Greetings 4th Fleet and Beyond,

Congratulations RADM Chrissy Killian on your appointment as Regional Coordinator, Region 4, STARFLEET. May your time in the Starbase center chair be filled with years of adventure and FUN. I look forward to us working together, sharing some new adventures and having FUN along the way. Thanks to Jeffrey Salamon for stepping up and offering to lead the Region. To former RC Ed Nowlin, your years of service to the Region and her members is appreciated by many near and far.

With a new RC in place, I thought now would be a good time to introduce the next generation Subspace Communicator. I’ve had this idea since I became Editor, however due to my lack of knowl-edge of MS Publisher 2003, I had to wait. Thanks to some new graphics sites I was told about from the STARFLEET-L discussion list, you will see some of my new collection throughout each issue.

One of the most notable changes is the missing black outline for each page. However I did keep a 3/4” border on the left side of each page. This is done so that when you print an issue on 3-hole punched paper, you can keep them in a binder for your recruitment table.

You will continue to see your favorite regional reports, regular contributors, Stardates, and the Cadet Review pictures to name a few items, while the overall look and feel of the SC has been jazzed up with more graphics and color. I have moved several pages around, so please take your time to look this issue over to find your old favorites. The 4th Fleet listings now show ship/chapter logos, chapter web site URL’s and have moved from the back half the front, right before the MSR’s. Various regular and occasional columns now have more of a individual look with graphics and color. A couple of regular columnists did not make this issue, due to hailing frequencies problems, however they will return in future issue.

No matter what changes I’ve made, I still depend on you the membership to submit articles, pictures and other items. Remember that the submission deadline has been moved from the 10th to the 20th of the even months (Feb, Apr, Jun, Aug, Oct, Dec). Anything received passed this deadline will be considered for future issues, so PLEASE, submit on time. Know that articles and photos you submit to your own Chapter/Ship newsletter are always welcome in the SC too. So please consider submitting to the SC and the CQ so that a wider audiences may read and see your work.

With this next generation SC first issue you will find an Exclusive First Interview (p15) with our new RC, several Ship/chapter reports of activities helping others and in general the various crews hav-ing some great get togethers. Want to be on TV, then read about the big event (p23) this month here in R4 that is in need of R4 and Starfleet members for a Canadian TV show. ABC’s Wife Swap is still looking for a Star Trek family too. We have two reprint articles, the first is a piece about On-line gam-ing (p27), but it might be the second one that will get folks talking as it’s not only the article, but sev-eral accompanying graphics of a proposed new Animated Star Trek series (p26). As one member recently said, “this is not your Daddy’s Star Trek”. And so much more, I’m going to have to stop or you will not have anything to look forward to discovering.

This being the first issue of the new layout, expect some tweaking in coming issues as go through our shakedown cruise. I would like to add a Science or Medical column and a Cadet section. Are you good at cartoons and need a place to show off your work on regular basis? Then I have a place for you too. If you have an idea for columns or items you would like to see in future issue or would like to take on one of these items, let me know, I am not a Betazoid. I welcome comments from the membership/readers on your likes and dislikes for each issue. My one request is that if you make a criticism, please give me a suggestion as to a helpful change.

Okay, this next generation Subspace Communicator is ready to leave the retrofit yard. Time to take her out and see what she can do.

Live the adventure and have some FUN!!!

Hailing frequencies closed, FCPT Unicorn [email protected]

Submission Guidelines

{ Submissions must be in by midnight PST, the 20th of the even months (Feb., Apr., Jun., Aug., Oct., Dec.). Anything missing this deadline will be considered for future issues.

{ Please DO NOT embed articles or photos in your e-mail, but instead send them as separate attachment files. complain about how I crop them.). On occasion I need to crop photos due to size or space limitations. { Please inform me of the name, rank and position/title (if applicable) for each person in photos. You may know who they

are, but others do not, so lets tell them. If you would like a specific caption to appear with a photo, please include it. { Please run spell and grammar check before submitting.

Howdy, Starfleet members of Region 4! This is my first newsletter article as your new Regional Coordinator, and I'm very happy to be here. This chair is

slightly more comfortable than the VRC chair, and there are all sorts of new buttons and levers to figure out. I am grate-ful for the region's confidence in my ability to use these buttons and levers on their behalf.

I would also like to thank Ed Nowlin, the last guy who occupied this chair. Ed is a good friend and a great mentor, and I'm glad to keep him around. Perhaps he will be so kind as to tell me which of these knobs dispenses the Mountain Dew.

My first job was to find a Vice Regional Coordinator -- Who could I depend on to keep the maniacs away from me in the forthcoming and inevitable insurrection? More importantly, who could I trust to handle the blinking lights and tribble-dispensers on my old chair? I welcome Jennifer Cole of the USS Angeles. She's been in STARFLEET for a number of years, and brings shiploads of experience and new ideas for Region 4. By the way, Jennifer -- Mountain Dew is on the right hand side, second switch from the left.

I've been thinking about the Sector Chiefs Program for a little while -- We haven't had any sector chiefs, and I've been wondering if it made sense to continue the program. Jennifer and I had a meeting. Food and Romulan Ale were served. Next thing I knew, I woke up in a Skee-Ball Emporium in Reseda with a splitting headache. I found a note pinned to my forehead, and it contained minutes from our meeting. We're going to fill the Sector Chief positions, and keep the program alive.

Would you like to be a Sector Chief in Region 4? I can't make any promises as to the accolades and respect you'll gain in the position, but I will say this -- It does make a spiffy addition to your E-mail signature. If you're interested, send in a resume (both real and fleet-related), and a statement as to why you feel you're a great choice for the job to [email protected] by January 15th, 2007. Applications for these positions sent later than this date will be fed to my cat.

To the best of my knowledge, we have no Tholians serving in Region 4. This puts me in an odd position, because I need to find a new webmaster. Our regional website hasn't changed in about four years, and we could use a change. I've had several offers from people interested in maintaining the current site, but I'd really like to find a couple of folks to build and maintain a new regional website. Drop me a line!

I have an open door policy. The door is so open that you could probably push a truck through it. I'm not advising you to push a truck through my door, merely indicating that if you were so inclined, it could probably be done. I would not like to give the impression that the openness of my door is in any way a substitute for ample off-street parking, but the fact remains that my door is open, and very much so.

Feel free at any moment to contact me by E-mail, at [email protected]. For those of you who feel the need to show off their swanky new telephone they got for Christmas, I can be reached at 559-994-5511. A word of warning -- I work a swing shift from 2pm to 1am, and I may not be able to respond within the hours that most people are awake. If you leave me a message, I'll get back to you as soon as I can. For Region 4 folks that eschew both E-mail and teleph-ony, I'm available on IRC as 'Kryssi' between the hours of 7pm and 9pm on Sunday nights. If you don't know how to get on IRC, I'll be posting information on how to do that on the website soon.

While my door is truck-pushing open, I would like to visit you! Please let me know of anything special coming up on your chapter, and I do my best to make arrangements to at-tend. My entourage is vanishing small, and I do not insist upon an honor guard. I am also willing to sign autographs if pens are provided. I have several messages from Region 4 members inquir-ing about the Regional Conference. I'm going to look over the requirements, and you can expect to hear an announcement from this office sometime in January. It will be, as are most of

In addition to the myriad of duties I have on the chapter and regional level, I have recently been ap-pointed STARFLEET Chief of Operations by Fleet Admi-ral Les Rickard. Over the coming months, I will be intro-ducing many changes in Operations and FUN things for our chapters to participate in.

On the official front, here are the regional strength totals from the STARFLEET Database. I’ve added the Fleet Strength so that you can see the numbers there as well.

[Oh, my goodness, I can’t quite believe it’s 2007 already!] Anyway, as we be-gin the new year, I wanted to ask that everyone keep the comm lines open – please post your chapter’s activities to the R4 list. Let everyone know what cool and exciting ac-tivities your group is up too. Visiting a museum, park, Sa-cred Site of “Star Trek”, or bowling with your fellow Trek-kies?! Let us know!

Now I’d like to take a short detour and say a few words to our wonderful, yet now retired RCR4 – Ed Nowlin - A great big THANK YOU!!! Ed, you gave us so many awesome years as our RC. You brought this Region back from near death, and you did so with gusto! No matter how much Dinky took credit, you did all the work! Oh, yeah, you had some awesome officer’s to help you too, but, you did a great job and we all are very thankful for your hard work. I’m just sorry I couldn’t be there at the R4 Conference to shower you with beer! Light that hat on fire or scare Dinky! Thank you Ed, may you find peace and enjoyment in your retirement. Of course, I expect you won’t be sitting on your hands for too long!

To Chrissy Killian – our new Regional Coordinator – CONGRATS! I know you’ll do an equally awesome job as Ed has done. I am also very thankful that you asked me to be your ‘little mate’ and I pledge to do my best. I prom-ise to be a great representative of Region 4, my chapter, USS Angeles, and of STARFLEET International as well. I hope that all members of R4 will come to me with ques-tions or problems, and I pledge to all of you that I will do my utmost best to answer or solve any problems you may have. (Of course, I hope there won’t be any!

Recently, R4RC Killian posted to the R4 email list some job openings – R4 Webmaster, Sector Chiefs, etc. - please refer to those messages or look in the Subspace Communicator for a list of those job openings – please submit your resumes as soon as possible. We’d love to fill them all very soon!

Staff Openings RADM Chrissy Killian - RC

Now that I have had a chance to discuss staffing with my VRC, Jennifer Cole, it's time to fill in these positions.

Webmaster - I want to thank Robin Smith for her work as webmistress for the Region 4 website. With her busy life, she has decided to side down as webmistress.

That being said, Region 4 needs a new webmaster. All candidates should have some experience with web building. Please send a resume, both real life and fleet to [email protected] . Please include a list of any current website you maybe working on.

Sector Chiefs - Currently we have none. I have debated on whether to leave it at that or to fill in the positions. Right now I would like to fill them in, see how it works and then Jennifer and I will return to the issue in 6-8 months to see how the sector chiefs are doing. Requirements: Current or past CO or XO of a chapter. You will be required to contact all the chapters in your region at least once a quarter, prepare a report every quarter to be send to the VRC and provide a newsletter article at least twice a year.

So we are looking at 4 positions, North, South, East and Central. Please send a real life and fleet resume to [email protected].

If you're interested, send in a resume (both real and fleet-related), and a statement as to why you feel you're a great choice for the job to [email protected] by January 15th, 2007. Applications for these positions sent later than this date will be fed to my cat. Jennifer and I will look at all the re-sumes and announce our decision.

