The contribution of plas-tic pipe systems to sustain-able development will be one of the key discussion points at the upcoming Plas-tic Pipes XVII Conference and Exhibition in Chicago. Evidence from environmen-tal assessments carried out by independent technical institutes will underline the advantages of these sys-tems. Furthermore, recent sustainable developments for mitigating flooding, seis-mic events, creating high-yield horticulture and trans-forming desert landscapes will be considered.

In Europe, a wide range of plastic pipe systems have been assessed for their en-vironmental impact and carbon footprint. Commis-sioned by The European Plastic Pipes and Fittings Association (TEPPFA), these technical studies that em-brace Life Cycle Assessments will be presented at the Chi-cago conference. They will confirm the low environ-mental impact of plastic pipe systems compared to non-plastic pipe systems.

The scope and scale of flooding and drought throughout the world have prompted innovative plas-tic pipe solutions to manage and harvest rainwater under such increasingly unpredict-able conditions. Conference attendees will learn how plastic pipe technology is now being used in Australia to offset extensive flooding. This solution was applied following an overflow of the Morwell River that caused USD 400 million of damage to infrastructure and put the electricity supply to over one million homes in Victoria at risk. Case evidence from China and India will also show how innovative pipe solutions such as trenchless technology are offsetting the worst effects of flooding. Sustainable goals

As the World Football Cup recently took cen-tre stage, few spectators wouldve been aware that in 2006, the host nation of Germany employed plastic storm water boxes below the playing field to avoid water logged conditions above. In Chicago, partici-pants will appreciate how

these devices are now be-ing widely used in other countries to prevent flood-ing, land erosion and sub-sidence as well as harvest precious rainwater for use in times of drought.

Plastic pipe technol-ogy is also being used as a sustainable solution to maintaining nationwide utility services in the event of earthquakes and trem-ors. Evidence from recent events in New Zealand and Japan will underline just how the flexibility of plas-tic pipe systems can with-stand the shocks and how more rigid pipe materials are subject to failure under such conditions.

Greening the desert from within may seem a fanciful idea. However, in Saudi Arabia, the UAE and the countries that border the Sahara Desert desalina-tion has become a work in practice. Various approach-es are now being applied and results are both effec-

tive and innovative. One particular idea is the use of simple PVC pipes for ver-tical horticulture in tropi-cal climates. Fewer acres are now achieving higher yields of produce such as tomatoes and lettuces.

With operator needs at the forefront of design and engineering, Vermeer has introduced a new horizontal directional drill with improved power and reliability for the increas-ingly demanding projects contractors face. The new D20x22 S3 Navigator HDD was designed from the voice of contractors who desire a small footprint ma-chine yet one that is able to increase productivity when working in urban or tight jobsites.

Compared to its prede-cessor, the D16x20 Series II, Vermeer added power and improved precision control for those custom-ers who work mainly in fiber/telecom and gas ser-vice installation, said Jon Kuyers, Global Product Manager for Underground Business at Vermeer. We listened to our customers and developed a machine to help them be more pro-ductive.

The D20x22 S3 features 19,550 pounds (8,875.7

kg) of thrust/pullback with 2,200 ft-lb (2,983.2 Nm) of torque. The 74-horsepower (55 kW) Deutz engine is ca-pable of 12 percent greater power compared to its pre-decessor, the D16x20 Se-ries II. All new models that feature the S3 label are Tier 4 Final (Stage IV) emis-sion compliant in North America and Europe. Units sold in lesser regulated countries will have Tier 4 Interim engines.

The D20x22 S3 features a new hydraulic system design with enhanced ro-tation, thrust and track-ing performance over its predecessor, the D16x20 Series II Navigator HDD. The hydraulics increases the system efficiency, al-lowing better use of engine horsepower and helping to increase the drills pro-ductivity. Rotational speed and thrust speed surpass comparable drills in the market.

