I hope that this newsletter finds everyone doing well.

I want to welcome a new chapter to Region 4. The USS Loma Prieta become a chapter in training in August and is located in San Francisco California. Their support chapter is the USS Golden Gate, also in San Francisco. Please make Zach Perkins and the crew of the USS Loma Prieta feel welcome in Region 4.

Did you hear? The Region 4 is hosting a conference on October 7-9, 2011. And it is in Las Vegas. This is a chance for members of Region 4 to get together to discuss issues that affect the members and chapters of Region 4. We will also announce the winners of the 2010 Region 4 Awards at dinner. Dinner, you ask? Yep, dinner. Dinner will be an Italian buffet. And there’s more. If you get the ‘Blackjack’ package, you get the Sunday breakfast buffet too.

I encourage everyone to attend!

Speaking of attending, I was unable to attend the STARFLEET International Conference 2011 (IC2011). Martin Lessem (from R7) was kind enough to fill in as proxy for Region 4. In addition to Martin representing R4 in the joint Executive Committee/Admiralty Board (ECAB) meeting, for the first time, I was able to conference in to listen to the ECAB meeting and ask questions and make comments as I felt needed. I want to thank Martin for filling in for me and to the Commander, STARFLEET, Dave Blaser for setting up the conference call. Items coming out of the ECAB meeting include a proposal to develop a new database. The proposal is currently out on guru.com. STARFLEET Academy currently has over 2100 courses. Communications is looking at producing a magazine styled CQ for a single issue(#166). This issue will be a proof-of-concept for cost and delivery. The AB discussed allowing regions with no chapters to be represented by a neighboring region. This is to ensure that all members have representation on the AB even if there is no chapter in their region. This only affects 3 regions at this time, Regions 16, 18 and 20. The AB had previously voted to allow region 13 & 14 to temporary merge earlier this year when the RC

STARFLEET’s Annual Awards were handed out at IC2011. Unfortunately, R4 didn’t bring home any of the big ones (Chapter, Member, etc) but we did bring home the newsletter awards. Congratulations to the USS Angeles’ ‘Angel Flight’ for 2011 Best Chapter Newsletter and to the Region 4 Subspace Communicator for 2011 Best Regional Newsletter.

I also want to say Congratulations to Andrey Kuznetsov, of the USS Golden Gate, for not only receiving the Lavar Burton Educational Scholarship, but he was also given a Honorary 3-Year Membership for his outstanding work on STARFLEET’s database. For those of you who don’t know Andrey, he has been working behind the scenes fixing bugs and adding to the database. Thanks for all the hard work Andrey.

he 2011 San Diego Comic Con was another crazy and entertaining event again this year. The crowds were huge and the costumes were aplenty. I was able to attend Wednesday through

Saturday, but had to bow out on Sunday; the weekend was too tiring, and I think I may have consumed too much Romulan Ale the night before. Downtown San Diego is a truly great place for this event. Yeah the convention center could probably stand to be a bit bigger, but the Gas Lamp District was a fun and enjoyable place to spend time in the evenings or to grab a bite to eat during the day. To my amazement, I was able to quickly get into and seated to each place I dined or enjoyed a libation or two.

The convention itself was completely packed with all walks of life, and I think, perhaps, some aliens. As you can see in the picture, a handful of Klingons were in attendance, and they were gracious enough to snap a picture with my Vulcan friend and I. As you can see, since I am an ensign in a red shirt, I am on the far side of theKlingon trio, with a Vulcan shield in between.

Speaking of dressing up, the costuming happens to be my favorite part of The whole event. Some of the people, including myself, spend a great deal of timeand effort constructing, building, and mastering their costumes. You can see inone picture that I am in my Star Fleet uniform, and in the other I am dressed up as the Mad Hatter. While dressed as the Hatter, I must have Received hundreds of requests to take pictures. I now understand the feeling of being a celebrity. I must say: I loved it! I did get a couple dozen requests for pictures in my Star Fleet uniform as well, and most everyone held up their hands and told us to "live long and prosper".

The downside that I noticed was getting in to see the panels. The lines for the main ballrooms were upwards of 3-4 hour waits, especially for Twilight and True Blood. 3 plus hours is not worth the wait to me. Friday, the day I went in uniform, was the day of the Captains panel. Kevin Smith hosted a panel which included William Shatner, Avery Brooks, and Scott Bakula. Much to my despair, arriving over an hour early for the panel was not early enough. And.... I missed the panel. That was the heartbreaker of the day. I understand they had a Khan

shouting contest, which was started by Mr. Shatner himself. "Khaaaaaan". I wanted to scream for missing the panel, but the word Khan was probably not the one I was thinking of.