If you have any questions, please contact me at [email protected] or you can call me at 559-994-5511.

answer for several weeks, then postal is ok, I much prefer email or a phone call. I usually check my email at least once a day...usually allot more often. I will usually respond back within 24 hours. Currently I am using [email protected] for any email and my phone is 559-994-5511.

} The previous administration had Sector Chiefs, although most of those offices became vacant in the past year, without replacements. Do you plan to continue the SC's or do away with them?

I have thought about this and have discussed in with my VRC, Jennifer Cole. I am placing an announcement out for Sector Chiefs. Currently we have none.

} R4 is fairly large with approximately 20 current chapters, any plans to try to attend chapter meetings or events?

Absolutely! I want to visit every chapter if I get a chance, so please let me know if there is a special event going on in your area, I will try to make it.

} What other Regional Staff changes are you plan-ning or which staff are you planning to keep, if any?

Well....I hope you are staying. (ED: Thanks, I will.) The rest of the staff has already moved on. I spoke to Robin Smith, our Webmistress, last week. Her real life responsi-bilities are keeping her anyway from the computer, so we will have an opening for webmaster and as mentioned ear-lier, Sector Chiefs.

} The IC is taking place next Aug in Denver, al-though it's still early in your tenure, have you given an thought towards when the next R4 Con-ference might take place, or how soon you might

(Continued on page 30)

As you might have heard in November 2006, Re-gion 4 elected a new Regional Coordinator to Com-mand Starbase 4. In an exclusive first interview with the Subspace Communicator for the Regional mem-bership, I present you with questions submitted to RADM Chrissy Killian and her responses.

} Having been the previous Vice RC for the past several years, seeing both the good and bad of the past administration and the region what initial plans and/or desires do you have for your first term as R4RC?

I want to see more communication within the chapters and get back to the fun we use to have with everyone together. I know we always have a great time together and I want to see that more than once a year at Region 4 Conference. Several years ago, Ed did a CO Conference and I think that was a big hit. I may look at doing one of those this spring. I hope to help the region grow. I think we need to get back to our roots, our love of Sci Fi and of Star Trek in gen-eral. We need to bring Trek back into the Chapters. We need to get Fun back for those who have lost it!!!

} I'm aware that your 'real life' job requires hours different then the average R4 mem-ber, as such do you plan to establish hours for your RC office, or a schedule to help you stay on top of R4 items and avoid missing various deadlines?

My real life schedule is that I work swing shift. I usually leave my home about 2 pm and get home about 1 am. I usually up until 4 am or later getting all the stuff done that most folks do in their evenings. If I am home, I am on IRC and folks can find me there in the Region 4 room, #sfi-r4. I am planning on being there from 7 pm to 9 pm every Sunday as my R4 time each week so if you have irc, you are welcome to join me there. If you don't have IRC or know what's it about, you can go to www.fleetchat.org for more infor-mation. With Stype and Gizmo being free to use, I may look into online conferences with the COs. Re-gardless of anything else, I can be contacted by email or phone.

} What way(s) would be best for R4 members to contact you should they have a ques-tion? Do you prefer postal mail, phone, or internet?

Depends on the questions, if they don't need an

Departure… Over hill, over dale, we hit the dusty trail. And dusty

it was, since we decided to travel over the Continental Divide through Wyoming on our way from Denver to Salt Lake City to attend this year’s Mountain Con hosted Captain Carl Stark of the USS Ticonderoga and members of Utah’s 7th Fleet Star Trek Family. Stay Frosty…

The trip through Wyoming was smooth, uneventful and C O L D. We chose that route due to a snow advisory in the mountains of Colorado and thought that we’d just tool over the divide and make our descent through the Wa-satch Mountains. It decided to snow on us halfway through so we made a pit stop at Stiff Nipple, Wyoming (home of the World’s Windiest Rest Area) to gather our strength for the final leg of the trip out. The Convention…

Saturday saw the bulk of con activities such as the 7th Fleet’s USS Kelly celebrating their 20th Anniversary (Congrats, gang!) and a really nice informal panel of all the clubs in attendance where members were able to give a brief rundown of their group and answer some questions for the crowd. All of us were thrown in the brig for a short period on what seemed to be trumped up charges of sobriety which we quickly remedied (see below). Rumors of my being a Cylon are greatly exagger-ated…

Richard Hatch provided an insightful talk with the crowd about the upcoming season three of the new Bat-tlestar Galactica. He artfully dodged spoilers and played a blooper reel from BSG that had us in stitches. He answered a lot of questions from the crowd and en-couraged interaction from the fans. He talked about what a great subplot it would be to bring Dirk Benedict on as Starbuck’s father and the crowd seemed really happy with that idea. When cornered and asked flat out if he was a Cylon… he simply said “I don’t know yet.” I say we waste him. No offense. Better to be safe than for Richard Hatch to be voted off the Galactica. No, I’m just kidding. Really. No, wait… Smuggler’s Blues …

All of the Saturday night room parties were as-signed to the same area of the hotel. This was awe-some because we didn’t have to stagger (roll, crawl, roll, roll, stagger, stagger) so far to get around to hit them all. Other cons should copy this tactic. While we

didn’t plan on actually hosting a room party, we quickly learned that we were about the only ship to bring a bar with us (as usual). So we hastily went to the liquor store and

augmented our existing stock as we pre-pared to receive boarders. Chapters of Utah’s 7th Fleet, the 501st Alpine Garrison and the Klingons hosted parties with MOJO snacks that were better than some of the restaurants around the hotel. We even got to hang out with David and Debby Horst as well as Audi Jack from the USS Pioneer and Kathryn Johnson and Brooks Williamson from the USS Moontype. As is the norm at our parties… we signed up another member on the spot. Welcome, VIXEN! Costumes… We took our BSG Costumes to wear on Sat-urday. I had my classic Colonial Warrior as well as my award winning new series Duty Uniform that my wife made for me. We had three more in uniform and we looked pretty cool fitting in with the other costumes there.

We saw a Ghostbuster, a Predator and a Borg. A Boba Fett walked with the usual Stormtroopers. We marveled at the DeLorean Time Machine from Back to the Future and the “Ariel Ambulance” from Firefly.

As some of our newer crewmembers may not know, several years ago under the administration of our first female Captain, Elaine Weathers-Wilyard, we insti-tuted the event of the Annual Cookie Run. This was de-signed to show to the Firemen and the Police Officers how much we appreciated their tremendous hard and dangerous work on our behalf throughout the year. We felt that a simple tray of homemade goodies from the members would help demonstrate our goodwill.

At first we alternated the Thanksgiving and Christmas delivery between the two departments, but then settled on Thanksgiving for the Fireman, and Christ-mas for the Police. This was done to ease the amount of baking we needed to do for the Christmas Run. We’re thankful, not necessarily energetic.

Our first run was the 1993 holiday season. We have continued this tradition ever since. It is, indeed, labor and time intensive but validation comes when, dur-ing a delivery, someone says, “We were hoping it was you”, as was remarked to us by Chief Conway at the Chico Airport Fire Station No. 3 this past November.

The Captain called on our members to submit their favorite recipes to him, and a final decision was made as to what recipes would be made.

The Captain and Records Officer John Long with help from the Security Chief Vicki Smith traveled to their favorite Ferengi Food Outlet and purchased supplies for the Cookie Run. With supplies in hand we rendezvoused with members of the crew on Nov. 21st at the Casa De Flores Community Room to prepare our goods.

The CO had the foresight to request all crew-

members prepare their dough beforehand, so as to make best use of the time we had at the community room. Once we were inside, the oven was prepared and then we be-gan baking cookies, replacing each finished cookie sheet with two new ones every ten to twelve minutes, or until crisp around the edges.

We have 9 stations in the Chico area. Six stations are Chico Fire Departments and three are Butte County Fire Stations in the Chico Urban area. So we needed a lot of cookies for the many hungry fireman at all those sta-tions.

By the end of the day we had prepared 33 dozen cookies for our run. But not all was done. The next day The Captain and Security Chief met at the domicile of the XO and there we finished another 15 dozen cookies for a grand total of 48 dozen! Of course, some of them never made it past the cooling racks. After all, we needed to make sure our products were worthy of distribution!

We finished baking within 2 hours and then pre-pared the trays. We started placing cookies in the trays and working our way to filling them all. Then we wrapped them in colored cling wrap, placed a few bows on top and rested from our labors.

The next morning, I, along with Security Chief Vicki, picked the trays up from the XO’s house and began to deliver our Thanksgiving gifts. (I think Vicki came along to make sure I didn’t eat all of them). The deliveries were made in due course and many of the firemen remembered us from previous years and thanked us profusely for our gifts. I look forward to making the Christmas deliveries to the Police later this month.

Security Chief Vicki Smith stands watch over the Cookie Trays making sure the Captain doesn't eat any more than he already has.

USS Angeles members assembling care packages for shipping L-R: Jackie Bundy , Max Cervantes, Susan Fox and Gloria Rodriguez

For men and women serving overseas in combat areas there is little enough to look forward to. When you are separated from family and friends nothing brightens your day like a little contact from home.

For the past several years the crew of the U.S.S. Angeles has celebrated the holidays by assembling and mailing packages to men and women serving overseas with the US military. It is a small way to let them know that they are in our thoughts and prayers.

Each year the crew gets together shortly before Thanksgiving to pack and label as many packages as we can which are filled with both necessities and holiday goodies. These packages are sent to soldiers we “adopt” through a variety of sources including the AnySoldier.com. This year 22 packages were assembled for mailing to soldiers, marines and air-men serving in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan.

Mail, particularly letters and cards are welcome year round, by the troops and go a long way toward keeping morale high so the next time your crew gets together consider taking a few minutes for everyone to write a letter or even just a few words of encouragement on a post card. All it takes is a first class postage stamp.

Admiral’s Log: STARDATE 10610.31 On October 31st, 1998, the USS Stormbringer was commis-

sioned into STARFLEET as a Correspondence Chapter of the Line. October 31st, 2006 marked eight years of “Partying the Final Frontier” ™ and we held up to our unofficial motto with the usual craziness that you have come to expect from the cast and crew.

Eight years marked many changes in our chapter and the way we do business. For one, we have started having a series of face to face get togethers, the largest being at StarFest in Den-ver, Colorado which occurs the 3rd weekend of April each year. For the last 5 years members of the Stormbringer and friends have traveled from all across the USA and Canada to come play Star Trek with us. These gatherings started rather informally and as time went by and our reputation grew, we now bill this as our Annual Ship Meeting and Party Weekend. We have expanded this schedule to now include quarterly gatherings of the crew; one each in the spring, summer, winter and autumn.

