Theres more to help-ing commercial vehicle fleets and owner-operators improve their safety per-formance and reduce acci-dent-related costs than just developing new technolo-gies. Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems recently met with key fleet custom-ers of National Interstate Insurance Company, offer-ing insight on todays safety systems and the regulatory landscape, as part of its on-going efforts to share up-to-date information and techni-cal knowledge with the full range of participants in the U.S. commercial vehicle and transportation industries.

From new equipment to operating standards, the com-mercial vehicle safety envi-ronment today is one of con-stant change and evolution, so communication and knowl-edge sharing are incredibly important tools for everyone, said Fred Andersky, Bendix director of customer solutions Controls Group. Insurance companies like National Inter-state provide opportunities for

their customers to learn about these technologies, serving as a valuable resource to help make commercial vehicles, fleets, and highways safer for everyone.

Headquartered in Rich-field, Ohio, National Inter-state Insurance employs more than 700 people and focuses on customers in specialty insurance mar-kets primarily related to the transportation industry. Andersky spoke to a gath-ering of several National Interstate fleet client groups on Feb. 12, presenting an overview of commercial vehicle safety technologies including driver assistance systems as well as up-coming regulations that could impact the industry.

The more that insurers and their customers know about how technologies like blind spot detection, lane departure warning, and collision mitigation work, and the impact they can have on helping reduce incidents and the sever-ity of incidents, the better

equipped they are to help build awareness of the advantages of advanced safety technologies, and to evaluate their impact on insurance-related costs, Andersky said.

Bendix, the North American leader in the de-velopment and manufac-ture of leading-edge active safety and braking system technologies for commer-cial vehicles, stresses the importance of on-going in-dustry outreach, as well as fleet and owner-operator support, in maximizing highway safety. Driver as-sistance technologies, the company emphasizes, are designed to complement safe drivers, safe driving practices, and proactive driver training programs, not replace them.

Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay and Minister of International Trade Chrystia Freeland announced today that Ukraine has approved beef and pork exports from any Canadian fed-erally registered estab-lishment that meets cer-tification requirements. Following a successful inspection last Septem-ber by Ukrainian au-thorities, 15 additional Canadian beef and pork establishments are now eligible to export, bring-ing the current total to 27.

Canada is committed to strengthening commer-cial ties with Ukraine and securing improved mar-ket access for Canadian exporters. To this end, in July 2015, Canada and Ukraine successfully con-cluded negotiations to-ward the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement (CUFTA). Canada and Ukraine are currently un-dertaking the legal review

of the negotiated text, and once signed, the Par-ties can undertake their respective domestic im-plementation processes. Once fully implemented, the Agreement will re-sult in the elimination of all non-agricultural tar-iffs and the vast majority of Ukraines agricultural tariffs, including on Ca-nadian beef, certain pork, pulses, grains, fish and seafood, canola oil, pro-cessed foods, and animal feed.Quick facts Industry estimates access

Advanced Drainage Sys-tems, Inc. (ADS) (NYSE: WMS) today announced that it has added a low-pro-file, high strength chamber to its StormTech product line. The StormTech SC-160LP Chamber is 12-inch-es tall with an installed volume of 15 cubic feet of water for underground infiltration and detention systems. The new unit requires 14 inches of total cover to carry AASHTO HS-20 live loads, which reduc-es site development costs in shallow applications by minimizing the amount of needed fill and maximizing open infiltrative areas.

Most chambers typi-cally call for around 18 to 24 inches of cover to meet AAS-HTO Load and Resistance Factor Design standards for earth and HS-20 live loads, stated Bob Klein, Executive Vice President of Sales for ADS. But because of the patented truncated ellipse arch, sub-corrugation design and the materials used, our new chamber can be used in

both traffic and non-traffic projects where cover is lim-ited.

ADS developed the new StormTech chamber in re-sponse to the industry need for a chamber that can be used in applications where high water tables are pres-ent or to avoid adding ex-cessive fill to sites.

