Full Day

Camp Roanoke DiscoveryAges 5-11. Calling all campers entering Kindergarten through 5th grades who are looking for an outdoor adventure based day camp experience. Participants will be introduced to a wide range of activities that include: archery (ages 7 and up), arts and crafts, field games, leadership development, rock wall climbing, hiking, creeking, special events, a weekly field trip and much more! Included in the costs are a morning and afternoon snack, a delicious hot lunch and field trip fees. Each week will also include a trip to Splash Valley Water Park! Don’t miss out on this great experience as Discovery is limited to 40 campers per one week session. Free satellite transportation is available from Tanglewood Mall.

Green Ridge Full Day Summer CampAges 5-11. Green Ridge Recreation Center’s most popular summer day camp! Your child will spend the summer or just a couple weeks (10 to choose from) with us enjoying all that Green Ridge and the Roanoke Valley has to offer. Your camper’s week will be filled with arts, crafts, sports, games, swimming at Splash Valley and the indoor pool, field trips and more. They are sure not to get bored! All activities and two daily snacks are included in the weekly fee. Campers must pack a daily lunch, swimsuit, towel and athletic shoes. A $25 per week deposit is due at time of registration and theremaining balance will be scheduled through automatic draft of your bank card. Green Ridge members receive an additional $10 discount per week.

Full Day Specialty CampsThroughout this guide, you will see that many of the half-day camps also have full-day options. This service allows

your camper to enjoy the specialty camps of their choosing and you get to know they are being taken care of all day. Depending on the start time of the speciality camp, campers will be dropped off either at Green Ridge Recreation Center or their specialty camp. Transportation to/from Green

Ridge is provided if the camp is off-site. Look for the Sun icon throughout the guide to find the camps that offer this

full-day option.

Explore NatureAges 3-5. Summers are made for exploration! Join our staff in exploring nature’s wonder in this three-day mini camp just for preschoolers. Campers will go on hikes, play games, and make nature crafts all at our beautiful Walrond Park. Please bring a water bottle each day!

Messy MasterpiecesAges 3-5. Your child will be introduced to the wonderful world of art, focusing on creativity while improving motor skills and dexterity each week. Green Ridge Half Day Summer CampAges 5-11. Need something fun for your kid this summer yet don’t quite need full day camp care for you child? If so, our NEW half day version of Green Ridge Summer Day Camp is perfect for you! Energetic, experienced staff will lead children in a summer of F-U-N! Kids entering grades 1-5 in August 2012 will enjoy activities that include arts & crafts, cooking, games, trips, swimming, and much more each week. All activities and daily snacks are included in weekly fee. Campers must bring a swimsuit and towel. A $25 deposit per child per week is due at registration; remaining balance will be scheduled payments through automatic draft of your bank card. Ten weeks to choose from.

Little Dippers CampAges 3-5. This is the opportunity for our young preschool children to experience water safety and swimming skills through a series of fun and interactive activities. Children will have a group swimming lesson, crafts, water safety lesson, and exploratory play in a structured environment led by certified Water Safety Instructors.

Mad Science CampAges 6-12. Your child will be able to touch, see, hear, smell and taste what science is really all about. This camp is a daily combination of in-class discovery and exploration, outdoor games and physical activities and hands-on applications of the scientific principles presented. Campers will create a variety of take-home projects and participate in snack-tivities while exploring how science affects the world around us.

Drawing CampAges 9-12. Learn how to draw still life, landscapes and figure drawing. Lessons will teach students how to solve drawing problems such as outlining, perspective and shading.

Super Soakers CampAges 6-12. Get ready to experience WATER! Participants will be transportated to different areas in Roanoke and New River Valley to become exposed to different types of aquatic environments. Trips may include Smith Mountain lake, New River, and of course SPLASH VALLEY! Activites will include swimming, tubing, snorkeling, and water safety. Participants should have passed Level 2 swimming class. Camp will not meet on July 4th.

Splash CampAges 6-12. This is your chance to experience all the aquatics features Roanoke County has to offer. Camp participants will spend time enjoying both our indoor and outdoor water parks, water games, crafts, and activities under the direct supervision of our Ellis certified lifeguard staff. Participants should be comfortable in the water and life jackets are provided.

Cake And Candy CampAges 9-12. Do you want to be the next Ace of Cakes? Learn basic cake decorating techniques and make an assortment of candies as well. Be prepared for a fun week of cake and candy making that you can share with your family and friends. Each participant will receive their very own cake decorating set.

