Sponsored by the Victor E. Bell, III ’74 Endowment Fund, the Portfolio Series invites visiting professional artists and educators from distinguished colleges, universities, and the professional art world to Ravenscroft each year. Artists are selected based on their expertise in a given media as it relates to our art curriculum. In recent years, the Portfolio Series brought painters, printmakers, architects, sculptors, and photographers from higher education programs at Dartmouth College, Swarthmore College, Tyler School of Art, Auburn University, Denison College, University of Pennsylvania and the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Gallery exhibits and visiting artist workshops enhance our curriculum by exposing our students to working artists’ contemporary ideas and techniques. e Visiting Artist Portfolio Series cultivates aesthetic appreciation for the visual arts. Janelle Howington’s paintings will mark our premier exhibition in the gallery this year with a thoughtful and reflective look at portraits. Her search for understanding is recorded in her paintings of her mother and father’s facial expressions while she attempts to capture their individual personalities. Howington will be a visiting artist during the month of September, as part of the Portfolio Series. She will share her knowledge in a workshop with our Upper School students in the art of monotype printing.

Ron Flory and Diana Hooper Bloomfield present their work in a unique exhibition juxtaposing two photographers’ views of change on the environment resulting from neglect and/or outside forces. Ever changing issues, such as the economy and the weather, affect the appearance of the environment in which we live. The photographs document the changes to Franklin and Wake Counties with a sensitive and aesthetic look at the world around us.

Auten will be a visiting artist for the Upper School art classes in October, as part of the Portfolio Series. An architect and artist, Auten will share his knowledge and talent with the students by engaging them in a special drawing project.