The Autumn one centers around our anniversary as a chap-ter and this year we had a convention, MileHi Con, fall on the same weekend as our party, so in true Stormbringer fashion, we decided to take the party on the road… The Good…

The Stormbringer helped the Klingon House Vampyr host their annual party at the convention and we were welcomed with open arms and full goblets of bloodwine. Our new costuming guild “Clan Stormbringer” made an appearance with four mem-bers donning leather “Techno-Armor” complete with special effects and “Blacklightsabers” that were painstakingly upgraded by our electronics guru, Nathan Tierney. Nathan replaced all the LEDs in the Master Replicas Lightsabers with high intensity UV LEDs. Great for parties, raves and even scorpion detection! The Bad …

At midnight, we toasted the Stormbringer’s anniversary and the third anniversary of Gumby and Frances Simmons, who were married on the anniversary of the ship in 2003. Toasts and toasts and more toasts… please pass the jelly (shots)! The Ugly…

During the course of the evening, over 100 folks subjected themselves to the madness that is Stormbringer – and at the end of the night we even inducted three new members into the ranks of the chapter and STARFLEET. While some chapters staff ta-bles for recruiting at conventions, we throw parties. We have found this to be our little niche in fandom. We have found that potential members are easier to recruit when you show them your chapter in action… plus feeding them a few drinks also

helps! I tell ya, this IS the way to recruit new members! J Costumes…

In addition to the armor for Clan Stormbringer, we ducked out halfway through the party to make a costume change. This time it was for another element of our club… the Battlestar Stormbringer. For those of you wondering, the Stormbringer has many aspects and outlets for our members to enjoy:

The USS Stormbringer (STARFLEET) The Battlestar Stormbringer (Colonial Defense Forces) The ISD Stormbringer (501st and Imperial Forces Star

Destroyer) The IKV Stormbringer (Friends of the Klin), BarGate SG-69 (SGC Chapter Affiliation) Clan Stormbringer (Medieval TechnoKnights for Ren

Faires, SCA and Camarilla) One name, many options… IDIC at its finest.

Night of the Living Red Shirts… We announced that Stormbringer Films will be doing a

Star Trek/Zombie Parody Short! We’re in the process of pro-ducing Red Shirt Diaries and will utilize costumes, set pieces and props from that for this light zany spoof of Romero’s clas-sic. Look for it soon! Photos and Evidence…

There are photos online from the weekend at www.bsg69.com. Nobody was injured this time and no cops came to shut us down even though there were rumors of such. All warrants and legal wranglings should be directed to our legal department at [email protected] The Day After…

A much deserved rest for our Colorado Crew who hosted yet another blowout party. We chilled around the StormCellar and watched movies on the projector and plotted our battle strategy for the upcoming New Years Eve party, StarFest 2007 and of course, Dragon*Con 2007! In the Future…

Stormbringer will be hosting even more events over the next year such as the StarFest 2007 in Denver, the Annual Summer Bash at the end of July, a BIG party at IC07 many, many more.

Stay tuned for more information and don’t touch that dial! We’d love to have you come to Denver and attend. Many

have… so should you! Contact me at [email protected] for details and arrangements.

Until then… Partying the Final Frontier.

The name “Northern Lights” exists in many forms, from the unique light phenomenon known as Aurora Borealis, to several honored sea vessels. The SS Northern Lights is a Ponce Class steamship chartered by Military Sealift Com-mand to aid in Operation Enduring Freedom. Military cargo was loaded in San Diego and delivered to Southwest Asia. During the charter period, the SS Northern Lights made 25 voyages and 49 port calls, and carried 12,200 pieces of military gear.

The USS Northern Lights also exists in more than one form. It is a Sovereign Class vessel (NCC-27001) serving Starfleet, captained by FCAPT Tracy Newby. Since 1992, the Northern Lights has been a Region 4 Silicon Valley Star Trek fan club, and it continues to be group of friends who enjoy “meeting and eating” at least once per month, watch-ing and discussing a variety of science fiction and fact, and performing charitable work such as kitten rescue and col-lecting donations to help the 9/11 search dogs.

To celebrate the holidays, the Northern Lights crew

gathered for gazing at the massive home theater screen, provided by LTCMDR Guy and CAPT Kathy Hoover at the affectionately-dubbed “Hooverarium”, and for the tra-ditional holiday potluck, provided by everyone. LT(JG) Brad “Shmoo” Adamson (who also snapped the accom-panying photos) made his famous and well-loved “Shmoo Taters”, of which even this lactose-intolerant officer par-took. It is worth the suffering every time. Guy was the glorious bartender and the resultant conversations were quite lively. The ‘Lights had visitors from fellow ships the USS Eagle and USS Augusta Ada. Hails were received from the USS Decatur, the USS Tikopai, and the Black Fleet: Star Pirates Guild, who could not attend but would be sending out invites to their respective upcoming gath-erings.

Donations to Toys for Tots and the Heart of the City Charities Campaign were made by the USS Northern Lights, in recognition of the name and its generous his-tory. The crew is always welcoming new members—“the more, the merrier” is a true statement, especially when it comes to watching Dr. Who, Torchwood, and Battlestar Galactica, plus indulging in the infamous and epic Munchkin battles. Several members are stargazers in their own right, and they intend to ogle celestial delights this season. A Holiday Gathering By: LCDR Jackie Bundy - USS Angeles

One of the highlights of the annual calendar for the U.S.S. Angeles is our holiday get together and this year was no excep-tion. The agenda—Fun, Food and Fellowship!

Our family hosted the event this year and my husband Sam, sons Adam and Andrew and I really threw ourselves into decorat-ing the house both inside and out to be as festive as possible. Garlands adorned the railings and the tree sparkled while outside a lollypop and candy cane themed light display meant there was no problem finding the right house.

Despite the wind and rain, which made for horrible driving conditions, quite a few folks made the trek out to Calabasas for the party, which started out with a massive pot luck dinner. Max Cervantes and Darrell Leach brought a DVD of the White House Christmas decorations that we played in the background as every-one enjoyed all the good things to eat.

Others in attendance included our CO Janice Willcocks, our XO Jennifer Cole, Security Chief Gloria Rodriguez, CMO Goldie Frankel, Dave Mason, Boyd Harmon, Max and Darrell, Jackie, Andrew, Adam and Mel Bundy. Crewmember Virginia (T’Vin) Wilson brought her friends Chris and Louis and all three had

Jackie reading the TNG version of the 'Twas the Night Before Christmas’ with Goldie Frankel

dressed for the occasion in their trek personas. Jonathan Fo-ertsch called in from Phoenix and Unicorn surprised us with an everybody have fun call as well.

Goldie Frankel organized some games and after everyone had enough to eat we gathered around the tree to play Star Trek Family Feud for which we divided into three teams, the Alpha Quadrant, the Beta Quadrant and the Delta Quadrant. The Alpha Quadrant team of Janice Willcocks, Dave Mason, T’Vin, Adam and Jackie narrowly pulled off the win.

Dave Mason brought his keyboard and kindly played Christmas carols for our sing-along, Jackie did a read-a-loud of a TNG version of The Night Before Christmas and a Goldie inspired version of the Weakest Link—Star Trek style—put everyone in the right mood for the gift exchange and as names were drawn the crew took turns choosing a gift from under the tree.

While this years gathering was a bit smaller than in years past it was a wonderful evening and a good time was had by all.

Here we have the Constellation Orion. It should be noted to Star Trek fans in general, and Klingon fans in particular, that Orion's Belt when combined with neighboring stars forms the outline of a Klingon D7 Battlecruiser quite distinctly. I noticed this in 1996 after watching several Star Trek shows back to back and then later doing some star gazing out in the countryside. It was a really clear night and the image was quite vivid.

Orion's Belt forms the right nacelle and the stars are named from the front to back as follows; Alnitak, Alnilam, and Mintaka. The star Rigel illuminates the front of the left nacelle while the star Saiph serves as the bridge. There are sev-eral other stars such as Theta-1 and the Orion Nebula which make up the front where the command boom attaches to the main superstructure. In reality, it is Orion's Belt and sword.

This is Kahless's Battle Cruiser in the sky. On patrol for all eternity! QAPLA and HAPPY 40th Anniversary Star Trek! Hech baH aka Dynamoe

overnight isn't cheap. But if you leave early enough on Sunday morning, some of you could probably drive here, partici-pate for a couple of hours, and then be home before supper, paying only for gas. Also, if anyone did want to stay over in L.A. that evening, the following day is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, which is a holiday for many companies.

The story editor at Peace Point told me that when they recently aired their "Batman" episode nationally across Can-ada, visits to their website increased by 5000% for the next week! Most of the hits were directed at links that Peace Point provided to Batman fan clubs.

While the episodes won't be airing in the U.S., there are Starfleet chapters in Canada...so putting in a good showing would help our parent organization.

Plans are still not quite finalized, but the date of Sunday, January 14th has now been locked in for the Toronto film crew to fly out to L.A. and do their loca-tion shooting. Any and all members of any Starfleet chapter are welcome to, invited to, encouraged to, and asked sin-cerely and humbly to join the USS Ange-les and be a part of this one-time event. It's a chance to demonstrate that Star Trek fandom is alive and well...and for Starfleet members to be temporarily fa-mous from coast to coast (in Canada).

If you can make it on January 14th, please e-mail me at [email protected] and let me know as soon as you can. I'll then keep you posted on the final sched-ule and shooting location.

I sincerely appreciate anyone who can give some time to this event. Thanks so much.

Are You Ready For Your 15 Seconds Of Fame?

By: COMM Jon Lane - USS Angeles

There is a large production studio based in Toronto, Canada, that is in the process of putting together a 20-part television documen-tary series on...television. Each episode is featuring the fans of a different classic televi-sion series--"Bonanza", "Batman", "Little House on the Praire", "The Brady Bunch"...and of course, "Star Trek." (Yeah, we kinda wrote the book on fan loyalty, didn't we?)

This studio, called Peace Point Entertain-ment Group, already filmed and aired six epi-sodes, including one on fans of the original "Star Trek" series. They are now in produc-tion on an upcoming episode focusing on "Star Trek: The Next Generation"...and they need fans to interview. That's where you folks come in.

