Our Team To all Clients, Readers, and Friends,Happy New Year and a BIG thank you to all of our clients and readers

for a great start to 2015! West central Florida is the place to be during this time of the year with its mild temperatures and beautiful sunsets. There’s

so much to enjoy and be part of in this great community of ours with its many outdoor events and opportunities. Don’t forget to take advantage of what is

available to you –from volunteering your services and time, to being a participant in events, activities, etc. that can change your life and others. You can make a

difference, no matter what your age, if you allow yourself time. Beginning with this new quarter we are pleased to announce our expansion to

the Sarasota area. So many have asked and we have listened. We are very excited to broaden our listings and give you, our readers, more information to help keep your family busy, active and connected. Please be particularly attentive to the once in a lifetime events, offered only to our area.

One of the highlights of last quarter’s events was our participation in the Jingle Ball Run. This event provided an opportunity for us to get our highly informative Sports and Activities Directory into your hands, allowing us to hear directly from you, our readers, while all along helping to support a great cause. Your wonderful responses were greatly appreciated.

For this new quarter we are looking forward to helping some other organizations get the word out there! For example, the JDRF ONE WALK will be held on Saturday, April 18. The proceeds from this event will go to helping fi nd a cure for Juvenile Diabetes, a disease that affects so many of our youth. More details and information can be found on page 40. If you are looking for a way to volunteer, please look into the MARK WANDALL FOUNDATION. The article on page 51 gives the information needed to help enrich a child’s life. This organization provides support and assistance to grieving children who have lost a loved one or guardian. They will be hosting a FREE one day camp in October and are in need of volunteers to help with these little ones who have experienced the loss of a parent, sibling or guardian. Please come out and support these great organizations or any others listed for your convenience. Whether it is supporting them fi nancially or giving of your own time, all is needed and appreciated. It is always nice to help and give back and the benefi ts are priceless. Participation in any of these events could be part of your new year’s resolutions or bucket lists.

For those parents with school children, it is hard to believe that spring break is rapidly approaching. Check out the many local camps and activities that are available in our area. If you will be traveling, enjoy and safe travels.

On behalf of the team at Sports and Activities Directory we wish each of you a happy and safe spring break and remember we love to see your children’s activities. If you have pictures or events that you would like to see in our upcoming issues please send them our way.

Blessings to you,

Corrie

When coming to Sarasota and Manatee County

Chambers, the common ground is COMMUNITY; which involves

partnerships and businesses that help to strengthen and grow

communities in the area.

Sarasota Chamber’s mission is to create the best business climate in

the United States! Their vision isn’t about having more, it’s about having

better. They want to have a balance between the quality of living and

the quality of working by offering different options for businesses to help

assist in creating that work/life balance. Sarasota Chamber offers many

options. For example, the Sarasota Tomorrow is a collaborative effort to try

and revitalize the greater Sarasota area in its economy, the protection of its

unique and delicate environment, while enhancing the atmosphere for all its

residents. It is remarkable how Greater Sarasota has been able to contain

the economic ups and downs of the new century. The present concern is to

examine the slowing economy and its effects that can threaten the quality of

life both locally and nationally. Sarasota Tomorrow is here to help protect

that in the COMMUNITY.

Manatee Chamber’s motto is Strengthening your business and Our

COMMUNITY. Their desire is to bring a fresh and new outlook to the area

with their focus on helping in the community, showing businesses how

they can benefit by helping others. One area is the Business Partners

in Education Program. This program provides businesses with the

opportunity to get involved with their local schools and therefore,

making a difference in the schools and within their COMMUNITY.

Providing a partnership helps both businesses and schools

accomplish goals that could help to enhance each other.

Both Sarasota and Manatee Chambers are here

to provide access to the COMMUNITY by helping

to s t rengthen our businesses, enhance our

schools and protect our environment. Let’s

partner together to create and increase our

COMMUNITY involvement.

There’s just something about taking flight. The sensation of soaring through the air, twisting, turning and tilting – even slam-dunking – with gravity-defying glee is an elusive experience many have sought since childhood. Likewise, for those who are fitness-minded, locating a venue that offers both the necessary equipment and space for low-impact, cardiovascular-boosting aerobic exercise can be exhausting in itself. Now, people in Sarasota can find it all – and more – here at Sky Zone Trampoline Park.

