Mighty Lion Welcome week commenced Monday, August 29, 2016 with the Student Organization Fair which provided all Mighty Lions with the opportunity to connect with various CDU clubs and organizations on campus. Many students also learned about the different services provided by the Department of Student Affairs and had the opportunity to meet members of the Student Affairs team.

Discovering CDUNew Student Orientation

Steve O. Michael, PhD.Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost

Charles R. Drew University (CDU) student orientation, better known as Discovering CDU, is an exciting time in the Lion community. This year’s Fall event was held August 9-10, 2016. Discovering CDU is a two day event held a few weeks prior to the start of each term. During this event, students attend sessions on student services, financial aid, library services,

registration & records, blackboard, Title IX harassment training, campus safety, health insurance and student organizations. All sessions are designed to introduce students to academic excellence, vibrant campus life and community involvement that comprise the CDU tradition.

Congratulations to the Department of Student Affairs for launching the Student Affairs Newsletter—one more tool to keep students informed and share information with the community. Our new University Strategic Plan calls for a unified CDU student government and with the establishment of CDUSG—the newly established Student Government organization—we are making significant progress on this initiative. I am sure the Newsletter will be useful and relevant to the work of the CDUSG.

Our goal is to become a more student centered institution even as we expand our academic programming and grow our enrollment. Communication is critical for a student centered institution and I hope students and student affairs staff will use the Newsletter to provide news and feedback to the community.

There has been a consistent answer to

the question of why students choose CDU. I have been told repeatedly that students are attracted to CDU because of the Mission of the University, which is to serve the underserved by reducing health disparities.

Provost Corner

Personally, I look forward to hearing of how CDU is being transformed into a vivacious, exhilarating, intellectually invigorating, mission-focused comprehensive mid-size university of excellence.

Steve
