Give God the Glory A curious feature of the first half of Mark’s Gospel is the pattern of Jesus working a miracle, then telling the recipient of the miracle to keep still about it. Many theories have been offered: Mark is setting the stage for the great “secret” revealed when Peter will proclaim Jesus the Messiah at Caesarea Philippi; more skeptical commentators offer that Jesus, fully aware of human nature, knew that the way to spread the news was to tell people to keep it secret. The insight into this secret-keeping that serves us well, however, is that Jesus was initiating his public ministry according to the pattern that Paul describes. He was doing it for the glory of God—not for his own benefit, but for that of all. Paul would later write in Philippians that Jesus “humbled” himself to become like us. And we see this humility at work in today’s healing of the leper. Jesus is trying to reveal the presence of God’s reign among the people, not so that he himself might receive the glory, but so that God would be glorified through him. Imitating this pattern, which Paul encourages the Jewish and Greek Christian factions in Corinth to do, still serves us well today. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Treasures From Our Tradition Today’s Gospel centers on the plight of a leper and Jesus’ response of healing. In Hawaii, the bacterium that causes leprosy probably entered from China in the mid-1800s, and the native islanders were susceptible to the dreaded disease. In 1866, the government literally dumped the sufferers on a remote and virtually inaccessible island peninsula with towering cliffs. Thrown off ships into the sea, the sick people were told to swim for the beach and head for caves, and for seven years the only supplies were similarly cast into the sea to drift ashore. It was then, 1873, that a thirty-three-year-old Belgian priest, Damien de Veuster, went voluntarily to Kalaupapa. Before long, he cajoled the government into funding his mission and its hospital, built a village with proper homes and sanitation, and recruited Mother Marianne Cope to bring sisters from Syracuse, New York, to nurse the sick. Damien, who eventually died of leprosy, has been canonized, and Mother Marianne as well.
Although leprosy has been curable since the 1940s, today a few patients remain in their lifelong home, now a national historic site. The peninsula is still utterly isolated from the outside world, and the speed limit for the few cars there is 5 mph since there’s nowhere to go! The hospital is still well-staffed and equipped, but access is regulated and visitors must take an official tour, often involving a descent down the cliffs by “Molakai mule.” There are few places on earth that evoke the healing power of Jesus, or our call to follow the Healer, more than Damien’s beloved island mission. Sacraments, Liturgy and Prayer Paul the People Pleaser? Last week we heard St. Paul saying that he was all things to all people. This week, we hear that he tried to please everyone. To modern ears, that sounds more like a people-pleaser. But that wasn’t what Paul meant. The key to Paul’s way of life is the last line of the second reading: “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” (1 Cor 11:1) When Jesus spoke to Paul in his conversion, he asked why he was persecuting Jesus. Paul later began to understand that all Christians make up the body of Christ. As members of that body, we can show others what Jesus is like, by our example. That seems to be a two part process. First, to show Christ, we have to know Christ. We can do that by reading the scriptures and praying with them. We can receive the sacraments regularly, especially Reconciliation, where we experience his forgiveness and love, and the Eucharist, where Jesus unites himself with us, so that we can become more like him. The second part is acting like Jesus. Forgive people who hurt us, care for the sick, the dying, the poor. Don’t be afraid to tell people what God has done for you; encourage others to be grateful for what God has done for them. Paul obviously didn’t please everyone, or he wouldn’t have ended his life in prison. He was more interested in imitating Christ. If we can imitate Paul in that way, we can’t go wrong. Preparing for Lent: Frequently Asked Questions
Q Why do we say that there are forty days of Lent? When you count all the days, it doesn’t add up.
A It might be more accurate to say that there is the "forty day fast within Lent.” Historically, Lent has varied from a week to three
weeks to the present configuration. The forty day fast, however, has been more stable. The Sundays of Lent are certainly part of the Time of Lent, but they are not prescribed days of fast and abstinence.
Q So does that mean that when we give something up for Lent, such as candy, we can have it on Sundays?
A Apart from the prescribed days of fast and abstinence on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, and the days of abstinence every
Friday of Lent, Catholics have traditionally chosen additional penitential practices for the whole Time of Lent. These practices are disciplinary in nature and often more effective if they are continuous, i.e., kept on Sundays as well. That being said, such practices are not regulated by the Church, but by individual conscience.
Q I understand that all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat, but I'm not sure what is classified as meat. Does
meat include chicken and dairy products?
A Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows, sheep or pigs --- all of which live on land. Birds are
also considered meat. Abstinence does not include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, consommé, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or condiments made from animal fat are technically not forbidden. However, moral theologians have traditionally taught that we should abstain from all animal-derived products (except foods such as gelatin, butter, cheese and eggs, which do not have any meat taste). Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.
Q I understand that Catholics ages 18 to 59 should fast on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, but what exactly are the rules
for these fasts?
A Fasting on these days means we can have only one full, meatless meal. Some food can be taken at the other regular meal times if
necessary, but combined they should be less than a full meal. Liquids are allowed at any time, but no solid food should be consumed between meals.
Q Are there exemptions other than for age from the requirement to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday?
A Those that are excused from fast and abstinence outside the age limits include the physically or mentally ill including those suffering
from chronic illnesses such as diabetes. Also excluded are pregnant or nursing women. In all cases, common sense should prevail, and ill persons should not further jeopardize their health by fasting.

