    DEFINITIONSpage defines the terms associated with aircraft accidents and incidents.

    Accident - An occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft which takes place between the time an yperson boards the aircraft with the intention of flight and all such persons have disembarked, and in which an yperson suffers death or serious in jury, or in which the aircraft receives substantial damage.Serious Injury - Any injury which results in a fracture of any bone (except simple fractures of fingers, toes, ornose), or causes severe hemorrhages, or nerve, muscle, or tendon damage, or involves any internal organ, orinvolves second or third degree burns, or an y burns affecting more than 5 percent of the body surface.Substantial D amage - Damage or failure which adversely affects the structural strength, performan ce, or flightcharacteristics of the aircraft an d which would normally require major repair or replacement of the affectedcomponent. Engine failure or damage limited to an engine if only on e engine fails or is damaged, bent fairingsor cowling, dented skin, small punctured holes in the skin or fabric, ground d amage to rotor or propeller blades,and damage to landing gear, wheels, tires, flaps, engine accessories, brakes, or wing tips are not consideredsubstantial d amage for the purpose of this matrix.Incident - An occurrence other than an accident, associated with the operation of an aircraft, which affects orcould affect the safety of the operation.

    Wh en a facility reports an aircraft is overdue, missing, or unreported, the ARTCC in whose area theaircraft is first unreported, will determine the course of action required.
