In response to increas-ing demand for specialty land clearing equipment, Bandit Industries has en-hanced its line of track car-riers. Leading the charge is the all-new Model 3750.

Designed to operate with extremely low ground pressure, this all-new ma-chine can be equipped with either a mulching forestry mower head, or a hydro-static stump grinding head. The Model 3750 combines the smaller size and lighter weight of the Model 3500 with the larger cab and forestry mower head of the Model 4000, and it rides on a CAT 315 undercarriage with 800mm-wide pads. This gives the Model 3750 a ground pressure of just 3.9 PSI.

Weve had requests from numerous customers for a high-powered forest-ry mower that can better traverse soft and sensitive ground, said Jason Morey, Bandits Large and Small Equipment Sales Manager. The Model 3750 was built

precisely for this purpose, but its also proven to be an excellent machine for general-purpose land clear-ing thanks to the wide tracks and lower weight.

The Model 3750 is avail-able with up to 275 horse-power and features an 84-inch wide Bandit-designed forestry mower than can mulch up to a height of 72 inches. Like all Bandit track carriers, the Model 3750 features a deluxe op-erators cab that includes a six-way adjustable seat, electronic controls with state-of-the-art monitoring systems, rear-view cam-eras, on-board audio sys-tems, and full climate con-trol for operator comfort in all environments. The Model 3750 cab tilts for-ward for convenient access to vital hydraulic systems, allowing for easy mainte-nance. An interchangeable 40-inch diameter stump grinder wheel is also avail-able.

The Model 3750 joins an expanding line of dedi-

cated land clearing ma-chines from Bandit Indus-tries. After an extensive period of field evaluation, the compact Model 3000 is also gaining consider-able popularity as a light-weight, highly mobile land clearing machine ideally suited for construction site and right-of-way clearing where space is limited. Featuring up to 142 horse-power, a dedicated 72-inch wide forestry mower and a CAT 307 steel-track under-carriage, the Model 3000 can easily power through material while reaching ar-eas difficult to access with larger machines.

What weve been hear-ing most on the Model 3000 is its usable power and capability compared to its size, said Morey. Most machines using a mulching head of this size have less horsepower. With the CAT undercarriage and avail-able power, there really isnt any other clearing ma-chine in the same category as the Model 3000.

The Model 3000 and Model 3750 join the Model 3500, Model 4000 and Model 5000 in Ban-dits track carrier line-up. All are ROPS/FOPS/

A scant two years af-ter its launch in Canada, a new cement type that results in 10% lower CO2 emissions is rapidly becoming the preferred standard for the ma-jority of new concrete construction projects in British Columbia and al-ready contributing to a better quality air shed in the lower mainland.

The BC Cement In-dustry reports that Con-tempra now accounts for nearly 50 per cent of the domestic cement con-sumed in the province. This rate will accelerate as more and more devel-opers and builders spec-ify the carbon-reduced cement for their new projects.

The rapid rate of con-version to Contempra-based concrete achieved to date in BC means that some 23,000 tonnes of GHGs per year have been taken out of the atmosphere, which is the equivalent to saving 9,760,000 litres of gaso-

line or not burning 9,800 tonnes of coal.

Contempra is a shin-ing example of the ce-ment industrys con-tinued commitment to innovation and to low-ering our collective en-vironmental footprint, said Michael McSwee-ney, President and CEO of the Cement Asso-ciation of Canada. We are delighted with the markets enthusiastic response and with the tremendous strides both Lafarge and Lehigh Han-son have made in estab-lishing this lower carbon cement as the cement of choice in British Colum-bia.

Contempra further reduces the environ-mental footprint of con-crete structures, which, according to life cycle assessment studies con-ducted by the Massachu-setts Institute of Technol-ogy and the University of British Columbia, is al-ready lower than that of those constructed with

other building materials, thanks to concretes du-rability and the energy efficiency benefits of its thermal mass.

When you combine the use of Contempra with the innate thermal abilities of concrete, which save consumers money in heating and cooling, and with the durability and long life of concrete, it is easy to see that concrete is the building material of choice for those who are concerned with cleaner air, energy efficiency and of course safety, added Mr. McSweeney.

