lived in Tahoe Donner his whole life. Dave has been a local for over 25 years, with 18 of those years as a Tahoe Donner resident. Dave and Regina recently celebrated their 7 year wedding anniversary and over the years, as a couple and fam-ily, they have developed friendships with neighbors and TD staff that have truly made Tahoe Donner home. Regina says that they experience a sense of community and con-nectedness here that makes every day just a little more special.

The Curry family enjoys swimming, tennis, trail running, hiking, BBQing at the marina with friends, TD Summer Camp, working out at Trout Creek and lounging by the pool. The Lodge, concerts in the summer, in addition to all the special events throughout the year, are opportunities they take advantage of. Lounging on the deck at home is also a treasured pastime for the Curry family.

Their favorite season in Tahoe Donner is summer, though fall is a very close second. They appreciate the beautiful landscape, the crisp, sunny days and chilly nights, and of course, all the baking, cooking and football that comes along with it.

Parent’s Night Out is the Curry fam-ily’s favorite event at Tahoe Donner. Dave and Regina enjoy dinner at The Lodge and Hudson has a hoot playing with his friends, enjoying pizza and a movie, plus he gets to see Mariah, the Rec Coordinator. They have a special friendship and she is such a delight! The Curry family feels blessed to be a part of the TD community, and we are very happy they are a part of it as well!(Continued on next pg.)

Fall is in the air and tennis is still a focal point this month at Tahoe Donner Tennis. We are looking to stay open longer this season and continue to offer the popular cardio tennis, theme clinics and ladies day drill and play activities. Private lessons, racket stringing, clothing and footwear sales will also continue into the month of October. Make a point to sign up for a clinic and take advantage of the smaller classes this fall. Don’t forget to use your remaining six pack products because they expire at the end of the season and will not be transferable to 2013. Our scheduled closing date is Sunday, October 14, and this will mark the end of our 2012 season. Courts will remain open this fall until the first big storm of the year covers the courts in snow and leaves us wishing for warm spring days so we can get back out and play.

Clinics and lessons will not be available on Thursday, October 4, Friday, October 5, and Monday, October 8, so please adjust your schedules accordingly. We apologize for any inconvenience and we appreciate your under-standing. The pros will be attending a team building exercise with our local tennis pros from the area.

The tennis center will host the High School Regional Tournament on Friday and Saturday, October 12 and 13. The full day event is sure to be a treat as our local Truckee High School stars will be battling it out with other Reno/Tahoe area schools for the right to move on and play in the Nevada State Championships. Please

stop by to cheer on our athletes and watch some great tennis players in the making!

The tennis center is still tracking usage this fall and we ask you to please bring your ID cards with you for scanning. This is a very important element in determining schedul-ing of the tennis center’s hours of operation and opening and closing dates. Please scan your card manually after our closing date of October 14. The scanner is located on the right side of the check in window; please listen for the ring to make sure that it scanned prop-erly. After our closing date, the entrance gate will be locked at night by security and then unlocked in the morning either by security, member services or a homeowner. If you see someone who is utilizing the facility incor-rectly, i.e. skateboarding, biking, or abusing the courts, fencing, nets, or buildings, please call (530) 448-9076 and report the incident to security. It is up to all of us to keep an eye on our favorite amenity here at Tahoe Donner.

With only a few weeks left before the golf course closes, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge some of the people who contrib-uted behind the scenes to help the golf course operation blossom into something wonderful after a challenging start to the season, start-ing with our golf course superintendent, Kevin Kuehne, who literally brought the golf course back to life. Kevin provided the leadership and vision, along with a knack for effective problem solving, to guide his hard-working and dedi-cated staff through weather-related problems that severely impacted course conditions. By Kevin’s account, the course lost approximately 40 percent of its turf due to winter ice damage. Kevin made a series of correct decisions that have been validated by the excellent course conditions our golfers have experienced since early August. Thank you, Kevin, for a job well done! I would also like to thank members of my golf operations team for their positive attitudes, dedication to service, and tireless work on behalf of our members and guests to make the golf course a fun place to visit and an enjoy-able place to work. Thanks to James Murtagh, Charlie Lyon, Joe Stakoe, John Hamilton, Tom Lovely, John Bickford, Shannon Carey, George

Tahoe Donner Men’s Golf ClubThis year’s Club Championship was held

August 25-26. The course was in great condi-tion! Thank you very much to Kevin Kuehne and his staff who have worked long and hard to recover the course from harsh winter treat-ment! Thanks to Ed Leinenkugel, James Mur-tagh and staff for their diligence in arranging golf logistics. We also applaud Ralph Shindler, Aaron Jensen, and Jim Dill for coordinating the tournament. Special Kudos to chef Bill Brown for preparing our delicious Saturday lunch of brats and dogs.