I've been helping these Canadian TV pro-ducers set up a weekend of filming here in L.A., trying to work out the logistics of some location shooting at sacred sites of Star Trek. It looks like we will be filming at Vasquez Rocks State Park, where Kirk fought the Gorn and where Picard, Riker, and Troi encoun-tered a proto-Vulcan primitive culture in the episode “Who Watches the Watchers?” (as well as many, many other episodes of all the Trek series). Vasquez Rocks is about an hour north of L.A., and their shoot is scheduled for Sunday, January 14th.

The nice ’Canadians’ would like to get as many local Star Trek fans from the USS Ange-les and Starfleet to show up there as possible, to film the club doing what we do in the "backyard" of Star Trek and talking about the organization. It will likely be about 2 hours, probably from the late morning till the early afternoon. TNG-era uniforms would be en-couraged but are not mandatory.

I realize that most R4 chapters are not exactly next door to L.A., and staying here

“Thank You.” One of the simplest phrases the English language

has to offer, it’s deceptively ordinary. But it’s meaning far surpasses the two words that comprise the phrase itself. It can mean, among other things: gratefulness for a job well done, or appreciation for a long friendship, or thank-fulness for an act of kindness.

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, it’s also one of the least-used phrases when it comes to folks doing the day-to-day, the thankless jobs, and the specialist work like websites, logistics, and club management at varying levels. These jobs, while vitally important, are often left without the group actively acknowledging the hard work put in by the member who took the time to ensure they were done.

I’m sure we all are indeed grateful for these efforts made by our hard-working crewmates and fellow Region 4 members; in fact, I’ve never heard a single instance where someone’s actually become angry over hard work being done to benefit them.

Based on this premise, I’ve been germinating upon an idea, one that’s been upon my heart, and nagging at the back of my brain over the past few months. I’ve com-mitted to 2007 being my personal “Year of ‘Thank You’”, and I was hoping that I might get our Region excited

about this enough to give it a try themselves. What I mean by this is that I have decided that I will do

my best to go out of my way to ensure that the hard work-ers around me are aware that someone notices their work, and appreciates them, and wants them to know that their efforts are worth the time and energy spent to do them.

I invite you all to join me by telling me about your chapter’s hard-workers. Be they the Webmaster, the com-munications chief, the CO, or the chief cook and bottle washer of your chapter, it matters not. Let’s hear some stories about how your fellow Fleeters are kicking butt and doing what they do – not because they have to, but be-cause they want to help.

With Unicorn’s blessing, I hope to have a column in each release of the newsletter during 2007, outlining the thank you’s I hear from the rest of the Region.

Now mind you, this is totally unofficial, and COM-PLETELY voluntary. But I think it would be, as the kids say these days, “wicked-cool” if we could give it the ol’ college try.

Whaddya say? If you’re in, feel free to send an email to [email protected] with your story of grateful-ness for your fellow SFI’rs contributions. I look forward to reading your stories!

Let the backstabbing, power grabs and chaos begin—the Mirror Universe is coming back!

Pocket Books will be taking fans back to the Mirror Universe in 2007 with a set of six novels. Set to be re-leased in February and March, Mirror Universe Volume 1 and 2 will each be trade paperbacks that contain three dis-tinct books from various authors. Each of the five televi-sion series will be represented, as well as the very popular prose series New Frontier.

The three television series that had Mirror Universe episodes will all get follow-ups in these books. The Enter-prise story will be coauthored by Mike Sussman (who co-

wrote "In a Mirror, Darkly"), Dayton Ward & Kevin Dil-more, and will pick up where those episodes left off, showing the rise to power of Empress Hoshi Sato.

David Mack’s story will pick up shortly after "Mirror, Mirror," and show how Spock tried to put the mainline universe's Kirk's advice to good use, and how the his-tory, as described by Kira in "Crossover" played out (be warned, though, that Kira's summation is not the whole story, and you only think you know how it ends).

Newcomer Sarah Shaw will bridge the gap between "The Emperor's New Cloak" and the appearances of the Mirror Universe in the recent DS9 post-finale novel War-path.

The other three books will be 24th-century tales that extrapolate from what we saw, primarily on Deep Space Nine. Greg Cox's TNG story will be Picard-heavy. In a world without Starfleet, it is the archeologist side of Picard that becomes dominant. Peter David's New Fron-tier tale will show us a Calhoun who also never had the civilizing influence of Starfleet.

Keith DeCandido’s contribution is the Voyager book which will feature counterparts to all of the opening-credits regulars on, as well as those of several recurring characters. The theme will still be people trapped 70,000 light-years from home, but it will mostly take place in the Alpha Quadrant.

Mirror Universe Volume 1: Glass Empires (Feb.) will feature the Enterprise, TOS and TNG stories. Mirror Universe Volume 2: Obsidian Alliances (March) will fea-ture the New Frontier, Voyager and Deep Space Nine

Star Trek may be set for a comeback into yet an-other arena, this time in the 2nd dimension. Trek-Movie.com has learned that there is a new animated Trek project under consideration at CBS, but it has yet to get the green light. The series would most likely be broadcast on the web and be made up of ‘Clone Wars’ like 6-minute mini episodes. The yet-to-be-named pro-ject was originally pitched by long-time Trek producer David Rossi (well known to TrekMovie.com readers as a producer on Trek Remastered) along with his pro-ducer/writer partners Doug Mirabello and José Muñoz. Rossi sat down with TrekMovie.com for an exclusive look at how he and his partners hope to create a dif-ferent kind of Trek set in the 26th century.

The idea for a new animated Trek started back around the time that Star Trek Enterprise was can-celled. Rossi and his partners didn’t buy into the no-tion that Star Trek ‘needed a rest’. "We wanted to spark a little life into Star Trek and to keep it alive in people’s eyes," explains Rossi. They knew CBS and Paramount weren’t going to be keen on a new (and very expensive) live action show so they decided that animation was the way to go. Their first notion was to do a show set in the Original Series era (but not on the Enterprise), however that notion didn’t sit well with the people at CBS. Rossi then took the advice he got from LeVar Burton on how ‘Star Trek should always be about moving forward and what is next in the hu-man adventure.’ So the team came up with the notion of taking a big leap forward and setting a show 150 years after the time of Picard and Star Trek Nemesis, but in a very different and somewhat dark Trek uni-verse. CBS were more open to that idea and over the last year and a half have asked the team (now formed into Zero Room Productions) to flesh out their idea. Although CBS have not committed to the series, they have asked the team to develop test artwork and scripts for 5 mini episodes. Trek’s darker future…with a spark of hope

The Zero Room team felt that the time was right for a new approach to Trek. The setting is the year 2528 and the Federation is a different place after suf-fering through a devastating war with the Romulans 60 years earlier. The war was sparked off after a sur-prise attack of dozens of ‘Omega particle’ detonations throughout the Federation creating vast areas which become impassible to warp travel and essentially cut off almost half the Federation from the rest. During the war the Klingon homeworld was occupied by the Rom-

ulans, all of An-doria was de-stroyed and the Vulcans, who were negotiating reunification with the Romulans, pulled out of the Federation. The setting may seem bleak and not very Trek-like, but that is where the show’s hero Captain Alexander Chase comes in. Relegated to border patrol, Chase is determined to bring the Federation (and a ship called Enterprise) back to the glory days of seeking out new life and new civilizations.

The parallels with the real world are obvious. The view is that to be relevant Trek cannot skirt around issues. Rossi explains: "couching big social issues in allegories so they are more palatable is kind of passé now. Today shows deal with these issues head on, so we decided to make the en-tire show an allegory. The premise is an allegory for the post-9/11 world we live in. A world of uncertainty and fear." In addition to the attempt at relevance, the Zero Room team want to incorporate other modern techniques. The show will have an overall ‘arc’ related to the mystery of who perpetu-ated that ‘Omega’ attack which sparked the Romulan War (turns out it wasn’t the Romulans…ooops). As one might imagine, all of the above back-story is quite a lot to get across in animated mini episodes, but that is where the web comes in. On StarTrek.com there will be a special sub-site for the show with crew logs and detailed histories of the Fed-eration to get viewers up to speed on what has been going on since Picard’s day. The team also want to tackle the is-sue of how Trek does not usually lend itself to the action-oriented world of animated shows like Star Wars: Clone Wars. "We won’t have long diatribes, we are utilizing a clipped kind of writing and the editing is frenetic," explains Rossi. The overall approach is hoped to make the show have a wider appeal than Trek’s last foray into the world of animation.

A conflicted ship and crew This new animated series would take place again on a ship called Enterprise, but the old girl has seen better days. Captain Chase’s Enter-prise will be a ‘Bismarck Class’ heavy cruiser from the Romulan war and a bit out of date. Her mission will be merely patrolling the border, but Chase chose the Enterprise for a

What is Star Trek Online? Star Trek Online is a massively multiplayer online role-

playing game (MMORPG) set in the Star Trek Universe, where thousands of players will have the opportunity to adventure to-gether in a huge, online persistent game world. When will the game be released?

The game is currently scheduled to be released sometime in eary 2008. In a recent interview, executive producer, Daron Stinnett mentioned that they were planning to launch the game about a year after the official Star Trek Online teaser website goes live. Will there be a public beta?

Yes. The date for this will be announced closer to game’s release date. Normally beta tests are only a few months away from launch. Jan-Mar 07 would be a good estimate. Where can I sign up for the beta?

Check out the official Star trek Online site for beta info when it’s launched. Will there be international versions of STO?

Yes. Star Trek has a huge number fans worldwide. The game will be released in several different languages. On which platforms will Star Trek Online be available?

PC only. The interface of most MMORPGs does not suit the control system of games consoles.

The following transcript is from an interview given to MMORPG.com by Daron Stinnett in their weekly on podcast, released 24th November 2006. Dana Massey: Hello, and welcome to the “Game On” interview.

This week we’re joined by Perpetual Entertainment’s Daron Stinnett. He’s the executive producer of Star Trek Online. Welcome to the show.

Daron Stinnett: Thanks Dana, and thanks for having me on the show.

DM: It’s good to have you. Let’s start off with the basic question: how are things been coming so far?