That is a brief rundown of Comic Con from my perspective. I would urge you all to give it a try one year, it is a lot of fun, especially if you are a people watcher like me. Be warned, however, get tickets early, they sell quickly and are nearly impossible to find as the event gets closer. g

AWN, a space craft will orbit VESTA an asteroid in the asteroid belt. Dawn was built by Orbital Sciences. The Delta II rocket is made by United

Launch Alliance, which is a joint venture of Lockheed Martin and Boeing. Dawn mission has cost $466 million dollars (Delta II Rocket & launch ~54 Million dollars). Original cost was supposed to be 373 million dollars.

Dawn launched in 2007 on Delta II rocket (Model 7925H). Delta II system has been used for 146 launches. It is the most reliable launch vehicle currently in service! The Dawn Spacecraft will travel almost 4 billion miles in almost ten years. Dawn carries two identical framing cameras from Germany, a visual and infrared spectrometer from

Italy (with 6 Gbytes of memory) and a gamma ray and neutron detector from the United States. Each of the two framing cameras have a 1024 x 1024 pixel CCD detector cooled to -60°C and a filter wheel with seven narrow-band filters and one clear filter. Dawn has a special radiation hardened computer with 8 GB of memory on board and a small computer microchip bearing the names of more than360,000 space enthusiasts. With its wide solar arrays extended, Dawn is 19.7 meters (65 ft) long. At 3AU (Astronomical Units) from the sun (right now it is at

2.25AU) the arrays generate 1300W of power. The Dawn spacecraft is propelled by three xenon ion thrusters, not chemical rocket motors. The power from the solar arrays is used to ionize the Xenon gas, accelerating the ions, which is the source of thrust. Dawn's ion drive is capable of accelerating the craft from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 4 days! The three thrusters are never all on at same time, instead they are pulsed. Dawn weighs 2733 pounds with full fuel. The Xenon gas fuel weighs 992 pounds. The chemical fuel (hydrazine) weighs 99 pounds. Dawn uses hydrazine thrusters (chemical propulsion) for trajectory correction maneuvers. Dawn used gravity assist from Mars fly-by in 2009 to get to Vesta

and entered orbit around Vesta on July 15, 2011. Vesta is now 117 million miles from Earth (1.25AU.) Dawn will get as close as 110 miles from surface of Vesta and as far as 1700 miles during its orbits. Dawn will take pictures and measure the chemical composition of Ceres and Vesta. Dawn took more than 500 pictures just during the survey phase. We are now in the studying stage since August 11.

Vesta once had a hot, molten interior that produced lava flows whereas Ceres has always been a cold body, under whose surface possibly frozen water can be found. Five percent of the found meteor samples on Earth are thought to be the result of a collision or collisions with Vesta.

Ceres is the largest resident, while Vesta is the second-largest resident of the asteroid belt which lies between Mars and Jupiter. Vesta has a diameter

of approximately 330 miles and rotates once every 5.34 hours. Dawn is to orbit Vesta for a year then head to the planetoid Ceres. Dawn arrives at Ceres in February 2015. Orbital insertion date sometime in February 2015. Mission is scheduled to end in July of 2015 unless extended to study other asteroids. g

different ways, mostly it is going to depend on what kind of area you're in. If you are in a wooded area you can to scoop out a pit and line it with pine branches or whatever branches happen to be laying around to help insulate you from the cold. This obviously won't protect you from weather but it will help keep the big heat sink we know as the planet earth from sucking to much of your body warmth away. As far as shelter from rain there are several things you can do. Basic shelters are not to difficult to build. You can start with the bough shelter, root shelter, or use a natural feature like a hollow. I won't go into specifics her because it would take much more space than I was told I have. The important thing to remember is to keep yourself from exposure to the elements. Everyone has seen "Survivor" on TV I'm sure.

I thought for the next few months I would discuss some emergency survival techniques. The ones I'll mostly talk about are for more remote areas, urban survival is a different subject so I'll cover that a little later.

Most of what I know I learned as a kid from my Dad and Uncles while we were camping, and my military training. But I have also read quite a bit in the last few decades. So I'll try to pass on some of that knowledge and experience and maybe you can use it. There are several resources for this information, you can even find military survival guides for free to download.

The three things you need to be most concerned about are shelter, water and food. In that order.

