What happens when you combine passion, drive and discipline? Beauty in motion.

Ballet and dance education teach lifelong skills that young men and women apply to their professional and personal lives. Poise, posture, musicality, precision, fitness, grace, dedication and discipline are just a few of the abilities fostered in dancers through their training. Often dance students outperform others in regular school and life pursuits. When young people fall in love with dance, they carry a passion for beauty and grace with them for the rest of their lives.

At Sun Valley Ballet our goal is to give our students these skills wrapped in the beautiful package of ballet and dance, through lessons and performance opportunities. From the youngest children to the adults who wish to continue their love for dance, we offer classes for everyone, including ballet, tap, jazz, modern, and hip-hop.

New Open Classes on Saturdays will hopefully bring in students, professionals and adults

Every Step of the Way + from the community. We want to give access to the ballet and dance we love to share. We also offer students, professionals and the community the opportunity to perform and to be involved in a professional production twice per year, including the famous ‘Nutcracker’ in the winter; and this year we will present ‘Coppélia’ plus a contemporary medley in the spring.

This year’s ‘Nutcracker’ will be an all-new production with original choreography set by our new Artistic Director, Anna Duvall, who has a keen eye for design, aesthetics and theatrical flair. Her staging is sure to delight all audiences, young and old. All students who are enrolled in the school will have the opportunity to participate in ‘The Nutcracker’ and other productions.

We are also considering an all boys’/mens’ class in the near future. Recent research has shown that it is beneficial for gentlemen to train amongst other gentlemen. This leads to healthy competition and robust flair and fun for jumps, turns and other technical feats. If you are interested or know someone who might be, please contact our school administrator. We always need male dancers!

Besides a new studio and Artistic Director, we are rolling out the American Ballet Theatre®, National Training Curriculum in all of the Sun Valley Ballet classes. This will allow students to progress (under professional direction and syllabi) through the levels (with health guidelines for developmental stages) created by the ABT® NTC curriculum. Our talented instructors (Lyn Crandall, Danielle Essma and Kassidy Thompson) will begin the process of becoming certified in this curriculum, guided by Director Duvall and through the ABT® Certification program. She comes to us with a masters in ballet pedagogy from New York University and American Ballet Theatre® and full certification in the NTC curriculum. Before that she trained at the Bolshoi Ballet School in Russia, and danced professionally for the Colorado Ballet, California Ballet and around the world.

Sun Valley Ballet is now enrolling! Classes start soon, so please contact us right away to reserve your spot in class! See you soon!

Sincerely, Sun Valley Ballet

Sun Valley Ballet School has begun the process of rolling out a specific graded curriculum, which is outlined in the American Ballet Theatre® National Training Curriculum. This first year will be a transitional year, as we begin to bring all the students and teachers to the same page.

Each level follows a structured syllabus that recognizes cognitive, emotional and physical development. Students aged three to six are placed by age while students aged seven and up are placed by knowledge, ability and potential.

All students receive bi-annual progress reports and are advanced only when the teaching team believes more advanced work will be beneficial to the student.

Sun Valley Ballet School offers a variety of classes at our two campuses, Ketchum and Hailey. See our 2016-2017 School Year Schedules below!

Children’s Division Leotard Pricing**: All Leotards: $25 Ballet Slippers: $20 Tights: $10/$12 **PLEASE NOTE: Any uniform items purchased online may not be returned or exchanged at the SVB School If Your Dancer Forgets His or Her Uniform In the event that your child has forgotten his or her uniform, the SVB School has a bin of spare shoes, and leotards (select sizes/colors) that your child can borrow for the day. Students have 2 weeks to launder and return borrowed uniform items back to the SVB School. If your child’s size is unavailable to borrow, you as the parent will be contacted with the choice to purchase a new leotard. Students will not be issued a new leotard unless consent has been granted by a parent for the purchase. Students who arrive unprepared and are unable to secure another uniform for class will be asked to observe class for the day. This observation will not count towards a student’s total absences.

Placement The first two weeks of the school year will be used to reassess all student placement. As there may be some shift in class assignments during that time, the specific dress code outlined above will not be required until September 26, 2016. Students should still dress neatly and abide by the hair guidelines and no ‘junk’ policy in the meantime.

+ Dress Code Leotards, tights and ballet slippers may be purchased at the SVB School. Jazz Shoes, Tap Shoes and skirts may be purchased online (Amazon, Capezio, Discount Dance, etc.), and are not carried/available for purchase at the SVB School. Students who are not in dress code (this includes having hair properly done for class) may be asked to either fix their attire, or sit out and observe class for that day.

Sun Valley Ballet Hair and Jewelry Policies For the safety and etiquette of the ballet class, only small pierced earrings may be worn. No other jewelry including necklaces, watches, bracelets, or rings may be worn during class. Girls’ hair must be secured in a neat bun for ballet class. The bun will keep hair out of eyes, off of the neck, and will allow for proper spotting. If your daughter has short hair, and cannot be placed in a bun, then her hair must be neatly secured off of her face with headbands, hair clips, etc. SVB School Staff can assist students in the first two weeks of the program, but after that students/parents are responsible for seeing that hair is properly done for class. Messy, unsecured hair will be treated as a violation of the uniform. Students may be asked to leave class and return when hair is properly done. Basic Ballet Bun Supplies: •Hair gel and/or hairspray •At least 8 bobby pins •1 hair elastic •1 hair net •Comb or brush Instructions: I. Comb hair into a high ponytail and secure with hair elastic. Be certain that ponytail is tight and that bangs and ‘wispies’ are held back with gel or hair spray.