Among the many Contempra projects al-ready completed or un-derway in BC are the Ar-thur Erickson Building, the Wall Centre False Creek Development and ONNIs Evelyn master-planned community, all in Vancouver, as well as a multitude of con-dominium, commercial and institutional projects throughout the province.

The lower carbon ce-ment is manufactured by Lafarge in its Richmond cement plant and by Le-high Hanson in its Delta cement plant. b

Terex Minerals Process-ing Systems (MPS) has launched the new MC1300 Cone Module in response to customer feedback, in-creasing the application and production capabili-ties of its existing modular product range.

The modular product line consists of several pre-designed static and semi-static crushing and screening plug and play modules. Set-up time and ease of operation is aided by the simple design of the modular product range. Each module bolts together on site and requires mini-mal on-site wiring. Mark Crooks, Modular Product

Line Manager commented, With the addition of the MC1300 to our modular product line, we are now able to offer customers increased production and greater application capa-bilities. The MC1300 Cone Module can be matched with other units in the modular product line to create a system capable of processing up to 270 mtph.

The MC1300 Cone Module features the robust Terex TC1300 (1300mm) cone crusher powered by a 225 kW electric mo-tor. An unrestricted feed opening and a full range of configurations for short

and long throw give the TC1300 high versatil-ity. The all roller bearing design improves crush-ing efficiency. Additional TC1300 features include hydraulically adjustable closed-side setting, easy manganese changes, and a weather-protected control panel with user-friendly controls. Other key fea-tures of the MC1300 Mod-ule include an extra heavy-duty I-beam frame and a galvanized steel structure including walkways, steps, and guard rails. The mod-ule structure and all its components are CE com-pliant.

For more information on Terex Minerals Pro-cessing Systems crushing and screening products or customer support please contact your local distribu-tor. Details can be found at www.terexmps.com. b

New Terex MC1300 Cone Module Increases Production Capabilities

Sales of U.S. new homes rose in June to the highest level in five years, a solid sign that B.C. lumber pro-ducers can expect demand for lumber to keep rising, say industry analysts.

Our mills are hiding their smiles behind their caps right now, because its looking pretty good, said Keta Kosman, Pub-lisher of Madisons Lumber Reporter. For B.C. lumber, this is a leading indicator there will be new home building.

Purchases climbed 8.3% to an annualized pace of 497,000 homes, the highest level since May 2008, the U.S. commerce department said this week.

    Although theres still

uncertainty over real estate sales, banks and mortgage rates, momentum is begin-ning to build, Kosman said, adding that raises another concern milling capacity is down from where it was seven or eight years ago because numerous saw-mills have shut down.

One thing analysts havent said much about is the supply-demand situ-ation on the logging and trucking side of the indus-try. As market demand for lumber rises, well hit a point where there arent enough contractors to get all the required harvest-ing done. Lack of contrac-tors will be a bigger threat than milling capacity, and if theres a lesson in the

above, its that forest com-panies would be wise to solidify their contractor support to ensure enough logs can be delivered be-fore they worry about mill expansions. With lumber prices rising, the old cry poor tactic doesnt work. Its time to get serious about paying logging rates that are profitable enough to keep loggers anchored in forestry instead of heading to other resource industries where the pay and the op-portunities are better. b

his first tree in 1975, and helped turn the indus-try into what it is today. Since taking ownership of A&G Reforestation in 1984, Chris has been a strong advocate for high employment standards and industry-best practic-es. He has played a lead role in developing safety and training initiatives for the BC Forest Industry through his ongoing work with the Western Silvicul-ture Contractors Associa-tion and the development of the Safe Silviculture Program.

Some of the work Chris has supported has created the Resource Road Driv-ing, ATV, Supervisor and Powersaw training cours-es; and resources to re-duce MSI injuries and im-prove emergency response in remote locations.

In receiving his award, Chris paid tribute to the people who had inspired him. As much as things

have changed, he encour-aged everyone to keep the pressure on to get to zero by working together to promote safety in the industry.

Don Banasky received the Forest Safety MVP of the Year award. This award recognizes an in-

dividual or group that has made a notable contri-bution to forest industry safety within their opera-tion or company in 2013.