Most people don't realize that exposure will kill you faster than either of the other two. Even in warm weather you can get hypothermia, a cool rain in warm weather will drop your body temp. So if you are placed in a situation where you need to be concerned about your survival your first priorityshould be shelter. This can be done is lots of

"A HERITAGE OF EXCELLENCE"USS Hornet CVS-12 Ship's Creed

On Stardate 2011.0723, a small away team from the USS Loma Prieta ventured out to the USS Hornet memorial and Apollo 11 splashdown anniversary on Alameda Prime. The crew (Cmdr. Zach Perkins, Lt(jg) Tom Hesser, Lt(jg) Brian Schroeder and Yeoman Cindy Bee) boarded the Runabout Outback and headed toward the Alameda system by means of the Bay Bridge warp conduit.

While the crew fully expected to see an aircraft carrier, an Apollo command module, NASA-era space suits, and a wide variety of fighter jets and helicopters; they were surprised to be greeted on their arrival by a fleet of two dozen vintage Shelby Cobras. After spending several hours exploring the halls of the old ship, riding the ancient hydraulic aircraft lifts to the flight deck, sampling barbaric forms of cuisine (that offered no vegetarian options), the crew culminated their mission by riding in a pre-warp prototype of a shuttlecraft they Hornet docents called a “flight simulator”.

All in all, a highly successful away mission. Perkins out.

The Vendors room opened at 9:00 a.m. Thursday

August 11th 2011, for those who were registered. The vendors offered a large selection of various Star Trek merchandise from toys and figure to many unique photos and plaques. Many wonderful celebrities were signing and meeting the fans in the vendor’s room.

Garrett Wang, Voyager’s Harry Kim, opened the convention with talking about his T-shirt from his new venture Cosmic City Tees which he had at his table. The shirt is based on a story from a past convention when he coined the phrase "By The Power of DeLancie," from TNG’s Q John de Lancie.Informed that he recently filmed a pilot where he plays a single father martial arts teacher who has acupuncture clinic.

He continued with his entertaining amusing anecdotes on Voyager. His impersonations of George Takai, DS9’s Avery Brooks and Voyager’s Bob Picardo were exact. He explained that he sharpened his skill during long breaks between takes on Voyager to keep the cast entertained. Wang even does an impersonation of Kate Mulgrew, explaining it was "a part Katherine Hepburn, a little bit helium and a little Smurf," Blast from the past brought Clint Howard, Lee Meriweather, Yvonne Craig to the stage. Back to the 60’s took us back to the days of …well you know. They all gave updates….

Eric Menyuk and Olivia d’bo came up next in the ongoing presentation of celebrities we are encountering. Eric also revealed that after 8 additions, he did not get the role of Data, which went to Brent Spiner. Eric gave up acting and is a lawyer representing disabled children, a noteworthy cause. They took questions from those in line. Olivia had a table in the vendor’s room for meeting fans.

The Enterprise Boys Connor Trineer and Dominic Keating was marvelous as always. Answered questions and gave many entertaining stories from behind the scenes of Enterprise They credited Manny Coto who was made show writer in the fourth and final season. In discussing the cancellation of Enterprise Dominic defended the quality of the show and the writing, and put the blame on UPN who he says didn’t support the show.

Creation Entertainment went all out to make our first convention at the Rio special with all the celebrities they brought and the activities planned.

This was day one and we had three more special fun-filled, jam-packed days and nights to go.

Friday started with a special creation award music video which admirably portrayed all the characters of DSN.

Then the exceptional talent of the DSN Alien panel of Armin Shimerman, Max Grodenchek, Vaughn Armstrong, Nicole DeBoer, Chase Masterson, Casey Biggs and Jeffrey Combs opened the convention after their meet and greet breakfast. They gave most credit to Michael Pillar for DSN in a reflective tone as only they could inspire us. They were truly outstanding.

Walter Koenig took his appearance in true Chekov style. Someone complimented him on his Russian accent, which surprised him. He mentioned over the years he had got a lot of criticism for it and said he had a "special hate" for Internet bloggers and commenter’s who critiqued it. Koenig also thanked all the fans who lobbied to get his recently awarded star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Thunderous applause. Walter also provided stories of appearances with James Doohan and George Takei at store openings and various places, including once in uniform he was mistaken for a bellman at his hotel. Tim Russ’s enthusiastic sense of humor was marvelously entertaining.

Nana Visitor and Rene Auberjonois reunited onstage with their wonderful enjoyable stories. They conveyed their disappointment on DSN ending. Nana stated, “The last two weeks I spent crying. I didn’t want it end.” However, they both were satisfied as they expressed it ended with love. Rene spoke of his current appearances on Warehouse 13.

