David Krakauer doesn’t know if there’s a rock and roll heaven.

What the world-class clarinetist and champion of klezmer, the traditional eastern european Jewish music genre, does know, however, is that there’s definitely a klezmer-funk-hip-hop-dance-party here on earth. he knows this for certain because he—along with trombone player Fred Wesley and rapper DJ Socalled—is the rhythmic core of the klezmer-funk outfit known as abraham Inc.

“It’s actually very logical,” says Krakauer, when asked about the seemingly incongruous musi-cal elements of abraham Inc. “I’ve been doing klezmer music since the mid-nineties, and I’ve al-ways incorporated elements of jazz and funk.” It was his way, he says, of creating “a kind of tradi-tional, ancestral klezmer music that lives in the 21st century; that’s not a museum piece.”

So when he met “kindred spirit” Socalled at a hip-hop Seder in 2001, Krakauer decided that he’d take a chance on blending his own brand of tradi-tional Jewish klezmer music with the younger, hip-per Socalled’s brand of rap.

“I didn’t have any idea,” he recalls. “I thought it would be horrible, but it wasn’t—it was so…in-genious! So brilliant, so highly artistic.” What Krakauer soon realized was that “anywhere there’s pop music there’s rap. It’s part of a phenomenon; a trend in world music.”

and it was something he wanted to be part of, too.

he and Socalled, an accordion-wielding “hip-hop renegade and beat architect” from Canada, re-cruited legendary funk trombonist Wesley—who’d performed with the big names from James Brown to Parliament-Funkadelic to the Count Basie orchestra—to create a musical hybrid they could bring around the world.

“right now, it’s one of a kind,” says Wesley. “a wide variety of elements that come together beautifully, held together by our respect for each other’s music.”

Wesley says he didn’t know much about klezmer when he became part of abraham Inc., and he can identify with members of the audience who might not know what to expect. “I know that whatever they do expect,” he laughs, “it’s not what they’re expecting.

“We have Bronx rapper C-rayz Walz, a standard horn section, jazz guitar, bass—a wide variety of elements and they come together beautifully, but it’s something most people have never heard be-fore.” and yet, something most people love.

“It’s not just entertainment,” Krakauer insists. “We play, and at the end of the night every person comes out smiling.”

We have always believed that “If you build it, they will come,” and we know that your support has helped build that dream. every class you take, every ticket you buy, every visit you make to our galleries and Gift Shop supports the arts at Strathmore.

From Broken to Bling a thing of beauty really is a joy forever—that’s the idea behind Jessica Lee Designs available now at the Mansion Shop at Strathmore.

By recycling discarded treasures from the past and transforming them into objets de beauté, Jessica’s become known for one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces that are as contemporary as they are unique. Now she’s working her magic on materials that have a direct link to a beloved Strathmore tradition, creating a gorgeous new line of jewelry made from broken Strathmore tea room china.

“With the use of imagination we can take the discards of the past and give them new life,” says Jessica. “Instead of depleting all of our natural resources we should look for ways to reuse the materials we already have. recycling in all forms, art included, is a way to do just that.”

We appreciate all that you do to support the arts here at Strathmore. Whether you’re a donor, an arts enthusiast, or a consumer of the fine entertainment, educational programs and arts-related items found only at Strathmore, we thank you for your unwavering support and enthusiasm.

he’s opened for Sinatra, channeled Nat King Cole, recorded with James taylor, idolized George Gershwin and richard rodgers, and toured with his dad, the jazz great Bucky Pizzarelli. So it’s no surprise that John Pizzarelli’s goal is to reinvigo-rate the Great american Songbook. and it’s no surprise that he’s succeeded.

“I’m not consciously saying, ‘I’m going to make ev-erybody love this,’” says Pizzarelli, who performs with Kurt elling on May 10 at the Music Center. “I’m not a Pied Piper. I’m rooted in the music, in jazz and pop songs. and I’ve had the opportunity to be onstage with the greats of jazz.”

Growing up in his beloved New Jersey, Pizzarelli was six when his uncle put a tenor banjo in his hands. and while he was happy to play stan-dards like “Yes Sir, that’s My Baby” and “Bye, Bye Blackbird” at family parties, the young crooner dreamed of a career in professional baseball with his cherished Boston red Sox. But the music had other plans.

“I played little talent shows, had my own rock bands, made a little money on a Friday night,” he says. “at 10 or 12 I picked up the guitar, and from when I was 10 until I was 20 I was enrolled in the School of Bucky Pizzarelli.”

It was a thorough education. Between performing in his dad’s trio and playing rock gigs in New York City clubs, Pizzarelli forged a unique musical style, blending jazz standards and modern pop favor-ites. It’s a cool, swingin’ style—and it has become Pizzarelli’s trademark at the height of a 40-album recording career that’s included critically lauded interpretations of Nat King Cole, Duke ellington and other jazz greats.

his retro jazz fantasy? “I always wanted to be in Las Vegas, and the Basie Band is playing at the Sands,” he laughs. “that would be the coolest thing that could ever happen.”

When he performs with Kurt elling, the jazz vo-calist Pizzarelli calls “a singular sensation,” the Strathmore audience will get two sides of a highly polished, jazzy-modern coin.

“as different as we are, we’re kind of similar,” says Pizzarelli. “We’ve been friends for a couple of years now—Kurt’s actually on my ellington record—and he’s just remarkable.” they’ll also get Pizzarelli’s gently joking banter, and his stories of meeting ev-eryone from Fred rogers to Paul McCartney.

“It’s all about timing, and talking with the audi-ence in between—entertaining,” he says. “It isn’t cheapening the music; it’s raising the level of en-tertainment.”

Many a star has graced the Strathmore stage, and many a VIP has sat in its audience. But when Dallas Brass comes to perform here, they’ll make room in the front row and up on stage for a group without whom they say no arts or-ganization can function. a group of students.

“our goal is to bring mu-sic and the arts into every-one’s life,” says Michael Levine, who founded Dallas Brass in 1983. “For us, the love of music start-ed in school band, back in fifth grade. that’s the whole reason we do what we do now: to reach the kids; to inspire them.”

and so, in addition to their family-friendly-favorites program, american Musical Journey, which takes the audience from the time of George Washington to the present day with a full complement of brass and percus-sion, Dallas Brass will partner up with 120 young musicians from Montgomery County wind ensem-bles. that means making scores available to music teachers, rehearsing with high school musicians, and inviting the top students to vacate their front-row seats mid-concert and actually join the band onstage.

“this is the perfect environment to reach that ‘band kid’ who has a foot in the door already, and to bring along the family, too,” says Levine. “It’s a way to build audiences; it brings new people to the hall. But it also gives kids a chance to be turned on by the arts.

“I believe in the arts,” he adds. “It’s changed my life.”

It’s also put him on philosophical footing with Betty Scott, Strathmore’s education program coordinator.

Scott knows and appreciates that there are studies showing a correlation between playing music and excelling in math. But she’s inspired by more than just potential academic success when it comes to incorporating the arts into the lives of young people.

“I think it gives kids another viewpoint on life when they grow up exposed to music, to theater, to the fine arts,” she says. “For a child, arts education speaks to that creativity and imagery that normal academics don’t usually do. It offers more oppor-tunities to think out of the box.”

So Scott and her team work closely with the pro-gramming department at Strathmore, always ready to seize an opportunity to bring professional musicians and students together. and when Dallas Brass takes the stage on Friday, May 18 they’ll give the audience more than just Copland, Gershwin and Sousa.

they’ll have the future on hand, ready to take the Strathmore stage.