II. Twist the length of the ponytail.

III. Wrap the twisted ponytail in the same direction, in a flat circle against the head, to form a bun.

IV. Secure the end with a hairpin. V. Wrap the hairnet around the bun 2-3 times, tucking the ends under the bun.

VI. Secure the bun with bobby pins at 4 points around the circle (top bottom and sides). Use two bobby pins at each point and make sure the pins cross one another as they enter the bun. VII. Secure the bun with hairpins at 4 points around the circle (the corners between the bobby pins). Again cross the hairpins for security.

VIII. Add flowers or bows if you wish!

School, and families will be notified via email when students may be excused for this reason Unexcused absences include, but are not limited to:

o Vacations o Other after-school activities (**Speak to Director about exceptions) o Absences where the SVB School has not been notified with a reason

Wellness Policy: Students who are exhibiting contagious/serious symptoms (fever, rash, nausea, vomiting

etc.) are STRONGLY encouraged to stay home and not attend classes so as to prevent further exacerbating their illness or infecting other students/faculty. Students who arrive at SVB experiencing these symptoms, or who develop these symptoms during class, will be asked to observe class or will be sent home with a parent/guardian. Please note that SVB cannot and will not provide medication (pain killers, cold medication, etc.) to minors. Students should be fever-free for at least 24 hours before returning to class

II. DROP-OFF/ PICK-UP POLICY For the safety of our dancers, all students are required to wear street clothes over their uniforms when entering/exiting the SVB studios. Though time may be tight, it is important to arrive for ballet class prepared and prior to the scheduled start time. In the event that a student does arrive late, the student must wait until a pause between exercises and then receive permission from the teacher to enter the room. For the safety of the dancers and to ensure a proper warm up, students who arrive more than 15 minutes late will not be permitted to dance. They will be asked to sit out and observe class. If you are waiting for your young dancer in the building, you can wait in the Lounge or the Education Office.

Things to know about the SVB School 2016 – 2017

III. PARENT OBSERVATION Parent Observation is held twice each year; once at the end of the fall semester, and again at the end of the year. Class observation is not permitted outside of designated times. IV. SVB PERFORMANCES There are two optional performances scheduled for the 2016-2017 school year. The Nutcracker is scheduled for December 9th – 11th, 2016 and the Coppélia & Spring Medley performance is scheduled for May 5th & 6th, 2017. Rehearsals for these performances will be minimal and scheduled around regularly scheduled class time when possible. Students, who are interested in performing, must confirm their participation and pay a $45 nonrefundable fee to cover costuming and rehearsal costs by October 31st & March 31st. Commitment forms and rehearsal schedules will be emailed out prior to the start of the production rehearsal process. PERFORMANCES OUTSIDE OF SVB Students are not permitted to participate in any outside ballet performances without the consent of SVB School Staff and the permission of Anna Duvall, Artistic Director. All students interested in performing in outside productions, including outside productions of The Nutcracker, must contact Nicole Ching with all rehearsal and performance details; requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis. V. LEVELS AND PLACEMENT: ABT’S NATIONAL TRAINING CURRICULUM Our goal is to create engaging, appropriate and challenging classrooms for all students in the program while adhering to the guidelines for age and development of students in ABT’s National Training Curriculum. Outside training/private instruction in ballet is not recommended, as it may conflict with ABT’s training philosophies. Students are allowed to take classes outside the SVB School in other dance mediums (i.e. jazz, modern, tap, etc.). A note about pointe work: Students may begin pointe work only at the recommendation of the teacher. Dancing en pointe requires strong technique, muscle control, mental readiness and maturity to avoid injury. As a child is growing, the bones in the feet are ossifying from soft cartilage to strong bone. For this reason, pointe work does not begin until Level 4/5 at the SVB. VI. PROGRESS REPORTS AND EXAMINATIONS Every student will receive one written progress report during the academic year to be distributed at the beginning of the second semester. A second evaluation report will be given at the end of the spring semester in the form of an end-of-year examination. Based upon examination results and faculty recommendations, students are then pre-placed for the next school year. In the future (*starting 2017 – 2018), examinations will be held once during the school year, and will assess a student’s progress to the next level. Missed examinations cannot be made up at any time. Examinations will be scheduled in April (*2017 – 2018). Please note: SVB School Faculty reserves the right to exclude a student from the examination process if it is felt that he or she has missed too much of the requisite material. (See SVB SCHOOL POLICIES: ATTENDANCE (9), for details). The prime objective of the SVB School is the wellbeing of each and every student. Please recognize that the parameters by which a student’s work is assessed in a ballet school is very different from that in an academic school. At SVB, we take into account a student’s technical ability, age, stage of development, and how well a student fits within a group. These are all important points to consider in assuring that each student fulfills his or her potential. In our experience, many students need to stay at the same level for as many as two years in order to achieve the proficiency needed to move on and thrive in the next.
