While many bands claim to defy classification into one genre or another, the Punch Brothers actu-ally seem to pull it off. their current tour veers from massive outdoor summer festivals to rock clubs to stately concert halls and reports indicate they’re equally delightful on every stage. on their newly released album Antifogmatic, classic blue-grass instrumentation gives voice to music that “brims with color, wit, flash and tenderness, all conveyed with remarkable musicianship and high spirits” (The Wall Street Journal).

“We all grew up playing the bluegrass that really has become traditional american music,” explains guitarist Chris eldridge, “but we weren’t just listen-ing to Bill monroe. We were listening to debussy; and to radiohead. all those artists inform our mu-sic. We draw on whatever that thing is about any

music that drives you crazy, that hits you so hard. We draw on the things we love.” In a concert that features everything from original acoustic bal-lads to psychedelic indie pop to a Brandenburg Concerto by Bach, the common thread surely is that passion for musical discovery.

Chris eldridge (guitar), Paul Kowert (bass), Noam Pikelny (banjo), Chris thile (mandolin and lead vocals) and Gabe Witcher (fiddle) originally came together around thile’s composition “the Blind Leaving the Blind”—the cornerstone of their cel-ebrated 2008 debut album, Punch. In this second release the band created each piece collabora-tively, yielding an album that is at once a tight ensemble sound and a nuanced conversation of blended experiences and voices.

While each musician is highly acclaimed in his own right, together they are a dynamic band whose sin-gular live performance should not be missed. “I re-member the first time we played together,” shares eldridge, “just looking around and thinking ‘Wow. this is it. I’ve finally found you guys. I’ve been look-ing for you all my life.’” l

Bang on a Can All-Starshailed as “our greatest living composer” (The New York Times), Steve reich is noted for his ground-breaking originality. this all-reich program per-formed by Bang on a Can all-Stars includes the

u.S. premiere of reich’s new piece 2x5, composed for electric guitars, bass, piano and drums. having collaborated closely with reich for over 20 years, 2x5 is the first reich work to be premiered by Bang on a Can. 2x5 innovatively folds ultra-sophisticated musicianship into a rock quintet format. the pro-gram also includes Music for Pieces of Wood, Piano

Phase/Video Phase, Electric Counterpoint and Double Sextet (awarded the 2009 Pulitzer Prize).

the Bang on a Can all-Stars are perfectly suited to perform reich’s repertoire. Called “one of the most visceral performing groups around” by the London Independent, the Bang on a Can all-Stars are a contemporary music powerhouse. having formed on-going collaborative relationships with today’s most important and emerging composers, the Bang on a Can all-Stars offer a genre-defying blend of rock sensibilities and technically flawless chamber musicianship.

a free post-concert discussion with the Bang on a Can all-Stars follows the performance.

The Seasons Projectamerican composer Philip Glass has shaped and reshaped the musical landscape over the decades. a tour de force violin performance by soloist robert mcduffie, for whom The American Four Seasons was composed, makes this d.C. premiere perfor-mance a singular event. The Toronto Star proclaimed of the world premiere “the first performance of the work—violin Concerto No. 2, The American Four Seasons was so spectacularly played by the new piece’s muse, american violinist robert mcduffie… that the event turned into one of the most exciting musical evenings of the year.”

Strathmore Introduces New Class of artists in residence

Strathmore continues to develop gifted emerging artists through the artist in residence (aIr) pro-gram. only in its sixth year, the artist in residence program has already produced a Grammy nomi-nee, a musician who has toured with Stevie Wonder, and numerous musicians who are work-ing as full-time professional performers and edu-cators, releasing new albums and touring nation-ally and internationally.

We are pleased to announce a new class of talent-ed and promising performers who will refine their work under the mentorship of seasoned profession-als Jon Carroll, veteran writer/performer, producer/arranger, educator and Grammy-winning recording artist; daryl davis, keyboardist, bandleader, vocal-ist, guitarist and lecturer, and Jamie Broumas, jazz vocalist and arts management professional.