Get Ready To Fly: Sky Zone is the world’s first indoor trampoline park and the inventor of “fun fitness.” With locations open across the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia, the Sky Zone franchise has earned accolades as the number-one “out of the box”workout and the “best party ever.” The company has also been ranked 180 on the 2013 500/5000 List by Inc., “Best Gym Alternative” by Vegas SEVEN magazine, “2012 Locals’ Choice for Kid’s Birthday Party” by Southbay magazine and one of the 2013 “Fresh Concepts Livening Up Franchising” by Entrepreneur magazine. We opened Sky Zone Sarasota on January 1, 2015, to welcome people of all ages, sizes and physical abilities to experience new heights with healthy, high-flying activities. We also serve as an ideal local venue for groups seeking unique events, such as birthday parties, corporate team building excursions, field trips and more. Spend some time with us, and you’ll discover wall-to-wall fun with the exciting, exhilarating feeling of jumping, bouncing and flying!

Take A Healthy Bounce: Sky Zone is about the freedom of jumping, which actually helps get your body in better shape. In fact, you can burn up to 1,000 calories an hour just by jumping with us! Jumping also helps improve circulation and cardiovascular health, balance and coordination, and mental health through accomplishment and endorphin stimulation. “Trampoline exercise is also good for your immune system,” says Dr. Morton Walker, in a published list of trampoline health benefits. “This helps keep your body’s natural defenses high and reduces the chance of getting sick.” Healthy and happy go together, and Sky Zone is here to keep you active, athletic and fit.

Other Health Benefits of Bouncing at Sky Zone:Lowers elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Tones up your glandular

system, especially your thyroid glands. Increases activity of your red bone marrow in producing red blood cells. Improves your digestion. Promotes better sleep.

High-Flying Activities And Programs: At Sky Zone, we are proud to be a fun physical activity for everyone. Our all-trampoline walled courts are designed to provide a wide array of low-impact activities for all ages and bouncing 3-D play adventures. These include:• Open Jump – All ages are welcome to fly high with full access to all Sky Zone

activities, including the Main Court (free jump), the Foam Zone (freestyle jumping into foam), Ultimate Dodgeball, SkySlam, and more!

• Ultimate Dodgeball - Combine regular dodgeball with Sky Zone’s patented wall-to-wall trampolines and get the world’s most awesome sport: Ultimate Dodgeball.

• Foam Zone - Jump, fly and flip from a trampoline runway into a pit filled with 10,000 foam cubes. There’s no better way to experience the pure joy of weightlessness.

• Sky Slam – Slam-dunk like a pro with trampoline launch pads that bounce you ten feet into the air.

• SkyRobics - A low-impact, healthy activity that combines advanced calisthenics with a three-dimensional cardio and strength-training programs. We also offer personal training, 10-class packs and monthly unlimited packages. No membership contracts are required.

Walk-ins are welcome anytime, but we do have a capacity limit. Pre-purchased tickets for individuals and smaller groups are recommended to guarantee your jump time. Visit us at www.SkyZone.com/Sarasota to purchase your tickets or get more information on all the exciting activities and programs we have to offer. Come visit at 6180 Edgelake Dr, Sarasota.

As discussed in the previous article, all activities involving young players ages 8 to 12 should have, as main objectives, the teaching of all individual abilities that represent the fundamental base of the game of soccer.

Small-sided games have been part of soccer since the beginning. Some of the best players in the world have played small-sided games in the streets. In the past, it was not uncommon for these games to be played in the streets and in any open areas with uneven numbers and various ages. However, today is not as easy as it used to be, streets are dangerous, or open space is becoming very hard to find and therefore it has become the responsibility of the coach to recreate the small-sided game environment.

In general, small-sided games help players improve their abilities. Modifying the small-sided game format can also help coaches reach precise objectives. I would like to propose some simple exercises of which the space parameters will vary based on different situations of play to coach.

