Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – ELCA

South-Central Synod of Wisconsin

MESSAGE FROM PASTOR LISA

When I teach the ten commandments, I’m very careful with “Honor

your father and mother.” Years ago, I knew a kid who was being

abused by his noncustodial parent. Despite evidence of the abuse, the

judge continued to allow visitation.

I knew about this before I had to teach his confirmation class the ten

commandments. When we got to this commandment, I told them par-

ents are called by God to create a safe home, rooted in respect and

love. I reminded them this is not always easy, given our world and our

own upbringings.

However, if a parent makes a child feel unsafe or unloved, then that

parent is not fulfilling God’s call. Parents can’t always protect their

children—there are forces beyond our control. But I told these kids it’s

not always possible to honor people who aren’t acting honorably. This

kid said to me, “You mean we don’t have to honor them if they treat us

like animals?”

The same applies to our government. U.S. Attorney General Jeff Ses-

sions claimed we must obey the government because of Paul’s words

to the Christians in Rome. “Let every person be subject to the govern-

ing authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those

authorities that exist have been instituted by God” (Romans 13:1).

He went on to say that “Orderly and lawful processes are good in

themselves. Consistent, fair application of the law is in itself a good

and moral thing and that it protects the weak, protects the lawful.”

I have to stop our Attorney General right there. The fair application of

the law is only good if the law is good. Orderly processes of the law

are only as good as the law. So how do we know if the law in question

is good?

Let’s look at the verses before Romans 13:1. “If your enemies are hun-

gry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to

drink” (12:20). And after: “The commandments…are summed up in

this word, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. Love does no wrong to a

neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law’” (13:9,10).

Sometimes it can be hard to figure out if a law is based in love. A law

might help some and not others. One question we can ask is does this

law harm anyone? Does it address basic needs like hunger and health?

Does it allow for a loving environment?

The Apostle Paul tells us that “Love does no wrong to

a neighbor.” I believe that separating children from

their parents is not based in love. And not working to

reunite the children whom we have taken from their

parents is not based in love.

My prayer is that our country will lift up family val-

ues by valuing all families. My prayer is that we will

reunite the families we have separated and offer long

term psychological care to the children we have

harmed. As Paul writes, “Love is the fulfilling of the

law.”

Dig out your yellow God's Work Our Hands t shirts

for Sept 9th. This is the first day of Sunday School,

and we will have one worship service at 8 a.m.

followed by servant projects. If you have ideas for

servant projects, let Pastor Lisa know.

MINISTRY’S

You are invited to small group ministry

community and at Faith Lutheran.

Through worship, bible study and small group

formation we will be entering the story of the two

disciples who meet Christ on the Emmaus

Road. Ruth offers an interactive guide for small

groups of spiritual companions who are ready to

encounter Christ in transforming ways—right where

they are on the road of real life.

For me, this is a compelling vision for the role

of community in our spiritual transformation. The

resource provides practical guidance in the attitudes,

practices and experiences that open us to Christ’s

transforming presence—so that we can embark on

the journey together.

All the sessions will be uploaded to YouTube

and any person who connects with our web page

will be able to enjoy the four themes. There will be

four sessions:

Mark Petersen – Renewal Pastor

Small Group Formation at Faith

Part of the renewal ministry format in the first

year is dwelling in the Word as a spiritual process

around the same biblical passage. We have done

this with Romans12 since last September. Dwell-

ing in the Word is central to the process. The joy of

this year for me has been relationship building,

meeting monthly with our renewal team

while practicing the sacred rhythms, bible study

and strengthening the soul of leadership with coun-

cil members and staff.

Sign up for a Renewal Group this Summer

Small group formation is something we initiated

with the Cottage Meetings in fall and would like to

expand during the summer months. On behalf of

the Renewal Team, I would like to invite all people

of Faith to consider gathering in small groups four

times during July and August. Each person serving

on the renewal team will meet in small groups at a

variety of locations pondering our life together in

Christ. The scripture focus during this time

will be the Walk to Emmaus in Luke 24. I will be

preaching on this portion of the Gospel of Luke

throughout the summer months, using a

new resource:
