MONDAY, JUNE 5, 2017 CONFERENCE CHECK-IN & INFORMATION / 7:00AM-5:00PM CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST PROVIDED / 7:00-8:00AM PLENARY SESSION / 8:00-9:30 AM No Child is a Prostitute: Reframing the Commercial Exploitation of Children as Child Sexual Abuse - Politically and Legally Malika Saada Saar, Senior Counsel on Civil & Human Rights, Google There is an urgent need to reframe "child prostitution" as child sexual abuse, in the cultural and legal contexts. Why have we established a cultural and legal distinction between raping a child and paying to rape a child? What are the gender and racial implications of continuing to criminalize disproportionately Black and Brown girls for prostitution and granting impunity for those who hurt them? Similar to how domestic violence reframed a "private matter" as an act of violence, we in the child rights community must do the same and name child exploitation as child abuse. CONCURRENT SESSION I / 9:45-11:15 AM Session 1A: Attorneys General Guidance: A discussion of the the new AG guidance to address demand and disrupt the existing legal culture of impunity for buyers. Malika Saada Saar, Senior Counsel on Civil & Human Rights, Google This workshop will share the legal research revealed by the AG Guidance, explore the recommendations for prosecutors on effective strategies to convict buyers in context of child sexual abuse; and discuss the ongoing challenges to impunity for perpetrators.