A simple 4 vs. 4 possession game can have different variations and different results based on the dimensions: A larger area will favor the attacking team. Having the larger area will allow players to utilize more space, create more opportunity and unbalance the team without the ball. A smaller area will favor the defending team or the team without the ball. It will also increase the concentration of the players and team around the ball. The smaller area will force players to be more attentive as there is no window for mistakes.

By modifying the field dimension the players learn to evaluate different distances such as distance between teammates, opponents, ball and the inside perimeters of the field. This can

also help develop the ability to occupy or free certain areas of the field to allow situations of play, such as tight area for the defensive phase or open area for the offensive phase.

By also creating fields with different geometrical shapes, such as squares, rectangular, circular or even triangular, this will encourage and force the players to improve and understand three major things: space – shape – orientation.

A more complex 4 vs. 4 possession game can be played, for example, in a more vertical field. Some of the requirements can be: • Possession of the ball switching with a

long pass • One short pass and then go for a long pass • One pass outside “wide” and then look for

a pass to the center of the field. These games will allow ball movement,

alternating between short passes for ball possession to long pass for switching play. The field can be divided into horizontal sections. Some of the requirements may be possession of the ball with the objective to accomplish:• Long pass directly from the defensive

phase to the offensive phase• Long pass followed by a short pass

switching with a midfielder combination• Progression from the defensive phase

to the offensive phase using the center (midfielder) zone

These games allow movement to use depth and alternating short passes for ball possession to long passes to find depth.

So, at the end - is it Just a Game? The emotional responses are one of the key components to any team success and failure, no matter what the age is. Parents should not allow their emotions to interfere with what coaches are trying to accomplish.

SWIMKIDS TEACHES SURVIVAL SKILLSWarm weather is right around the corner, and if you

have children, chances are you’re considering swimming lessons to teach them how to swim and be safe in the water. Well look no further, it’s right here at Sarasota HealthFit. Whether it is Weekdays or Weekends, SwimKids USA has a class that is convenient for you and your families schedule. How is SwimKids USA Swim School different than other city programs? “Because at SwimKids USA you get results!”, says Alena Spencer. As owner and teacher of SwimKids USA, Alena is involved in every aspect of the program.

For over 23 years, thousands of children have graduated from the school. Best of all, they are not only having fun, but are safe and skilled in the water. “Safety is our number one priority here at SwimKids USA”, says Alena. And rightfully so when you consider this fact: In the state of Florida, the leading cause of death for children under the age of 5 is drowning.

And with that fact, it’s no wonder why parents choose SwimKids USA. One only has to view the movie clips on the SwimKids USA website and Facebook Page to see the end results.

“What makes our program different is that we are results focused, not lesson focused. Many other programs you pay for “lessons”, with SwimKids USA you pay for “results”. With that focus also comes the personal attention we give to every child AND every parent.” says Alena. “Even though I am the owner, I still take every phone call and answer every question when talking to parents about their child’s progress in the program. From the moment the phone rings to teaching the child, I do not outsource any aspect of the program.”

Whether it is Infant classes or Stroke Technique classes for your aspiring competitive swimmer, there is a SwimKids USA class designed just for you.

So, do you have a child or grandchild that needs to learn to swim? Sign up today! But don’t delay, classes will fi ll up fast!

For more information or to schedule a class, simply call Alena directly at (941) 275-9957.

The Manatee Outlaws 12U baseball team

won the fi rst ever STB Border Wars Championship

over PBA Black this past weekend at Braden River

(11/16-17). The tournament was comprised of

more than 20 teams from Fort Myers to North

Tampa . The Outlaws played outstanding the entire

weekend going undefeated (5-0). The success was

the result of a complete team effort in all areas of

the game. Outstanding pitching was provided by

Brady Jernigan, Manny Reyes, Dylan Nealey, Cody

Shellinger, Mason Janz, Trace Goforth and Mason

Page. Offense was abundant with 8 Homeruns:

Reyes (2),Shellinger, Janz, Conner Lowery, Goforth,

Nealey, Brett Plimley (Grand Slam). Defensive

standouts included Maven Gordon and Zach

Fenimore. The Championship came down to the

fi nal at bats for the Outlaws. The game had multiple

lead changes throughout and PBA Black went into

the last inning with a 10-8 advantage. A walk to

start the inning and a double ripped down the line

by Connor O’sullivan gave the Outlaws the tying run

in scoring position. 2 batters later and with a 0-1

count, Reyes hit a towering walk-off 3 run homer to

seal the 11-10 championship win. All 12 players

contributed in this great team victory.