Jonathan Frakes conquered the stage with his amazing presence and personality. Opened up his set singing Voltaire, and continued with amusing remarks as calling Star Trek: Generations "Two captains in search of a good hair piece." He mingled through the aisles to greet the fans. Answered questions and made comment to Adam gI may have to leave creation. What about the convention banner and program cover, “I can understand William Shatner, and the godfather of Star Trek Leonard Nimoy, but a Jewish android. He was not even human. He may have been a better actor but I outrank him. What’s up with that?” The audience

panel of Louise Sorel, Charles Dierkop, and Tania Lemani providing updates on their lives and reminiscing of Star Trek.

King of Trivia Larry Nemecek held his annual Rapid-Fire Trivia Game with prizes for those who won the challenge.

A special On-Stage Workshop by veteran make-up artist John Paladin. Demonstrated on a volunteer on how make yourself into a Klingon.

The last appearance of the day was the fabulous Star Trek Rat Pack. Max Grodenchik, Armin Schimerman, Vaughn Armstrong, Casey Biggs and Jeffrey Combs provided a fabulous performance to all who attended.

But Friday did not end there. There were parties and events going on as The Grand Rio continued to welcome Star Trek.

Saturday opened with Denise Crosby, Suzie Plakson and John DeLancie. The Klingon Summit caused Klingon Q’hoas with our favorites B’Elor, Lursa, Gowron and Martok as they kept the audience wild in delight in true Klingon form.A fan dressed as a Tribble commented “I’m not afraid of Klingons.” Gowron obtained a Bat’leth and ran after her.The audience went wild then Gowron mingled and found the Tribble and devoured it… just kidding. Claimed they get hairballs.

The beautiful Terry Farrell adorned the stage and greeted by the fans. She introduced her reason for not acting for a few years, her son Max, who is a ‘Legend of Zelda’ fan. She spoke of her family life and now is getting back to acting and her husband is very supportive of her career.

Before Brent Spiner we heard a music video tribute to Jonathan Frakes “Just a Gigalo.”Brent Spiner took control of the stage with his dynamic multitalented personality. His comment on the video, “This is my last Creation Entertainment appearance.” Then I am on the poster and some are not. Those on the poster are more special. Everyone laughs. His comedic presence is hysterical.

One fan asked “How did it feel to be killed off?” His reply was ‘You know it was fiction, right?’When Data was killed off and everyone was leaving the theater, they blew up the Enterprise and

everyone was killed. Actually Paramount killed TNG. How right he is! Another question “How did you have a conversation as Data to Lore and Soong?” Brent replied, “That’s one of the things I do best.” Then he gave a demonstration. Everyone laughed. He has a web series called “Fresh Hell” on you tube (freshhellseries). His modesty is equal to his marvelous sense of humor. Star Trek is humorous and funny then on the other side it was serious and great. Now after 45 years it was humorous enough not take itself too serious.

Lady Kate Mulgrew was in command of the stage where she is at home. She said I have a stalker and he said he would leave me alone if I brought him onstage. Out walked Garrett Wang. After a brief visit Garrett left. Lady Kate informed us of her new show NTSF SD SUV (National Terrorist Strike Force San Diego Sport Utility Vehicle) on adultswim (cartoon network at night). The incomparable Lady Kate left with “Let’s have a Voyager Movie.” Everyone applauded Kate and the comment. We are truly honored with two appearances by this grand lady. (The second tomorrow)

The Magnificent Leonard Nimoy in, sadly, his last Las Vegas convention appearance. The man who set the bar, up in the stars, for Vulcans who followed. It was a difficult act to follow, but the actors that followed gave first class performances as Vulcans. Reminisced on his childhood of how his parent immigrated from Russia to Boston. My parents were aliens and became citizens; I was born in Boston and became an alien. Everyone laughed.

He continued of his beginnings of being an actor in Hollywood and during the day he looked for work and at night he drove a cab. He picked up a fare at a hotel to go to the airport and it was Senator John F. Kennedy.

Ethan Phillips was in top form amusing the audience with his humorous short narratives. He kept everyone laughing. A hard act to follow after Kate and Leonard but Ethan was his unpretentious self as he honored Star Trek fans with compliments of being unbiased, uncynical people. Garrett Wang joined Ethan on stage and assisted him in auctioning a 7 of 9 doll autographed by Jeri Ryan for a friend who has been hospitalized.

Captain Hook will be on stage with you?After a thoroughly enjoyable banter between

the two, Brent left. The stage was enhanced with Patrick as he was joined by Kate Mulgrew and William Shatner to a standing ovation and thunderous applause.

STAR TREK’S ROYAL TRIO, SIR PATRICK, KING WILLIAM AND QUEEN KATE on stage together. Everyone is ecstatic. What a treat. We would not be complete without them.