DS: Great. The team’s been making a ton of progress lately; we’re getting a lot of images up on the screen and getting worlds to fly around in and walk around in, getting our characters up and running around. Probably most importantly, we’re spend-ing a lot of time right now working on our combat, getting that tuned, and just going through a lot of iteration on that, trying to make it as fun an experience as we can make it as early as possible in development so that we can continue to

Article reprinted with permission from Kyle Patullo, Admin - STOGalaxy.com

refine it up until the time we launch. DM: When you say “combat”, you’re referring to space com-

bat, correct? DS: Well, both space and ground combat, but our focus is on

space combat right now, because we see that as the most risky or sort of…place where we need to innovate most for the genre because there’s obviously a ton of example out there of ground-based combat, and even a few exam-ple of good ranged combat that you’d expect from a Star Trek series. And so, there’s a lot for us to pull from there, but in space there aren’t a lot of examples. There’s EVE Online, there’s Earth and Beyond, I’m missing something there, but there’s not a whole lot of great examples of space combat – at least in our opinion – and so we feel like there’s a lot of innovation we need to do in order to make it pay off as a great space-based MMO experience.

DM: When you talk about space combat, you mentioned it’s the area where you have the least examples and where you need to be the most innovative. Can you give us some examples of innovations you might be trying?

DS: I don’t want to talk about any specifics right now, in terms of actual game features. But, it’s…you know, the whole idea of exploring a space environment and encoun-tering other enemies is something that’s been done in quite a bit in, say, RTS-style space games, or in space simulation –type games, or in some other types of games, a lot of flight action games, and I’ve done a lot of flight-action space games, but it hasn’t been done a whole lot as an RPG, and that, you know…fundamentally RPGs are about building up a character.

In Star Trek, you have your player character, the ground char-acter that you play that you level up and equip, but you also have as ship, and we think of that ship like a mount is to other games, and you need to be able to equip that ship and level it up, and get new ships as you go along the way. And so, making all that work in an RPG environ-ment, and making that a lot of fun for the average player, and not so difficult that only the most hardcore players can get into it is really a big challenge for us, but one that we’ve been succeeding at, I think. Everybody’s…you can tell by the way the team is having a good time playing what we’ve put together so far.

DM: Your main competitor in terms of the space end is, obvi-ously, EVE, and when I was over in Iceland a couple of weeks ago talking to them, they were really talking about slowing their combat down, making it more tactical, mak-ing it slower. How do you see pacing of space combat as compared to regular ground combat?

DS: We think, in general, that the market in ground combat (Continued on page 33)

Nichols Reflects on Great Bird and 'Gods'

Nichelle Nichols is happy to be returning to the role of Uhura in the fan-produced Star Trek: Of Gods And Men, though she says she can't guess exactly what Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry would say about the series.

"He was a very particular man, and very particular about the image of Star Trek and how it would have been portrayed," Nichols told Starburst (via Sci Fi Pulse). She does believe that however he felt about the charac-ter development, however, he would have enjoyed the fact that fans continued to produce Star Trek after the studio cancelled the most recent professional spinoff.

"I think he is sitting [up] there laughing his head off going, 'Right on, kids, right on', that writers and produc-ers and people who loved it are carrying on in the tradi-tion that he created the original," added Nichols, who was pleased to learn that in Of Gods and Men, Uhura has become a central character. "I liked the script and what [producer Sky Conway] was doing," she noted, ex-plaining that she has worked with Conway on events he has put together for Star Trek fans.

"Uhura being married to a Vulcan and she is living on that planet," the actress revealed. "She has long re-tired, but not really." Though Uhura is working with Spock, neither he nor the Federation are as fans have come to expect, and Uhura is the only person who seems aware that something is amiss. "We are battling the Federation that has gone bad...we're the tough guys now, we're the rulers of the universe."

"As things unfold, she is the one who pulls things together," continued Nichols. "When she comes upon Chekov...she knows that she knows him, but he says that he’s somebody else. It was a challenge of great pro-portions, and it could be confusing if you don’t under-stand what happened to cause all this."

G4 Will Give 'Next Gen' the 2.0 Treatment

“I'm not dead yet!” says Bjo Trimble There is a rumor going around science fic-

In truth, aside from fibromyalgia and arthritis, both of which hurt but won't kill me, I am doing pretty well for 73 years old. I have a challenging job teaching devel-opmentally disabled adults how to sew and make crafts. I am planning on a weaving and dyeing trip to the Mayan Highlands in March 2007. My goal for my 75 th birthday is an archaeological dig in Denmark. Please tell anyone who has heard the rumor that I'm OK. Thanks.

Company Behind Trek MMORPG In Trouble? [Update: Perpetual President Responds] December 14, 2006

Perpetual Entertainment, the company developing Trek’s MMORPG Star Trek Online, appears to be having some financial problems. Gaming site Gamasutra is report-ing that the company has fired 35 employees including at least 8 who were working on Star Trek Online. The prob-lems seem to be stemming from delays related to their pre-miere game Gods and Heroes: Rome Rising. Perpetual is just 2 years old and has yet to release any games. It would be a shame to see their problems result in more de-lays or even the shelving of the exciting new Trek MMORPG.

UPDATE: Perpetual Founder/President Spins the lay-offs. The following has been posted on the official Perpet-ual forums.

As some of you may have heard we have made some staffing changes at Perpetual. We are proud to announce that we are within a month of being content complete on Gods & Heroes: Rome Rising , our upcoming AAA MMO title. As we achieve this major development milestone, a number of content production roles come to an end. The Gods & Heroes team remains over 80 talented people strong as we enter the final phase prior to launch — play-testing and tuning to deliver the highest quality game pos-sible. In addition, because we value the feedback our beta testers have been giving us, and because we want to ship the highest quality game possible, we have moved our tar-get ship date from the spring to the summer of 2007. This extension of the testing and tuning phase of the project will allow us to focus entirely on making a great game – which is our #1 goal.

Perpetual remains 100% committed to shipping a fan-tastic Gods & Heroes game and to continuing development of the much-anticipated Star Trek Online .

The only scene in the entire season that wasn't shot on digital video was the teaser of "In a Mirror, Darkly", which was shot on 35mm film to better intercut with stock footage from the 1996 movie Star Trek: First Contact.

wish to seek bids from Chapters who are in-terested in hosting the event?

I will put out a formal announcement right after the first of the year.

} Any preferences as to the Conference being moved up before the IC or should it continue to be held after the IC?

I like it in Sept or Oct. I know that there were some issues with the dates for the last Region 4 Conference and will look at ways to limit them. I will welcome all in-formation about events in Sept & October that we will try to avoid. This includes annual chapter functions and reli-gious holidays too. We may not be able to avoid conflicts but I will see what can be done.

} What would you like to the members of R4 to know about you in your 'real world life' vs. 'fan world life', that they might not already ?

drive a car. I grew up in the countryside of Central Cali-fornia. In high school I was a member of the FFA, Math Club and the Computer Club. I was a little strange in high school. :)

My friends, Mark Andrews and his wife Mary, and myself attended the opening on Star Trek: The Exper-ence in Jan of 1998. I have a picture with Jeri Ryan, very sweet lady and Jonathan Frakes, caught him at the blackjack tables.

Opening Night at the experience (12:01) we were one of the first groups to go in. We spend our time enjoy-ing the History of the Future and the props. When we got almost to the ride entrance we saw Chase Masterson (Leeta, the Dabo girl from DS9) and her date. She was dressed for a grand opening, beautiful blue strapless gown and a white stole. Mark & I asked her for a picture and she was very happy to do it. Mark & I stood on either side of Chase.

With her heels, she was close to 6' tall and Mark is 6'2" and I stand at 5'2". Mark's wife, Mary was talking the picture and ask if I could stand taller to get in the pic-ture. About the same time, Chase turned to look at me. I got hit in the face with what Quark referred to as Leeta's Brains. (and her "brains" were almost spilling out of the dress to begin with)

We continue on the ride and I told my companions what happened. We had a good laugh. The Experience was fun that night. We even had our picture (with a group of others waiting in line with us) in the magazine, Entertainment Weekly.

This is something I'm sure allot of folks wished they could say, they got hit in the face with Leeta's 'brains',

my messages, suitable for framing. Finally, a short reminder. Forty years ago in this re-

gion, a production team from Desilu came together and created a television program called 'Star Trek.' Every single episode of this show was filmed in this region, and since then it's been broadcast around the world in several languages. It never won an Emmy, but I'm sure you've heard of it. People in this region can do anything. :)

I'm always looking for more ideas to bring our chap-ters together and have fun, and if you've got any, I want to hear about them. That's it for me -- You'll be hearing more from me as time crunches forward, and you'll see another report like this in about sixty days. Happy Holi-days!!!

She’s a CYLON!!! We had a costume re-view on Saturday night in the main ballroom. I was in my award win-ning new BSG costume and was last in line be-hind a nicely costumed cybernetic pixie. We plotted our drama mo-ment for the crowds while we were in line. As I followed her in the precession, I walked up the stairs and gave the Emcee, Rex Rouviere from I-SCI-FI.com, a

hug and whispered into his ear “Grab the gun.” His puz-zled look was quickly replaced by lightning fast reflexes as I drew my sidearm and yelled out “She’s a CYLON!” while trying to take aim on the fair lass. She played right along. Rex played right along and the crowd loved the mini drama moment. Later, Rex commented to me on the moment and how he enjoyed the fun it added. It, like the rest of Mountain Con… was a total blast! Red Alert… Red Shirts!

Once again, comic relief services were provided courtesy of the Starfleet Stormbringer Security Services (SSSS). The infamous “Red Shirts” were well received by the conventioneers and we handed out movie poster cards to promote the upcoming fanfilm. We got a picture with Walter Koenig and had a brief, albeit telling conver-sation that went something like this:

Lt. Kowalski: “Mr. Koenig, Lieutenants

Kowalski and Peterson. We are your es-cort, sir.”

Mr. Koenig (shocked): “Really?” Lt. Kowalski: “Aye, sir. We beamed

down from the Stormbringer.” Mr. Koenig (sniffing): “Did you beam

down, or did you Jim Beam down.” Lt. Kowalski: “Excuse me, sir?” Mr. Koenig (smugly): “Just a little hu-

mor.” Lt. Kowalski: “We at the Starfleet Secu-

rity Service have no sense of humor that we are aware of, sir.”

Mr. Koenig (resigned): “Indeed.” Lt. Kowalski: “This way, please.”