The boys will be hosting a coed Kickball

Tournament February 28 in Palmetto to help

raise money so they can represent the area in a

week long nationwide event in Myrtle Beach S.C.

this summer. With every fundraiser they do the

boys make sure to donate a portion of proceeds

to a well deserving children’s charity. Recently

we’ve partnered up with the Ronald McDonald

House and JDRF (juvenile diabetes) They know

how fortunate they are to enjoy this game and

are very aware that not all children their age are

able to do so. This is our way to give back and

help those children get on track a little sooner to

hopefully one day be able to experience all the

fun that we do.

Like our Manatee Outlaws FB page or contact

us at [email protected] for

more information on how you can help send us to

Myrtle Beach. Remember you’re helping the team

and our charities.

“What’s on the agenda for the weekend?” Bob asked his wife one Friday morning before they each headed off to work. “Well, we have Dylan’s soccer practice at 8am Saturday, then lunch with the Martins, and Saturday evening we’re going to catch the parade. Sunday, after church, we girls are going to the beach while you catch up with Steve for golf. My parents are coming for dinner, so make sure you’re home by six.” Another way to answer his question would have been, “A lot!”

Typical families have pretty busy weekends, and that’s not a bad thing either. Lakewood Ranch and the entire region bring thousands of people in for such things and we locals get first dibs on the wonderful weather and events. This family’s weekend plans even involved a healthy balance of sports, leisure, family time, and spiritual fulfillment; however, they neglected to put any time into their own relationship as a couple.

When couples aren’t satisfied, they call me for marriage counseling or coaching, and without fail, the common reason is because they aren’t spending enough time together building up their own relationship. By day, busy moms and dads are basically saving the world by doing all sorts of cartwheels and heroic deeds for their families, but by night, there is little time left for their own refueling as a couple. Furthermore, at the end of the day, when nerves are worn thin, spouses are often the first to get an earful of frustration, displaced anger, and exhausted overload from one another. And who can blame them with the average family schedule?

Therefore, in order to have a more fulfilling and satisfying life together, they are the only ones who can and should bring change. If and when couples relate well together, the sky is the limit on what they can achieve individually, together, and as a family. This month, in honor of love, why not add to the number of hours you actively put into your relationship currently, by setting a goal to spend at least ten hours a week in building up your relationship? Out of approximately 115 waking hours, 10 hours are only a small fractional part and should be protected, maintained, and spent together having “stress-free” relationship time. These times should have four basic rules.

SIMPLE RULES FOR TIME TOGETHER1. Couples should be physically touching or looking at each other (or

both, even better) during most of this time.2. Couples should be alone, at least a fair amount of the time (If you

are home and have kids, understand but try to minimize interruptions, etc). 3. Couples should not discuss problems during this time. Problems can

be talked about at other times of course, but during this special “stress-free” relationship time, problems should not intentionally be discussed, although if something comes up on an occasional time, don’t keep score. Just make sure it stays basically free of problems so you can protect that time.

4. Couples should ideally find something to do together that they both enjoy to some degree.

Now, spend a few moments building a list together of fun things you like to do during your connection time. Make sure to include physical time together, emotional time together, and if both are willing, spiritual time together.

After talking about the things you will try doing together, discuss when you will likely try doing them. Many couples will start a sitter swap with other couples with children so they can afford free babysitting, or hire a local teen from the Y to do a two, three or four-hour date night while the couple brings a game or picnic dinner along. It could be as simple as subs, a bag of chips and a pack of cards, just as long as you set aside the time together and avoid talking about problems.

Once you get through this simple planning and start spending time together in this problem-free zone, this relationship time will probably be the most satisfying part of your week. Finally, it’s time to focus on when it will happen! Use your own schedule to build your unique relationship time.