The SC-160LP adds to the StormTech family of chambers which now offer minimum installed storage capacities ranging from 15 to 179 cubic feet. The newest addition measures 85 inches long x 25 inches wide x 12 inches tall. The SC-160LP chambers require no separation between chamber rows making it easier for the contractor to install and also minimiz-ing the aggregate required. The SC-160LP chamber can be installed using an injec-tion molded 8-inch end cap or using a solid end cap. Both options provide for less costly smaller diameter pipe connections.

StormTech chambers

are designed in accordance with AASHTO and ASTM design standards, qualify-ing them for use in com-mercial and municipal projects. The chambers are designed per industry stan-dards to provide a 75 year service life.

The new ADS Storm-Tech SC-160LP Chamber is 12-inches tall with an installed volume of 15 cu-bic feet of water for under-ground infiltration and de-tention systems. The low profile chamber provides reduced footprint with maximized storage volume for storm water manage-ment systems with shallow cover. b

The B.C. Centre of Training Excellence in Mining (CTEM) has made it easier for British Colum-bians to train for careers in mineral exploration and mining, thanks to a memo-randum of understanding signed today with five pub-lic post-secondary institu-tions in the province.

The agreement initiates a pilot project that will of-fer students the opportu-nity to complete up to a full year of the British Colum-bia Institute of Technology (BCIT) mineral exploration and mining technology di-ploma at the following in-stitutions:The College of New Cale-

donia (CNC),Northwest Community

College (NWCC),Okanagan College (OC)

andThompson Rivers Uni-

versity (TRU).Students who complete

the diploma program can also apply their education toward a degree in mining and mineral resources en-

gineering at BCIT.CTEM was announced

in November 2012 and launched on May 23, 2013. Hosted by NWCC, CTEM is a province-wide virtual hub that connects the min-ing and mineral industries, communities and public post-secondary institutions throughout the province to ensure students receive tar-geted training that will give them in-demand skills for these industries.

Since 2012, the Ministry of Advanced Education has provided $500,000 in op-erating support to CTEM for coordination of mining training at public post-sec-ondary institutions in the province.

Minister of Advanced Education Andrew Wilkin-son This pilot project will give more students the opportunity to take the first-year of a diploma in mining and mineral ex-ploration at five public post-secondary institutions throughout B.C. Employers and the public post-sec-

Several years in the making and designed with direct customer feedback, John Deere is introduc-ing four Final Tier 4 G-Series skid steers (312GR, 314G, 316GR, 318G) and one compact track loader (317G). These new ma-chines were designed to level the playing field for

todays rental, ag mate-rial handling, construction and landscape customers. The five models, including three vertical and two radi-al-lift options, boast big re-liability and serviceability, and are full of customer-requested features aimed at improving operator and machine productivity, and uptime, and lowering daily

operating costs. With the addition of

these new G-Series mod-els, John Deere now of-fers a full line of skid steers and compact track loaders to meet the qual-ity, performance and price point needs of todays customer, said Gregg Zu-pancic, product market-ing manager, John Deere Construction & Forestry. Customer input led to in-creased durability, higher engine power, improved fuel capacity and updated cab and productivity fea-tures, so when customers

buy or rent a John Deere G-Series machine, it isnt just an easy decision, its one they can make with total confidence.

The G-Series machines feature an improvement in horsepower-to-weight ratios and an optimized boom de-sign that enables lift heights over 10 feet on the vertical lift models and a 20 percent increase in breakout forces on the radial-lift models. With the option of a radial or vertical lift, customers can now choose the Deere system that best fits their ap-plication needs.

The new vertical-lift de-sign on the 314G (51 hp), 318G (65 hp) and 317G (65 hp) provides excellent all-around visibility with clear sight lines both above and below the boom to en-able easier grading in tight spaces, plus the low-profile rear-hood design expands rear views.

The radial-lift option used on the 312GR (51 hp) and 316GR (61 hp) offers an exclusive one-person boom lockout system for safety that can be activated from within the cab. The lift system is designed for lower maintenance and op-timal digging performance, and is ideal when more reach is needed at mid-range lift heights such as dumping over a foundation wall, backfilling or load-ing a flatbed trailer. These machines are also ideal for work in small areas or in-door operations.