Meeting Existing Friends and Making New Friends…

I didn’t want to say “Old Friends” because well, some are younger than we are J. We did meet new members KROTHOS and PUNISHER for the first time

Con 2006 (Continued from page 16) and we were able to spend some time with them despite their working as con staff and being very busy during the weekend. We also met up with members from the USS Pioneer (amazing that we had to travel all the way to Utah to have fun with them – as busy as we all have been lately). We saw Rex Rouviere from I-SCI-FI.com and I was able to happily talk with Admiral Dennis Hollin-ger of the 7th Fleet for awhile. We celebrated the newly commissioned USS URSA MAJOR, hung out with the members of the USS Ticonderoga, USS Kelly, USS Re-tributor, The Utah Browncoats and we even had a chance to chat with members of the 501st Alpine Garri-son. Wow… what a lineup of diverse fandom! The Day After…

We went out to the after con dinner at a place called (amusingly enough) “Chuck-O-Rama” and contrary to the name, no one barfed. It was a great buffet with just about everything you could ask for (unless it was ice cream – that machine was broken) and we ate and cir-culated and said our good-byes before departing back for Colorado. In the Future…

We had such a great time and we can’t wait for the opportunity to repay our Utah friends for their hospitality when they come to Denver. Until then, the Stormbringer will be hosting more events such as the MONDO Storm-bringer 8th Annual Halloween Anniversary Party (complete with our very own Haunted Battlestar) in con-junction with House Vampyr on October 28th at MileHi Con in Denver. Email [email protected] for more details and to RSVP.

Until then… Good Hunting.

reason. As a student of the Federation’s glory days, he wants to have the Enterprise reclaim her legacy. Al-though they are not ready to share artwork, Rossi says the ship will be very different than familiar saucer/hull/nacelle designs while still being recognizable as a ‘Star Trek’ ship. Her crew will be a collection of humans and aliens including a chief engineer named ‘Mr. Zero’ who wears an environmental suit to survive. Life on the ship will mirror that of the Federation itself. "The Captain is more forward thinking and wants to go out and do some exploring but half the crew will be against that and want to just protect the border," says Rossi. Leading the ’stay the course’ faction will be Chase’s first officer, Com-mander Barric Holden who wants a command of his own and be a bit resentful of the his new captain. Rounding out the ‘big 3′ will be Lt. Kaylen Donal, a tough-as-nails

security chief whose team of red shirts are all linked with Borg technology implants called ‘Biomechanical Utility Grafts or ‘BUGs’. The Zero Room team want to see this security squad kick some butt and not just be cannon fodder. Rossi draws the distinction with previous security personnel "they aren’t the hapless pajama wearing guys who get vaporized every time…these are going to be very thoughtful clever bad-ass soldiers." A new look and a look back

When choosing a style for their new animated series, Zero Room chose a 2D style that was both modern and yet nostalgic. The designs are influenced by the work of Darwyn Cooke who made the recent retro-cool New Frontier comic series. "Although the show is set in the future the designs are founded in TOS, it is a throwback that is also looking forward," explains Rossi. From the designs of the uniforms to the phasers there is certainly an Original Series feel to the work, possibly harkening back to their original idea to set the series in the TOS period. Jeff Parker, an accomplished comic book artist currently working on Marvel’s on X-Men, has done most of the character design work. In addition to Jeff there are some others artists who have done work on the project and Zero Room are looking to expand the team as well.

Trek Series (Continued from page 26) [If you are a 2D artist interested in getting involved, Zero Room do take submissions. Inquiries can be sent to [email protected]] So what is next?

One thing that should be made clear is that it is en-tirely unclear if, when or how this animated series will be seen. If the project gets the go ahead it will most likely be seen on StarTrek.com, however the show would be made in a way so it can be also shown on broadcast TV as well as DVD. This is somewhat similar to the Star Wars: Clone Wars animated series which was shown on Star-Wars.com as well as the Cartoon Network and then put out on DVD. One of the big hurdles seems to be the con-voluted nature of the Trek license sharing deal between the former Viacom partners CBS and Paramount. Appar-ently when your name is not J.J. Abrams it is a bit difficult to work a new Trek project through the system. Currently the project is in a holding pattern and may remain so until the release of Star Trek XI in 2008. If CBS and Para-mount want Star Trek to compete with other franchises like Star Wars, Superman, and Batman, then it makes sense for it to have an animated component.

Only time will tell if this project will see the light of day or end up like ‘Star Trek Phase II’ and other ‘Treks that could have been’. It is certain that this different take on the Trek universe will spark debate, but the people be-hind it are to be credited for attempting a daring take on the venerable franchise. The project does have the sup-port of one of Star Trek’s most respected designers (and Trek’s semi-official historian) Mike Okuda (although he works with Rossi on Trek Remastered, Okuda is not inov-led with the new animated project). Okuda tells Trek-Movie.com "the concept offers fresh, exciting characters and stories, and the visuals promise to be cool…I hope it happens."

anyway is headed towards a more visceral experience, a sort of a more action-oriented RPG mechanic, and there’s plenty of examples of that out there. We’re also heading in a simi-lar direction. When you’re on the ground, you’ll be likely engaging more than one enemy at once, and dealing with enemies maybe more quickly than in traditional MMORPGsb . In space, it will go a little bit more slowly; of course you’re dealing with large capital ships, they move more slowly, they take a lot more damage, and they deal a lot more damage. So while the two experiences are similar in mechanics between space and ground in a lot of ways, we’re differentiating them by this exact point that you’re talking about, working with the pacing of each.

DM: One thing about Star Trek, while we’re talking about com-bat here, the show was often about finding other ways around combat situations, finding peaceful solutions. Are you building those kinds of things into the game?

DS: We’ve talked a lot about those things, I can’t say that we’ve actually put them in yet. We have a lot of good ideas in that department, and I think that’s one of the things that will make MMOs in general better, and it’s one of the things that Star Trek really demands us to figure out, is how we can make missions more than ‘Go out and find 10 Romulan

STOGalaxy (Continued from page 27)

scalps and return them for this reward’. We need to do bet-ter than that, and we have a lot of good ideas; a lot of it is just good writing and good context, and setting up good scenarios, but we also do have some feature ideas in mind to allow players to succeed in other ways than just blowing someone away.

DM: Speaking of the setting, that of Star Trek, your game is set just beyond the end of the last series, is it not?

DS: Yea it is, it’s 20…20-25 years past the last movie, which was Nemesis.

DM: OK, so, how much freedom were you given from your license source to innovate, change things artistically and thematically, throughout the game?

DS: We’ve been given total freedom, and one of the reasons we picked that timeframe is that no one had done anything in that range, at least not with respect to the movies or the tele-vision shows, so it gave us a lot of license to create our own world. And, beyond that, the way we think of this is that we are adapting Star Trek to the MMO genre, or another way to look at it is, we think of it in terms of creating a whole new series. So, we’re creating a whole new visual look – it’s a

(Continued on page 34)

Page 34: Subspace Communicator (Volume 18, Issue 1)

Subspace Communicator Stardate 10701-02 Page 34

much more exciting look for Star Trek than I think anyone’s seen before. And I think when people approach it, they’re going to realize that this isn’t just a retread of what’s been done before, that this is a whole new world and something to go out and explore and feel like people are participating in Star Trek for the first time again. So we’re really excited about that, and CBS, our license holder, has been totally supportive. They are also looking, you know, to take Star Trek in new directions, and they’ve been really pleased with some of the ideas we’ve been coming up with.

DM: There’s been rumors floating around of a new movie or show in the Star Trek universe. Do you know anything about it, and are you worried that it might cramp your free-dom?

DS: [Laughter] Yea, I think there was a bit of concern about that initially. I’ve done a lot of movie games myself, and I know how difficult it can be to try to build a game at the same time as a movie is in production. But, to be honest, we know about as much as you do and everybody else out there does from reading news on the Internet, but sounds like for now anyway it’s planned to be a prequel, so it’ll be way hundreds of years out of our way. So that’s just all good, because that gives us the opportunity to incorporate some of the things – the potential to incorporate things from the movie without having to deal with potentially being in con-flict with the story they’re coming up with.

DM: Where Star Trek, it’s more of a universe than an individual story, but it still has it share of important characters that float around and often bend the rules of timelines.

DS: Mmhmm. DM: Should we anticipate various characters showing up? DS: Yea, I can’t say I’ve actually been in negotiations with any

of the actors yet. But, from everything I hear, they’re great people to work with and really enjoy working on games, and we do have a list of people that we plan to get involved with the game, and make cameo appearances. So, definitely, that’ll happen.

DM: So then, is it reasonable to assume that there’ll be some form of voice-acting in the game?

DS: Oh, sure. [Laughter] Yea, there’ll definitely be voice. I mean, I don’t know how much yet, but I don’t think you could do a Star Trek game without having voice actors – voiceovers in the game.

DM: OK. Well, we talked a bit about the combat in space and on land, but what about other aspects that are popular to MMO players, such as exploration?

DS: Yea, that’s been also a big focus for us in the last couple of months. We – when you look at space, and you just start out with what space is, and it’s really a big empty vacuum, and it’s not very exciting to explore, I think EVE has done cer-tain things to help try and improve that, but we want to take that a lot further. You know, of course in the show, they get to cut when they’re out in the emptiness and blackness of space, they can just cut to when the ship happens to be somewhere exciting, and obviously you can’t do that in an MMO, at least not without breaking up your world severely. So, what we have been working on is coming up with a way to render space that is as – is very exciting, and looks like

STOGalaxy (Continued from page 33) the kind of places that you might imagine and hope are somewhere out there, but in our game they’re everywhere. It makes for a much more enjoyable environment to wander around in and find out what’s around the next planet, and explore and see wondrous things. And so, that’s been a big part of our exploration, there’s a lot of new technology that goes into pulling that effect off, a lot of great art that goes into that as well, so it’s been a constant source of R&D for us.

DM: What about on land? In space, I would assume, everyone’s all together flying around their spaceships, but, on land, are you planning to do little instanced pockets of land for play-ers to do specific missions? Or, will there be rolling hills and large areas to explore?

DS: Uh, I guess I can answer that in a couple ways. One, there will be rolling hills and large areas. I mean, there will be very large areas for players to beam down to and explore, and there’ll be plenty of those. There will also be the tradi-tional little tiny pockets of content that you’ll beam down to; think of it like the typical set on a TV show. So we’ll have a robust mix of both; that – just because we have a small pocket of content doesn’t always mean it’s gonna be instanced, though. I think at some level, when a small beam-down place gets too small you probably do want to make it instanced just so players aren’t bumping into each other, but – we’re trying to keep the balance. We tend to like more public, open-area games, at least in terms of our tastes on the game development team. We like more of an open area game with perhaps a smaller percentage of in-stance areas for those really tight mission areas where you don’t want to run into any other players. But we tend to like the large open areas so that it encourages good social inter-action with MMO players.

DM: In the past when we spoke, you’ve been – you’ve always said that you’re intending, at least, a 50-50 balance between your avatar and in space. Is that still the case?