Don has had a long com-mitment to safety. It has not only been at the top of his list with the companies he has worked for, but he

has volunteered his servic-es to help others improve their safety programs.

In 1994, Don joined TimberWest Forest Corp. and worked as a Choker-man, Rigging Slinger, Hooktender, and a me-chanical processor opera-

In recognition of their outstanding contributions to furthering safety, two BC forestry leaders recently received awards from the BC Forest Safety Council (BCFSC).

More than 400 for-estry and industry-relat-ed conference attendees watched as Reynold Hert, Chair & CEO, BCFSC pre-sented the annual safety awards to Chris Akehurst and Don Banasky at the annual Vancouver Island Safety Conference held on October 5, 2013.

Chris Akehurst re-ceived the Cary White Lifetime Achievement Award. The award is pre-sented to an individual

who, through a long ca-reer in the forest industry, has demonstrated an un-wavering commitment to improving safety aware-ness, expanding safety knowledge, developing safety skills at ground lev-el and building a lasting culture of safety among BCs forest workers. This individual is known for being a teacher of safety, a trainer, an instructor, a mentor someone who goes the extra mile to help others reach their safety goals with a helping hand, proven experience and knowledge.

tor. In 2002, along with Bryan Gregson he launched FallTech Logging Ltd., which provided mechani-cal falling and bunching services of a million cubic meters a year. At this time he also began D. Banasky Logging Consultants Ltd., which focused on proj-ect management, safety, and systems development, team building and training.

FallTech Logging Ltd. was purchased by The Gregson Group and Don continues to provide con-sulting and management

service to both companies. Don acts as general fore-man for Copcan Contract-ing Ltd., and is involved in many capacities including safety implementation.

He serves as a Vice Pres-ident of the Truck Loggers Association (TLA) and sits on numerous committees, including the Steep Slope Advisory Committee, Inci-dent investigation Advisory Committee, Safety Training and Industrial Relations Committee, and various other safety committees in the hopes of making a difference in the Forest In-

dustry in BC and abroad. In 2013, Don has been part of the working team over-hauling SAFE Certification into an updated, industry owned certification system to reduce fatalities and seri-ous injuries in the BC For-est Industry.

As a result of his safety and leadership experience, Don has been asked to visit and speak to groups in the United Kingdom and New Zealand on integrating safety, quality and produc-tion in forestry contracting operations.

In accepting the award, Don thanked Copcan for allowing him to participate in industry safety initia-tives that keep our work-ers, friends and families safe. He reminded every-one that they just had to look around the room to see all the personal con-nections and why safety is so important. He encour-aged and challenged ev-eryone to get back to the basics and go beyond the stereotypes of rough tough forestry folk that dont talk, and really communicate. Acknowledge people as individuals, speak up for safety and speak up for co-workers. b

THE FINEST BUCKETS, SYSTEMS, TRAINING AND DESIGN!

In countries where low-grade ore bodies re-main and labour costs are relatively high, such as Canada, US and Sweden, the small, low-tonnage mining operation has vir-tually disappeared. The industry has moved to high-tonnage, low-grade operations, which require larger equipment with a low operating cost and high throughput.

As a result, there is even greater importance on integrated processing solutions or communi-tion packages, including screening technology. Once a minor design op-tion, screen technology now has a significant im-pact on mine processing operations.

The interdependence requires that all unit pro-cesses be optimized and

aligned for maximum ca-pacity, efficiency and utili-zation. Capital investments can be minimized without compromising productivity or increasing maintenance costs.

Mine operators should be evaluating the separa-tion effectiveness, durabili-ty and overall maintenance costs when evaluating dif-ferent screening technolo-gies.

When an improper se-lection of a screen occurs, operators are forced to com-promise the production and cost targets of other equip-ment in the plant. b

The Value Of Screening Technology In Communition Process

At least half of Canadas vast boreal forest should be strictly protected from any kind of development, and the rest should be carefully managed to preserve or re-store its ecological integrity, a panel of top North Ameri-can researchers argues in a recently released report.

