It is that time of the year again where the leadership changes and we get an opportunity to bring in new faces and ideas to our Sun Coast Branch of ASCE. Please be sure to cast your votes and/or write in a qualified member (that excludes Santa Clause and Mickey Mouse). The current list of candidates is as follows: Sonya Fronckowiak, P.E. – President Amjid Hussain, P. E. – Vice President Chris Stratton, E. I. – Secretary Samantha Smith, E.I. – Treasurer On behalf of your current branch leadership, we would like to thank you for all the support. We had a really great year of different events that could not have been done without you. Our Annual Charity Golf Tournament was a huge success where we were able to fund various programs and we were able to support two students with scholarships. The Toothpick Bridge Committee brought the competition to a whole new level with a record number of participants, while the the West Point Bridge Committee has built momentum gaining more support and participation. Life is about supporting different causes like the ones mentioned above, but it is also about having fun! The winter social aboard the LeBarge was another great event where people had the chance to relax, listen to some really great music, and of course, indulge in some treats and beverages!

It is going to be hard to top our events from last year, but this year, as your Branch President, I hope to continue our “normal” events, and add a few things to our “To Do” list. Something I would really like to pursue is an “ASCE Gives Back” event that will allow us to give back to the ones in need (i.e. Habitat for Humanity, Soup Kitchen, Food Drives, etc.). I would also like to grow the Charity Golf Tournament so we can support more programs and possibly more deserving students with scholarships. We want to hear what is important to you, so in the next couple of weeks, we will send out a survey where you can give us your feedback. It is really important for you to participate in the survey….in fact it is so important, that those who participate will be entered in a drawing for a chance to win a $100 gift certificate to a place of your choice! We want to thank you again for all your support and we hope to see you at our next meeting on October 21, 2010 featuring Paul Blackketter from Benderson Development as our speaker. 2010 ASCE SunCoast Branch Election!
It’s almost that time of the year again! The term of the ASCE SunCoast Branch officers is expiring in October 2010. SunCoast members are encouraged to vote for the nominees or write in any qualified member for any of the following positions by October 19, 2010. The ballot is already issued to all members. Man-Chung Tang, Ph.D., P.E., Dist.M.ASCE, NAE, is the chairman of the board of T.Y. Lin International, a transportation planning and engineering firm based in San Francisco. He has over 44 years of design and construction experience, including more than 100 major bridges worldwide. In 1995, Tang was elected to the National Academy of Engineering, and in 2000 he was elected as a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has received many awards including the ASCE’s Roeblings award for construction, ASBI’s Leadership award. Tang also received ASCE's 2010 Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Award for lifetime achievement in design. Tang has master’s and doctoral degrees in civil engineering from Technical University in Darmstadt, Germany and a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Chu Hai College in Hong Kong. He is a registered professional engineer in 15 states and a qualified chartered structural engineer in the United Kingdom. He resides in San Francisco, Calif.
National News
Veronica Cedillos, 26, is a project manager for GeoHazards International in Palo Alto. Cedillos managed a team that evaluated the need for, and feasibility of, developing tsunami evacuation infrastructure, in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia, a region with one of the highest tsunami risks in the world. She also educated communities about the importance of evacuating quickly and the high risk of a tsunami occurring in the area. Cedillos was selected to represent ASCE in the Engineers Week 2010 New Faces of Engineering program.
John Barry, 28, a project engineer with Thornton Tomasetti in New York City, was responsible for the design of three structures for the $8.5 billion MGM City Center in Las Vegas, including a 45,000 square foot hung glass curtain wall. Barry is also an ACE mentor, advising students on engineering and architecture careers
