PONDERING WITH PASTOR MARK

"Now the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them;

they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them.” -

Revelation 21:3

A Sunday school teacher asked her students where God lived. After the

usual answers of heaven and in my heart, Bobby spoke up and said,

“God lives in the bathroom at our house!” “Why the bathroom?”

inquired the teacher. “I don’t know,” replied Bobby. “I only know that

my Dad gets up every morning and beats on the bathroom door where

my sister is taking forever to get ready for school and exclaims, ‘My

God, are you still in there?’ God lives in the bathroom at our house.”

Where does God live at your house? Is God on the front porch looking

in or locked in the bathroom trying to get out? “The dwelling of God is

with people!” Eugene Peterson puts it this way: “Look, look, God has

moved into the neighborhood, making {God’s} home with men and

women. They’re {God’s} people. {God will} wipe every tear from

their eyes…. and make everything new.” Where is God dwelling at

your house?

Throughout all the preparations of getting ready for Houston with the

nine High School youth, I noticed that God is closely residing within

each of them. I paused to thank God for making His home with them!

Carmen Briones, McKenzye Bruss, Emma Elling, Heidi Agnew,

Hannah Fox, Dylan Foulkes, Brady Kirchberg, and Kase Tadych are

amazing people along with Troy Tadych, Toni Fox and Carmen Bruss

(Our adult chaperones). They will represent the presence of God with

joy. I am fortunate to be in their presence as we experience “This

Changes Everything!” Please add all of us to your prayers this month.

After the past two weeks of horrific challenges between our Palestinian

and Israeli sisters and brothers, the conversations and decisions around

sharing Jerusalem as their capital have taken a turn. This city of

Jerusalem is sacred to Muslim, Jewish and Christian people. In recent

days, I’ve noticed moments of dualistic and exclusion decisions that

divide and segregate people – this makes my spirit sigh!

Amidst our grief and sadness, we welcome God

making all things new with the promise: “I am the

Resurrection and the life!” I simply need to believe

this, even in sacred places like Jerusalem. We are

reminded that God dwells in each of them.

With Sunday School and confirmation celebrations

marking the end of education programs in spring, we

shift into a new summertime gear, offering through

worship, bible study--a small group formation with

the story of the two disciples who meet Christ on the

Emmaus Road. This opportunity of making all things

new is another way of experiencing transformation in

community.

We are providing space to notice that God is at home

in us.

We are in good company – thanks be to God!

Life Together in Christ

by Ruth Haley Barton

Through worship, bible study

and small group formation we

will be entering the story of the

two disciples who meet Christ on

the Emmaus Road. Ruth offers

an interactive guide for small

groups of spiritual companions who are ready to

encounter Christ in transforming ways—right where

they are on the road of real life.

For me, this is a compelling vision for the role

of community in our spiritual transformation. The

resource provides practical guidance in the attitudes,

practices and experiences that open us to Christ’s

transforming presence—so that we can embark on

the journey together.

Our hope is to offer these four opportunities in a

variety of settings--Faith classrooms, coffee shops,

the labyrinth, park shelters, or the homes of those

leading each group. Our walk to Emmaus will begin

the first Sunday of June at worship. All small

groups will begin in the middle of July. There will

be four sessions:

Welcoming the Stranger

The Nature of the Spiritual Journey

Finding our story in God’s story

You are witnesses of these things

Come and walk with us as we experience

transformation in community,

Mark Petersen – Renewal Pastor

Small Group Formation at Faith

Part of the renewal ministry format in the first

year is dwelling in the Word as a spiritual process

around the same biblical passage. We have done

this with Romans12 since September 1. Dwelling

in the Word is central to the process. The joy of

this year for me has been relationship building,

meeting monthly with our renewal team while

practicing the sacred rhythms, bible study and

strengthening the soul of leadership with council

members and staff.

Small group formation is something we initiated

with the Cottage Meetings in fall and would like to

expand during the summer months. On behalf of

the Renewal Team, I would like to invite all people

of Faith to consider gathering in small groups four

times during July and August. Each person serving

on the renewal team will meet in small groups at a

variety of locations pondering our life together in

Christ. The scripture focus during this time will

be the Walk to Emmaus in Luke 24. I will be

preaching on this portion of the Gospel of Luke

throughout the summer months, using a new

resource:

RightNOW Media

Subscription Termination

Have you used this Faith resource? Faith has

offered this online Christian education video

library to our members for the past 18

months, promoting it through bulletin notices,

Sunday pre-service projections and emails.

Recently, the RightNOW management has

informed me that participation levels are

extremely low. The subscription costs $130

per month. Unless there is strong support for

continuing this program, the council has

agreed that the subscription should be ended.

If you use the service and want it to continue,

please call me by June 7.

Youth Group Prepares to

Flock to Houston for Youth Gathering

Nine youth and four adult leaders have been prepar-

ing for a year to attend the Youth Gathering in Hou-

ston Texas at the end of June. The event, themed

"This Changes Everything" will bring more than

30,000 youth together for a week of faith formation

via days spent in interactive learning, worship, Bible

study, service, and fellowship.

As a final fundraiser, the youth are organizing a Fla-

mingo Flocking event (see the pink flyer included in

this newsletter). This event gives you the opportunity

to fill the yard of your friend, family, or neighbor.

Don't want to get flocked yourself? You can buy Anti

-Flocking insurance! Flocks and Insurance can be

purchased now. The Flamingo Migrations will begin

in June. Contact information and more are on the fly-

er, with order forms on the back of the flyer. All

forms can be turned into the church office or any

youth or leader on the trip.

Thank you for supporting us as we learn how "This

Changes Everything"