The International Boreal Conservation Science Panel describes the boreal forest, which covers more than half of Canadas 9.9-mil-lion-sq.-km landmass, as one of the worlds great-est natural treasures along with the Siberian boreal forest and the Amazon

rainforest. The panel says it is one

of the last three significant stretches of forested land on Earth that has never been touched by the large-scale footprint of human industrial expansion and it warns that forestry, min-ing and energy projects across Canada including Albertas oilsands are transforming huge swaths of the boreal frontier, de-stroying wildlife habitat, disrupting ancient animal migration patterns, threat-ening water quality and generally compromising ecosystems.

The researchers cite studies showing that some 730,000 square kms of Canadas boreal forest an area larger than Texas is already affected by these industries and their infrastructure, including roads and hydro dams.

Iconic species such as the woodland caribou have disappeared from the southern tier of the bo-real forest and other sig-nature wildlife of Canadas forests wolverine, griz-zly bear and wolf are in trouble, the panel states.

The panels key recom-mendation is that a full 50% of the boreal for-est should be set aside as permanent wild land a much more aggressive con-servation target than ex-perts have previously pro-posed. b

Save The Forest Initiative On A Huge Scale

A specialized micro chip drum from Bandit Indus-tries is now available for select Bandit whole tree chippers. The new drum design features double the knives found on a standard drum, delivering twice the cuts per rotation to pro-duce wood chips as small as 3/16 in size. The micro chip drum can also be eas-ily converted to a normal chipping configuration

for standard sized chips, allowing users to conve-niently produce several dif-ferent chip sizes to serve multiple markets.

Bandit chippers are al-ready known for producing a great chip, but with bio-mass markets expanding rapidly around the world, we knew it was time to take an extra step for our cus-tomers, said Bandit Indus-tries President Jerry Morey.

Chip size certainly mat-ters, but it usually comes at a cost of machine efficiency and performance. We set out to build a chipper that could make the best micro chip on the market without giving up the performance people expect from Bandit. And thats exactly what we have with our new micro chip drum.

The micro chip drum works in conjunction with Bandits flow control op-tion for the feed system, which fine-tunes the feed rate of the machine to achieve minimum chip size with maximum production and fuel efficiency. A new chip breaker system fur-ther enhances chip qual-ity, serving to screen and break down oversize mate-rial exiting the drum. The end result is a specifically sized micro chip that is un-matched in consistency.

Chip throwing power is unaffected by the design changes. The Bandit mi-cro chip drum and breaker

system allow chips to exit the machine at high veloci-ties without the need for a separate blower or chip ac-celerator.

The combination of aggressive feed systems,

smooth chipping and strong chip throwing adds to the overall efficiency of Bandits whole tree chip-pers using the micro chip drum. Compared to similar machines producing micro chips, Bandit whole tree

chippers are averaging 33 percent better on fuel econ-omy based on testing and customer feedback.

Customers using our micro chip drum are con-sistently telling us just how hard the machine throws

the chips, just like our stan-dard whole tree chippers, said Morey. They are also reporting fuel consumption rates of roughly three tons per gallon depending on the material, and throw-ing 40 to 50 loads per a

set of knives isnt a prob-lem. Were very pleased with the responses weve received on the micro chip drum. Its the ideal setup to serve any fuel wood market anywhere in the world.

The Bandit micro chip drum is an available option for the Model 2590, Model

3090 and Model 3590 whole tree chippers. The drum and accompanying systems can also be retrofitted to existing Bandit whole tree chippers. For more infor-mation, contact Bandit In-dustries at 800-952-0178 or visit online at www.bandit chippers.com. b

GE Intelligent Platforms (NYSE: GE) recently an-nounced the immediate availability of its break-through manufacturing execution management software solution, Proficy for Manufacturing Discrete (PfMD). This powerful solution designed specifi-cally for complex discrete manufacturing environ-ments takes manufactur-ing execution to a new level through complete digitization of paper-based processes.