Due to a bit of wind and fast greens, scores were a bit high this year. We did have a tie for low gross in the championship flight between Dennis Younglove and Tim Westfall, which necessitated a three-hole playoff. Dennis pre-vailed through the third hole and walked away with the winner’s trophy. Congratulations to Dennis and all the other flight winners.

ing to ramp up for the winter season at Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area. We have made a few improvements over the summer months including purchasing a new Pisten Bully Park Groomer, which will help us continue provid-ing some of the best grooming in the Tahoe Basin! We also improved the loading ramps at Snowbird, painted the facility inside and out, and installed new carpet. This winter we are planning a few new events to add to our sched-ule including Ski and Ride Sunrise Bowl, Learn to Ski and Snowboard Week, Easter Egg Mile Run Hunt, and a Spring Evening Ski Party. Visit the website in November for more detail about these events. We will begin taking reservations for Ski School Programs starting September 15. This includes TD Tykes, TD Tykes for Kinder-garten, Recreation Ski and Snowboard teams

If you are a fun, active Tahoe Donner alpine skier, want to enjoy year-round sports activi-ties and a great social environment, the Tahoe Donner Senior Alpine Ski Club (TDSASC) is for you!

TDSASC focuses on alpine skiing, organiz-ing over 20 ski days at reduced rates at resorts around the Tahoe basin, ski and racing clinics at Tahoe Donner Downhill, and ski travel weeks in the USA and Europe, the latter organized through Far West Ski Association. There are potluck parties following the clinics and even a Sock Hop with a DJ. Off-season activities include kayak trips, tennis and golf tournaments, BBQs, Halloween and holiday parties, and in the fall, ski conditioning work-outs. We also have one cross country day to experience a different form of skiing. Sign up and join us.

This fun, active club welcomes all Tahoe Donner Alpine skiers, 55 years and above, who ski at a proficiency level of intermediate, advanced, or expert. (An intermediate skier is defined as one who can comfortably ski the Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Area.) Member-ship information, membership forms and schedules of winter and off-season activities can be accessed on our website tahodonner.com/cross-country. Go to “join us”. We’re accepting renewals and new applications now.

We’re looking forward to seeing everyone again this season. We will be open seven days a week 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. If you’re a season pass holder, we open at 7 a.m. from Monday – Friday and the ski patrol will check you in. Zone Qualifier Results:The Zone event had 7 teams this year and

was played on a delightful late summer day,

however, many of the scores were not so won-derful. Winning teams were: 127 - Dill, Murphy, Ginsberg, Brown 129 - Marnitz, Pyle, Nousaianen, Parsons 13 - Botto, Ravey, Anderson, Gunny

The Winning team advances to the NCGA 4-man competition next year. Congratulations to Jim, Kevin, Mike, Bill!

This year’s Invitational Classic was held September 14 - 16. The weekend kicked off with a registration party on Friday with over 75 players enjoying music, refreshments and participating in a putting tournament. Players also were able to order their tee prize which was a pair of Footjoy contour causal golf shoes. Saturday started early with a super continental breakfast before the shotgun start at 9 a.m. After the round we had a chipping contest and a wild and crazy Horse Race with 20 teams. Cocktails and dinner for the 130 players and guests followed at 6 p.m. and was accompanied by music provided by the trio of Akiko and the Tikis. After presenting awards for the day’s heroics, a prize drawing was held for 57 prizes including 17 rounds for four at top NorCal courses. Sunday featured a hot

breakfast before the best ball tournament at 9 a.m. This was followed by a delicious lunch in the tent and an awards presentation. We had 86 players registered for this year’s Classic, which was the most in recent history. A great time was had by all - so if you weren’t playing this year, make sure you don’t miss out next September. This is what golf is all about!

An event this special could not have occurred without the hard work and diligence of many people. We extend out thanks to the Pro Shop staff of Ed, James, Charlie, Joe, John, Steve and others who handled all the golf logistics and organization. These guys had their hands full with three days of hectic activity. Kudos to Kevin Kuehne for having the course in superb condition and arranged for picture perfect weather. Our cart atten-dants did yeoman-like work in arranging and setting up all the carts at one time. Thank you Thom Ravey and the Tikis for providing great music for our evening. We appreciate Cyn and the rest of the Lodge staff for handling our morning refreshments and on-course service. The Invitational Tournament Committee toiled long and hard to bring about this affair:

We continue to receive calls about loose dogs. This situation is both unpleasant and potentially dangerous. We can’t emphasize enough the potential for harm when dogs are allowed to run loose. If you have dogs and want to take them out or let them out, you must be aware of what you may and may not do. The rules are very clear. “Dogs shall only be allowed within any portion of the Common Area when they are leashed and otherwise under the supervision and restraint of their owners or other person accompanying the dog.” Common areas are pretty much everything in Tahoe Donner that is not an individual property or the street. This includes the golf course. So, if you are not on your property or on the street, you are either on someone else’s lot or on one of Tahoe Donner’s many common areas.

As I have mentioned before, the Town of Truckee Animal Control Department has asked us to remind everyone of the rules regarding dogs on the streets. The streets are solely within the purview of the Town of Truckee. If dogs are on the streets they are required to be under the immediate control of the owner or caretaker. You probably won’t be giving your dog commands if you can’t see what it is doing. The best way to assure your safety, the safety of your dog, and the safety of your neighbors and their dogs, is to have your dog on a leash at all times.

According to the Town of Truckee Animal Control Department, your liability as a dog owner is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly. If your dog is off leash and attacks or bites another person or dog, you may be subject to a violation, as well as legal action. Being courteous to those around you by using a leash will help prevent any unpleasant situations. Additionally, if you rent your property, please be sure that your tenants are aware of all association rules.

To report loose dogs, please call the Town of Truckee Animal Con-trol Department at (530) 582-7830.