Liturgy Screen Operators needed Volunteers are needed to operate the computer for the overhead screen projection during Mass in the Chotin Center. It is easy to do; a brief run-through will have you trained in a flash. All adults and high school students are welcome. High School students can get service hours for their service. The coordinator will help you schedule your Mass time and your rotation for service. If you would like to volunteer, please call Holly Morales at 626-7732.
Rosa Mystica “It is said, the salvation or loss of thousands of souls can depend on the fidelity of a single priest.” All are welcome and encouraged to join us as we meet weekly to participate in a Marian Movement of Priests Prayer Cenacle in which we pray for priests, for their sanctification and constant growth in holiness and virtue, for seminarians, as well as for future vocations to the priesthood. In addition, our group mails out greeting cards to priests serving in the Archdiocese, to express our appreciation and thanks for their dedication and self-sacrificing efforts in serving us through their priesthood, and to seminarians, as a means of encouragement and support. Please join us for prayers on Wednesday mornings in Church after the 9AM Mass. For more information, please contact Cindy Garrett at 985-892-6381 or [email protected].
Tuesday Morning Scriptural Rosary As Pope St. John XXIII has said, “The Rosary is a magnificent and universal prayer for the needs of the Church, the nations and the entire world”. Please join us in Church immediately following the 9AM Mass each Tuesday morning as our group gathers together to pray the scriptural rosary and other intercessory prayers. The scriptural rosary combines the recitation of the rosary with different scripture passages which are read before each Hail Mary. This rosary meditation offers a deeper contemplation of the life of Christ. “Among all the devotions approved by the Church none has been so favored by so many miracles as the devotion of the Most Holy Rosary”, Pope Pius IX. For more information, please contact Cindy Garrett at 892-6381 or [email protected].

Respect Life Ministry Spiritual Adoption Program Week 19: Your baby has the same awake and sleep patterns of a newborn. He has a favorite position for sleep and recognizable active and rest periods this week. Throughout baby’s body, nerves are being coated with a fatty substance called myelin, which insulates the nerves so that impulses can flow smoothly. The milk teeth buds have already developed and over the next few days the buds for the permanent teeth will begin to form behind the milk teeth. If your baby is female the uterus starts to develop. If it’s a boy, the genitals are distinct and recognizable. Your baby is swallowing amniotic fluid and his kidneys are making urine. Your little one’s size is around 6.02 inches and 8.47 ounces.
“The Church affirms the inviolable dignity of every person, regardless of the duration or extent of the person's incapacity or dependency. Nothing diminishes the unchangeable dignity and sanctity of a person's life, or the obligation to protect and care for it.” ~USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities “Catholic Considerations for Our Earthly Passing”
Slidell Pro-Life Walk: On Sunday, February 18th, come join the Pro-Life Walk in Slidell from the Slidell Pregnancy Help Center at 550 Gause Blvd. to the St. Margaret Mary Church and back. All praise and glory is yours, Lord our God, for you have called us to serve you in love. Bless N., so that he/she may bear this illness in union with your Son's obedient suffering. Restore him/her to health, and lead him/her to glory. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
Men’s Spirituality
Holy Mass descends on us from God. How can we prepare for this? One of the most available ways is to be familiar with the readings that we can find in many places. The OLL Men’s Spirituality Group meets weekly to read, meditate, discuss, and pray on the Bible and its lessons for us. Come join us and deepen your faith every Thursday at 7 PM in Classroom 201, across the street from the Chotin Center. Please contact Tony Garner at (985) 705-2607 or [email protected] for further details.
Marriage Preparation The next opportunity for potential marriage preparation mentor couples to be trained in the In Home Marriage Preparation program written by Jan and Lloyd Tate will be Saturday, March 24th, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Orleans from 8:30 AM - 5 PM. Presenters are the Tates, and the cost is $125 per couple. Couples interested in becoming a mentor couple for Our Lady of the Lake should contact Beth in the PLC at 985-626-5671 x116 to find out how to register.
Called By Name One of the ways the Vocation Ministry at Our Lady of the Lake is asking for support from our parishioners is by prayerfully considering young men and women who may be called to the Priesthood or Religious Life. Perhaps the Lord Jesus is calling him/her to consider a life of service in the Church as a Priest, Sister, Brother or Deacon. Parishioners can put forth names of potential individuals by filling out a “Called by Name” card, which are available in the Church office. These cards have been provided by the Vocation Office in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Fill out the back and place it in the collection basket or give it to the church office. Your name is optional. You may also email Dwight and Mary Johnston at [email protected] and give the name, phone number and email of the person you see as a good candidate.
OLL Altar Society Meeting: The February meeting of the Altar Society will take place after the 9 AM Mass on Wednesday, February 14th in Fellowship 1 with lunch following at Mandina’s. If you plan to attend, please call Joy Werner at 727-0027 by Monday, February 12th.

Administration and Operations
Registration/Stewardship FAQ How do I register? Online registration is available at our website under “Contact Us” or you can register in person in our Parish Life Center.
What information do I need to update when it changes? Those already registered should update your personal information if any of the following change: address, contact numbers, email addresses, marital status, deaths, additions to family/household.
When should my grown child be taken off of my record? Adult children who have moved or married are encouraged to register at OLL or in their parish of residence.
Can I be registered in more than one parish? No, you can only be registered with one parish who will be sacramentally responsible for you and your family.
How do I receive envelopes? When you register, you will begin receiving envelopes when our next quarter report goes out to the company. If you sign up for online giving, we remove you from envelope distribution. If you do not wish to receive envelopes, please call the office at 985-626-5671 or email [email protected] and request to be removed from the distribution list. Why should I give to the Church? Only with the sacrificial offering of all our members, can we ensure that Our Lady of the Lake remains a vibrant, active faith community. With your offering you can ensure that we are able to meet our financial obligations to maintain our ministries, programs and facilities, pay a just wage to our parish staff, support the needs of the larger Church and assist our brothers and sisters in need. Are contributions tax deductible? Yes. We will have information on requesting your tax statement in upcoming bulletins. If you participate in online giving, you can print your statement through your online giving account at your convenience.