It was standing room only when security allowed as the six thousand seats were full. Kate made a comment to Patrick about ‘in our case we were captain for seven years’, they glanced at Bill. Bill responded with yes I was captain for only three small years. Slight pause. Look where it got you? The audience roared.

Unfortunately Patrick had to leave to catch a flight to London where he will be performing. He is a very busy man. We were glad to have him for a short time. Kate and Bill spoke about the tribulations of working and family. Bill asked Kate how she dealt with the grueling work schedule with raising a family along with the “hormonal cycle”? “Women rise above that.” The audience applauded. “We stride through life without apologies.” The audience applauds louder.

When Kate was on stage alone she exalted allegiance that “Star Trek fans transcend class, gender and race. They are the most extraordinary, intelligent people in the world.” The audience agreed by a thunderous applause. Now who could argue with that comment?

They gave sensational performances.William Shatner came out alone to standing

ovation. Spoke of Joseph Campbell taught myth and heroes in our culture and often used Star Trek as examples. Mentioned his documentary on EPIX “The Captains” Many in the audience saw it. He informed us of a new documentary on Star Trek fans. We in the front of the auditorium were handed 8x11 sheets of paper in large letters had ‘Fan Addict’ on it. We were to hold them up on cue while everyone hooted. We were to be the last scene of his documentary.

Newcomer to the convention John Cho was welcomed by the fans and joined by George Takei. They were marvelous as they followed the Royal Trio. John commented “I am overwhelmed by the response of fan as I have been greeted ‘welcome to the Star Trek family.”

Jeffrey Combs magnificent performance in “Edgar Allen Poe’s Nevermore” was both melancholy and humorous as he portrayed Poe’s descent into madness.

The elegant style of James Darrin in concert was truly enjoyed by those in attendance.

Followed by “The Party” where the entertainment opened by the humorous Ethan Phillips. Suzie Plakson was enjoyable with a memorable story from her days at Radio City Music Hall. It concluded with the versatility talent of JG Hertzler and Robert O’Reilly. It was a blast.

Sunday began with William Shatner and Patrick Stewart doing their autograph session.

The lovely Grace Lee Whitley, a Star Trek semi regular opened on stage and took us down memory lane with the assistance of Adam.

Then the debonair crooner from DSN, Vic Fontaine arrived with his mobile emitter. Told us how he interacted with the crew of DSN about lessons of life and love. Oh, it’s not Vic; it is James Darrin who is real and not a hologram. He mentioned of this fondness for DSN and how it enriched his life.

The exceptional style of Sir Patrick Stewart impacted the stage. Commented on the autograph session. “I signed a photo of someone who had the photo done last year. I am wearing the same jacket and t-shirt as last year. The audience laughed. Hestarted to take questions from fans and after a few questions someone came to the mike and Patrick stated, “Adam, I told you I didn’t want him in here.” It turned out to be the hilarious Brent Spiner and in a different voice as only he can, asked “I understand > Continued on Next Page >

The Sulu Summit continued with updates and questions. They were informative and reflective.

David Warner, the villain we loved to hate was interviewed onstage by Adam Malin. He played numerous villains.

The beautiful and talented Nichelle Nichols enhanced the stage to end the convention. She was insightful and informative. Many thanks and cheers to Gene Roddenberry and mostly to the talent of Miss Nichols for exceeding class, gender and race, exactly what Kate Mulgrew stated. This is what Star Trek stands for.

Star Trek family is full of multitalented celebrities that were all superb in their appearances. All weekend we were joined by aliens from all planets of the galaxy. Amazingly everyone was congenial had a great time making new friends with humans and aliens. Everyone got along. The Star Trek fans are by far the best. Everyone was courteous and understanding of each other and the many on scooters where careful. This was not an easy feat as there were over six thousand people walking the halls and attending the various events. Many cheers to the Star Trek fans.

A million thanks should go to the creation entertainment volunteers. They worked hard managing the many fans with smiles and kind words. Along with problems as they arose. The Rio staff and other workers were equally wonderful.

Creation Entertainment was extraordinary in their planning with the celebrities and activities, along with the secondary activities and extra opportunities offered. IT WAS THE MOST PHENOMENAL CONVENTION I HAVE ATTENDED IN LAS VEGAS SINCE 2002. IF THEY CAN EQUAL THIS FOR NEXT YEAR’S THE NEXT GENERATION 25th ANNIVERSARY, IT WOULD BE A MOST DELIGHTFUL EXPERIENCE FOR YOU TO ATTEND. g