The D20x22 S3 has a faster carriage speed, which can lead to an increase in

the amount of product in-stalled per minute. The 167 feet (50.9 m) per minute now exceeds competitive models in the same class. Tracking power and speed has increased as well; im-proving the drills ability to make sharper turns, climb slopes and track up to 3.5 mph (5.6 km/h) to travel to various jobsites in less time than previous models.

Operator comfort re-mained an area of focus, most notably through sound reduction. The noise level output from the drill has been reduced, which not only lessens op-erator fatigue but is also more pleasing to neigh-bourhoods.

The D20x22 S3 has been upgraded to the common control system currently used on larger drills. The system features a digital display and improved on-board diagnostics, which allow operators to cus-tomize the available drill information. The system design uses less wiring and fuses for greater reliability. All S3 Navigator drills will have the new common control configuration, ben-efiting drill operators with the ability to operate a va-

levels, and the Series II model offers flexibility for contractors installing pipe larger than 4 inches (10.2 cm).

The D20x22 S3 marks the next step in the pro-cess of introducing drills

Premier Christy Clark has announced that gov-ernment, in partnership with BC Hydro and For-tisBC, is expanding en-ergy-efficiency programs to help customers, par-ticularly those on low-in-comes, reduce their elec-tricity and gas bills.

Updates to existing low-income programs will nearly double the number of eligible customers and make it easier to apply, and a new program will provide homeowners with up to $6,000 in rebates for energy-efficiency up-grades.

Power Smart is all about helping families save money on their en-ergy bills, said Clark. The funding announced makes energy-efficiency upgrades more accessible and affordable for British Columbians.

To help low income households reduce their energy costs, BC Hydro and FortisBC will offer the Energy Conservation As-

sistance Program (ECAP) and the Energy Saving Kit Program (ESK).

The ECAP provides free energy assessments and energy-saving prod-ucts such as new EN-ERGY STAR refrigerators and insulation upgrades. Customers who receive a fridge could save up to $165 per year in energy costs, and customers who also receive insulation upgrades could save over $300 per year.

The Energy Saving Kits include a number of simple, easy-to-install products such as compact fluorescent light bulbs and weather stripping that can result in savings close to $100 each year.

As a result of regula-tion changes by govern-ment, these programs can now be made available to a greater number of cus-tomers on low incomes. The changes will allow BC Hydro and FortisBC to nearly double the number

Bob Varin, owner of Supply Wagon Rentals, organized the three-day event to show his client base the Pitbull 2300s ability to efficiently and effectively screen topsoil, rock and other quality ma-terials. I had another soil screener that didnt com-pare to the Pitbull, he said. Its very easy to op-erate, the maintenance is simple, and its very easy to transport, he added.

The event gave more than 100 contractors, landscapers and other industry professionals an opportunity to screen materials with the Pitbull 2300. Varin supplied the topsoil for the demonstra-tion.

The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) says Canadas forest companies are well positioned to develop new innovative technologies by taking advantage of the renewed Investments in Forest Industry Innova-tion (IFIT) program.

At a recent news con-ference in Calgary, the Minister of Natural Re-sources, Greg Rickford, invited forest companies to start applying for fund-ing from the $90 mil-lion program for projects aimed at innovative com-mercial-scale technolo-gies. He also announced that West Fraser will be receiving IFIT funds for its pulp operation in Hinton, Alberta to build Canadas first plant to re-cover lignin from its pulp production stream.

The lignin initiative is possible because of years of research work undertaken by FPInnova-tions, among the worlds largest private non-profit

centres working in for-est research. Lignin is a natural substitute for pe-troleum-based chemicals and materials that can be used in various innova-tive applications such as resins, fuels, water and air filtration, rubber ad-ditives, thermoplastics, pharmaceuticals, insu-lating foams and in 3-D printing.

The investment in West Fraser is a terrific example of a successful collaboration that is help-ing companies produce Canadian and world-first innovations, says David Lindsay, the President and CEO of FPAC. These federal IFIT funds are helping Canadian com-panies embrace transfor-mation, diversify their product line and ensure solid jobs in our rural communities to the ben-efit of the entire Canadian economy.