The 316GR, 318G and 317G offer 24 percent more engine power and all G-Series machines pro-vide 11 percent additional fuel capacity over previ-ous models for daylong productivity and uptime. A durable, high-perfor-mance Yanmar Final Tier 4 engine and hydraulic powertrain provide maxi-mum pushing power, and boom and bucket pro-ductivity. The optimized power-to-weight ratio also helps deliver more usable power, resulting in faster cycle times on the job site.

John Deere designed an all-new operator sta-tion for the G-Series, fea-turing many of the same comfort, space and visibil-ity refinements originally introduced on the E-Series machines. A swing-out cab door creates a wide-open entryway and flat floors allow easier entry and exit, along with more foot and legroom. The cabs and floors are sealed and pressurized to keep out dust and excess noise, and a footwell clean-out makes debris manage-ment easier than ever, minimizing costly mainte-nance and downtime.

The new skid steer econ-omy models 312GR (radial lift) and 314G (vertical lift) were purpose built for sim-plicity, reliability and du-rability, and include a key set of standard features for the entry-level customer. The higher performance 316GR and 318G models offer several customer-driven features, including

2-speed, air-conditioning, electrohydraulic (EH) joy-stick controls, an enhanced lighting package and a new self-level and ride control combination that features shock-absorbing boom cyl-inders that cushion bumps, helping retain full bucket loads while navigating over rough terrain.

Flexible control choices on the 316GR and 318G al-low contractors to choose between standard foot and hand controls, optional hands-only controls or en-hanced (EH) joystick con-trols that are switchable be-tween ISO- and H-patterns.

New John Deere Small-Frame Skid Steer & Compact Track Loaders


On February 1st First Nations governments and the BC government, with the support of ForestEth-ics Solutions, Greenpeace, Sierra Club BC and five forestry companies, an-nounced the fulfilment of the Great Bear Rainforest Agreements. Eighty-five percent (3.1 million hect-ares) of the remote wil-derness regions coastal temperate rainforests are now permanently off-lim-its to industrial logging. The remaining 15 percent (550,000 hectares) of the forest will be subject to the most stringent com-mercial logging legal stan-dards in North America. First Nations oversight of their lands has been strengthened and new community development opportunities negotiated as a result of the govern-ment-to-government im-plementation process.

The fulfilment of the Great Bear Rainforest Agreements, announced within days of the launch

10 years ago, will protect biodiversity and help mitigate climate change, support improved com-munity well-being, and provide economic cer-tainty to the forestry sec-tor. The success of the Agreements represents a milestone for collabo-ration between govern-ments, the environmen-tal organizations and forestry companies.

The Great Bear Rain-forest Agreements is one of the most visionary for-est conservation plans on Earth, says Valerie Langer, ForestEthics So-lutions Director. It is a principled approach that sets a new legal and sci-ence-based standard for sustaining healthy forests and maintains intact, old-growth that will keep mil-lions of tonnes of carbon out of the atmosphere.

The realization of the Agreements proves their value as a model for col-laboration, conservation, communities and climate

action says Jens Wiet-ing, forest and climate campaigner for Sierra Club BC. Implementa-tion of the Agreements strengthens the resil-ience of communities and secures the ecologi-cal integrity of an ancient and vastly rich network of forests, fjords and is-lands twice the size of Vancouver Island.

After five years of in-tense conflict, followed by 15 years of intensive collaboration and nego-tiation, the new model of conservation manage-ment is informed by sci-ence, First Nations rights over their lands, and stakeholder input. The goal of this unique con-servation approach is to maintain healthy forests and high levels of com-munity well-being across the entire 6.4 million hectare Great Bear Rain-forest, an area the size of Nova Scotia.

BCs coastal old-growth rainforests store record high amounts of carbon per hectare accu-mulated over thousands of years and continue to sequester carbon. In-creased protection of old-growth forests will

result in an immediate reduction of carbon loss-es from logging.

The five members of the industry group that worked together with the environmental organi-

zations as stakeholders to support the process are Interfor Corporation, Western Forest Prod-ucts, BC Timber Sales, Catalyst Paper and Howe Sound Pulp and Paper.

