A team of as-sessors from the Commission on Ac-creditation for Law Enforcement Agen-cy (CALEA) will arrive in Tacoma next month to ex-amine all aspects of the Tacoma Po-lice Department's policies and pro-cedures, manage-ment operations, and support services.

According to City of Tacoma of cials, national ac-creditation is a highly prized recognition of law en-forcement professional excellence, which only 2 per cent of police agencies nationwide possess. In Wash-ington State, just eight out of 237 law enforcement agencies are CALEA accredited. The Tacoma Police Department is the only agency in Pierce County to attain or retain this distinction.

As part of the on-site assessment, employees and members of the community are invited to offer com-ments to the assessment team at a public informa-tion session on Mon., Aug. 5 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Tacoma Police Headquarters, located at 3701 South Pine Street (Room 1210).

Additionally, employees and members of the com-munity are invited to offer comments to the assess-ment team by calling (253) 591-5274 on Mon., Aug. 5 between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. According to City of Tacoma staff, this is a non-recorded, non-monitored line. As such, you will not be able leave a message and may get a busy signal. Telephone comments, as well as appearances at the public information ses-sion, are limited to 10 minutes each and must ad-dress the agency's ability to comply with CALEA standards.

Finally, employees and members of the communi-ty wishing to offer written comments about the Ta-coma Police Department's ability to meet the stan-dards for accreditation should write to Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320, Gainesville, Virginia, 20155.

Volunteers are the backbone of FISH Food BanksLast year, FISH volunteers contributed 46,405 hours. This is an equivalent of

nearly 23 full time employees. If FISH had to pay for these hours at a minimum wageof $7.16 it would have cost $332,260.

The FISH volunteers sent food home for more than 186,000 individuals last yearand deserve a hugh THANK YOU from the Board of Directors, staff andcommunity. The families needing food can now concentrate on other aspects of theirlives such as finding a job or getting training without the pains of hunger. FISH couldnot have made such a huge difference in our neighborhoods without you! If you wishto help FISH please call 253-383-3164 and we will direct you to a food bank.

FISHFOODBANKS OFPIERCECOUNTY

NEEDSA new location for a food bank is needed.Currently one of our food banks is located atTrinity Presbyterian Church.