Lindsay says the IFIT program will play an im-portant role in reaching

the Vision2020 transfor-mation agenda for the for-est products industry. The Vision has set ambitious goals including the gener-ation of an additional $20 billion in new products and new markets by the end of the decade. FPAC has just released its first report card on Vision2020 covering the period from 2010 to 2012 entitled Pathways to Prosperity, and can be found at fpac.ca/vision2020.

The Canadian forest products industry is now on a journey of change, says Lindsay. We are aiming high so that the Canadian sector can be a world leader in inno-vation and product de-velopment as well as an important player in the global-bio-economy, all by using our abundant re-newable forest resource.

Lindsay expects the sec-ond phase IFIT program will be as popular as the first $100 million IFIT ini-tiative which generated 107 applications worth $2 billion. This clearly dem-onstrates the desire of Ca-nadian forest companies to embrace transformation and create new high-value products, he says. b

Development & Product Management, Terex AWP EMEAR. Although this product was developed for the European market, it is a new generation of Genie boom lift that of-fers features and capabili-ties suited for customers all over the world.

Featuring a compact 1.9 m (6.3 ft) wheelbase providing a gradeability of 30 percent, the Genie Z-33/18 articulating boom lift offers a working height of 12 m (39.4 ft), a hori-zontal reach of 5.6 m (18.3 ft) and an up-and-over clearance of 4.28 m (14.1 ft). In addition to a 76 cm (2.6 ft) long x 1.16 m (3.1 ft) wide platform, the man basket supports weights of up to 200 kg (440 lbs).

To make transport easier, this compact units boom stows down to only 1.50 m in width (4.11 ft) and 4.17 m (13.5 ft) in length. Drive speed is an efficient 6 km/hr (3.7 mph) combined with a

48V DC 315 Ah boom power source.

Genie is known for de-signing its products with serviceability in mind, and this product is no differ-ent. In addition to easily accessible machine com-ponents, the new Genie Z-33/18 boom lift features mechanical switches that are conveniently protected within the boom to avoid damage. Thanks to the common control system used across the entire Ge-nie boom lift family, tech-nicians will also be able to apply their existing knowl-edge of Genie equipment to help make trouble-shooting and maintenance faster and easier.

Distinguishing the next generation of Genie products from previous models, the new Z-33/18 boom lift also includes the new Genie product design to combine a fresh new look and feel with im-proved ergonomic design features.

This new Genie Z-33/18 articulating boom model will be available across Eu-rope, the Middle East, Rus-sia and Africa (EMEAR) in Q4 2014. Availability for other parts of the world is scheduled for Q1 2015. b

Adding to its suite of online training programs, Genie is proud to introduce Genie Lift Pro Online Tele-handler Operator Training. This training, applicable for all brands of telehandlers, is available now through authorized Genie Lift Pro Training Centres across North America.

This is an extremely important program for our industry, said Scott Owyen, Global Training Manager, Terex Aerial Work Plat-forms. There are no other similar telehandler training programs currently available online, creating a tremen-

dous demand in the market. It is a very time consuming subject for our customers to teach in a classroom setting so our online training pro-gram really fits that need.

The Genie Lift Pro on-line telehandler training is a high-quality, profes-sional-grade program that is delivered through a web-based platform. It is designed to satisfy the gen-eral training requirements for Class 7 Rough Terrain Forklifts (Telehandlers) as defined by the ANSI/ITSDF B56.6 and CSA B335 stan-dards and OSHA 1910.178 regulations. The four-hour

program incorporates cur-rent adult learning theory and consists of graphics, narration, video quizzes and 57-question exam to provide an interactive learning environment for the trainee.

Upon passing the exam, a certificate of completion is presented as proof of training. Then, the online training must be followed by hands-on familiariza-tion from a qualified per-son and employer autho-rization to complete the training process to become a qualified operator.