All parties involved are committed to Annual Monitoring reports and a five-year and ten-year re-view mechanism. b

Minerals Technologies Inc., (NYSE: MTX) has signed a commercial agree-ment with a prestigious European papermaker to provide Fulfill E-325 high-filler technology at the paper companys mill in Europe. This is the second agreement for the deploy-ment of the FulFill technol-ogy at this paper mill.

Minerals Technologies now has 24 agreements with paper mills that have adopted the Fulfill tech-nology that the company introduced in late 2010. The company has nine agreements with paper companies in Asia; eight in North America; six in Europe; and one in South America.

We are delighted that this highly respected Eu-ropean papermaker has signed a second agreement to use our technology, which will allow them to produce high quality paper at lower cost, said Joseph C. Muscari, chairman and chief executive officer.

These agreements con-firm the commercial prog-ress of the Fulfill brand, a portfolio of high-filler technologies that offers papermakers a variety of efficient, flexible solutions that decreases dependen-cy on natural fibre and reduces costs. The Fulfill E-325 series allows paper-makers to increase load-ing levels of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) by three to five points, which replaces higher cost pulp, and increases PCC usage between 20 to 30 percent.

We are engaged with approximately 20 other paper mills to introduce our FulFill technology, as well as our breakthrough NewYield(TM) Integrated Process Technology that converts a papermaking waste stream into a use-able filler, said Rand Mendez, senior vice presi-dent & managing director, Paper PCC. Through con-tinued innovation, MTI is advancing our leadership

in technology that can re-duce costs and improve quality for the worldwide paper industry.

PCC is a specialty pig-ment for filling and coat-ing high-quality paper. By substituting Minerals Tech-nologies PCC for more expensive wood fibre, cus-tomers are able to produce brighter, higher quality pa-per at lower cost. Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence Ma-cAulay and Manitoba Ag-riculture, Food and Rural Development Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced an investment of nearly $380,000 for a potato pro-cessing plant in Carberry to increase efficiency, reduce waste and support the sus-tainable growth of Mani-tobas potato industry.

The governments in-vestment, provided under Manitobas Growing For-ward 2 Growing Value pro-gram, will be used to install new and innovative equip-ment at the McCain Foods Canadas facility. The plant processes about 430 mil-lion pounds of Manitoba-grown potatoes every year, mostly into French fries. The upgrades will reduce potato and canola oil waste by 900,000 pounds and 800,000 pounds per year, respectively.

The governments in-vestment represents half of the total equipment cost. McCain Foods Canada has

invested more than $30 million in other upgrades to the Carberry facility over the last 10 years, including a $23 million waste wa-ter upgrade. This potato processing plant employs about 220 people, with another 10 positions to be created over the next three years as a result of the new equipment.

Manitoba is Canadas second-largest potato pro-ducer behind PEI, sup-porting 120 potato grow-ers and employing 1,500 full-time and casual work-ers. In 2013, 70,000 acres of potatoes were grown in Manitoba valued at about $192 million. 80 per cent of potatoes processed in Manitoba are exported to the U.S. making this crop a valuable trade commod-ity.

The Growing Value program provides finan-cial assistance to existing agri-businesses that need to make changes to adapt to market forces and envi-ronmental considerations,

to increase their ability to compete in domestic and international markets.

The federal and pro-vincial governments are investing a total of $176 million in cost-shared pro-gramming in Manitoba under Growing Forward 2, a five-year, federal-provin-cial-territorial policy frame-work to advance the agri-culture industry, helping producers and processors become more innovative and competitive in world markets.

Minister Kostyshyn noted this investment also supports the Manitoba gov-ernments goal of creating a $5.5 billion food processing industry by 2022, which is currently valued at $4.95 billion.Quotes

H N Construction Pvt. Ltd. of Bokaro Steel City, India, took delivery of a new Terex Explorer 5800 all-terrain crane during a special handover presenta-tion held on January 28, 2016. The crane is the first of its kind in India and will significantly enhance the service offerings and en-hance jobsite performance for H N Construction Pvt. Ltd.