LOVE NOTE FROM CHRISTA: If your spouse or partner does not want to spend time planning to love you well, don’t withhold your love and commitment to your family. Love them well anyway, because love lends to both you and them, versus resentment that eats away at everyone. If and when you are loved back by that person, you can thrive even more, but you can still thrive by loving others well and making sure to get self-care in other ways.

Spring will be here before we know it and spring activities and sports will be in full force. April is National

Facial Protection Month and a time when members of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, and the Academy for Sports Dentistry work together to remind parents to make sure their young athletes play it safe and wear a mouth guard and other appropriate safety gear during organized and recreational sporting activities. Organized sports include, but are not limited to, football, wrestling, basketball, baseball, volleyball, hockey, softball, and soccer. Recreational sports include cycling, in-line skating, skateboarding or any activity in which the face could come in contact with a hard object, another person or the pavement. A child’s mouth and face can be easily injured if the proper precautions are not used while playing sports.

Did You Know?- According to the Center for Disease Control, more than half of the 7 million

sports and recreation related injuries that occur each year are sustained by youth as young as 5 years old.

- Last year, the National Youth Sports Safety Foundation forecasted that more than 3 million teeth would be knocked out in youth sporting events.

- Athletes who do not wear mouth guards are 60 times more likely to sustain damage to their teeth

- In a survey commissioned by the American Association of Orthodontists, 67% of parents admit that their child does not wear a mouth guard during organized sports.

This raises a question: if mouth guards offer a simple and relatively inexpensive solution to help dramatically decrease the risk of injuries, why aren’t more kids wearing them? Parents are encouraged to talk with their dental and orthodontic professionals about the right mouth guards for their young athletes, and to urge coaches to require that young athletes wear their mouth guards at every practice and every game. In addition, face guards or devices made of plastic or metal that attach to baseball helmets, also help to prevent facial injuries. Because orthodontists help kids and adults obtain healthy, beautiful smiles, the last thing we want to see is a patient get injured because they were not properly equipped. If an accident does occur, causing a facial injury, you should go to the emergency room. If there is any dental damage done, contact your child’s dentist right away so that arrangements can be made to correct the problem. If your child is in braces, damage can lengthen treatment time and impact results, so contact your orthodontist for advice if damage occurs.

To prevent facial injuries remember these four important tips:• Wear mouth guards for contact sports to help prevent injuries to the teeth

and mouth.• Wear a helmet. Helmets absorb the energy of an impact.• Wear protective eyewear. Eyes are extremely vulnerable.• Be alert even as a spectator. Alert spectators can avoid foul baseballs and

flying hockey pucks. Watch your step when climbing bleachers.

From Dr. Matthew Baker and the staff at Baker Orthodontics, we hope you have a wonderful spring and play safe! If you have any questions about how to protect your child’s mouth, give our office a call at 941-355-3808.

Hi! My name is Emmabella Rudd. On Saturday, April 18, I will be walking with thousands to support those living with Type 1 Diabetes in Lakewood Ranch for the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) One Walk!

I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when I was 5 years old. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease that strikes suddenly and leaves the individual insulin dependent for life, it is unrelated to diet or lifestyle. The disease occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, a hormone essential to turning food into energy. Without insulin, glucose from food stays in the blood, where it can cause serious damage to all of the body’s organs. To stay alive, synthetic insulin must be injected into the bloodstream multiple times a day or via insulin pump.

Insulin keeps me alive, but is not a cure. Stress, illness, and hormones often raise my blood sugars to dangerously high levels that cause damage to my organs. I have to carefully administer insulin by counting every carbohydrate I consume, if I over calculate the amount of carbs in my meal, my blood sugar goes dangerously low. It is a fine balance to keep my blood sugar in range. I am very active and play competitive soccer, this also causes me to go low very rapidly. When I am low, I feel very sick, shaky, clammy, my vision starts to blur, and I can’t think straight. It is very scary, and can cause me to lose consciousness.

I have been living with this disease for eight years now. I prick my fingers 10-12 times a day, even through the night. I wear an insulin pump that delivers insulin into my body through a cannula under my skin. I change the pump site every three days. I also wear a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), it closely monitors my blood glucose levels with a sensor placed under my skin, which I change every seven days. The CGM sounds an alarm to warn me if I am going dangerously high or low.

