The Trinity Church Council meeting was called to order on September 17th by President Melodee Pedersen. Pastor Brandon led the recharge with “EGO,” from the book, Lead Like Jesus, by Ken Blanchard and Phil Hodges, about leading in a way that honors God while also restoring health and effectiveness to organizations and relationships. Council minutes and financial report were approved.

A thank you card was received from the Flaugher Family for the ongoing prayers and financial support provided by Trinity.

An updated policy for large Trinity expenses has been developed and implemented.

Updates were shared with the Council regarding the planning progress for the 5th biannual Raise the Roof (RTR5). Ticket sales will begin the weekend of September 21. The Auction Committee is accepting Live and Silent Auction donations.

The Property Committee has three projects to which attention is being given: altar stairs, concrete leveling and lighting outside the northwest door.

Confirmation will now be a three-year program with structured classes during 7th Grade and 8th Grade and a less formal program during 9th Grade. During 9th Grade, students will learn how to develop their own “rhythm” and explore ways they can serve in the congregation. Due to this revised program, the next service of Confirmation will be held in Spring 2021.

The meeting was adjourned and the Trinity Church Council joined in prayer.

The next Trinity Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 15 at 6 pm.

Fireside Faith Led by Pastor Brandon

Being Lutheran

During Fireside Faith, we’re going to join together to delve into what it means to follow Jesus by “Being Lutheran.” Whether you’re a lifelong Lutheran, if Trinity is the first Lutheran church you’ve ever been a part of or if you have questions about who Jesus is, together we will explore things around this topic. Utilizing the book “Being Lutheran” by A. Trevor Sutton, we’ll unpack how Luther points us to follow Jesus, which guides us to challenge and cherish certain attitudes and mindsets. Join us Sunday mornings at 9:30 starting November 10.

Children’s Christmas Program

Mark your calendars: Sat., Dec. 7, Practice 9 - 10 am

Sunday, Dec. 8, Program during the 10:30 Service.

On November 2 and 3, millions of Christians

worldwide will unite for one cause: to join the global

Body of Christ for the 2019 International Day of

Prayer (IDOP). The number one thing persecuted

Christians ask for is prayer, and we want to equip

you to be able to meet their request.

Order forms will be available in the pews or in the Church office mid November.

From the Pastor : Pastor Ollie Fullmer

Mommy, I am too tired for devotions.

God of The Night Watches

A minister became very proud when he heard that Laura, one of his parishioners living in a care facility, was reading his sermons to her roommate, Grace. Such pride however was short lived when he discovered that Laura read his sermons to Grace in order to help her go to sleep; she had insomnia! Hey now, as a pastor, this is probably not the high water mark of what I’d like to think happens to my sermons! (Ha!) Indeed, maybe I’ve delivered some snoozers; I’ve certainly heard a few over the years.

Vance Havner, a preacher of some years ago was known to say “when it comes to your messages, you want them to linger so that even if they’re long gone, they’re not forgotten. Not the other way around; long forgotten, but not yet gone!”

Reminiscent to the story of Laura and Grace is the biblical story of King Ahasuerus in the book of Esther. He called for the book of Chronicles to be read when he had a sleepless night. Hey, who needs Sominex when you’ve got Chronicles, right? In spite of the humor in some of this, sleeplessness and anxiety can be a serious problem. If we are living the human condition, many of us may know what this is like. Unfortunately, facilities and hospitals which are supposed to be places of rest and healing often turn out to be full of intrusions, interruptions and noise.

In our gospel story of Mark, isn’t it telling that it was not in the midst of boredom that Jesus sleeps soundly. No. It was in the midst of sheer terror where a great squall of a storm arose on the Sea of Galilee. The disciples were afraid while Jesus was fast asleep on a cushion in the stern of the boat. Here is common humanity mingled in one person as the one the Nicene creed calls “God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,” sleeping in a fishing boat!

One of the standard health-care questions is “how have you been sleeping?” (and sometimes where, and how much). A man who was moved to another room in a care facility with no consultation was asked this by a nurse. He answered, tongue in cheek “oh, I sleep like a baby. I awake every couple hours and cry!” Though this has hints of humor in it, many know the razor-sharp edge of truth to this. At times of transition, of depression or of grief, there can be a sense of anxiety and even anger—perhaps an unnamed sense of dread. May God grant that such situations cause us to look to our Lord like the Psalmist and say “from where does my help come from?”

It is Jesus, our living Lord, who dwells inside and is here, ever present. He gives comforting grace in the storm, healing grace in the sickness, forgiving grace when we cannot sleep due to a conflicted or difficult relationship. Here is Jesus, his life, his simple trust and faith who is a support and challenge to our own internal restlessness; a balm to our fears.

I think the child-like inactivity of trust and sleeping speaks as loudly as Jesus’ abrupt command to the wind and waves. When he calmed the wind and waves, the original Greek wording means “to put a muzzle on it.” In other words, Jesus awoke and cried out, in essence, “hey, put a lid on it!”

Jesus is in our boat, riding the storm out with us, asking us “where have we put our faith?” The Psalmist reminds us that the Lord is our keeper, that our help comes from God, and that sleep is a gift from God. It is the “God of the night watches” that causes us to dwell in safety.

The one who is our keeper neither slumbers nor sleeps. It is the personal presence of God that is itself protective. In the darkness of the night, as well as, the light of day and in circumstances beyond our control is the creating, keeping, healing, saving God.

Psalm 4:8

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me to dwell in safety.

Calm in the Storm

Mark 4:35-41