Terex Director of Cranes India, Sales and Service, Saeesh Nevrekar, had the honor of presenting the cranes key to H N Con-struction Pvt. Ltd. Manag-ing Director, Rajnish Gau-tam. The companys new Terex Explorer 5800 crane is a 5-axle, all-wheel steer

carrier that is just 13.2 m long and 3 m wide and is configured with a 70 m boom and 21 m fixed jib. The crane is designed so that the 70.2 t counter-weight can be automatical-ly rigged helping to reduce setup time.

The Terex Explorer 5800 crane also employs a single engine concept that uses the latest engine manage-ment system to enhance performance for both road travel and lifting. Fuel effi-ciency is maximized using stop/start technology for the upper cabin and engine remapping depending on what type of operation is being performed, lifting or traveling. And, the Terex IC-1 touch screen control system, along with radio remote control, makes rig-ging and on-site operation safe and efficient. The con-trol system provides the operator with accurate load moment measurements and wind speeds and sim-plifies the way the crane operates when handling

the most demanding lifts. We selected the Terex

Explorer 5800 because of its versatility and compact size, as well as the reputa-tion Terex has for quality and service after the sale, explains Rajnish Gautam. It is our first Terex Crane, but we plan to add more in the future. This unit will be put to work right away on the campus of Bokaro Steel Plant, one of oldest and largest steel plants in India. b

Tower crane manu-facturer Linden Comansa and German dealer BKL Baukran Logistik GmbH will exhibit together at Bauma 2016, the worlds largest and most important construction machinery trade show, to be held in Munich, Germany, from April 11th to 17th 2016. It will be the second time that both companies pres-ent their products and ser-vices at a common space at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre, after the successful experience at the last edi-tion of Bauma.

According to Alberto Munrriz, CEO of Linden Comansa, exhibiting with BKL in 2013 brought more business to both compa-nies while our partnership grew stronger, so teaming up again for 2016 was a wise and easy decision.

In 2016, Linden Co-mansa and BKL will share a total area of 784 square meters, which is the largest space ever booked by any of both exhibitors. Booth

1103/1, located in the open air area, will host some tower cranes from Linden Comansas wide range. BKL will show a selection of its products and crane related services in a wel-coming atmosphere.

The co-operation of both companies started in 2011, when BKL bought its first Linden Comansa tower cranes. The first package of four 21 LC 290 and two 11 LC 160 succeeded the field-test that focused on the service and the spare parts supply, as well as on the cranes reliability, which are key factors for BKL. Ac-cording to the positive ex-perience, BKL invested in further cranes.

After Bauma 2013 the partnership grew stronger and BKL deployed further investments in trainings and the expansion of the BKL spare part depots. Re-cently the German crane specialist enlarged its crane park by two 11 LC 90, two 11 LC 160 and two 16 LC 260. BKLs sale and rental

fleet therefore includes now Linden Comansa cranes from 90 up to 750 metre-tonnes.

BKL Baukran Logistik GmbH is one of Europes largest crane rentals, sales and service companies with more than 350 tow-er cranes and nearly 50 mobile cranes in its fleet. Headquartered in Munich, BKL is represented by further branch offices in Ingolstadt, Frankfurt and Hannover. b

The price for crude oil is falling, and the diesel price is following. This development is triggered partly by the demand side, as Chinas economy is not growing as quickly as expected. We can how-ever see a more interest-ing development on the supply side. OPEC is sit-ting on the drivers seat of the recent oil price

tumble. The price of the OPEC basket of twelve crudes recently fell below USD 28.50 per barrel. A dumping-like strategy by OPEC seems to be aimed at preventing long-term investment by other oil producing nations. An oil price in the twenties means hardly a dozen na-tions can produce oil eco-nomically. Similar conse-quences arise for related energy forms, such as re-newables.

In solar and winddiesel hybrid applications, the business case consists of partly replacing expen-

sive energy from diesel with inexpensive solar or wind energy. As die-sel prices are falling, the equation seems to be no longer valid. On closer examination, we see that mining companies that typically have huge en-ergy needs for their pro-duction processes can actually take advantage of the situation. More and more investors are willing to finance large solar and wind power plants at re-mote mine sites and sell diesel reductions or elec-tricity back to miners in so-called power purchase agreements (PPAs). When the oil prices were high, the investors were looking at much higher electricity prices in these long-term PPAs. High diesel prices