My family and I decided when I was first diagnosed that we weren’t going to let this disease define me, we were going to do everything in our power to find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. We formed a team, Emmabella’s Believers, dedicated to raising funds for JDRF and bringing awareness for the disease. Emmabella’s Believers has raised $130,000 in the last eight years.

JDRF is the number 1 leading global organization funding Type 1 Diabetes. Their goal is to permanently remove Type 1 Diabetes from any one currently living with this devastating disease, and the people that will be effected by it in the near future. JDRF sponsors scientific research studies in 17 different countries on a plan to treat, prevent, and cure Type 1 Diabetes.

On Saturday, April 18th at Lakewood Ranch Main Street, over 2,500 people are expected to join in at the JDRF One Walk. This annual event brings local businesses, families, schools, and many more organizations together to participate in this fundraiser. This 3 mile walk will include entertainment, face-painting, and food all supporting Type 1 Diabetes! Registration for the JDRF One Walk begins at 8 A.M on Main Street, or you can register online at www.walk.jdrf.org

JDRF has made a difference in so many advancements in my life, but that is not a cure! We need your help to make everyone living with Type 1 Diabetes dream, a reality! Go put on your walking shoes and join us for a fun filled event to support a great cause!

Please visit www.floridasuncoast.jdrf.org for more information on JDRF and how to get involved, and www.emmabellasbelievers.org to join my team! Hope to see you there!

Play… fun… learning…are they really connected? Of course they are!

As a teacher of over ten years I felt myself getting restless, uneasy and yes, confused. Things have changed in the last several years. Expectations for both the students and teachers are different. It seems as though we are fast forwarding learning. Kindergarten is the new first grade, first grade is the new second grade, etc. This year, as I experience teaching preschool, I am even seeing this concept as a new kindergartener! We are forced to teach academics in a way that is causing us to lose sight of the whole child.

Developmentally, each child is different and unique. However, one thing is the same, these children all need a solid foundation before those academics are ingrained in their little brains. A piece of the puzzle is missing. With the rush of teaching our little ones how to read and write we are missing readiness skills.

Readiness skills are those skills that must be acquired and strengthened to help children become strong readers and writers. They include visual tracking, cutting, drawing, the ability to hear and create different sounds, and the ability to use large and small muscles.

Readiness skills begin developing as early as birth. The years between birth and five years should be filled with readiness activities. Readiness learning is fun, fun is play, play is learning! At this time, the state is expecting even our youngest children to read, write, do arithmetic and even take computerized tests. Of course it is important to learn these, skills but it is equally important to have the foundation to blossom in these areas.

Not only is it necessary to teach readiness skills in the classroom, but this learning must take place outside of school as well. When I was very young, my brother told me that learning takes place every second of the day. I didn’t really understand

what that meant, but now as I reflect back to his original thought, its meaning becomes very clear.

Left alone we listen to sounds and observe our surroundings. It is our duty as parents, educators, and adults to take these teachable moments and create an atmosphere of rich learning. Read to your baby, everyday! It awakens their listening skills, gets them to hear sounds, and helps them to love literature. Talk to your baby, all the time! It teaches them love, gives them comfort, awakens their listening skills, and gets them to understand how to produce sounds. Play peek-a-boo with your baby! It teaches them to interact with others.

As your children grow and start grasping for items and moving, help them to explore. Grasping for toys is the start of developing their grasp of a pencil for writing. Scribbling with crayons is the beginning of writing a story. Cutting paper helps to strengthen those muscles used to write. We need to do this more in our classrooms but you mustn’t forget that we are all partners in our little ones’ growth and chance to thrive!

As written by David Elkind, author and professor emeritus of Child Development at Tuffs University in Medford, Massachusetts, “Although it is counter intuitive, the more children learn from their own play when they are young, the better prepared they are to learn from academic instruction when they are older.”

Before we can expect our children to write stories, do math and read books, they must have the opportunities to “get ready”. Play with your children, talk to your children, explore with your children. Don’t ever give this up, not even as they get older and seem to not need it. Even as adults we must continue to play, because after all, play is fun and we learn even more when we have fun! We learn all the time, every second of the day.