DS: Yea, it is. We’ll see how that pans out once we get it up and running. It ultimately comes down to what we enjoy playing most. I have a feeling that if we enjoy playing space more it’ll drift more in the direction of space and, obviously vice versa, if we enjoy playing ground more. So – it’s one of the nice things about Star Trek for us, is that we didn’t have to sit down and draw a continent and figure out what’s going to go in every corner of that continent. It’s space, it’s wide open, we can create new content anywhere we want, we can easily drop in content even after launch, and it’s just a mat-ter of dropping a new planet into the world, and then on that planet can be endless amounts of area to explore. We have a very flexible environment, and we plan to take advantage of that to find the best possible mix. But, it’s absolutely true that for right now our plan is 50-50, and I think it’s proba-bly gonna stay pretty close to that.

nal Star Trek, which "has generated 21.3 million lines of chat and 5 million transactions in the virtual stock ex-change known as the Spock Market since its premiere in April 2006." Star Trek 2.0 is the network's highest-rated show among young male viewers, who are the network's core audience.

"The young male demo is driving today's media revo-lution," said G4 president Neal Tiles. "Our goal is to offer them TV that guys can get their hands on - literally."

Because of the success of the original series in this format, G4 plans a similar relaunch of The Next Genera-tion, in which the original seven seasons' worth of epi-sodes will be broadcast with streaming trivia, behind-the-scenes data and interactive features such as live chat and the virtual stock market. Star Trek: The Next Generation 2.0 will make its first appearance on Monday, January 15th at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time and will continue to air on weeknights in that time slot.

Among the statistics that will be calculated for the se-ries are the "Picard Maneuver" -- in which crewmembers tug their uniforms to straighten them -- and "Data Saves the Day." A few original series stocks will carry over to The Next Generation's Spock Market, including communicators and transporters, but many new ones will be introduced, including most of the major characters and the Borg Col-lective.

Fan Films Featuring Familiar Faces

Two of the big fan film projects have new releases out, both featuring original series talent. Star Trek New Voy-ages has the full episode of ‘To Serve All My Days’ featur-ing Walter Koenig in an episode written by Trek vet DC Fontana. And the web miniseries project ‘Of Gods And Men’ has an extended 5 minute trailer now available. OGaM features Koenig along with Nichelle Nichols and a myriad of other Trek luminaries behind and in front of the camera. Both STNV and OGaM aspire to become offi-cially sanctioned Trek projects, but for now remain ‘fan films’. Although both still fall short of TV budget produc-tion values, they both are raising the bar for ‘independent’ Trek films.

http://www.startreknewvoyages.com Takei Has 'World Enough and Time' For Fan Films

George Takei called web-based series like Star Trek: New Voyages, in which he reprises his role as Sulu, "the future" of the original series and said, "Making these new

HMS (Continued from page 28) shows is a pure hobby, a work of sacrifice for everybody." In a new article in L.A.'s Daily News, Takei and ex-

ecutive producer James Cawley discussed "World Enough and Time", the Sulu episode scheduled to debut on the internet in March. In that installment, Sulu find himself stranded on an alien world, where he ages and fathers a daughter.

Cawley, who plays Captain Kirk in New Voyages, called the series "a dream come true", saying, "I discov-ered the show as a kid, and it stayed with me all these years. I wanted to be part of 'Star Trek' my whole life."

It costs about $70,000 to produce each episode, which can be downloaded for free at the New Voyages web site. The series takes place in the fourth year of the Enterprise's original five-year mission. Walter Koenig (Chekov) and Grace Lee Whitney (Rand) have also taken part in the fan-produced series.

"There's this misconception that 'Star Trek' fans are green-bodied creatures with antennae coming out of their heads. No!" insisted Takei. "They are people like [Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist] Paul Allen and Sen. Patrick Leahy, whose passion is 'Star Trek' and their dream is to be Captain Kirk on the bridge of the Starship Enterprise."

CBS, which currently owns the rights to the franchise that premiered on NBC in the 1960s, has said that the fan productions may continue so long as the episodes are not sold for profit. A producer at Gigapix Studios, where the episodes film, worked without pay for nearly two months on the upcoming episode. "The script is so good...Sulu used to be a bit player in the original series, but here he has the lead," said Don Baldaramos. "We get to see his character and personality, plus he shows a paternal side."

Marc Zicree, who co-wrote and is directing "World Enough and Time", said that the secret to Star Trek's on-going success is its optimism. "It reassures us that al-Qaida isn't going to kill us, that we're going to get beyond this. Plus, there are so many parallels to what's happen-ing today that even the earliest episodes are still relevant. People want to know there's going to be a better tomor-row."

STAR TREK COMICS SOAR AGAIN

CBS Consumer Products Celebrates Star Trek’s 40th Year By Naming IDW As New Comics Partner

San Diego, CA (November 9, 2006)—It’s not a rift in the space/time continuum—IDW Publishing is pleased to announce the return of Star Trek to the realm of comic books. The legendary science fiction franchise that’s spanned six television series, ten motion pictures, and hundreds of novels, celebrates its 40th anniversary by

(Continued on page 36)

Page 36: Subspace Communicator (Volume 18, Issue 1)

naming IDW Publishing as the source for all-new Star Trek comic book voyages.

IDW’s plans for the Star Trek franchise in comics are far-reaching, and will unfold over the next few months. The first Star Trek miniseries will debut in January 2007, in conjunction with the 20th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation®. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D return with an all-new adventure that will span The Next Generation timeline. The six-issue miniseries, Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Space Between, begins by setting the scene during the first year of the Enterprise-D’s man-dated mission to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, boldly going “where no one has gone before.”

At the helm of this first venture is writer David Tisch-man (Bite Club), who is joined by artist Casey Maloney (Children of the Grave). Artists Dennis Calero (X-Factor) and Zach Howard (Shaun of the Dead) will provide 50/50 covers for the first issue, with covers from Spectrum Award-winning artist Jeremy Geddes (Doomed) and vet-eran painter Ken Kelly (KISS’s Destroyer album art) also on the way.

But that’s just the beginning. IDW Publishing will be producing additional Star Trek titles with a new line of comic book projects in the rich tradition of 40 years of science fiction excellence.

“I couldn’t be happier to be shepherding Star Trek comics in the 21st century,” said IDW’s Publisher/Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall. “Not only is this one of the most sto-ried franchises in all of entertainment, but its history in comics is a long one, too. And yet, despite the abun-dance of different Star Trek comics that have come along in the past, we’ve hit on some unique ways to bring new vibrancy and creativity to the line. I look forward to build-ing on the legacy that stretches back to the Gold Key comics I read as a kid and moving the franchise forward into the future. Well, further into the future, that is. Can’t wait to let the fans know more of what we have in mind.”

Shatner Reflects on Jewish Youth, Hope for Peace in Israel

"I'm not a mechanic, much less a real space captain," William Shatner joked at a Jewish book fair where he spoke about his roles in entertainment and charity, saying that he takes real pleasure from writing about Captain Kirk's adventures.

"More and more I am finding that when I write about Captain Kirk, I am writing about me," Shatner told an au-dience at the Jewish Book Festival in St. Louis, according to the St. Louis Jewish Light. "Of course I know that An-thony Hopkins is not a cannibalistic serial killer in real life, but a real portrait of Captain Kirk has emerged over the

HMS (Continued from page 35) past 40 years...like me, he has lost friends, loved ones. He has come to appreciate the complexities of life as much as I have. We are both not as young and as brash, but we are both still handsome."

Shatner mixed wit with seriousness during his talk, in which he admitted, "I have also not saved the universe like Captain Kirk, nor have I fought crime like attorney Denny Crane from The Practice and Boston Legal. I am certainly not a prominent attorney with mad cow dis-ease." He joked that being at the book fair reminded him of his Bar Mitzvah, though he noted that that was not in a gymnasium. "This is your 28th annual Jewish Book Festi-val, a long time, but not in my lifetime," the 75-year-old actor observed.

Though he spoke little about his own Jewish upbring-ing in Montreal, Shatner did describe the therapeutic rid-ing program he is bringing to Israel with the assistance of the Jewish National Fund. "The idea came to me on a photographic safari we were taking, while driving in the Negev, and we came across a Bedouin Arab boy who beckoned to us. After our terrific Israeli guide, Amir and the boy had a confrontation over the boy's offer to show us his camels for a dollar, it occurred to me that there should be a way to bridge the gap among the different peoples in the Middle East," Shatner said.

He and his wife began a foundation to help Beouin, Palestinian, Jordanian and Israeli children with disabili-ties. "The program brings kids from this war-torn area together to encourage peace through the incredible heal-ing power the energy of the horses provides," Shatner explained. "We hope that this program will serve as a model of how we can come together despite differences for healing and hopefully for peace."

Jeri Ryan to Wed

Voyager star Jeri Ryan is "scoping out" venues in France's Loire's valley for an intimate June 2007 wedding to fiance Christopher Eme. The German-born actress has fallen in love with the French countryside and has set her sights on staging her nuptials there next summer. She tells America's TV Guide magazine, "It (ceremony) isn't as small as I thought it would be. We don't want a big American thing. "We wanted it to be 60 people tops, but it will be smallish at 80 (people). It will be very French... The area is exquisite."

Stewart Set for London Convention in January

Because of his commitments to the Royal Shake-speare Company this past year, Patrick Stewart has been unavailable for convention appearances for awhile, on any continent. But he'll start getting back in the swing of things this January, when he will headline an event for Creation Entertainment in London which will celebrate both the 40th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise and the 20th anniversary of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Creation will hold its London convention January 5-7, 2007, at the Hilton Metropole Hotel. Other special guests

Trek on Exhibit at Moving Image Museum

The Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, New York, has opened an exhibit called "Star Trek: 40 Years of Fandom" which explores the cultural phenomenon of Trek with more than 600 artifacts representing the pleth-ora of licensed merchandise — action figures, trading cards, board games, comic books, etc. — as well as fan-generated magazines and films.

"Examining the fan culture that has developed around Star Trek highlights the increasingly close rela-tionship between the producers of mass entertainment and their audiences," said Rochelle Slovin, museum di-rector. "This exhibition surveys the ways in which Star Trek narratives and their related merchandise have been consumed, and how these artifacts and storylines are appropriated by fans who often create new voyages all their own." Thirty fan-produced films such as "Star Trek: New Voyages" are being shown at an interactive station.

The exhibit will run through April 15, 2007. For more information visit www.MovingImage.us.

