Dr. Jim Hoard, Dawn Lucien, and Dennis Flan- nigan received the soci- ety's Alan Liddle Award for their efforts to save Tacoma's Murray Morgan Bridge. Dr. Hoard and Lu- cien were principals in the Save Our Bridge organi- zation, which demonstrated the feasibility of saving the bridge. The historic span reopened after reno- vation and marked its centennial this year. Flan- nigan, a former state representative, was cited for his efforts in securing funding for the bridge. The Alan Liddle Award recognizes historic preservation achievement. Maritime historian Chuck Fowler received the society's Murray Morgan Award for historical writ- ing. Fowler authored or co-authored Tall ships on Puget Sound, Tugboats on Puget Sound, and Patrol Boats and Rescue Boats on Puget Sound. An Olym- pia resident, he is former president of the Maritime Historical Society of Puget Sound. The Murray Mor- gan Award recognizes achievement for historical re- search and writing. The awards were presented Monday during the organization's 23rd annual meeting at the Univer- sity of Puget Sound. "As the fastest growing, and one of the best capitalized banks in the Western region, we are continuing to strategically expand our net- work of banking offices in major metropolitan markets," said Debbie McLeod, Executive Vice President of Retail Banking for Opus Bank. In addition to Tacoma, the bank plans to open a branch in downtown Seattle. "Complementing our existing 22 locations in the Puget Sound re- gion, these new offices will be Opus Bank's first offices located in the core business districts of Seattle and Tacoma." The new Tacoma banking office will be locat- ed at 950 Pacific Ave., Suite 150, in the Tacoma- Pierce County Chamber of Commerce building at the intersection of Pacific Avenue and 11th Street (pictured). It is scheduled to open in the third quarter of 2013. The new Seattle banking office will be located at 1401 Fourth Street, in the former Tully's Coffee store at the intersec- tion of Fourth Street and Union Street. The exit will remain closed through July. During the ex- tended closure, crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) will demolish the existing ramp and connect a new ramp that will accommodate the eastbound State Route 16 viaduct currently under construction. Preparatory work for the lengthy closure re- quires full closures of eastbound SR 16 and some area ramps. The closures are scheduled as follows: 11 p.m. Mon., April 15, to 4 a.m. Tues., April 16 -- Closing all eastbound SR 16 lanes at Union Av- enue. -- Closing Union Avenue on-ramp to eastbound SR 16. 11 p.m. Tues., April 16, to 4 a.m. Weds., April 17 -- Closing all eastbound SR 16 lanes at Union Av- enue. -- Closing Union Avenue on-ramp to eastbound SR 16. 10 p.m. Fri., April 19, to 7:30 a.m. Sat., April 20 -- Closing one southbound lane of I-5 between I-705 and SR 16. The southbound I-5 exit to west- bound SR 16 will remain open. 12:01 a.m. Sat., April 20 -- Closing southbound I-5 exit to South 38th Street (Exit #132A). The closure will remain in ef- fect through July. 12:01 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. Sat., April 20 -- Also closing southbound I-5 exit to westbound SR 16 (Exit #132B). Motorists will be detoured via the South 56th Street interchange. 10 p.m. Sat., April 20, to 9 a.m. Sun., April 21 -- Closing all eastbound SR 16 lanes at Union Av- enue. -- Closing Union Avenue on-ramp to eastbound SR 16. WSDOT will provide a signed detour directing motorists to exit I-5 at South 56th Street, re-enter northbound I-5, and to access South 38th Street from northbound I-5. With the exception of six hours early Saturday morning, April 20, the southbound I-5 exit to westbound SR 16 (#132B) will remain open. "We know this long ramp closure is an inconve- nience," said Kevin Dayton, WSDOT Olympic region administrator. "We've done all the work we can do while keeping the exit open to traffic. We appreciate everybody's patience while we work as fast as pos- sible to complete and reopen the new ramp." Drivers can expect congestion on I-5 in the vicin- ity of SR 16 during the closure, especially between 3 and 6 p.m. on weekdays. To keep traffic moving, WSDOT encourages motorists to alter their routes and travel times if possible. Up to 9,000 drivers use the South 38th Street exit each day. The Tacoma Historical Society has announced the recipients of this year's Murray Morgan Award and Alan Liddle Award.