Jean Fox has been a teacher in Manatee County for over ten years. She is having fun writing books, teaching preschool, tutoring and selling toys. She wrote and published the book “What is Hanukkah?” which can be found at www.amazon.com/dp/1503239551 and is an educational consultant for Discovery Toys. Discovery Toys is a company that is over 34 years old and sells high quality educational toys, books, games and CD’s. She can be reached at [email protected] or 941-780-2481.

The New Year is off to a changing and exciting start for Kinnan. At the end of the year we said good bye to Ms. Taylor, our assistant principal. After many years of service and dedication she has decided to retire. We have enjoyed having her here and we will miss her greatly. On her last day the students wore her favorite color, orange, to show their support and encouragement. Each grade surprised Ms. Taylor with a gift of something that reminds them of her. She has been such a great inspiration to the students and staff here at Kinnan.

Our Fall Festival was held on November 1 and everyone had a great time and enjoyed the fun new activities that we had this year. New this year was the fun house, Bobby the balloon man, and a photo booth. Everyone seemed to enjoy these added activities while also enjoying the ever popular carnival games. Thank you to all who came out to support

Kinnan and help earn their teachers some much needed money for their classrooms.

Movie Nights and more restaurant nights will be added in the up and coming weeks so please make sure to check your children’s backpacks for these dates. The Chick-Fil-A night was such a huge success and we will be doing more in the months to come. Remember, these nights help raise money for our school and what a fun night to have with family and friends. Also remember our next SAC meeting will be March 17 @ 6pm. We would love to see you there.

Lastly, we would like to welcome Tori Hicks to the Kinnan Family. She will be our new Assistant principal and we are excited to have her on board with us. Make sure to say hello and introduce yourself to her.

Wishing each of you a Happy New Year from Kinnan.

awareness for leukemia. Williams Elementary has had amazing success in the past. In 2013, we raised $2,394 and in 2014, we raised $4,652 which placed our school in 3rd place for the Suncoast area. This year, we are hoping to do even better! Students will bring home a collection box on January 30th and have until February 6th to fill them up with change. The class that raises the most money will be treated to lunch catered by The Olive Garden! So break out the piggy banks and start saving! The Mark Wandall Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization located in the Sarasota/Bradenton area whose mission is to move children through grief by providing support and assistance to children who have lost an immediate family member or guardian. The death of an immediate family member happens far too often to children in our community. Children need an avenue to deal with the grief associated with this loss. The foundation has three areas of focus allowing them to carry out their mission: a partnership with Comfort Zone Camps, a partnership with Children First of Sarasota and a college scholarship program.

The Mark Wandall Foundation has partnered with Comfort Zone Camps (also a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization) to bring a 1-day camp to the Sarasota/Bradenton area on October 24, 2015. Future camps are being planned for 2016 and 2017. This free 1-day camp is offered to children ages 7 to 17 and includes confidence building programs and age-based support groups that break the emotional isolation grief often brings. Comfort Zone envisions a world where grieving children are not forgotten or left to grieve alone, but are supported by a wide community that understands them. For more information on Comfort Zone Camps, visit http://comfortzonecamp.org.

Volunteers are the life-blood of Comfort Zone Camp. Camps could not happen without a large community of

volunteers. Volunteers are required to attend a training session prior to volunteering to gain a better understanding of childhood bereavement and volunteer expectations. The training for volunteers for the 2015 camp will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2015. If you are interested in being a part of this amazing experience, contact [email protected].

Making a bereavement camp for children a reality in the Sarasota/Bradenton area has been a priority of The Mark Wandall Foundation for several years. Through the generous donations of supporters and the profits raised at the yearly Golf Outing and cocktail party held every November, the Foundation h as been raising funds for t his endeavor and more funds are needed to sustain this bereavement camp for years to come. We would love to raise 1 million dollars and support 1 million children in grief, both in Florida and around the country! If you would like to make a donation or sponsor a camper, please visit The Mark Wandall Foundation’s website at http://themarkwandallfoundation.org. Together, a child’s broken spirit can be transformed into a beautiful spark that will light the way to a happy, healthy and optimistic future.
