Sumter Electric Membership Corporation SEMCO NEWS Official Member Newsletter July 2017 Chairman’s Report Chairman Jernigan’s remarks addressed the success of the cooperative business model. He reminded members that in the 1930s the federal government and electric cooperatives formed what has proven to be one of the most successful public/private partnerships in our nation’s history. He added that the strength of the cooperative business model and the network of sister cooperatives have enabled local, not-for-profit electric cooperatives to serve sparsely populated rural areas in the United States for 80 years and positioned them well to continue serving consumers for the foreseeable future. Jernigan then paid tribute to Milton Hagerson, who passed away in July 2016. “Milton Hagerson was a beloved member of the cooperative family who represented the members of Sumter County on the Board of Directors for 22 years. The 2016 annual report is dedicated to him in deep appreciation for his years of service and his lifelong support of the cooperative program,” Jernigan stated. He concluded his remarks by thanking members for their continued support of the cooperative. Executive Report President/CEO Ted McMillan’s remarks focused primarily on Sumter EMC’s new Cooperative Solar program and the significant change it represents in the cooperative’s ability to meet the growing demand from consumers for renewable energy. McMillan added details about Sumter EMC’s Cooperative Solar program and touted the program’s ability to deliver all the benefits of solar energy with none of the hassles and problems associated with a rooftop solar installation. Through participation in large utility-scale solar farms, Sumter EMC is able to deliver solar energy to its members across its distribution system grid. McMillan mentioned a number of programs sponsored by Sumter EMC to encourage youth leadership development. He then recognized Sumter EMC’s applicant, Morgan Raylee Lamb, who was awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the Walter Harrison Scholarship fund. Ms. Lamb is the daughter of Sumter EMC members, Randy and Angel Lamb of Plains, and she plans to use the scholarship in her pursuit of a pharmacy degree. He encouraged members to take advantage of a number of marketing programs offered and closed by thanking our state and federal legislators for their ongoing support of issues impacting rural Georgians. Treasurer’s Report Secretary-Treasurer Charles E. Hart reported that Sumter EMC experienced another successful year in 2016. During the 2016 year, capital credits totaling $1,138,000 were refunded to members. Executive Report

The Board of Directors of Sumter EMC, in accordance with Articles IV and VII of the bylaws of Sumter EMC Foundation, Inc. reappointed the following directors to serve on the Foundation Board of Trustees for a successive two-year term from May 2017 to May 2019: John T. Argo, Jr., Sumter County; Claudia Black, Webster/Randolph Counties; Ronald Dupree, Sumter County; Dennis Jones, Schley County; Rev. Jack D. Ray, Stewart/Quitman Counties; and Joseph Williams, Stewart/Quitman Counties. Ted McMillan, Sumter EMC President/CEO, reappointed Greg Crowder and Andrea Walker to serve as Employee Trustees for a successive one-year term ending May 2018. The Board of Trustees is comprised of Sumter EMC members who serve on a voluntary basis. Trustees distribute the funds raised through Operation Round Up® (ORU). At their May 16, 2017 meeting, the Sumter EMC Foundation Board awarded

$23,326.94 from ORU funds. The following organizations received grants: Georgia Sheriffs’ Youth Homes, $1,200; Koinonia Farm, $1,500; Lee County Library, $4,250; Lee County Middle School West, $4,992.94; Lumpkin Police Dept, $4,784; Prevent Blindness Georgia, $1,000; Stewart County Sheriff’s Office, $5,000; and Sumter County 4-H, $600. The Sumter EMC Foundation is funded by ORU money donated by Sumter EMC members. The electric bills of participating members are rounded up each month to the next dollar. Every penny collected is given back to local communities within Sumter EMC’s service area through grants to local schools and civic or charitable organizations. To date, grants totaling more than $914,279 have been awarded from ORU. If you do not already participate in ORU, but would like to become a contributing member, just call Sumter EMC today and ask to be added to the ORU donors.

Election of Directors

Rev. Jack D. Ray, Chairman of the 2017 Nominating Committee, presented four nominees for election: Michael D. Webb, Chattahoochee County; Christi E. Dockery, Lee County; Charles E. Hart, Schley County; and Lawrence Williams, At-large. The membership elected the four nominees, as presented, to serve for a three-year term. Following the annual meeting, a special meeting of the Board of Directors was held to elect officers for the 2017-2018 year. Mr. Bob Jernigan was elected Chairman, Dr. Cecil O. Myers as Vice-Chairman, Mr. Charles E. Hart as Secretary-Treasurer and Mr. Michael D. Webb as Assistant Secretary.

Grand Prize Greg Crowder, Sumter EMC Vice President of Marketing and Administration, presented Thomas J. Hunter from Preston (pictured) with the grand prize, a $2,000 Sumter EMC appliance sales and service center gift certificate. Hattie L. Nealy from Preston won the second prize, a 65-inch Samsung Smart color television, and Edna F. Baker of Buena Vista won the prize drawing for a microwave oven.

Notice of Last Date to Claim Refund ChecksIn compliance with O.C.G.A. § 44-12-190 of The Disposition of Unclaimed Property Act, Sumter EMC is attempting to locate former members whose refund checks were issued between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012 for membership fees and deposits that were returned by the U.S. Post Office as “undeliverable” or have otherwise been unclaimed. A current list of these members is listed below and is also posted for your review at our website, www.sumteremc.com, and at the following office locations: Sumter EMC Headquarters, 1120 Felder Street, Americus, GA (M - F, 8:30 a.m. - 6 p.m., Saturday,

9 a.m. - 2 p.m.); the Southern District Office, 133 Century Road West, Leesburg, GA and the Cusseta District Office, 300 A US Highway 520, Cusseta, GA (M - F, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m., closed all day Saturday). The last possible date to claim these funds is October 15, 2017. If these funds are not claimed by this date, they will be delivered to the Georgia Department of Revenue, as permitted by O.C.G.A. § 44-12-190. After this date, any attempts to reclaim your property will need to be directed to the Georgia Department of Revenue.