Manufacturers of com-plex products in industries such as Aerospace, Energy Equipment and Heavy Ma-chinery, face particular challenges in reducing pro-duction cycle times, while maintaining quality and meeting regulatory require-ments due to long produc-tion cycles. Proficy for Man-ufacturing Discrete provides digitized standard operating procedures, advanced dis-patch capabilities and struc-tured capture of quality data to support real-time decision making and continuous pro-cess improvement, espe-cially in complex, engineer-to-order and build-to-order environments.

Wacker Neuson hosted its second annual contract-ed dealer summit at the companys North Ameri-can manufacturing facility and corporate headquar-ters in Menomonee Falls, WI, October 1-3, 2013. The highlights of the event included the much antici-pated unveiling of Wacker Neusons new skid-steer line for the North American market and the chance for one lucky dealer to win the first unit off the production line.

    Over 150 people rep-

resenting 100 companies from the United States and Canada gathered in Wack-er Neusons manufacturing plant to hear Christopher Barnard, President and CEO of Wacker Neuson Corp., explain the strategy for the development and production of the skid steer product line. As Barnard explained, We have the vision, commitment and execution to complete this critical piece of the puzzle for our product line. With the addition of our new skid-steer line, we can now

offer dealers the most com-prehensive and competi-tively unique line of light and compact equipment in the industry.

Barnard unveiled the new skid and track load-ers after explaining to the dealers and employees that many options were consid-ered to bring a quality skid-steer line to the market, concluding with, Wacker Neuson decided for its own development in order to control the design, the manufacturing, the quality, and the cost, which will

benefit us all. We are confi-dent that these new models will exemplify the quality and durability that the in-dustry associates with the Wacker Neuson brand, Barnard said.

Wacker Neuson has more than 10 years of ex-perience in designing and manufacturing skid steer loaders for the European market. The requirements of the customers in the U.S. are different and North America is the biggest skid-steer market in the world. Thats the reason why we decided to design a product line for this important mar-ket, said Martin Lehner, CTO of Wacker Neuson SE.

The design of the SSL models will be done jointly between Wacker Neusons facility in Hoersching, Austria and Menomonee Falls, Wis., USA. The new models will officially hit the market at CONEXPO, March 4-8, 2014, in Las Ve-gas with two skid steer and two track loaders offered in a variety of packages and price ranges to fit the North American market.

After getting their first look at the SSL product

line, the machines were moved to the dirt where dealers could operate the machines. These ma-chines look and feel ro-bust and tough, said Sam Eaton, Vice President and General Manager, Knick-erbocker Russell Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. Its a nice looking machine and was very responsive, comfort-able with easy to reach controls. The 75-horse-power engine had all the power it needed. The cab is ergonomically pleas-ing and the best Ive ever seen. It took only a few minutes to get the hang of it. Eaton said.

Jeff Barnes, CEO of Barnsco, Dallas, Texas, said, We were looking for a quality skid-steer to go into our rental line and this certainly fits that require-ment. It is a well-designed, comfortable unit that is capable of meeting the de-mands of any job.

A real highlight of the two-day dealer event was the opportunity for an at-tendee of the meeting to enter a drawing to win the first machine off the pro-duction line. The winner

was Ryan Ouye, General Manager, Service Rentals and Supply, Maui, Hi. As a result of his win, Ouye and his company will also give back to the community. He explained, The winning skid steer will go into our rental fleet and half of the rental revenue will be do-nated to a local non-profit. Our employees will be able to choose which organiza-tion will receive the dona-tion.

The Wacker Neuson compact equipment prod-uct range includes track and wheeled excavators, articulated and all-wheel steer wheel loaders and dumpers. Wacker Neuson is well known for its light equipment products, such as rammers, plates, rollers, breakers, heaters, genera-tors, light towers, trowels, concrete vibrators and more. The companys U.S. operation was established more than 50 years ago and its complete line of prod-ucts are sold and rented by a network of dealers and supported by an industry leading team of factory trained sales, application and service personnel. b

agement, labor tracking, WIP management, manu-facturing instructions for operations.

Genealogy and Trace-ability features of PfMD capture a permanent re-cord of as-built product data, including the mate-rial/BOMs, along with all quality data and routes/operations. The solution also captures quality data associated with the prod-

uct and/or process through quality forms and config-ures the qualifications and/or certifica