Summer Fun

American Girls CampAges 6-12. Bring your American Girl doll (or favorite doll) to summer camp! Each day we will have a new theme for you and your doll. Over the course of the week we’ll have an American Doll day at the beach, a birthday party, a fashion party, and a slumber party. We will make art projects for both the dolls and the girls as we paint, stamp, sculpt, collage and draw. Take home projects each day. Bring your favorite doll and come to play!

Cooking Camp For KidsAges 6-12. Kitchen safety and how-to’s will be taught in this yummy, fun class for your little chef. Counselor In Training ProgramLooking for a great summer experience working with children? Green Ridge’s CIT (Counselor in Training) program is a wonderful opportunity for teens 14-17 years old who want to further develop their leadership and communication skills, as well as gain experience in planning and conducting activities for young children. Green Ridge camps operate from June 11-August 17.

During the summer, CIT’s will work as part of a staff team to facilitate activities for children. They will gain valuable work experience, learn new skills, practice leadership, explore future career possibilities, and participate as a team member with adult staff supervision, all while having fun! CIT’s will be assigned to work with specific camps each week. A typical work day runs from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. with a 30 minute lunch midday

Parents and teens must complete all required application forms by 5:00 pm, May 17. Completed application forms should be placed in an envelope labeled “Attention: Tammy Tejada” and returned to the front desk at Green Ridge Recreation Center. Alternately, applications may be mailed to: 7415 Wood Haven Road, Roanoke, VA 24019 or faxed to (540) 265-1157 “Attention: Tammy Tejada”. For more information, please call 540-777-6315.

A limited number of CIT positions are available and applicants will go through an ap-plication screening and interview process. If your application is selected, we will call to set up an interview. If selected as a counselor, payment will be taken for the program if chosen. Fee of $200 includes required staff training, CIT manual, camp supply costs and staff t-shirt.

If so we have the perfect camp that will allow them to spend a week with an area varsity baseball team improving their baseball skills. Softball CampsAges 6-12. Our youth softball camps are designed to teach fundamental softball skills in a fun and exciting environment. Each camp is lead by the Virginia Extreme Force travel softball coaches with numerous players from local middle and high schools acting as counselors for the week. The registration fee includes a tee shirt, drinks, snacks and prizes throughout the week. Registration is limited to allow for a camper to staff ratio of 7:1. Each participant is required to come prepared for play which includes active wear, a helmet and glove. Campers may bring their own bat if desired.

Archery CampAges 8-14. Roanoke County’s archery program is designed to open the world of archery to children in a safe and fun environment. The camp’s core content includes archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration, and self-improvement. All instructors are certified by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) and have undergone a certification program referred to as BAI, ‘Basic Archery Instructor.’ The program is the perfect opportunity to open the world of archery to children. Please note that this program will focus on the skills of archery, not hunting.

Camp Roanoke Discovery (Day-Only)Ages 5-11. Calling all campers entering Kindergarten through 5th grades who are looking for an outdoor adventure based day camp experience. Participants will be introduced to a wide range of activities that include: archery (ages 7 and up), arts and crafts, field games, leadership development, rock wall climbing, hiking, creeking, special events, a weekly field trip and much more! Included in the costs are a morning and afternoon snack, a delicious hot lunch and field trip fees. Each week will also include a trip to Splash Valley Water Paark! Free satellite transportation is available from Tanglewood Mall.

Babysitting CampAges 12-17. Learn First Aid and CPR for adult, child, and infant, as well as games and activities to do with children while babysitting. We will also explore the business side of babysitting by creating your own business cards and flyers to take with you!

Culinary CampAges 12-17. Each day at the Culinary Camp will have a theme, including Southern Buffet, Mexican Fiesta, Sports Party Madness, Chinese Banquet, and Classic Sunday Brunch. Through the themes, you will master a variety of cooking styles and techniques, all leading up to a magnificent ‘Iron Chef’ style cooking challenge where campers will be in teams to create, dishes using the secret ingredient. You will participate in many exciting activities like horseback riding, canoeing, riflery, and swimming, just to name a few! Lunch along with everything else is included in this day camp. Vans will depart from Green Ridge Recreation Center each day at 8:30 AM and return at 4:30 PM.

Pamper Me Spa WeekAges 12-17. Each day the girls will learn ways to pamper themselves and get to enjoy a homemade spa treatment.