QUARK BITES

{ Though it lasted just two and a half seasons, the live-action TV series BEAUTY AND THE BEAST still has a dedicated following of fans all over the world, who attend conventions and endlessly deconstruct the relationship between the two main characters. On Feb. 13, they'll get a chance to fall in love all over again when the first season is released on DVD in honor of the show's 20th anniversary. Linda Hamil-ton stars as district attorney Catherine Chandler, who forms a special bond with a lion-faced man named Vincent, played by Ron Perlman. The DVD will fea-ture all 22 episodes of the show's first season for a retail price of $49.99.

{ Thomas Dekker (NBC's Heroes) is set to play John Connor in Fox's SF drama pilot The Sarah Connor

HMS (Continued from page 36) Chronicles, based on the Terminator film franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Dekker, who plays Claire's friend Zach on Heroes, will join Lena Headey in the title role. Sarah was played by Linda Hamilton in the films; John was played by Edward Furlong in 1991's Terminator 2: Judgment Day and by Nick Stahl in 2003's Terminator 3: Rise of the Ma-chines. The action of The Sarah Connor Chronicles takes place after the events depicted in Terminator 2 and follows Sarah, a modern warrior and loving sin-gle mom to 15-year-old son John. Dekker also had a recurring role on The CW's 7th Heaven. NBC is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

{ Here's a bit from Heath Ledger about his upcoming turn as The Joker in TDK: "[He's a] pure anarchist....I still feel like it's a character I've never done be-fore,and I'm going to be donning a mask. I'm not really thinking about the commercial consequences. Maybe I should be. But at this point, it's just an excit-ing next step."

{ When Lost returns Feb. 7, 2007, it will have a new Wednesday 10 p.m. ET/PT timeslot—out of the line of fire from Fox's megahit American Idol, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Taking Lost's old 9 p.m. timeslot will be two new sitcoms: The Knights of Prosperity at 9, followed by In Case of Emergency at 9:30. The low-rated new SF drama Day Break, meanwhile, which has been subbing in Lost's Wednesday 9 p.m. timeslot, might also migrate to 10 p.m.

{ Terry Rossio, co-writer of the Pirates of the Carib-bean film trilogy, told SCI FI Wire that the upcoming third and final film, Pirates of the Caribbean: At Worlds End, will have a grand finale that sends the franchise off in an epic manner. "The most difficult thing about writing a trilogy is coming up with the cli-mactic ending of the trilogy," Rossio said in an inter-view on Dec. 5 to promote that day's DVD release of the second film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. "So for that third film, you have not only the usual challenges of coming up with an ending, but somehow you have to have the ending of all end-

monic figure—possibly the character known as the Phantom Rider—riding a skeletal horse. Ghost Rider is scheduled for release on Feb. 16, 2007.

{ According to two online sources, Gary Page will have somthing to do with costumes on TDK (The Dark Knight). From SHOW AND STAY: "Gary Page who is currently designing for the new HARRY POTTER film and will soon be working on the next BATMAN." And from THE INDEPENDENT: "As the fabric buyer for the BATMAN sequel, he is busy sourcing stretch fab-rics for the outfit worn by the man in black, played by Christian Bale, buying only the very finest materials in Paris." It looks to me that Mr. Page will be working for costume designer Lindy Hemming, who will return for TDK, I've been told. Thanks to "Bambang" for the links.

{ Could Justin Hartley's smarmy grin be big enough to carry a spinoff? An interview at Media Village won-ders just that. "People are always asking me that," Hartley said, "and my answer is always, 'I'm doing Smallville right now and I can't really focus until I'm done with it.'" But now that Smallville is done it's like, yeah, I guess it's time to start thinking about [a spin-off]. Obviously it's not up to me. If someone calls we'll have to start talking ... The story does lend itself to him coming back. The way it's left, I don't know if he would come back to 'Smallville' or another show. I don't know what's going to happen, but it definitely leaves the door open, which is kind of nice."

{ Dynamite Entertainment announced on Tuesday that the five-issue opening story arc of the ongoing New Battlestar Galactica comic book series will be col-lected in a Hardcover Exclusive Edition. The book is scheduled for an April release. Additional material includes a complete cover gallery, commentary from the creative team, behind-the-scenes material and more.

{ Wizard has the inside word from creator Todd McFarlane about continued efforts to resurrect this film franchise. "['Spawn 2'] will probably be 'R' rated," McFarlane explained. "And here's how the movie's going to work: minus Spawn, everything else is real. Like in the first 'Grudge' film. Minus something creepy going on in that house, everything else was real in that movie. I've always been enamored by the creepy shows where they sort of seem like they could be real except for one element. For me, personally, once you get too much fantasy then I think you lose the element of fear."

{ Ed Neumeier, says Sony are about push the greenlight on his “Starship Troopers 3”. “Looks like - fingers crossed - Sony is moving forward”, Neumeier, who will write & direct the film, tells Moviehole.

ings."

{ USA Today has a first look at the Fantasticar which will appear in the Marvel-minded sequel, along with some insights into the design of the vehicle.

{ Holding out for a hero? Actor Tobey Maguire told Starpulse that he's done donning the spandex. "This might be a good place to stop," Maguire said. "I am not tied contractually to any more 'Spider-Man' mov-ies. I am not completely closed to the idea of another one if it made sense but I would say the odds were in favor of this being the last one."

{ Sony previewed never-before-seen footage from its upcoming comic-book adaptation Ghost Rider, star-ring Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendes, at a special screening in Hollywood, Calif., on Nov. 30. Writer/director Mark Steven Johnson appeared at the event, held at the famous Hollywood Forever Cemetery, to introduce several scenes from the film, including the first time Cage's character, Johnny Blaze, transforms into Ghost Rider, a motorcycle-riding demon with a flaming-skull for a head. Ghost Rider centers on a stunt rider who sells his soul to the devil (played by Peter Fonda) to save his dying father from cancer. During the day, he lives a normal life, but at night, in the presence of evil, he is forced to do the devil's bid-ding as Ghost Rider. The sneak peek from the film also included scenes in which Johnny reveals his secret to his high-school sweetheart (Mendes), evades the police by jumping off of a bridge into a river on his Hell Cycle, fights an elemental demon on a rooftop and meets the Caretaker (Sam Elliot). It concluded with an image of Ghost Rider speeding down a deserted road at night alongside another de-

data. You can get a pretty much complete look at what the robot and car forms are supposed to look like. Meanwhile, Zap2It has an interview with voice actor Peter Cullen about being Optimus Prime, which he based on his older brother Larry. "When he came home, I could see a change. He was quieter and he was a man and a hero to me," said Welker. "I watched him and listened to him. I'd never had an opportunity to do a superhero, and when that came, [that voice] just came right out of me and I sounded like Optimus."

{ Marvel Studios and Universal Pictures announced a June 27, 2008, release date for The Incredible Hulk, sequel to 2003's Hulk. The announcement was made Nov. 6 by Michael Helfant, president and chief operating officer of Marvel Studios, and Kevin Feige, Marvel's president of production. Louis Leterrier (Transporter 2, Unleashed) will direct The Incredible Hulk, which will return to the roots of the long-running comic series. Zak Penn, who previously collaborated with Marvel on X2 and this summer's X-Men: The Last Stand, is writing the script. The project is being produced by Avi Arad, Feige and Gale Anne Hurd and will be executive-produced by Michael Helfant, David Womark and Arad. Marvel Studios is currently casting the project. The Incredible Hulk is being in-dependently produced by Marvel Studios through its $525 million, non-recourse film finance facility and will be distributed domestically and in several interna-tional territories by Universal Pictures.

{ Bryan Singer has signed a deal with Warner Brothers to direct and produce a sequel to Superman Returns, with Legendary Pictures expected to co-finance, Vari-ety reported. The sequel is tentatively intended for release in summer 2009, although the studio stressed that there's not even a script or budget yet. The sequel is apparently at the very beginning of the development process, and, as with any other project, there are any number of factors that must be ad-dressed before it is given a gree light, the trade paper reported. Superman Returns grossed more than $390 million worldwide, though it wasn't the per-former studio had hoped for. In terms of casting, Warners has an option on Superman Returns star Brandon Routh. Michael Dougherty and Dan Harris penned the script for Superman Returns based on a story they created with Singer. It's not clear whether Dougherty and Harris will return for the sequel.

{ An anonymous scooper wrote in with the following: "I

“Plans are afoot to shoot next year. Casper Van Dien will be back as Colonel John Rico. There'll be a new bug or two. Also draft riots. Religion makes a come-back. And the Federation has a new weapon.”

{ Warner Home Video and Warner Brothers Television announced the start of production on Babylon 5: The Lost Tales, a made-for-video movie that will tell two new stories set in the B5 universe. WHV will be the home-entertainment distributor for the made-for-DVD release, which will include two new stories under the collective subtitle "Voices of the Dark" in one film, plus exclusive behind-the-scenes content. The sto-ries will be written and directed by executive pro-ducer and Babylon 5 creator J. Michael Straczynski. Executive producer Doug Netter also returns in that role. Actors from the original series that have signed on to participate in the project include Bruce Boxleit-ner (President John Sheridan), Tracy Scoggins (Capt. Elizabeth Lochley) and Peter Woodward (Galen). The Lost Tales picks up several years after the events of the original Babylon 5 TV series and follows several of its major characters in new adven-tures set against the backdrop of the B5 universe. The movie will be released sometime in 2007.

{ IESB breaks the working title for Bryan Singer's Su-perman Sequel. The working title is Superman:The Man of Steel. Working title meaning that it's just that. A name to refer to during pre-production, so yes, it more than likely will change. I like it just the same. Robert has a nice little article on the title and what we might expect the direction Bryan Singer to take in the sequel. Somehow, I think Robert's educated guesses are right on the money, so set your bookmarks. I don't think this will be the last we hear from IESB in regards to breaking Superman news. According to The Honolulu Advertiser, the sequel to Superman Returns will hit theaters in 2009. Superman Returns producer Chris Lee confirmed it at a University of Hawaii discussion along with Brian Singer and fellow producer Jon Peters. Another interesting note is that Singer has been approached to direct the next X-Men movie. He turned it down, owing to his busy schedule, but I think we all know he wouldn't touch that franchise with a ten-foot pole after Fox killed off some big characters.

He showed me a picture of it, unfin-ished, on his camera phone and told me that after building a bike for a WB executive in California, that they may want to speak to him about building the Sidewinder, or some derivative thereof, for the upcom-ing movie 'The Dark Knight.' The bike looks a lot like something Bats would ride."
