Of� ce of the Secretary of State will host a celebration next month in Olympia to mark the 125th Anniver-sary of Washington statehood.
On Nov. 11, 1889, President Benjamin Harrison signed a proclamation admitting Washington Terri-tory to the Union. To mark the occasion, organizers will gather at the Legislative Building on Tues., Nov. 11, to host a variety of events, including a re-creation of the telegram delivery that announced Washington's statehood at 3:09 p.m., making it precisely 125 years ago. Washingtonians and local organizations are also encouraged to participate in a coordinated tweet say-ing: "Happy Birthday Washington #WA125" at exactly 3:09 p.m.
There will be opportunities to tour the Legislative Building, a slide show displaying centennial legacy projects from the last 25 years, memorabilia from the 1980 centennial celebration, the Washington State Constitution, and Gilbert Stuart's famous one-dollar bill portrait of George Washington, courtesy of the Tacoma Art Museum. In between activities and per-formances, visitors can peruse additional exhibitions from state agencies, heritage groups, and arts and cul-ture organizations, as well as enjoy a piece of the � ve-
foot-long Washington-shaped cake.A new exhibit highlighting the major stories of
Washington statehood will open on that day. Wash-ington 1889: Blazes, Rails and the Year of Statehood, a privately funded exhibit presented by Legacy Washington and the Of� ce of Secretary of State, will feature an original 42-star � ag, artifacts from the Great Seattle Fire, a replica of the Washington State Constitution and more. The public exhibit will be on display in the lobby of the Of� ce of Secretary of State, located in the Legislative Building, 416 Sid Snyder Ave. SW, in Olympia.
The event will also include high school marching bands, live music, dance performances, and speech-es by Secretary of State Kim Wyman, Washington State Historical Society Executive Director Jennifer Kilmer, and Governor Jay Inslee.
Festivities begin at 1 p.m. on Tues., Nov. 11, at the Legislative Building on the Capitol Campus in Olympia, Wash. The event is sponsored by the Wash-ington State Employees Credit Union (WSECU), as well as donations from Wagner's European Bakery & Cafe, Johnson-Cox Co., Crystal Springs, and Foss Waterway Seaport.

Historians to celebrate Wash. 125th Anniversary statehood

the City of Tacoma's Events and Recognitions Committee in November.
The nine-member panel oversees activities related to City-hosted events and special rec-ognition programs, and is responsible for planning, review-ing, and evaluating events; engaging the community in its fund-raising ef-forts; and soliciting corporate and pri-vate sponsorships to leverage funds for City-hosted events, such as the Mar-tin Luther King Jr. Celebration and the City of Destiny Awards, according to City of Tacoma staff. Committee members consist of Tacoma residents, with rep-resentatives from each of Tacoma's � ve Council Districts, and bring a range of perspectives and expertise that focus on the City's commitment to celebrate civic engagement and special ob-servations. Committee members are recom-mended by Tacoma City Council's Economic Development Committee and appointed by Ta-coma City Council.
Currently, the committee consists of Erin Lee, Roslyn Smith, Deirdre Evans, and Valen-tine Smith. There are currently � ve vacancies on the committee.
The City of Tacoma issued a call for appli-cants in September (see "City seeks applicants for Tacoma Events and Recognitions Commit-tee," Tacoma Daily Index, Sept. 9, 2014). The application deadline expired on Fri., Sept. 26. One candidate applied: Betty Popenuck. Ta-coma City Council's Economic Development Committee interviewed Popenuck during a public meeting on Tues., Oct. 14. Tacoma City Council is tentatively scheduled to formally appoint Popenuck during a public meeting on Tues., Nov. 4, at 5 p.m., at the Tacoma Mu-nicipal Building, located at 747 Market Street, First Floor, in downtown Tacoma.

Image Courtesy Sound TransitSound Transit is seeking input on a proposed new
express bus route to connect several park-and-ride lots with Lakewood and Puyallup Sounder Stations.
The new service would provide fast commuter ser-vice connecting Lakewood Station, the State Route 512 Park-and-Ride, South Hill Park-and-Ride, the Fairgrounds Red Lot and Puyallup Station. Buses would connect with every Sounder train at Puyallup and provide a connection to Sounder for Lakewood residents for all ten Sounder round trips. Buses will also connect with the "reverse-commute" trips - trains going south to Tacoma in the morning and north to Seattle in the afternoon. This will provide a new op-portunity for riders from Tukwila, Kent, Auburn and Sumner to commute to Lakewood on transit.
The new route is part of the agency's 2015 Service Implementation Plan and would go live during regu-larly scheduled service changes in June of 2015. Sound Transit is seeking input on the new route during a pub-lic meeting and public hearing in November. A public meeting will be held on Weds., Oct. 29, between 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., at Lakewood Station, located at 11424 Paci� c Highway SW, First Floor, in Lakewood, Wash. A public hearing will be held on Thurs., Nov. 6, between 12 p.m. and 12:30 p.m., at Sound Transit Headquar-ters, located at the Union Station Ruth Fisher Board Room, 401 S. Jackson St., in downtown Seattle. Input gathered will be presented to the Sound Transit Board in December as it considers the service plan during the agency's budget development process.
